8 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Millenium Bridge Pauls Walk 1 EC4V London This is the first pedestrian rivercrossing in central London for more than a century A shallow suspension links Bankside with the City This winning entry of a competition organized in 1996 was an innovative "blade of light" from Arup, Foster & Partners and Sir Anthony Caro Unexpected lateral vibration (resonant structural response) caused the bridge to be closed for modifications The movements were produced by the sheer numbers of pedestrians (90,000 in the first day, with up to 2,000 on the bridge at any one time) Attempts were made to limit the people crossing the bridge: this led to long queues, but dampened neither public enthusiasm, nor the vibrations themselves The closure only 3 days after opening attracted public criticism Solved by installing dampers under and between the deck and the river piers; excellent, as it does not impact the aesthetics Linking the 2 major tourist attractions of St Paul's Cathedral and the fabulous Tate Modern, the bridge is well worth a visit photo: Ruth L Structural engineer Foster & Partners ARUP City of London boeboe 24/7 The Millennium Bridge connects two landmarks in London - St Paul's Cathedral (next to St Paul's London Underground station) designed by Sir Christopher Wren in the 17th century, and Herzog & de Meuron's Tate Modern gallery The nearest underground stations are Blackfriars or Mansion House, both on the Circle line and District line The nearest mainline station is Blackfriars This is one of those cliché-projects: 'you can't miss it' 8

11 photo: Nick Guttridge photo: Nick Guttridge Southcombe Offices Vernon Street 31 W14 London Terry Pawson has wasted not a single square millimetre of ground and has built a stunning new office building which is tightly embraced by a lovingly restored courthouse-turned-office The court building, with its cellular plan, was easily converted offices remained offices and the large courtroom will make a good meeting room, top lit by a roof lantern The new building next door does not make any obvious stylistic reference to its older neighbour The concrete frame is clad in a very light-coloured reconstituted stone which is cut in long, thin slabs that span the long distance across the main entrance The rear façades are fully glazed and look out onto an internal courtyard, complete with olive tree and lush planting There are two main office floors and a small rooftop cube housing another two meeting rooms Because all electrics and heating were banished under the floor, together with the project's relatively small scale, these offices feel very homely Project is not public! 2006 Terry Pawson s Vernon Street Property Cordula_Zeidler photo: Nick Guttridge 11

14 photo: Marcel Wanders Studio photo: Marcel Wanders Studio Wanderduck Conduit Street 16 W1R 9TD London The mannequins are developed as a part of the Wanderduck (Mandarina Duck, London) WanderDuck is the house of the traveller, the house of Gulliver and probably the most legendary British traveller Gulliver with his fully bright yellow posture stands tall (7 meters) in the store and connects with his presence (and a build-in audio system) the two floors of the building Around him clothing and bags are presented on glass tables and shelves and on 40 subtle breathing mannequins, who present the MD clothing and bags in a lively beautiful way Like the whole store they communicate that the building is alive A large chromed two floor high wall is also breathing and changing its surface from convex to concave in a constant fluid rhythm The store s front window will present the Wanders one word-weekly-magazine Outside there is a constant stream of air-bubbles floating around the building and small foam heap visualising the living identity of the whole building photo: Marcel Wanders Studio Interior architect Marcel Wanders Mandarina Duck UK Marcel_Wanders_Studio T

15 photo: Ana Kostic photo: Ana Kostic THE TUBE Simina Belgrade Serbia This club is situated in the basement of a postwar building in the city centre of Belgrade On 350 square metres the architects have created areas which interconnect with one another in a fluid sequence Instead of room-high walls they have used visual and spatial connections, like the installation designed by Mirjana Rankovic,'Time Beyond Time' Time seems to be an unknown dimension here There is no relation to the outside world: the club is located in a former nuclear fallout shelter! The 20-metre-long podium emphasises the proportions of the space and can be used as a catwalk, rostrum or grandstand Although massive, several tonnes in weight, the element seems to float above the floor thanks to the illuminated shadow gap The sensual interaction between the architecture and the visitor is also continued in the way the various materials are used, alternating between concrete and velvet, hard and soft, tangible and perceptible photo: Ana Kostic Floor area/size m² FLUID:ARCHITECTURE Quest doo Vesna_Vucinic 15

16 photo: Nebojsa Babic photo: Nebojsa Babic Majik Café Dzordza Vasingtona 38a Belgrade Serbia The design for the Majik Café stems from Karim s philosophy of creating an inspiring and seamless world that excites all the senses by fusing the physical and the virtual As always, his design is flashy, soft and refreshing Karim's love of sensuous lines and brilliant hues comes through in the dynamic space of Majik and is visible in the walls covered in huge digital prints, the gold vinyl ceiling, the patterned floor finished in engineered stone and the glass bar that changes in colour and mood throughout the customer's stay Rounded forms and curves shape the windows and the bar, as well as decorating the walls The façade is finished in polished, stainless steel tiles As Karim says, "Spaces should give us an emotional lift, be it fulgent, fervid, or peaceful", a credo that makes his design fit brilliantly into a city like Belgrade, which is rich in contrast and contradictions photo: Nebojsa Babic 2008 Veselin Jevrosimovic Vesna_Vucinic 16

20 photo: Damir Fabijanic photo: Damir Fabijanic Vila Vesna Lopud island Dubrovnik Croatia In the work of the Belgrade's architect and professor Nikola Dobrovic, Dubrovnik opus stands out due to its specific quality Respect for local cultures and resources, as well as identification with the Mediterranean way of life also determine his two projects on the Elaphite Island of Lopud: Grand Hotel and Villa Vesna The villa, intended for residence throughout a year, is situated on the northern slope where remains of former dwellings were found These remains were used for construction of the villa's terraced garden supporting walls, and the garden includes an old olive-grove The first two floors are partly buried into the hillside, the above-ground floor creates an exterior space with shadows for daily usage with its console protrusions, and the roof terrace provides a place to stay after the sunset An excellent idea by the architect of natural air conditioning is related to the roof terrace Project is not public! 1939 Nikola Dobrovic tamarazamelli photo: Damir Fabijanic 20

21 photo: Carlos Dias photo: Carlos Dias Bridge of Aspiration Floral Street WC2E London Twisting high above Floral Street in Covent Garden, the 'Bridge of Aspiration', provides the dancers of the Royal Ballet School with a direct link to the Grade 1 listed Royal Opera House The award-winning design addresses a series of complex contextual issues, and is legible both as a fully integrated component of the buildings it links, and as an independent architectural element The skewed alignment and different levels of the landing point dictate the form of the crossing, which is geometrically and structurally simple A concertina of 23 square portals with glazed intervals are supported from an aluminium spine beam These rotate in sequence for the skew in alignment, performing a quarter-turn overall along the length of the bridge The result is an elegant intervention high above the street, which evokes the fluidity and grace of dance (text from website architect) photo: Carlos Dias Project is not public! 2003 Wilkinson Eyre s MI_MOA metro Piccadilly - Covent Garden 21
