3 photo: Colin Guthrie photo: Colin Guthrie Seattle City Hall 4th Ave 600 Seattle Washington tm Seattle City Hall houses the offices of the Mayor and the City Council It was designed in a joint venture between 2 Seattle based firms and in close cooperation with a landscape The sloping site integrates a running water element that cuts through the project and into the plaza on the west side The building features a green roof and is intended to reflect the "Seattle lifestyle" which is focused on love and stewardship of the environment It was awarded a LEED Gold stamp for it's utilization of sustainable building practices The Plaza in front of the building by Landscape s Gustafson Guthrie Nichol Ltd integrates the procession of water through the building into the plaza through several controlled features The "Scrim Pool" in the main plaza shoots jets of water into the air and provides a festive environment photo: Colin Guthrie m² Main designer, Landscape designer Bassetti s Bohlin Cywinski Jackson Gustafson Guthrie Nichol Arkitekt 3

4 Ballard Library 22nd Ave NW 5614 Seattle Washington ranchid=3 The most dominant feature of the Ballard branch of the Seattle Public Library system is a large swooping wooden roof that multitasks like no other Composed of 13 species of grass, the sod roof is punctuated by skylights and solar panels Anemometers gather wind data, and are used in an abstract display in the entry foyer A periscope and observation deck invite visitors to engage in the green roof's ecology above the street The furniture is also of interest Designed by BCJ as well, the modules are made of 4x8 sheets of maple plywood and assembled without fasteners m² Bohlin Cywinski Jackson Monday: / Tuesday: / Wednesday: / Thursday: / Friday: / Saturday: / Sunday: # Take I-5 exit 169 and follow the N 45th St ramp # Turn left on 45th St and stay with the arterial for 3½ miles to 22nd Ave NW (Note: the arterial will become N 46th St and Market St before reaching 22nd Ave NW) # Turn right on 22nd Ave NW and go north 1 block to NW 56th St # The library is located on the right 4

5 UW Medicine Research Complex Mercer Street 815 Seattle Washington Located near the south shore of Lake Union, the University of Washington Medicine Research Complex brings together nearly 950 scientists into a collaborative research environment The buildings are designed to earn the equivalent of LEED certification due to its many sustainable, high-performance features These include the use of 'chilled beams' as a highly efficient radiant cooling system that reduces energy costs, as well as lighting control systems Significant natural day-lighting in laboratory areas is guaranteed, exterior sun shades limit solar gain and reduce energy use There are commuter showers and bike storage lockers, and low VOC materials to optimize indoor air quality as well Structural engineer Client Perkins and Will Magnusson Klemencic Associates UW Medicine From I-5, exit at Mercer street and head west Turn left onto 9th street and you will be along side it From Highway 99, also exit at Mercer street, and merge onto 9th street 5

6 Olympic Sculpture Park Western Avenue 2901 Seattle Washington Occupying a nine-acre site that straddles a major thoroughfare and rail lines, the Olympic Sculpture Park combines a museum, sculptures, landscaping and a beach onto a site of a former brownfield It is operated by the Seattle Art Museum, which is located a few blocks south in the city The park is free to the public and includes works by some of the most famous sculptors in the world, such as Alexander Calder and Richard Serra , Landscape architect Landscape designer Weiss Manfredi Client Charles Anderson Landscape ure Seattle Art Museum Opens 30 minutes prior to sunrise, closes 30 minutes after sunset From I-5 heading North: take the Seneca Street exit Turn slightly left onto Seneca Street Turn right onto 1st Avenue Turn left onto Broad Street The Olympic Sculpture Park will be on your right on Broad Street between Western Avenue and Alaskan Way From I-5 heading South: Take the Union Street exit Stay straight onto Union Street Turn right onto 1st Avenue Turn left onto Broad Street The Olympic Sculpture Park will be on your right on Broad Street between Western Ave and Alaskan Way 6

8 photo: Andrew Larsen photo: Andrew Pisarek Experience Music Project 5th Avenue North 325 Seattle Washington The Experience Music Project in Seattle is a museum dedicated to the exploration of creativity and innovation in popular music The museum contains mostly rock memorabilia and technology-intensive multimedia displays, but is not limited to that It was founded by Paul Allen of Microsoft fame, and it is located in the Seattle city centre, near the Space Needle The building was designed by Frank Gehry, bearing a lot of similarities to his other works Its sheet metal construction resembles Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles Much of the building material is exposed in the building's interior Reminding many of a smashed guitar, Gehry himself stated: "We started collecting pictures of Stratocasters, bringing in guitar bodies, drawing on those shapes in developing our ideas" The architecture was greeted by Seattle residents with a mixture of acclaim for Gehry and derision for this particular edifice, some calling it a 'blob' and others 'the hemmorhoids' m² Structural engineer Client Gehry Partners Hoffman Construction Company Paul Allen Robin 10:00-17:00 daily The building is served by the Seattle Monorail, which connects it to Westlake center The monorail runs through the building There are also many bus lines going to the Seattle Center If you are going by car, you will find many lots and ample street parking surrounding EMP and the Seattle Center campus The largest lot in close proximity to EMP is located at 5th Avenue North and Harrison Street 8
