7 WHY AN ARCHITECTURE WEEK? Welcome to the third American Institute of Architects, Central Valley Chapter (AIACV) Architecture Festival, now known as AIACV Experience Architecture Week. The goal of the event remains the same with the name changing only to more adequately express the importance of recognizing that our lives are often shaped by the way we experience the built environment. The Central Valley has a unique fingerprint of history, climate, culture and place that is embodied in our architecture. That s definitely worth celebrating! We will continue to explore and discuss our regionalism along with broader topics, such as design thinking the process of developing design ideas and concepts. 7 This guide serves as a road map to discover different ways of seeing and experiencing buildings and spaces. Each event, exhibit and gathering is outlined along with a calendar to keep everything in order. 13 THE KICK-OFF Experience Architecture Week Launch Event featuring CANSTRUCTION Fri, Oct 10, 5 9 pm, FREE SMUD Customer Service Center, 6301 S St., Sacramento Experience Architecture Week kicks off with a reveal and awards presentation of our region s first CANSTRUCTION build. This international charity competition brings architects, engineers, contractors and students together to design and build structures made entirely from full cans of food. At the close of the competition, all of the food will be donated to Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services. Exhibits remain up through October 17th and may be viewed weekdays 8 am - 6 pm. 13 The launch event will also feature the Architectura Obscura photography exhibit and presentation, refreshments and music. 17 TOURS Top of the City & Beyond Tour Fri, Oct 17, 12 3 pm, $10 Multiple locations. Full information and map provided to registered attendees. Take a long lunch break and see the city of Sacramento from above and beyond. This tour will give participants exclusive access to amazing views of the city from some of its tallest buildings and an exclusive opportunity to see California s rebuilt Central Plant. AIA architects will be on hand with information at each location. Tour is self-paced. See all the views, a couple or just one you decide. Pre-registered attendees may check in at any location, sign a release and receive a wristband to visit other locations. Locations include: Robert T. Matsui Federal Courthouse Completed in 1999, this 16-story building houses 19 court rooms and provides space for the U.S. district, magistrate and bankruptcy courts, their support offices, court-related agencies and tenant agencies. The public gallery in front of the courtrooms faces south, affording a view of Sacramento, the river and the Central Valley to the south. The tour destination is the top floor, which has a 3-sided, glass enclosed viewing platform adjacent to the elevator lobby. California Fruit Building The California Fruit Building was built in an age of soaring ambition and expansion, of Frank Lloyd Wright, Matisse, Mahler and Madame Curie. It was built and occupied by the most powerful agricultural interests of the day. Opening in 1914, it was the tallest structure in Sacramento, earning the moniker, Sentinel of J Street. Currently under renovation, The Fruit is once again poised at the center of downtown s urban revival. Kado Architecture and completed in Central Plant Welcome inside this 78,000-square-foot facility the largest of its kind on the West Coast. Designed by AIA firm Nacht & Lewis Architects, Sacramento s Central Plant provides chilled water for cooling and steam for heating, which is piped underground to 5.5 million square feet of state office space in 23 buildings throughout the city. Designed by Maria Ogrydziak, AIA, this interconnected complex of one-story buildings weaves between indoor and outdoor spaces, inhabiting a 4.5-acre site surrounded by fields, a private meadow and micro-farm. Designed for a young family to work, live and host guests, the project features innovative TriDi construction, walls of glass that open to the outside, a roof deck with panoramic views and embedded steel details in the walls.
