photo: Hannes Henz photo: Hannes Henz Extension of Kino Xenix Kanzleistrasse Zurich In 1904, several temporary wooden pavilions were erected in Zurich in order to respond to the rising demand for classrooms In 1984, one of these 'temporary' structures was conquered by a group of young film enthusiasts who wanted to set-up an alternative cinema The schoolrooms became the auditorium and the corridor served as a bar In order to achieve a more efficient, more flexible, and more user-friendly building, we were asked to redesign every single corner inside the existing structure and to project an extension The result is a seamless new whole of old and newthe bar, for example, is one continuous space consisting of two halves from 1904 and 2007 This effect is achieved by a continuation of the existing ceiling, including replicas of the old beams, as well as the mimetic materialization of the extension The strategy of unification is used on the exterior as well: The roof of the extension is stretched over parts of the existing building in order to fuse old and new photo: Hannes Henz Floor area/size m² Frei + Saarinen Architekten City of Zuerich MS Daily open except 31Dec Mon-Thu , Fri , Sat , Sun Zurich "Langstasse"-District, Tram Nr 8, Bus Nr 32, Helvetiaplatz 8

photo: Evan Chakroff photo: Evan Chakroff St Antonius Church Kannenfeldstrasse Basel Karl Moser envisioned a structure that stood flush with the street's building line, with unpainted walls and large stained-glass windows that would fill the interior with light transformed into a maze of colour The church is built entirely of in-situ reinforced concrete and its plan is a simple rectangle of remarkable size: 60 metres by 22 metres; the height also being 22 metres The dimly lit, tunnel-like entrance area is a cleverly staged introit to the church's long, bright interior Eight remarkably slim concrete columns carry a barrel-vault over the nave and a flat roof over the aisles, both of them coffered on structural and acoustic grounds The choir is flat, closed off, and over-furnished; the mosaic cross put up later by Hans Stocker also seems out of scale The opposite side, with the soloists podium and mighty organ, has a grid of fine concrete ribs Floor area/size m² Karl Moser evanc photo: Evan Chakroff Services take place saturdays at 1730 and sundays at 715 and 1000 You can take tram #3 to Burgfelderplatz or #1 and #3 to Kannenfeldplatz 9

photo: afgh Pavilion Seefeldquai Zurich This take on the classic glass pavilion is no demonstration model for a transparent utopia, nor is it an attempt to 'frame' the natural surroundings It is a less formal design for a kiosk in the park beside Riesbach Harbour in Zürich The take-away restaurant, with seating for 35, is contained within a glass object that is in keeping with a series of sculptures in the park The polygonal shape, the transparency and lightness of the material, and the various tints of the colored films on the glass, ensure that, depending on the time of day, this object stands out from or merges with its surroundings On a less prosaic note, another reason for choosing glass was the fact that graffiti and dirt can be easily removed photo: afgh Floor area/size m² Supplier Supplier Andreas Fuhrimann Gabrielle Hächler Architekten Glas Trösch AG MTV Villmergen City of Zürich Kirsten_Hannema 10

photo: Nazar Leskiw photo: Nazar Leskiw The Picassohaus Brunngässlein Basel The building site is prominently located on Picassoplatz This is a corner lot with, for the most part, six-story building in perimeter block development Distinctive buildings, among them the art museum and the Baloise Insurance Company's free-standing headquarters, are its next-door neighbours The proportioning of the building and the arrangement of each single part is based on a modular systemthe ground floor contains conference rooms and offices as well as access to the underground parking garage The upper floors are reached via a prominent staircase Location of and accessibility to service spaces are organized around a type of core, allowing entry from both sides Single-space offices as well as large open ones are thus possible The high spaces of the 'attic story' are used for conferences, employee's break, and offices The building's facade is rather elegant in dark gray steel photo: Nazar Leskiw Project is not public! 14 photo: Nazar Leskiw photo: Nazar Leskiw Central Signal Box Münchensteinerstrasse Basel This is a railway utility building in Basel, near the Guterbahnhof Wolf called Signal Box and has an exterior cladding of copper strips that are twisted at certain places to admit daylight Herzog and De Meuron won the Pritzker prize in 2001, the jury explained: "The beginnings of most architects practices consists by necessity of small projects with budgets to match It is these early buildings with great constraints that test an architect s talent for original solutions to often ordinary and utilitarian commissions In the case of Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron, the railroad signal box was such a project They transformed a nondescript structure in a railroad yard into a dramatic and artistic work of industrial architecture, captivating both by day and night" Project is not public! 1999 Herzog and De Meuron Schweizerische Bundesbahnen SBB, Anlagen Management boeboe photo: Nazar Leskiw 14

photo: Maarten Thewissen photo: Ryan Taube Musuem Tinguely Grenzacherstrasse Basel Jean Tinguely ( ) grew up in Basel and belonged to the Parisian avant-garde in the 1950s and 60s He stimulated and revolutionized the "static" art world with his kinetic works The Museum's permanent collections present a selection of the artist's machine sculptures, reliefs and drawings from all the periods of his career The Museum also offers a varied and lively programme of temporary shows devoted to Tinguely's fellow artists and contemporaries - Bernhard Luginbühl, Niki de Saint Phalle and Yves Klein - and to his models such as Marcel Duchamp and Kurt Schwitters, as well as to related subjects such as contemporary kinetic art photo: Ryan Taube Floor area/size m² Mario Botta F Hoffman-La Roche, Basel rtaube Tuesday - Sunday Mondays closed Tel: +41 (0) every Sunday there are guided tours: 1130 h (no booking necessary, cost: admission ticket) Main Rail Station SBB: Tram no 2 to Wettsteinplatz, switch to Bus no 31 Badischer Bahnhof: Bus no 36 Highway: exit Basel Wettstein 15

photo: Marco De Trizio photo: Marco De Trizio Allschwilerstrasse Residential and Office Building Allschwilerstrasse Basel This is the first large building in Basel by Herzog and De Meuron The rectangular lot is slightly curved along its length, so the main façade follows this curve The building is located in an upscale residential area in Basel, not too far from the city centre Project is not public! 1988 Herzog and De Meuron Marco_De_Trizio photo: Marco De Trizio 16

photo: Marco de Trizio photo: Marco de Trizio Herzog & De Meuron Office Headquarters Rheinschanze Basel The office headquarters of Swiss architectural firm Herzog and De Meuron are located in Basel The complex is composed of various buildings, one of them a six-storey, glass volume looking towards the Rhine river An interesting detail is the original entrance: a small, simple, wooden door, typical of Basel Public access unknown! 2009 Herzog and De Meuron Marco_De_Trizio photo: Marco de Trizio 17

photo: Evan Chakroff photo: Nazar Leskiw Elsässertor II Centralbahnstrasse Basel This commercial and office building next to Basel's main train station sits between the train tracks and the Centralbahnstrasse, a major thoroughfare The façades along the building's length (facing the street and the tracks) consist of floor-height glass panels tilted at various angles, giving off a fractured reflection of the surrounding historic context The shorter sides of the building are indented to allow for open public space These façades are a double-skin, with the outer layer of glass screen-printed with a colored dot pattern (red on one side, blue on the other) This gives a soft colored glow to the exterior, but (unlike tinted glass) allows clear daylight into the office interior 2005 Herzog and De Meuron evanc photo: Nazar Leskiw 18

photo: Samuel Hasler photo: Bad Allenmoos Ringstrasse Zurich The Bad Allenmoos is in the inventory of local art and historic-cultural objects included, and internationally well known under architects It was built in 1939 by architects ME Haefeli and Werner M Moser together with the landscape architect Gustav Amman They made one of the most beautiful works, a combination of park and swimming pool: A public parkbad The fine and slender architecture, combined with the nearby waterworks make a unprecedented picture In the 1990 s the whole complex was renovated by architect Ueli Zbinden and Kienast Vogt, landscape architect photo: Samuel Hasler Main designer, Landscape architect M E Haefeli Ueli Zbinden Vogt Landschaftarchitekten Werner M Moser City of Zürich Samuel_Hasler Open from the beginning of May, until September Take tram 11 to Bad Allenmoos, and walk another 300 m along the road 19

photo: Hannes Henz photo: Hannes Henz Theater 11 Thurgauerstrasse Zurich 'A case of cannibalism in architecture' is what EM2N architect Daniel Niggli calls his conversion of the Stadthof 11 in Zurich-Oerlikon into a theatre for musicals The new building incorporated everything of the old theatre it could use, though that was little more than the stage house and the cellar, and gave it state-of-the-art technology Faced with the large buildings of its surroundings and the open space in between, the theatre responds without copying their scale Its highest corner juts forward, opening up at the base like a shark's jaws From this corner, the dark casing of perforated sheet metal enveloping both the outer walls and the roof, angles downward until, by the time it gets to the back wall, it is down to the level of the single-family homes there Piercing the perforated sheet-metal shell, a few large windows frame particular views into the building In the evening, light shines through the many small openings in between, which are visible only in outline by day photo: Hannes Henz 2006 EM2N MCH Messe Zuerich Axel_Simon Depend on the agenda Check the website for information on current events Located in Oerlikon, an industrial district in Zurich's north, across the street from the Velodrome and indoor Stadium Public transport: S-Bahn Lines S2, S5, S6, S7, S8, S14, S16 until Bahnhof Oerlikon then take Bus lines 63/94 or Tram line 11 until Messe/Hallenstadion 20

photo: Giovanni Bellinvia photo: Giovanni Bellinvia Novartis Campus - Forum 3 Fabrikstrasse 3 CH-4002 Basel Novartis Campus at Basel will be an international significant place of knowledge and innovation Roger Diener, Helmut Federle and Gerold Wiederin designed and realized the first building, the Forum 3 It is one of the aims of this project to foster communication, creativity and the commitment of the associates through an aesthetic and functional approach to the design of the working environment Both in the building interior and also in the outer spaces, a wide variety of working and meeting areas are being created-providing open, transparent, versatile and flexible spaces that offer plenty of scope for interaction and interdisciplinary teamwork Immensely large coloured glass panels dance almost weightlessly in several layers around the building, making it move, gleam and shimmer, responding to the light at particular times of day and in different weather conditions Inside are office landscapes whose solid elegance combines open-plan spaces with places of concentrated seclusion photo: Giovanni Bellinvia Project is not public! 2005 Main designer, Artist Diener & Diener Gerold Wiederin Helmut Federle Novartis archviews 21

Housing Schwarzpark Gellertstrasse Basel This project contains a great generous public housing because of both their spatial and their material quality Most of them have four bedrooms in a compact container located on one end of an urban park The insertion of the building into the grounds of the park by means of a folded block reduces its visual impact It incorporates various measures that contribute to the saving of energy and sustainable consumption, this without giving up a design that allows for maximum enjoyment of the area photo: Ruedi Walti Project is not public! 23 photo: Marloes Faber photo: Marloes Faber Apartment building Schutzenmattstrasse Basel Sinuous cast-iron screens are used in the façade of this apartment building They resemble drain grilles This inventive use of unexpected but ordinary and readily available things is typical for the work of Herzog and De Meuron "Something mysterious is revealed in the normality of everyday life" photo: Marloes Faber Project is not public! 1993 Herzog and De Meuron unknown Marloes_Faber Close to the city centre There is a post office opposite the building 23

photo: photo: Marloes Faber General Trade School Vogelsangstrasse Basel Four strikingly different structures are grouped around a courtyard The 1950's building houses the industrial trade school and the Hochschule für Kunst und Gestaltung (College of Art and Design) Also noteworthy are Hans Arps stele in the courtyard, and the stepped pyramid the steps form seats by Armin Hofmann Spectacular vaulted ceiling in the gym hall photo: Marloes Faber Project is not public! 1961 Hermann Baur Allgemeine Gewerbeschule und Schule für Gestaltung Marloes_Faber It's close to the railway station "Anschluss Basel-Bad Bahnhof" and quite near to the city centre and Messeplatz Take tram 2/6 and stop at the Gewerbeschule; or Bus 30 to Gewerbeschule 24

photo: Thomas Jantscher photo: Thomas Jantscher La Tuffière CH 1727 Corpataux-Magnedens At first glance, this community centre in Corpataux, seems to have been dropped casually into the middle of the village, with no direct connection to its setting And although the monolithic volume accentuates the confrontation with the neighbouring houses, the building's form actually alludes to an architectural archetype -the farm- which it reinterprets in a contemporary way The simple shape and monolithic aspect have been treated independently of the internal organization generated by the juxtaposition and position of spaces side by side This compact organization within a unified volume can be deciphered on the outside from the wall openings, because each opening is emphasized by a massive concrete frame and has different dimensions and proportions The use of a single material for both roof and façades makes the building stand out as an unique object Its integration with its context hinges on the material used, local tufa, and as such establishes a strong link photo: Thomas Jantscher 2007 Main designer, 2b architectes nbarch City of Corpataux-Magnedens Manuel_Bieler Take exit to Rossens from the highway with direction Fribourg At the intersection of the route to Corpataux et Magnedens, follow signs with direction Corpataux When you are in the centre of the village, you've arrived 25

photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Schaulager Ruchfeldstrasse 19 CH-4142 Basel photo: Naomi Schiphorst The Schaulager ('viewing warehouse') is neither museum nor traditional warehouse It keeps the Emanuel Hoffmann collection in optimal condition and is primarily accessible for specialists: conservators, curators, researchers etc The heavy outer wall is built up in layers and its outer surface scratched, exposing the pebbles excavated on site This material is not only a visual expression of weight and storage but also, as a result of its great inertia, an essential factor in the interior climate control On one side the box is somewhat indented, creating a forecourt, so that the entrance side is visible from great distance It appears to be guarded by a small building with a gabled roof The courtyard-like space radiates urbanism and publicness Schaulager is thus not simply an anonymous box on the urban periphery, but rather a place that is active and self-confident, expanding the public dimension of the city of Basel to the south, towards the new district of Dreispitz/Münchenstein Project is not public! Floor area/size m² Herzog and De Meuron Emanuel Hoffmann Foundation Laurenz Foundation MI_MOA The building is ONLY OPEN for the public during exhibitions! 27 photo: Marieke Mannens photo: Marieke Mannens REHAB Basel Im Burgfelderhof Basel You expect clinics to look, well, clinical, modernist, austerely immaculate boxes, hygienically white inside and out REHAB Basel is a privately run rehabilitation clinic for patients with spinal-cord or brain injuries, they can stay here up to 18 months It appears residential and natural, though not with a funky, down-home earthiness, but crispy modern Here, oak, pine, larch, and ironwoods enclose and screen exterior walls, and a rectilinear plan brings daylight and landscape into its precincts through courtyards, grassy roofs, glazed walls, upper-level decks, and skylights The double and single rooms have daylight from above and an outside balcony The indoor swimming pool offers views into the sky from a pyramid-like dome above The floors are very wide, open giving wheelchair-bound patients a sense of autonomy Almost a place where anyone would like to live photo: Marieke Mannens Project is not public! 29 photo: Goran Potkonjak photo: Goran Potkonjak Novartis office Fabrikstrasse 6 CH-4002 Basel Before the advent of modern scientific methods in chemistry and pharmacology, it was the alchemists who endeavoured to discover remedies for human ailments The office building Peter Märkli architekten designed for pharmaceutical giant Novartis Pharma recalls alchemy's other enterprise, its attempts to turn base metals into gold: or rather, Märkli has succeeded in maintaining that illusion The anodised aluminium of the loadbearing façades has been coated with a champagne-coloured paint and the air ducts that run across the roof are encased in gold-coloured aluminium sandwich board While such non-designed service elements are often an eyesore, here they look like costly treasures photo: Goran Potkonjak Project is not public! 2006 Peter Märkli Novartis Pharma Kirsten_Hannema The campus and offices of Novartis are not open to the public, its like a forbidden city for architecture lovers Maybe you could get in with a tour from the Basel ure Museum but don't count on it The campus is situated next to the river, just before (or after) the Dreirosenbrucke Coming from France: Motorway A35/E60 direction Basel, after customs enter left into the tunnel and follow the signs to Basel St Johann From EuroAirport Basel take Airport Express Bus PTT 50 to Kannenfeldplatz Change to Tram 1 (direction Dreirosenbrücke) stop Novartis Campus Across the street you find the main entrance to the Novartis Campus From Bahnhof Basel, also take tram 1, same way 29

photo: Georg Gisel photo: Georg Gisel Im Birch School Margrit-Rainer-Strasse Zurich Peter Märkli demonstrates that 'big' does not necessarily mean 'anonymous' but can also stand for 'dense' With a length of 250 metres, this school in Zurich is quite a hunk Even so, it fits into the scale of the former industrial district and can be taken in at a glance Two four-storey volumes, slightly staggered, face each other The third volume contains the gym, one of the biggest in town Despite the stateliness and severity, there is never a feeling of monumentality This comes from the scale of the building's volumes, for Märkli is a master of proportion; the vertical texture of the concrete articulates all of the façades, and the uppermost strip, forming the edge of the roof, recedes slightly This prevents the corners of the building from appearing apart from the top Märkli applies this knowledge completely naturally, even though it is no longer familiar today The slight shifts that distinguish his work therefore keep being seen as a lack of precision photo: Georg Gisel Public access unknown! 2004 Project manager Associate architect Artist Project manager Landscape designer Peter Märkli Christof Ansorge Gody Kühnis Hans Josephsohn Jakob Frischknecht Zulauf Seippel Schweingruber City of Zurich Axel_Simon 34

photo: Milo Keller photo: Milo Keller Cow Shed Le Cerisier 2523 Lignières In 2003, two Swiss farmers commissioned Localarchitecture to design a free-stall barn for 30 cows The brief for the design was to minimize earthworks and provide a balance of cuts and fills It was to be positioned near the existing farm, delineating an outdoor space for the livestock it houses Keen to respect the local architectural tradition, the architects conducted a detailed analysis of regional farm typologies, identifying two types The earliest is characterized by a roof ridge set perpendicularly to the contour lines, creating building façades that are generously open to the valley This model's disadvantage is that it makes any enlargement problematic As agriculture became more mechanized, therefore, this layout was replaced by a more flexible typology, with a roof ridge running parallel to the contour lines and side gables By combining these two types, the architects have created a synthesis of different traditions, giving them a contemporary shape with a new identity photo: Milo Keller Project is not public! 2005 Localarchitecture Daniel Juan + Fernand Cuche Manuel_Bieler 53

photo: Jeroen Meijer photo: Jeroen Meijer Haus Rudin Off Rue du Waldeck Leymen France With a simple volume and a gabled roof, Herzog & de Meuron have overdrawn the situation to a certain extent The type corresponds to what is generally understood to be a 'house', yet the building is nevertheless different The exterior form could be described as the prototype of a house, as the architects themselves claim, yet it also plays with a children's drawing On the other hand, it evokes the impression of a view of a monolithic block, albeit a raised one, floating above the ground The cantilevered floors, which project from the outside of the building, appear like a presentation tableau, raising the house while distancing it from its context The building also produces the impression of being a compact volume because roof overhangs are missing In stark contrast to the grey exterior, there are soft colours inside and the lapidary spatial concept is countered by the unusual access from below and the high space above the stairs photo: Jeroen Meijer Project is not public! 1998 Herzog and De Meuron Hanspeter Rudin jpmm Leymen is a small French rural village, south-east of Basel on the D23 It is just on the other side of the border from Biel-Benken There is good public transport (tramway) from Basel 85
