2 Getty Center Getty Center Drive 1200 Los Angeles California The Getty Center straddles two hillside ridges in the Santa Monica mountains like a modernist Acropolis This campus of buildings is more than just a museum; it is also a concert hall, an office complex, a research centre and a library The museum is composed of five galleries arranged around a long courtyard fountain The skin of all of the buildings is composed of 30-inch square panels, made of aluminium painted white, Meier's signature Even the Italian travertine stonework follows this 30-inch grid pattern The use of white in Meier's projects allows him to skilfully manipulate the natural light, reflecting the colours of the building's environment The buildings are the most beautiful in the late afternoon/dusk when the golden light washes across the travertine and the sun sets across the Pacific Ocean m² Client Richard Meier Robert Irwin J Paul Getty Trust Tuesday, thursday and sunday / Friday and saturday From the 405 freeway, exit at Getty Center Drive Signs will direct you to a parking garage where you can board a tram that takes you 15 miles up the hill to the museum complex Entrance to the museum is free, but parking costs $8 2

3 Walt Disney Concert Hall S Grand Avenue 111 Los Angeles California Sitting atop the historic Bunker Hill in downtown Los Angeles, the Walt Disney Concert Hall occupies a site adjacent to the existing Music Center in Los Angeles Originally conceived in 1987, the project was put on hold for nearly 12 years, until the necessary funding was found After Gehry's success with the Guggenheim in Bilbao, Spain, the project plans quickly moved forward and construction began in 1999 At the opening ceremony, Gehry recounted his ideas of inspiration for the project that he had shared with Mrs Disney He said that she should think of the Hall as a bowl of white roses, and that he wanted to make a flower for her m² Acoustics consultant Client Yasuhisa Toyota Los Angeles Philharmonic There is a variety of different tours offered at the concert hall The outdoor gardens are open for free, but they close after sunset From the 101 Freeway South, exit Hope Street and turn right The building will be two blocks on your right From the 101 Freeway North, exit Grand Avenue and turn right The building will be two blocks on your left 3

4 SCI-Arc East 3rd Street 960 Los Angeles California The Southern California Institute of ure (SCI-Arc) has long been one of America's most vocally avant-garde schools, and recently it decamped from its warehouse facility on Los Angeles's Westside to a promising former freight depot just east of downtown, next to a nascent loft district Designating and encouraging the next generation of Southern California figures beyond that of the well-known eminences Thom Mayne and Eric Owen Moss, SCI-Arc's then-director Neil Denari looked to his faculty to design the space He selected Gary Paige, director of the undergraduate program at the time The building, an industrial leftover in Los Angeles's sprawling rail-yard landscape, was a mixed blessing The robust poured-in-place-concrete structure, built in 1906, came with Herculean transverse beams, generous volumes, and scores of large openings for former loading docks (text by Joseph Giovannini from ural Record) m² Associate architect Structural engineer Client Gary Paige Studio Kappe s Planners Nabih Youssef Associates Structural Engineers SCI-Arc Roderick 4

5 High School No 9 for the Visual and Performing Arts N Grand Ave 450 Los Angeles California High School #9 is the latest addition to the LA Unified School District's investment in forward thinking architecture Located on the edge of the 'canyon' created by the 101 freeway, it sits directly opposite of the Cathedral in downtown Los Angeles The school campus will include four academies for education in music, dance, theater arts and visual arts, and a theatre which will be open to the public The theatre lobby that forms the public entrance to the theatre, symbolically emphazises the openness of the school to the public and simultaneously serves as an exhibition space which can be linked to the visual arts studios and the event space on top of the tower A truncated cone, placed at the centre of the site, serves as an oculus to the library below A grand stair case wrapping around the cone creates a large public space that still affords some privacy in the busyness of downtown Project is not public! m² Coop Himmelb(l)au Not yet open to the public From downtown LA, take Grand Ave north over the 101 freeway; High School #9 will be on your right 5

7 photo: Raúl González photo: Raúl González Ennis House Glendower Ave 2607 Los Angeles California CA The Ennis House is a residential dwelling in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles, California,, south of Griffith Park The home was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for Charles and Mabel Ennis in 1923 and was built in 1924 Following La Miniatura in Pasadena, and the Storer and Freeman Houses in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles, the structure is the fourth and largest of Wright's textile block designs, constructed primarily of interlocking pre-cast concrete blocks, in the northern Los Angeles area The design is based on ancient Mayan temples, and along with other buildings by Frank Lloyd Wright, such as the A D German Warehouse in Wisconsin and Aline Barnsdall Hollyhock House in Hollywood, the Ennis House is sometimes referred to as an example of the Mayan Revival architecture Its prominent detail is the relief ornamentation on its textile blocks, inspired by the symmetrical reliefs of Mayan buildings in Uxmal photo: Raúl González Public access unknown! m², Interior architect, Landscape architect Client Frank Lloyd Wright archraulgonz Ennis-Brown 7

8 Alexander Science Center School South Figueroa St 3737 Los Angeles California nterschool/sciencecenterschoolphp Operated as a joint venture between the California Science Center and the LAUSD, the Alexander Science Center School has the distinct privilege of being sited between world class science museums, and University of Southern California (USC) The school features an integrated curriculum emphasizing science, mathematics and the use of technology, and this is reflected in the architecture The planted roof on the north building reduces heat load thereby reducing demand on the mechanical systems The siting of the building below the established grade and with the protection of a large planted berm on Exposition Blvd protects the lower level of the structure from intense sun exposure m² Morphosis 8

9 photo: photo: Raúl González Hollyhock Barnsdall Art Park 4800 Los Angeles California CA Hollyhock House ( ) is Frank Lloyd Wright s first Los Angeles project, representing his earliest efforts to develop an architecture style for Southern California Wright himself referred to it as California Romanza, using a musical term meaning 'freedom to make one s own form' Hollyhock House is a remarkable combination of house and gardens A series of rooftop terraces extend the living space and provide magnificent views of the Los Angeles basin and Hollywood Hills Wright and Barnsdall worked together to develop a plan that included a home for Barnsdall and her daughter, 2 secondary residences, theater, director s house, dormitory for actors, studios for artists, shops and motion picture theater Because of financial and artistic differences, only the main home and two secondary residences were built Feb 2015 it reopened after several years when a major restoration was completed The original garage was outfitted as a brand new visitors center, museum store and archive photo: Raúl González 1921, Interior architect Frank Lloyd Wright archraulgonz Hours: Thursday - Sunday, 11:00 am to 4:00 pm Last ticket sold at 3:30 pm Hollyhock House is closed the following dates: Oct 3 and 26?maintenance and upkeep Nov 11 Veteran's Day Nov 24, 25, 26, 27 Thanksgiving Dec 24, 25, 26 Christmas Dec 31, Jan 1 New Years 9

10 Chiat Day Office Building Main Street 340 Los Angeles California Frank Gehry's Chiat/Day office building is a collaborative project with Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen who are known for their monumental artworks of everyday objects The binoculars at the entrance contain two small conference rooms with the eyepieces serving as skylights for the rooms The building also showcases one of Gehry's first uses of a thin metal panel skin, seen in his later works like the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles 1991 Artist Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen From Freeway 10, exit at Lincoln Boulevard and head south Turn right onto Rose Avenue and head towards the beach Turn left onto Main Street, and the building will be on your left 10

11 Gehry House 22nd Street 1002 Santa Monica California Normally, one doesn't expect a Deconstructivist iconic building nestled in a quiet, suburban setting, but that is the house that Frank Gehry built in Santa Monica The original two-storey "dumb little house with charm," as Mr Gehry famously called it, can still be seen behind his renovation While his later experiments in architecture tended toward extravagantly curved titanium skins, in his earlier works everyday materials and techniques such as corrugated metal, chain-link fence and exposed structure were used In some examples, he wraps the entire building with these materials, completely encapsulating them However, in doing so, he also frees the building to do much more than it originally could A renovation in 1993 softened some of the original experimentation, but the original ideas can still be seen in this unique house Project is not public! 1978 From the 10 Freeway, take the Cloverfield exit and turn right At Santa Monica Boulevard, turn left and take the first right onto 23rd Street At Washington Avenue, turn left and the house will be one block down on the left 11

12 photo: Lindsay Drake Getty Center Central Garden Getty Center Drive 1200 Los Angeles California The Central Garden at the Getty Center was a topic of much controversy during its construction Designed by famed painter Robert Irwin, the gardens do not follow the gridded nature of the adjacent buildings, but rather slash across the 'valley', and mix bright swathes of colour against the green lawns before ending in a large circular pool Richard Meier so hated the garden's design that a documentary called 'Concert of Wills: Making the Getty Center' primarily focuses on the arguments between the two designers Luckily for us, Irwin's design won out As Irwin puts it, "A garden is an adventure, and nature is probably the closest thing you're going to get to that kind of -- moving in a world, you know -- push-pull, in-out, up-down, right and wrong After a certain time, once the garden got going, it changed all the rules It did things that were so much better than I had thought" m² Artist, Landscape architect Robert Irwin photo: Ken McCown Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday: Friday and Saturday: From the 405 freeway, exit at Getty Center Drive Signs will direct you to a parking garage where you can board a tram that takes you 15 miles up the hill to the museum complex Entrance to the museum is free, but parking costs $8 12

14 Colorado Court Colorado Avenue 502 Santa Monica California The Colorado Court project is the first affordable housing project in the to achieve a LEED gold rating as well as the first to be 100% energy neutral It features a natural gas powered turbine/heat recovery system that generates the base electrical load and hot water demands for the building and a solar electric panel system integrated into the façade and roof of the building, which supplies most of the peak load electricity demand If the panels generate more electricity than needed, the excess is fed back into the utility grid Project is not public! m² Brooks + Scarpa s From the 10 freeway, exit 5th Street in Santa Monica, it will appear on the left 14
