38 38 The CBPG Magazine 17th August - 20th September 2018 Issue 22 Spanish Property Guides CYCLOGICAL August 18 MIGUEL INDURAIN SPORTIF TH EDITION by Gary and Lynn from Cyclogical in Quesada On Friday 20th July four of us left the shop at 4.30 am: our mechanic, Harry Morrow, Martyn Stone and my stepson Mathew Moth Robertson all set to travel the 700kms to Pamplona in Navarre for the 2019 Pinarello roadshow and the 27th edition Miguel Indurain Sportif. It was an early start and a long journey, however, without any problems and quiet roads we arrived at our Hotel safely at 12noon where we immediately noticed the change in temperature - it was 10 degrees colder up here! We unloaded our bikes and checked into our rooms, then proceeded to the dining room for lunch as we were absolutely famished. After lunch we drove 10km to Pinarello s factory where we were treated like The 2019 Pinarello Gan royalty by the staff. We had cheese and wine and were shown round the factory before seeing the exciting new 2019 Pinarello range, including new e-bikes and the re-born Prince superbike. All dealers were given a 2019 model Pinarello Gan Disk with Ultegra groupset especially designed for the event which one of us had to use during the Sportif along with special commemorative cycle top and shorts. We had a good chat with the Pinarello staff and learned all about the history of Pinarello Espana - it was their 25th Anniversary and we were all presented with a beautiful 1.5 litre bottle of Rioja in a lovely wooden case as a thank you for being part of the Pinarello family. We returned to the hotel at 6pm, got washed and changed ready to board the bus which took us to the El Torro Hotel in Villava, home of Miguel Indurian. The dining room was beautifully set for our 6 course evening meal with Miguel Indurian s Pinarello Time Trials bike and his Pinarello road bike both on display these were the bikes that he used when he won the Tour De France - 5 separate occasions, 1991, 92, 93, 94 and 95! After dinner, Miguel Indurian himself gave an excellent presentation about his life and cycling in general (I m glad that we had Harry to translate). At 1am we then boarded the buses to return to our hotel as it was an early rise the next morning with breakfast at 6am followed by a photo shoot with all the Pinarello dealers in Arriving in Pamplona Spain on Pinarello bikes in front of the hotel (. Martyn was testing the new Gan. We left the hotel at 7am and cycled en mass for 30 minutes to the centre of the town in Vallava where again we had our photos taken with Miguel Indurain and Pinarello. All riders had to sign on just like the start of every stage in the tour before making their way to the start line where we got to start right at the front with Miguel as we were guests of Pinarello. There was 2 separate routes this year 160km and 100km, Harry, Martyn and myself opted for the short one whilst Moth had no choice he was doing the long one like it or not. The race started promptly at 8.00am and the 4000 riders were soon underway. There were police outriders to the front and rear and at most junctions, the roads were completely closed for the first 50-60km after which the groups had thinned out considerably, the whole race was also televised by helicopter which followed us most of the way. There were many small accidents on route, especially now that it had started to rain and the usual number of people at the side of the road with punctures. Passing through all the small towns and villages it was amazing to see all the locals out cheering us on - this has been a major event for this area for the last 27 years. There were 2 category 3 climbs and one category 2 climb on our route giving a total ascent of 1,500metres with a total distance of 100kms and the temperature never rose above 20 degrees which was great for us. After 2hrs 58mins Harry crossed the finish line and secured a Gold medal for his class. I finished 12 minutes behind Harry and Martyn finished in 3hrs 29mins meaning we both also got Gold medals in our class. Moth, who was doing the long one, had come off in the rain along with another 5 riders but just picked himself up, checked his bike and got on with it, finishing in 55th position and just missing a gold medal by 10mins (he still got Silver and a big scar on his leg!). The main thing was, we all finished safely. The event was well sponsored with live music at the end, food for the competitors and many of the large sponsors had tents and were displaying bikes and accessories. There was secure parking for all bikes, free food and drink, and also massages for anyone willing to queue. The weather by now had settled and was dry. The prize-giving unfortunately was not until 4pm and as it was only 12 noon we decided to cycle back to the hotel for a gin and tonic. We had decided to stay overnight as last year we drove home immediately after the race and were all knackered. Saturday night we got a taxi into the centre of Pamplona for supper then back to the hotel for an early night. Harry, Gary, Moth and Martyn Sunday morning we were up early refuelled the van after loading the bikes and hit the road. It was raining most of the way back and it soon turned into sleet followed by heavy snow forcing the traffic almost to a standstill. After about 10km it cleared and we soon saw the temperature rise and as we approached the Costa Blanca the sun was out. This was a fantastic weekend which was exceptionally well organized from start to finish. It was so nice to meet Miguel Indurain again and have the opportunity to cycle with him on the Saturday morning - he s a really nice guy! Pinarello did us proud with their commitment to their own road show and to the Sportif making sure everything went smoothly and was a great success. Looking forward to next year s event already! A trick used by viruses to make us sick - stealth spheres - has been discovered by scientists. It had been thought viruses were all lone wolves, each on a solo campaign of infection. Instead they can form packs of up to 40 viruses and surround themselves with a fatty sphere that makes them invisible to our body s defences. The team at the US National Institutes of Health say their findings rewrite the Chinese researchers have taken what they say is a major step forward for the development of a new generation of solar cells. Manufacturers have long used silicon to make solar panels because the material was the most efficient at converting sunlight into electricity. But organic photovoltaics, made from carbon and plastic, promise a cheaper way of generating electricity. This new study shows that organics can now be just as efficient as silicon. What are organic solar cells? The term organic relates to the fact that carbon-based materials are at the heart of these devices, rather than silicon. The square or rectangular solid solar panels that most of us are familiar with, require fixed installation points usually on roofs or in flat fields. Organic photovoltaics (OPV) can be made of compounds that are dissolved in ink so they can be printed on thin rolls of plastic, they can bend or curve around structures or even be incorporated into clothing. textbooks of infection. Now this new study pushes that beyond 17% with the authors saying that up to 25% is possible.this is important because according to estimates, with a 15% efficiency and a 20 year lifetime, organic solar cells could produce electricity at a cost of less than 7 cents per kilowatt-hour. The spheres acted like an invisibility cloak that prevents the immune system spotting the viruses The spheres protected the viruses from harsh environments including stomach acid And they helped viruses reach their target in larger numbers and overwhelm cells in the intestines The researchers infected animals with a set number of viruses that were either released on their own or packaged into the stealth spheres. Dr Altan-Bonnet told the BBC: The animals that got the vesicles got disease much faster and had more severe symptoms. We think by being inside [the vesicles] the viruses the same structure, said one of the authors, Dr Yongsheng Chen, from Nankai University in Tianjin, China. We have two layers of active materials, each layer can absorb different wavelengths of light. That means you can use sunlight in the wider wavelengths or more efficiently and this can generate more current. How far are these from commercial production? Not that far away according to the researchers. Dr Yongsheng Chen compares the OPV to organic lightemitting diodes, or OLED. This technology has been introduced in the past few years and is widely used for high-end TVs. These are already commercial, and they use a similar material to OPV, Dr Yongsheng Chen told BBC News. The physical principle is the same, just a different direction, one is from solar to electricity, the other from electricity to light, the device and structure are similar. I am very positive for OPV, and it may not need five years, he added. What type of application might we expect? become invisible and take longer to clear. Their optional semitransparency enables their use in windows or glass facade shading, said Dr Alexander Colsmann and expert on organic photovoltaics from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. The very same properties render organic solar cells ideally or drugs that stop them forming in the first place. Dr Altan-Bonnet says the need for better ways of tackling diseases like norovirus should not be underestimated: Even healthy people like you or I, we get so sick we wouldn t go to work for days. Its liquid coming violently out of both ends, there s a lot of economic cost, and for children and elderly it can be fatal. The researchers say poliovirus and rhinovirus, a cause of the common cold, can also form these stealth spheres. Jonathan Ball, a professor of virology at the University of Nottingham, said the findings were a surprise. He told the BBC: These vesicles seems to give the viruses increased infectivity when compared to naked individual viruses. Why this increased concentration of viruses results in better levels of entry is unclear, and no doubt will be an important next question. Dr Feng Gao from Linköping University in Sweden also believes the new paper is significant. This work is a very important contribution to organic solar cells and will certainly inspire new developments in the field, he said by . The tandem organic solar cells with record efficiencies in this work indicate great potential of organic solar cells for practical applications.

The American defenceresearch agency Darpa is currently developing biostasis to slow down the body at a molecular level. Biostasis would extend the so-called golden hour the time that wounded troops have to reach medical attention. Biostasis could also potentially extend the shelf life of blood stores and other pharmaceuticals, by slowing down the reaction times of the chemicals Biostasis intends to slow down the speed at which life operates. I originally conceived the programme to explore a diverse array of potential technologies, ranging from molecular pharmacology to biocompatible materials chemistry and engineered intrinsically disordered Biostasis could also potentially extend the shelf life of blood stores and other pharmaceuticals by slowing down the reaction times of the chemicals. One of the most pressing potential applications of biostasis technology is in the preservation and storage of therapeutic biomolecules like vaccines, antibodies, and enzymes, explains McClure-Begley. Being able to reliably preserve the functional capacity of those products without a costly and cumbersome cold chain [frozen storage] is a major goal of the programme. However, biostasis is only intended for medical emergencies, not longterm use. We need to look to nature for inspiration on longer-term solutions. Some creatures, such as wood frogs, exhibit a capability known as cryptobiosis, which is where all metabolic processes have apparently stopped, yet they remain alive, allowing them to survive being frozen solid. Other animals, such as bears, can enter Some animals like the wood frog can stop their metabolic processes, yet remain alive hibernation where their metabolism slows down considerably and reawaken months later. Humans already do this medically, albeit to a much lesser extent. In cases of cardiac arrests or brain injuries, therapeutic hypothermia can be used to cool down an injured patient and put them in a low-metabolic state for a couple of days, allowing the body time to recover. Based on this treatment, Torpor is being developed to induce hibernation in astronauts for NASA s Mars mission. The process for Torpor works in two key phases: the initial cooling period during, which involves sedation, and the subsequent warming/ waking period. In a clinical setting you are under pretty heavy sedation and using invasive cooling systems, but we are looking at new pharmaceuticals that can minimise the amount of sedation required to enter this state and simplify the cooling process, explains John Bradford, President and Chief Operating Officer of SpaceWorks. Placing someone in a cryogenic state is a lot more complicated than simply freezing them It has been shown that dropping our body temperature by as little as 5 C allows us to reduce our metabolism the chemical processes within our body in order to maintain life by over 50%. Animals that hibernate do live longer, so there is a recovery factor. If you are in this state for six months, there will be some recovery, possibly three months, given the metabolic rate drops by 50%, says Bradford. However, this aspect is not our primary motivation and a lot more research will be required to quantify this effect, if any. Torpor could also potentially be used for patients awaiting organ donations. The aforementioned technologies slow the metabolic rate, but how plausible is the suspended animation of science fiction? The most well-known of these is cryonics, which involves freezing a body to approximately -190 C (-310 F) with the aim of reviving the patient later. However, placing someone in a cryogenic state is a lot more complicated than simply freezing them. We wash out the blood and then infuse the patient with a cryo-protective solution, explains Victoria Stevens of Cryonics UK. Rather than turning them into a solid state, it turns them into a glass state, thereby reducing ice crystal damage. Biostasis could extend the golden hour - the time that soldiers have to reach proper medical attention Cryonics is only used after the heart has stopped. The idea is that medical science will advance sufficiently in the future to allow revival and treatment. Nobody has been revived yet, as we currently do not have the technology to be able to do that, says Stevens. If we did, then we probably would not need to cryo-preserve in the first place. Practical time dilation would necessitate such complex engineering and energy requirements that it remains unfeasible Although hundreds have already been cryopreserved, cryonics is an extreme process. This is a completely experimental development that has not reached its conclusion, admits Stevens. In 2001, 13-month-old Erika Nordby was trapped in snow and entered a hibernation-like state for approximately two hours, before being successfully revived. During that time, Erika had no heartbeat and was clinically dead. Whilst this may offer some hope that we could one day develop suspended animation, it was an isolated incident that has not yet been replicated. As time is a fundamental aspect of our reality, we cannot stop it any more than we could stop depth or width. Furthermore, practical time dilation would necessitate such complex engineering and energy requirements that it remains unfeasible. Could bioengineering projects be the solution to this seeming impossibility, finally allowing us to sidestep time? Maybe, says McClure-Begley. But don t stay up at night waiting for it. The world conqueror apparently met what he called a gymnosophist a naked, wise man, possibly a yogi sitting on a rock and staring at the sky, and asked him, What are you doing?. I m experiencing nothingness. What are you doing? the gymnosophist replied. I am conquering the world, Alexander said. They both laughed; each one thought the other was a fool, and was wasting their life. This story takes place long before that first zero was inscribed on Gwalior s temple wall, but the gymnosophist meditating on nothingness does in fact have a connection to the digit s invention. Systems such as yoga were developed to encourage meditation and the emptying of the mind, while both the Buddhist and Hindu religions embrace the concept of nothingness as part of their teachings. Dr Peter Gobets, secretary of the Netherlandsbased ZerOrigIndia Foundation, or the Zero Project, which researches the origins of the zero digit, noted in an article on the invention of zero that Mathematical zero ( shunya in Sanskrit) may have arisen from the contemporaneous philosophy of emptiness or Shunyata [a Buddhist doctrine of emptying one s mind from impressions and thoughts]. In addition, the nation has long had a fascination with sophisticated mathematics. Early Indian mathematicians were obsessed with giant numbers, counting well into the trillions when the Ancient Greeks stopped at about 10,000. They even had different types of infinity. One theory is that some cultures had a negative view of the concept of nothingness. For example, there was a time in the early days of Christianity in Europe when religious leaders banned the use of zero because they felt that, since God is in everything, a symbol that represented nothing must be satanic. So maybe there is something to these connected ideas, to the spiritual wisdom of India that gave rise to meditation and the invention of zero. There s another connected idea, too, which has had a profound effect on the modern world. The concept of zero by Claudia What you should and Hammond shouldn t do in a heat wave As summer temperatures climb, keeping cool becomes a priority. But what age-old tips are worth sticking to? BBC Future takes a look. Hot drinks can cool you down in hot weather by causing you to sweat more With heat waves everywhere from Japan to the UK, and Algeria to California, everyone has plenty of tips on how to keep cool. But which tips and facts stand up to scientific scrutiny? We look at the evidence for whether you should 1) 1) Stick to to cold cold rather than than hot drinks hot drinks Drinking plenty of liquid is the right thing to do during a heat wave: it s is essential to a system that s at the basis of modern computing: binary numbers. Silicon Valley, India-style As you drive out of Bengaluru s Kempegowda International Airport towards the city centre, about 37km away, you re greeted by several large signs stuck somewhat incongruously into the ground of rural India. They proclaim the names of the new gods of modern India, the companies at the forefront of the digital revolution. Intel, Google, Apple, Oracle, Microsoft, Adobe, Samsung and Amazon all have offices in Bengaluru, along with home-grown heroes like Infosys and Wipro. The sleek airport and shiny signs are the first indicators of transformation. Before the IT industry came to Bengaluru, it was called Bangalore, and was known as Garden City. Now it s Bengaluru and is known as the Silicon Valley of India. What started in the 1970s as a single industrial park, Electronic City, to expand the electronics industry in the state of Karnataka, has paved the way for today s boomtown. The city now boasts many IT parks and is home to nearly 40% of the country s IT industry. Bengaluru may even overtake Silicon Valley, with predictions suggesting it could become the single largest IT hub on Earth by 2020, with two million IT professionals, six million indirect IT jobs and $80 billion in IT exports. It s binary numbers that make this possible. Modern-day digital computers operate on the principle of two possible states, on and off. The on state is assigned the value 1, while the off state is assigned the value 0. Or, zero. It is perhaps not surprising that binary number system was also invented in India, in the 2nd or 3rd Centuries BCE by a musicologist named Pingala, although this use was for prosody, said Subhash Kak, historian of science and astronomy and Regents Professor at Oklahoma State University. This causes you to sweat more, which cools you down. The human body can produce up to two litres of sweat per hour, which is an effective way of reducing your core body temperature. But if that liquid is not replaced you soon become dehydrated and geographical centre of Bengaluru, a symbol of old Bangalore and the first must-see place locals recommend. Originally designed in 1760 with many later additions, it has a distinctly Victorian feel to it, featuring 150 types of roses and a glass pavilion made in the late 1800s and patterned after London s famous Crystal Palace. Lalbagh is a treasure in a city that is one of the fastest growing in Asia, and a charming reminder of the days when Bengaluru was a favourite spot for retired British civil servants during the days of the Raj. They built quaint cottages with large gardens and quietly whiled away their retirement years enjoying the temperate climate and ideal growing conditions of the sleepy town. But old Bangalore Electronic City in Bengaluru is predicted to become the single largest IT hub on Earth by 2020 so some recommend avoiding hot drinks altogether. Some also argue that you shouldn t have too much tea or coffee, as these contain dehydrationcausing caffeine. However, there is little evidence that moderate amounts of caffeine act as a diuretic. It s true that some research has backed up the idea that cold drinks are better. There have been studies where people undertook vigorous exercise and then had their is disappearing beneath much-needed infrastructure construction and the city s ambitious expansion. In the 10 years from 1991 to 2001, Bengaluru grew a whopping 38%, and it s now the 18th most populous city in the world with 12 million people. The traffic is arguably the worst in India, as infrastructure planning has not kept pace with the development of the many IT parks and the never-ending influx of IT workers. The chaos and congestion that s the hallmark of India s metropolises reaches something of a zenith in Bengaluru, where it can take an hour to drive 3km. Nevertheless, the inhabitants carry bravely on, living as close to the hightech campuses as possible and even on them in some cases creating start-ups, designing software and supplying the world with IT products and know-how. It s hard to imagine the number of computer chips and bits and programs that have come from Bengaluru, the number of computers and devices built and powered. And even more impossible to imagine is the number of binary-system zeroes it has all taken. And yet all of this started in India from nothing. core body temperature measured while drinking hot or cold drinks: it was found that cold drinks were the most effective at cooling them down. But there is one possible problem with these findings and that s the the method used to measure the temperature. The brave volunteers were given rectal thermometers. As Ollie Jay, associate professor in thermoregulatory physiology at the University of Ottawa, has pointed out, the liquid from a cold

It s little wonder, therefore, that the temperature appears to go down. When his team experimented with taking measurements from eight thermometers on different parts of the body instead, they found that hot drinks cooled the body more because they increased the sweat response, as predicted. So hot drinks will cool you more by making you sweat. Still, there is one situation where hot drinks won t cool you down: if it s exceptionally humid or you are wearing so many clothes that the sweat doesn t have a chance to evaporate. In that case, stick to a cold beverage. Verdict: False. Hot drinks will cool you faster unless it s extremely humid. 2) Get 2) a Get fana fan The breeze of a fan feels like welcome relief. Fans don t cool the air. They move it around, with the aim of creating a breeze to increase the efficiency of the body s normal methods of keeping cool via convection of heat from the skin and evaporation of sweat from the skin. Fans are used widely. One case report even gives an example of three patients with heatstroke who were cooled down using the downdraft from a light helicopter. But the evidence that fans work is mixed. The authors of Cochrane Reviews scour the world for the best trials, assess them A fan won t cool you down if the air itself is too hot and try to come to conclusions about the efficacy of different treatments or interventions. Their attempt to do this in 2012 with fans of any kind was hindered by the lack of randomised controlled trials. Instead most studies were observational. Some of these found that fans helped; others found that if the temperature was very high, they could even hinder it. Young people as well as the elderly are more sensitive to the effects of heat waves In general, it s thought that fans might work when the temperature is up to 35C (95F). Above that (some studies say at 37C (98.6F) or higher), blowing hot air across the body could increase convective heat gain, worsening the situation and leading to heat exhaustion. So if it s exceptionally hot, fans might even increase dehydration. Fans are less effective when it s humid. Although the air is still moved around, it s already laden with moisture, making it harder for the sweat to evaporate. But until randomised controlled trials are conducted, we can t know for sure what effect a fan might have and such trials are not easy to plan. Researchers would need to have everything ready to go as soon as a heat wave began. Even then, they might wait several years until the temperatures are just right. What we do know is that fans aren t always a foolproof solution. In a 1999 heatwave in Cincinnati, 17 people died and 10 had fans which were switched on when the people were found dead. Of course, what we don t know is if they would have died sooner without the fans, or if the reason these people had bought fans was that they lived in the hottest buildings. Verdict: More data needed but if it hits 37C, it s probably best to keep the fan off. 3) 3) Only older people need worry need about worry the about impact the on their impact health on their health It is true that hospital admissions do rise during heat waves and that many of these patients will be older. The temperatures at which the body works best fall within a narrow range 36 to 37.5C (96.8 to 99.5F). Thermoreceptors throughout the skin, deep tissues and organs can immediately detect an increase of as little as 1C. If the ambient temperature is higher than our body temperature, we start sweating to get cool. We also radiate heat by sending more blood to our hands and feet, which is why they can feel so hot at night. Both of these methods of thermoregulation require the heart to do more work, which is why older people can sometimes experience heart attacks or heart failure. And unlike with the health effects of a cold snap, this can happen fast: most deaths occur during the first 24 hours of a heat wave. Another issue is that older people have a harder time maintaining their core body temperature and they might not even notice they are overheating, which means they can become dehydrated more quickly than younger people. But that doesn t mean that only the elderly are at risk in a heat wave. Young babies and people with chronic health conditions are more likely to have issues as well. So is anyone with mobility issues, simply because it s harder to walk to the window to open it or to fetch drinks to replace the liquids lost through sweating. If it s hot during the day and the night, it can be hard for the body to cool down at all. The European heat wave of 2003 is estimated to have killed at least 30,000 people; some figures put the total as high as 70,000. Of the 15,000 who died in France, 1,321 were under the age of 64. Verdict: False. Older people need to be particularly careful, but so do many others. 4) Open all 4) Open the windows all the windows Opening the windows is the first thing most of us do when it s hot. But during the day, this can backfire. You should only open the windows if the air outside is cooler than the air inside, which is most likely to happen at night. In really hot weather, you should close the windows during the day. Because there s more shade indoors the air might even be cooler. Even if you can get a breeze to flow through your home or office, if it s a hot breeze it won t cool you down and when the pollen count is high it could make hay fever worse. Verdict: False if the air outside is hotter than indoor. But at night opening the windows may give you some relief. 5) Drink 5) Drink beer beer In the 1958 film Ice Cold in Alex, Sir John Mills character looks forward to escaping the desert and drinking an ice-cold beer. When he eventually arrives, he sits at the bar and is served a glass of lager. Downing it, he famously says: Worth waiting for. You don t have to have battled through the North African desert to yearn for a beer at the end of a hot day. But will it help you cool down? Not exactly. If it is just one beer, it might not hurt you. In various studies, researchers have made people exercise until they re hot and then compared their recovery when they drank beer with or without alcohol. In one 1985 study of people exercising in a warm, humid environment, as you might expect, the peak urine output occurred after the beer which is not good. It shows the body is losing rather than retaining liquid. But compared with alcohol-free or low-alcohol beer the difference was surprising small. A more recent study had similar findings. Although isotonic sports drinks and plain water were more effective at hydrating, beer was still more hydrating than expected. And a Spanish study involving 40 minutes on a treadmill found that water and beer both rehydrated them to the same extent. No one knows exactly why when we know that drinking beer tends to make people go to the loo. One hypothesis is that because the body is dehydrated and needs the fluid it retains more of the beer than it would other fluids. These were all small studies, though, and they Beer can be just as hydrating as water - in small doses weren t looking specifically at body temperature, so we can t prove that beer cools you down. But they do show that one or maybe two small beers can still hydrate rather than dehydrate you. So perhaps that single beer in Ice Cold in Alex was worth the wait. Verdict: True at least when it s only one or two! WHAT IS THE FUTURE OF ENGLISH IN THE US? Ten years ago, I moved to Japan to teach English as a second language in a rural high school. The combination of being American and a native English speaker is one that affords huge economic privilege to swathes of the United States population. You see despite being a racially diverse country where over 350 languages are spoken the US, like many English-dominant countries, is filled with millions of people who grew up speaking English, and it s the only language they speak. Plus, recent waves of US nationalism, harsh immigration policies and English-only rhetoric give the impression that Americans are fine with, and even proud of, cashing in on the luxury of being native English speakers. But what s the future of English given how America is changing? How the country is becoming even more diverse? Monolingual America? The US has no official language yet English has always reigned supreme. Being a multicultural country of immigrants, the government has never implemented an official language at the federal level. Largely formed from a former British colony, it makes sense that the most common language is English. (It s worth noting, however, that Native American languages like Navajo were targeted to be stamped out earlier in the nation s history.) The diversification of an already diverse country is a genie that can t be put back into the bottle Yet after decades in a country where people have only ever needed English to get by as opposed to a place like Sweden for instance, where the national language is not English but English education starts early in primary school the demographics are rapidly changing. So great and so rapid are the shifts in the country s population, that, in the coming decade, the US is set to be transformed far more than other nations, the Brookings Institution s At a Massachusetts church, immigrant to the US sit in an English class William H Frey wrote for the BBC last year. He is referring to the fact that, in 2018, almost half of young people in the US are from ethnic minority groups. Generation Z loosely defined as those born after the year 2000 is set to be the most racially diverse generation in US history, a figure powered by immigration and biracial relationships. And in 2011, the US Census reported that the use of a language other than English at home increased by 148% between 1980 and These rapid changes could be part of what s fuelling anti-immigrant sentiment among many white voters in the US. But the diversification of an already diverse country is a genie that can t be put back into the bottle. And yet? Most Americans still only speak English. Many people are still raised in English-only speaking households, and studies show that by the third generation, many descendants of immigrant families lose their ability to speak their family s language of heritage. The US Census estimates that around 231 million Americans aged five years or older, or about 80% of the population, speak only English at home. In 2013, a YouGov survey found that 75% of Americans only speak English despite 43% of those surveyed stating that Americans should know as many languages as possible. Although, with this increasingly diverse youngest generation, this is starting to change: more people are growing up bilingual. Between 2000 and 2016, the percentage of children who speak another language at home increased from 18% to 22%. But when your country is huge, flanked by oceans and has long land borders, there s less immediate motivation, or even opportunity to use a second or third language We are encouraging heritage speakers to continue or learn their native language to become fully biliterate and bilingual, says Marty Abbott, executive director An Australian primary school teacher teaches story writing skills to three students studying English as a second language of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. That s a radical shift from the old days. She s referring to the late 1990s and early 2000s when more states had English-only movements that pushed to have English as the sole language for government matters. (Currently, around 30 states have such laws, which require all legal and governmental communications to be in English.) Today, groups like Abbott s are encouraging heritage speakers in families to continue using their native languages. But when your country is huge, flanked by oceans and has long land borders, there s less immediate motivation, or even opportunity to use a second or third language. Some multinational corporations, like Honda in Japan, for instance, are pushing to make English the official language of the company by So why should English speakers already working in the US even bother learning something else? The answer lies in the change taking place in the US jobs market. Being at least somewhat fluent in another language really does make you more marketable to employers and that even goes for native English speakers. Adverts for bilingual workers in the US doubled between 2010 and 2015 Last year, a report from New American Economy, a coalition of 500 mayors across the political spectrum in the US, found that adverts for bilingual workers in the US doubled between 2010 and Some companies have ramped up the search more than others a full third of job openings posted by Bank of America in 2015, for example, were for bilingual workers who could speak languages like Spanish, Mandarin and Arabic. The report noted that the fastest growth in bilingual listings were for high prestige jobs like financial managers, editors and industrial engineers. One can imagine a lot of opportunities for Americans that learn Mandarin, says David Lightfoot, professor of linguistics at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. The need for Americans to learn Chinese is, in some ways, quite powerful because there s so little English spoken in China. Still, despite the potential payoff, the numbers of Americans learning new languages is still low. A new study from the Pew Research Center published this week found that the US is way behind most European countries in terms of learning languages in school. It found that just 20% of American students are learning another language. The median for European students was 92%. Over the last century, the English language has been the currency of global trade and communications And if not purely to get you a job, there are other tangible pluses to learning an additional language. (A proverb that I love states: The more languages you speak, the more times you are a human. ) There are cognitive benefits too learning another language can boost skills like concentration. Bridging the Bridging empathy gap the empathy gap There is also another imperative to discourage monolingualism in the US the growing empathy gap. Experts point to a lack of certain life experiences as being responsible for generating a profound lack of understanding between groups. Abbott points to the experience of traveling to a non-english-speaking country, especially one that doesn t use a Roman alphabet. She says being a suddenly mute fish-out-ofwater is something that you just can t relate to unless you experience it. I think everyone needs to be patient with people. But some data suggests that Americans just aren t as interested or able to put themselves in this sort of situation. Americans don t travel abroad quite as much as some other native English speakers. Just over 40% of Americans own passports compare to 57% of Australians, for example. (That American number is on the rise, though.) After all, other countries are farther away and it s more expensive for Americans to travel internationally than, say, Brits, who can hop to Europe in under an hour. The real solution might lie at home, however. The main way to address monolingualism is to simply start teaching foreign languages earlier in school. Being a suddenly mute fish-out-of-water is something that you just can t relate to unless you experience it Expose them to languages at a time where they can soak it up not when they re 12 years old, and certainly not when they re 30 years old, says Lightfoot. But if people don t want to learn another language, well, they won t learn another language. Motivation is a complicated issue, says Lightfoot. I lived in Montreal for several years in the 70s, and there, it s very easy to learn French all you have to do is switch the television channel and watch the hockey game. But he mentions that wasn t always the case. It wasn t until 1976 when a new separatist government came in and shifted the focus to learning and using French. Resistance to learning French in Montreal was enormous, and that goes to the political history, says Lightfoot. While the US might have a reputation for being monolingual, like many English-centred nations and the dominance of English isn t likely to be challenged anytime soon the data and trends suggest possible changes in Americans linguistic habits. For us native English speakers, it s easy to fall back on the skills we already have. But the bigger rewards might come from using the ones we don t.

Because it is easy, relatively secure, and easily accessible. There is also a Deposit Protection Scheme in place which covers the amount in your bank account up to 100,000 or 75,000. So far, so good? The Deposit Protection amount has been reduced from 85,000 which was the previous compensation limit. This means that if a bank or building society cannot meet its obligations and subsequently fails, or becomes insolvent, the maximum compensation you will receive will be 75,000 or 150,000 for a joint account (husband and wife). What about growth on your savings? R eturns are not good, interest rates are hardly inflationbeating and your hard-earned cash is not really being put to work for you. In fact, the average savings account is paying less than 1% per year and some have even reduced to 0.2% or even 0.1%! What is the alternative? - A Spanish Tax Compliant Bond So how does this look in reality? Consider this: 20,000 in an average savings account with a gross interest rate of 1% will pay: 20,000 at 1% pa, equalling 200 each year before tax.
