This volatility prompted GBP/EUR to fall as low as 1.11 last month, before ultimately closing close to where it began at Meanwhile, the GBP/USD exchange rate fell from a high of $1.32 to twomonth low of $1.26 before climbing back above $1.30 by start of November. The pound faced significant hardships in October, with a drop in Sterling sentiment following the UK s failure to secure a Brexit agreement dragging GBP exchange rates to multi-month lows. However, the UK currency staged a major comeback at the start of November, with suggestions that a Brexit deal could be in place by the end of the month bolstering the currency. A sense of political uncertainty also weighed on the euro through much of October, with both Brexit and concerns over Italy s growing budget row with the EU limiting EUR gains. The US dollar, meanwhile, remained the darling of currency markets last month as its role as a safe-haven currency and a run of solid domestic data saw investors continue to flock to USD, before the currency started to weaken in November following the US mid-terms. 38 38 The CBPG Magazine 16th November - 13th December 2018 Issue 25 Spanish Property Guides CYCLOGICAL November 18 COSTA BLANCA BENIDORM by Gary and Lynn from Cyclogical in Quesada WCT MARCHA 2018 It was a very cold 15 degrees on Saturday 27th October when we met and left the shop at on our way to the Terra Natura Theme park in Benidorm for the 1st Benidorm WCT Marcha. We arrived and parked in the Terra Natura car park and went in to the Hotel reception for registration. After collecting our numbers, goody bag etc we looked for a café / restaurant but found that there weren t any - only the Hotel dining room - so we took our chances and went in for a coffee. We were the lucky ones as we just managed a quick coffee and cake before loads of other people tried their luck but were asked to leave as they were not guests! Back to the cars, bikes prepped and onto the start line for a 7.30am start. We had 9 riders taking part in this Sportif and it was the first one that I had to drop out of due to my hip problems, being unable to stand on the cranks when climbing. It was 153km with 3,600metres of climbing so with deep regret I decided to let the guys get on with it and I just acted as support (it was just as well I did!). At 7.30am they were off, heading for Benidorm town and a 10km loop of the town before passing the hotel again towards Finestrat for the first climb of the day (4km at an average 5%). It had just started to rain. After Finestrat the race up The Tudons - 12kms at an average of 12% (featured in many La Vueltas). I had just settled in to a comfy seat with a coffee when my phone rang - it was Harry. He was sitting in the back of an ambulance with Hypothermia as it was now 7degrees with a chill factor of about Zero degrees - and torrential rain. He said the ambulance driver could not take him as he had so many people to look after and could I go and get him. So off I went in Thunderbird One to the rescue. As I drove to Finestrat I started to pass cyclists with race numbers heading back towards the hotel, a few at first, then a few more, then groups of them. I must have passed over 200 riders, including some professionals, all heading back and looking frozen. It was chucking it down by now and many riders had taken refuge in local bars and restaurants - including Graham and Richard - as I recognised their bikes when I passed. It took me over an hour and a half to reach Harry who was over 60km into the race and had already completed The Tudons and was now in a water stop with Daniel who also had to retire. I gave them a blanket each to wrap up in and keep warm. We had just left the water stop when Moth, who was with the lead group, phoned to say he had a double puncture and was now out, so off we went to rescue him. After another 50km we collected him and the 4 of us went for a coffee in a local village to warm everyone up. The rain had stopped by now but there were not many riders left. After coffee we headed to Col de Rates which we by passed so we could get in front and be back at the hotel before the finish. At the finish line riders started to arrive in ones and twos - no big groups and very few sprinting. Everyone just wanted to get finished and changed into warm clothes. Out of our 9 starters only Alan Quearns, Dom TJ, Paul Cameron and Steve Buckley made it and received their welldeserved medals. Steve Buckley s better half, Julie Hipkiss, started cycling with Lynn on Hybrid bikes 3 years ago and last year decided to make the change to a road bike where she has gone from strength to strength. She is out cycling on her road bike most days and has become a very strong rider, successfully completing 3 major Sportifs. Not only did she start the Benidorm one, she braved the treacherous weather conditions and continued where others had failed and was proudly presented with her finisher s medal. Well done Julie! We all take our hats off to you. Out of the 460 starters only 175 managed to finish. In hindsight the organisers should have cancelled the event as 800 riders had already pulled out the week before when they announced that it was no longer going to be closed roads - this included the 3 invited professional riders. By A full stop on an oldfashioned typewriter was a large black blob as wide as a letter. When computers arrived they brought in typefaces with proportional spacing and the full stop diminished to a small dot. For me, as a former typewriter user, the effect was to make the full stop matter less. The most crucial part of the sentence became a mere speck: easy to insert unthinkingly, easy to miss out altogether. Then along came another threat - texting and chatting online. The dialogic visual language of texting speech bubbles, pinging left and right on your phone, has little use for full stops. A single-line text needs no punctuation to show that it has ended. In lieu of a full stop, we press send. The end of a text is now more commonly marked by a kiss, or an emoji, than a full stop. Studies have even shown that people tend to read a text that ends with a full stop as curt or passiveaggressive. We live in a digital age that likes to pretend that writing is speech. We tap out s, texts and update our social media profiles in the places busy commuter trains, cafes and streets where we also talk. We write as if we were talking. This kind of digital writing is often done quickly in the hope of Joe Moran, Professor of English at Liverpool John Moores University How mastering this will make your writing compelling and authoritative an instant response. It is a slightly interrupted way of having a conversation. A good sentence moves smoothly and cleanly towards a stop. The best way to ensure this happens is to put the important stuff at the end But writing is not really conversation. One of the purposes of writing effectively is to store and spread information in a form that does not require anyone else s bodily presence while it is being written. A piece of writing is its own small island of sense, from which the writer has been airlifted and on which no one else need live. So with any kind of formal or semi-formal writing we craft at work even an the full stop and where we put it are crucial. A sentence should assume Research in to text message communication revealed some thought any punctuation in texts conveyed abruptness the reader s existence but cannot, like a text speech bubble, keep demanding a response. With a full stop, your sentence becomes self-supporting. The full stop offers the reader relief, allowing them to close the circle of meaning and take a mental breath. A sentence ordered like this feels more deliberate and more memorable just as, when you stop speaking, what sticks in your listener s mind is the last thing you said. A sentence s strongest stress falls on its last stressed syllable, just before the full stop. A sentence has a special snap if its last syllable is stressed: I binned that brainless book. A sentence with a strong end-stress says that its writer cared how its words fell on the reader s ear. If you want to write well, learn to love the full stop. See it as the goal towards which the words in your sentence adamantly move. The full stop is a satisfying little click that moves your writing along so the next sentence can pick up where it left off. How a daily 10-minute exercise could boost your happiness By David Robson, Senior Jouranilst, BBC Future With just six simple steps, this programme could enhance your well-being in less time than it takes to drink a cup of coffee. Even if you have not been diagnosed with a mental illness, day-to-day stresses can easily drain your life of fulfilment and contentment. There is no shortage of evidencebased strategies that can help to pull you out of that rut the scientific field of so-called positive psychology is now 20 years old and has provided countless techniques to boost your mood. But how do we find the time to apply them in our daily lives? Sandi Mann, a lecturer at the University of Central Lancashire, offers one solution. Building on her experience as a clinical psychologist, she has some suggestions that might help. When we feel low, it can be easy to overlook the things that are going right and keeping this journal brings them to the forefront of your attention. Mann stresses that the benefits do not just come from the immediate lift as you write the entries; rereading your previous entries can help you cope with difficult situations in the future too. Thanks to our associative memory, a dark mood caused by one bad event may lead you to preferentially remember other sources of stress and unhappiness. Whenever that happens, leafing through the pages of your journal may help you to break out of that ruminative spiral. The sixth point builds on recent research into the power of kindness. Various studies have found that selfless acts not only increase the wellbeing of those around you, they consistently boost your own mood too. Spending a bit of money to help a stranger, for instance, makes you far happier than using the same cash to treat yourself, a finding that has been replicated in more than 130 countries. Focusing on those occasions should ensure you make the most of those warm feelings while also encouraging you to look for new opportunities the next day. A 10-minute review of your day can t work miracles, of course and Mann stresses that anyone who suspects they may suffer from depression should still see their GP for professional

If you find Mann s approach interesting, you may also enjoy her counterintuitive research on boredom. In a series of experiments, she has found that short periods of tedium In the 1860s, in the farming community of Eastwood, 10 miles or so north of Sydney, an unusual apple tree could be seen growing along the banks of a creek. Its fruit was notable for its large size, light-green skin and suitability for both cooking and eating raw. The tree grew so abundant that its branches were later claimed to have been propped up to stop them breaking. How it originated is not known for certain. But according to legend, the tree grew from the discarded core of a crab apple thrown out of the kitchen window by a farmer s wife - one Maria Ann Smith. This legend is born out, to some degree, by science. An entirely new variety of can bring great benefits. Students asked to copy out the phone book, for instance, tended to come up with more creative solutions to common brain teasers at a later point, compared with those who were spared the tedium. Mann suspects that the boring activity encourages the students minds to wander and apple, such as Granny Smith, could only grow from crosspollinated seeds within an apple, said Amanda Karlstrom, of UK horticultural research firm NIAB EMR. The parentage of the Granny Smith is thought to be possibly a cross between a cultivated apple and malus sylvestris, a crab apple. Therefore, Granny Smith is most likely a chance hybrid of two existing varieties and/ or species, Ms Karlstrom explained. The clever bit that Ms Smith did was to identify the potential of her young plant, nurture the seedling and propagate it for wider apple production. By About 90,000 people are expected to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Granny Smith apple in Australia this weekend. But who was the English emigrant who gave her name to the famous fruit? Granny Smiths are now grown across the world Tanya Gupta, BBC News Could the real Granny Smith have brought this knowledge with her to Australia from the other side of the world? In 1838, the Lady Nugent had sailed into Sydney with nearly 50 emigrant families on board including the Smith family - Maria with her husband Thomas and their five surviving children. Back in England, the Smiths had lived in the village of Beckley, in Sussex, surrounded by the orchards of the Weald. It seems likely Maria had spent her life in in England on fruit farms, according to Prof Brian Short, of Sussex University. We definitely know Maria was from an area which had some specialism in apples, he said. And it s not a million miles away from Kent, which is apple country. Records suggest Cherry Gardens, a farm in the area specialising in hops and pears, may have been tenanted by her father-inlaw. However, conditions were tough in England in the 1820 and 30s and it appears the Smiths fell on hard times. The end of the Napoleonic Wars had led to a labour surplus and depressed wages for farm labourers. At the same time, increased mechanisation had reduced demand for agricultural labour. Poor, hungry and increasingly angry, rural families took action in the summer of 1830 as the Swing Riots broke out in neighbouring Kent and soon spread to Sussex. It was one of the most pauperised parishes in the county, according to the guardians of the Rye Poor Law Union. We are in the greatest possible distress for want of labour at the Rye union board, wrote parish official Samuel Selmes. Yesterday we had upwards of 80 labourers out of employ and our houses [workhouses] are quite full. The solution, officials decided, was to send people abroad. By November the parish had paid for about 200 people to be taken to Australia to begin new lives. Maria, Thomas and their five children were among them. A letter written decades later by Granny Smith s grandson, Benjamin Spurway, describes how the family found employment in Australia before taking on land for themselves and establishing an orchard. The letter has only recently come to light after lying undiscovered for decades. The land was heavily-timbered, he wrote. Much hard work, determination and courage were needed before the land was cleared, ploughed and cultivated and ready to make a fruit orchard, which they decided upon. The day came when their ambitions were realised and a beautiful orchard took the place of wilderness. Oranges and all kinds of fruit of that period were grown on the rich soil. Spurway goes on to tell how Thomas Smith took on a market stall to sell the fruit but came back penniless after he stopped at the pub. At that point, Maria took over the stall. It was at the market another fruit producer gave her a batch of crab apples to test their cooking qualities. According to her grandson, she made two pies, dropped the peelings and cores out of the window, and the first Granny Smith seedling grew. The family records the first Granny Smith apple was produced in 1868, two years before she died. Later, the apple grew in popularity and went on to become one of Australia s major food exports. Today it is grown around the world. Up to 90,000 people gather to celebrate Granny Smith each year in Australia In Eastwood, which long ago became a suburb of Sydney, the bountiful fruit that made the area prosperous is still remembered. A Granny Smith festival has been held each year since 1985 and is attended by tens of thousands of people. However, the Smith family did not become rich. Fruit can t be patented, and I often think how rich we could have been if it had have been different, said Sue Butler, who is Maria s great-great-great-greatgreat granddaughter. Do you know what those are called? the safari guide at Botswana s Chobe Game Lodge queried while I watched a large group of hippos unabashedly bathing in the waters of the Chobe River. A bloat of hippos! he answered rhetorically with the grin of a man who knew this tidbit of information would delight his guests. My smile matched his as I laughed at how apropos the word seemed at describing this mass of bulky beasts. A bloat of hippos was a witty and whimsical linguistic contrast to the almost Orwellian nest of vipers and murder of crows that I had always attributed to poetic license. But along came a tower of giraffes, a confusion of wildebeests and, reposed contentedly under the blazing sub-saharan sun, a bask of crocodiles. These collective nouns begged for further wordplay. The opportunity arose when we stopped to observe a business of mongoose. As I watched their valiant amorous activities, the temptation was ineluctable. Look, they re doing the business! I exclaimed to Writer Kerry Medina s interest in the origin of collective animal nouns was piqued while on safari in Botswana my travel companions, a couple celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary. Deference be damned. Fits of puerile laughter, comparable only to schoolchildren discussing flatulence, ensued. The safari proved a singular travel experience that stayed with me long after I returned home. Of course, the obligatory wildlife photos were shared with friends and family, inclusive of clever captions decrying their relevant animal groupings. But I still wanted to know if these collective nouns were simply a gimmick employed by safari guides to engage their guests, or if they had actual roots A bloat of hippos seems an apt way to describe the bulky beasts in the English language. As it turns out, these scintillating nouns are neither coincidence nor misnomer, but rather the result of centuries of linguistic evolution. People have been coming up with terms to describe animal groupings for hundreds of years, but it wasn t until The Book of St Albans, written by Juliana Berners, a 15th- Century Benedictine prioress from England, that they were recorded extensively. Also known by the title The Book of Hawking, Hunting and Blasing of Arms, Berners 1486 publication of this gentlemen s catalogue of wildlife and hunting included 165 collective nouns for animal species, and is said to make her one of the earliest female authors writing in the English language. Yet, the only documented evidence By Larry Bleiberg of this woman s existence is the attribution Explicit Dam Julyans Barnes in her boke of huntyng, which appeared in the original edition. Allison Treese, a masters student at the University of Arkansas and author of the theses A Flourynge Aege: Tracing the Sacred and Secular in The Book of St Albans, believes Berners was likely of noble birth. She explained that because Berners received attribution in a published work an uncommon feat for most authors during the Middle Ages, let alone a woman and because of her intimate familiarity with the subject matter, she likely came from a highly influential family. Treese also posits that Berners was affiliated with Sopwell Priory in Hertfordshire, north of London, where she is thought to have served as a prioress, as it already had a precedent for taking in wealthy widows as nuns or boarders. The monks of St Albans Abbey, of which Sopwell Priory was a cell, may have also held sway over some of Berners writing, as it was common for English monks to fly falcons and hunt after taking their vows, and men of the church were also responsible for much of the era s hunting literature. Hunting at the time was a necessity for food, but the noble sport of the chase was restricted to the upper class. And although women didn t participate in hunting culture as often as men, hunting knowledge would have been accessible to them, Treese said. According to Treese, very little of Berners animal glossary is original. She called it, mostly translations and adaptions of other works, which is an older literary tradition. In her book What Made the Crocodile Cry? Susie Dent asks who decides on the right collective noun for something. The answer, she states, is no-one. English evolves with its own momentum, she writes. Collective nouns are no exception to the rule: many have been with us for centuries, while new versions of the old are emerging all the time, as well as completely new ones when a need arises. Treese does, however, concede that if anything can be deduced about Berners from her work, it s that the woman had a sense of humour. In addition to a number of common animal terms that are still in use, like a swarm of bees and a gaggle of geese, The Book of St Albans also includes groupings for people. A disguising of tailors, a doctrine of doctors and a neverthriving of jugglers likely served as the day s commentary on such professions. Since the entire list fell under the heading of Beasts and Fowls, it had to have been Berners tongue-in-cheek means of putting people in the same category, Treese noted. Many of the groupings are so satirical that she must have had a playful, humorous attitude about this area of the work. The true origin of many of the collective animal nouns that appear in Berners compilation has been lost to time, and since the publication of The Book of St Albans, the terms have continued to evolve. A shrewdness In the 15th Century, English prioress Juliana Berners published a glossary of collective animal nouns in The Book of St Albans of apes and a pride of lions both of which appear in The Book of St Albans are part of the vernacular in most Anglophone countries. New terms have since developed, too, still with the intent to illustrate a characteristic of the animal. After returning from a morning safari, while I was finishing lunch on the veranda of Chobe Game Lodge, I watched a troop of baboons flee from the kitchen with stolen containers of freshly made shortbread. Despite their armfuls of sweet loot, the animals moved with the synchrony of a dance troupe, their long limbs quickly and gracefully scaling the rafters of the veranda. Their young followed suit like skilled understudies. Atop the roof, the lesson in biscuit theft was rewarded. The baboons sat nonchalantly, taking in the views of the Chobe and greedily shovelling the not-so-hard-won booty into their mouths. They didn t so much as pause to show deference to the chorus of kitchen staff angrily shaking pots and pans at them from the ground below. It seems a hastiness of cooks is no match for a troop of baboons!

Last year a video of Turkish chef Nusret Gökçe lovingly seasoning a massive steak with a pinch of salt amassed millions of views online and earned him the nickname salt bae. But it wasn t just his attention to detail that captured attention. But it wasn t just his attention to detail that captured attention. We re obsessed with salt despite warnings we re consuming too much of it and harming our health in the process. But a counterargument is gaining ground, casting doubt on decades of research and shedding light on the questions that still remain unanswered about our favourite seasoning. Sodium, the key element found in salt, is essential for our bodies to maintain its overall fluid balance, transport oxygen and nutrients, and allow our nerves to pulse with electricity. But most populations have historically eaten more salt than advised, and health officials around the world have had their work cut out for them convincing us to cut down. Guidelines At 2.7g per 100g of cheese, blue cheese has more salt than seawater recommend adults have no more than 6g of salt per day. In the UK we consume closer to 8g; in the US, 8.5g. But only a quarter of our daily intake comes from salt we add into food ourselves the rest is hidden in the food we buy, including bread, sauces, soups and some cereals. Adding to the One cup of miso soup contains 2.7g of salt confusion is that on food labels, manufacturers often refer to sodium content rather than salt, which can make us think we re consuming less salt than we are. One meta-analysis found a 17% greater risk of cardiovascular disease from consuming an extra 5g of salt per day Research has found that too much salt causes high blood pressure, which can lead to strokes and heart disease, and experts broadly agree that the evidence against salt is compelling. Our bodies retain water when we eat salt, increasing blood pressure until our kidneys flush it out. Too much salt over a long period of time can put strain on our arteries and lead to prolonged high blood pressure, known as hypertension, which causes 62% of all strokes and 49% of coronary heart disease events, according to the World Health Organization. One meta-analysis of 13 studies published over 35 years found a 17% greater risk of total cardiovascular disease and a 23% greater risk of stroke from consuming an extra 5g of salt per day. As you might expect, cutting salt intake can have the reverse effect. In one eightyear data analysis of blood pressure, other cardiovascular disease risk factors and mean salt intake, researchers found that a decline in salt intake by 1.4g per day was likely to have contributed to a fall in blood pressure which in turn contributed to the 42% decline in fatal strokes and 40% drop in heart disease-related deaths. But in a common theme in observational studies such as this one, the researchers also concluded that it was difficult to entirely separate the effects of less salt from other diet and lifestyle behaviours. Those who are more conscious of their salt intake are more likely to eat healthier overall, exercise more and smoke and drink less. Randomised trials showing salt s effect on the body are almost impossible to carry out. But there are also no randomised trial for obesity, or smoking, which we know kills you Francesco Cappuccio Long-term, randomised trials comparing people who eat a lot versus a little salt could establish cause and effect. But very few such studies exist because of the funding requirements and ethical implications. Randomised trials showing salt s effect on the body are almost impossible to carry out, says Francesco Cappuccio, professor of cardiovascular medicine and epidemiology at the University of Warwick s medical school and author of the eight-year review. But there are also no randomised trial for obesity, or smoking, which we know kills you. Meanwhile, observational evidence is in abundance. After the Japanese government launched a campaign to persuade people to reduce their salt intake in the late 1960s, intake decreased from 13.5g to 12g per day. Over the same period there were falls in blood pressure and an 80% reduction in stroke mortality. Different strokes But an additional complicating factor is that the effects of salt consumption on blood pressure and heart health differ from one individual to another. Studies have found that our sensitivity to salt varies from person to person depending on factors as varied as ethnicity, age, body mass index, health and family history of hypertension. Some studies have found that those with higher salt sensitivity are more at risk of salt-associated high blood pressure. In fact, some scientists are now arguing that a Deli meats like turkey, ham and roast beef have around 1.5g of salt per serving; two slices of whole wheat bread can contribute another.6g low-salt diet is just as much of a risk factor for developing high blood pressure as high salt consumption. In other words, there is a J- or U-shaped curve with a threshold at the bottom where risks starts to go back up. The researchers argued that consuming either less than 5.6g or more than 12.5g a day is associated with negative health outcomes. A different study involving more than 170,000 people had similar findings: a link between low salt intake, defined as less than 7.5g, and increased risk of cardiovascular events and death in people both with and without hypertension, compared to a moderate intake of up to 12.5g per day (between 1.5 to 2.5 teaspoons of salt). That moderate intake is up to double the UK Though it tastes more sweet than salty, even a single cupcake has about 1g of salt recommended daily intake. The study s lead author, Andrew Mente, a nutritional epidemiologist at McMaster University in Ontario, concluded that reducing salt intake from high to moderate reduces the risk of high blood pressure, but there are no health benefits beyond that. And increasing salt intake from low to moderate might help too. He says the wave of studies in recent years concluding contrary findings are small, include participants who are already unwell, and rely on flawed data including Mente s study, which used a fasting spot urine test on participants instead of the gold standard of spreading several tests over a 24- hour period. Some, including Stanner, say that a diet rich in potassium, found in fruit, vegetables, nuts and dairy, can help to offset salt s adverse effects on blood pressure. Ceu Mateus, senior lecturer in Health Economics at Lancaster University, advises that we should prioritise being aware of hidden salt in our diets rather than trying to avoid it altogether. The problems we have with too much salt could be similar to those linked with too little, but we still need to do more research to understand what goes on here. In the meantime, a healthy person is going to be able to regulate small amounts, Mateus says. We should be aware that too much salt is really bad, but don t eliminate it completely from your diet. Despite recent studies arguing the potential dangers of a low salt diet, and individual differences in salt sensitivity, the most established takeaway from existing research is that too much salt definitely increases blood pressure. They hunted a range of bizarre animals, from tiny hippos to giant sloths, and gathered what they could find. Think of the recent Aardman film Early Man, but with less football. Diehard enthusiasts across the globe have been taking up barefoot running, swapping mattresses for cold, hard earth, not eating for days at a time, going to the toilet in a squatting position, and even donating blood regularly to simulate being wounded, to name but a few. It seems that long work hours, high stress levels, massive, open plan buildings and sitting at our desks all day aren t very good for our health who would have thought it? And all of these things can be bad for productivity, too. This isn t about holding meetings in caves. It s about small changes that will make the time we spend at work more compatible with human biology Enter the paleo office, a concept which could make our workplaces more efficient. This isn t about growing your beard out or holding meetings in caves. It s about small changes that will make the time we spend at work more compatible with human biology. For example, taking walking meetings, investing in standing desks, and taking regular breaks to de-stress. Proponents argue that while technology and culture are evolving at astonishing speed, our bodies are not. They say that humans today are essentially huntergatherers, displaced in a world of massive global businesses and long hours. It s a controversial idea, but regardless of your views, anything that makes office life easier to bear is difficult to argue with. Apple s new headquarters in California will eventually house 12,000 employees, while Google s giant new office in London will be capable of housing 7,000 people. There may be downsides to this. The thing is, the magic number of people we can know known as Dunbar s number is hardwired in our biology. It s limited by the size of our brains, and first emerged around 250,000 years ago, when we were living in tribal groups. Even today, 150 is the average size of military companies and academic circles. According to Robin Dunbar, an evolutionary psychologist at the University of Oxford who co-authored the study that coined the idea, our social limits are still relevant in the corporate world today. If you want to run your organisation as an egalitarian, democratic institution, this is about the limit, he says. It means you don t need a hierarchy because everyone works on the basis of personal relationships and personal obligation. If everyone has met and has some kind of personal relationship, it might be easier to cooperate with colleagues and your boss is unlikely to be intimidating or aggressive. Already, there is some anecdotal evidence that this is the case. As of last year, Gore-Tex, which makes waterproof and breathable fabric, has appeared on Fortune magazine s 100 Best Companies to Work For list 20 times. It prides itself on not having a rigid hierarchy; instead it has a latticework approach to management, which treats its employees more like a structure of interwoven talents. How has it achieved this harmony? As Malcolm Gladwell explains in his book The Tipping Point, the company adheres to what he called the rule of 150. The story goes that in the company s early days, its co-founder The paleo movement blends our lifestyles and environment to suit our biology, so adopting Dunbar s number in the office might be a good place to start Bill Gore noticed that when a factory reached 150 employees, it started to become less efficient and productive. From then on, he limited all his factories to this number of people; instead of expanding them, he just kept building more new factories next door, creating a community of staff that were willing to work hard and help each other out. Dunbar explains that once organisations expand beyond 200 people, communication really breaks down. Firms begin to need a top-down management structure because faceto-face communication stops and a silo effect can kick in, for instance, when different parts of a company end up working on the same project, but no one notices, duplicating work and wasting resources. This is something Patty McCord, the former chief talent officer at Netflix and the author of Powerful: Building a Culture of Freedom and Responsibility, is familiar with. Often when I work with start-ups I say that you have to change the way you communicate when you can no longer do it standing up on a chair. And that s about 150 people if you ve got a room that s big enough, she says. This is partly for entirely practical reasons To speak with people you have to go to another country, another building, another floor, says McCord but there are other factors. In smaller organisations where everyone has some kind of personal relationship, people are more likely to be helpful and less likely to shirk their obligations. They also tend to have a better understanding of what the business is about, since they re likely to have bonded with colleagues in several departments beyond their own home team. If the paleo movement is all about moulding our lifestyles and environment to suit our biology, adhering to Dunbar s number in the office might be a good place to start. It makes sense that organisations based on personal relationships would be more efficient, while navigating politics and collaborating would be a lot easier if you at least knew everyone s name and role. The more people understand the [whole] business, the more they understand the customers they re serving, then they can be much more aligned and make better independent decisions, McCord explains. But there are other ways of aligning our future workplaces with our paleo past. One is to bring some nature into the office. It s thought that our prehistoric ancestors spent a large portion of their day outdoors. In contrast, the average American spends 47 hours every week confined in offices. Recently researchers at the London School of Economics estimated that the psychological trauma of this daily slog costs the US economy about $250 billion every year. In 2013, an EUfunded project estimated that work-related depression costs Europe 617 billion annually. One 2014 study found that employees were 15% more productive when their fashionable, minimalist offices were filled in with houseplants. Facebook last year announced plans for a new building in Menlo Park, California, which boasts a garden roof the size of nearly seven American football pitches. The new $5 billion Apple HQ, Apple Park, is even more extravagant, with around nine thousand newly planted trees. One of the nice things is you get an extra oxytocin bump if you re having a rough day, says Phil Nottingham, a strategist who works for the online video hosting company Wistia, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Those who viewed the pet-containing office said they d be happier and more sociable, though they also saw their imaginary workplace as less professional, clean and safe. Meanwhile, a study from 2012 found that employees who were allowed to take their dogs to work started the day just as stressed as everyone else but as the day progressed, they became significantly less so than those who weren t allowed their pooches. Get GET up, UP, STAND stand UP up The final flourish in any self-respecting paleo office is to encourage movement at all costs. It s now well known that a sedentary office life can sap workers of energy and increase their risk of death. Enter so-called low fat buildings, which encourage physical activity with sneaky design, such as centrepiece staircases and hiding the lifts. Just a few years ago, standing desks were the preserve of mavericks in Silicon Valley, but today these too are entering the mainstream. In Scandinavia, 90% of office workers have access to one, while in Denmark, it s a legal requirement for companies to provide them. Walking meetings are also on the rise, with fans such as Facebook s Mark Zuckerberg and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey. It might have taken millennia to invent the open-plan office, minimalist décor and desks, but with a bit of luck, we ll be back to the Stone Ages soon. Just don t swap your suit for a loincloth just yet.

Because it is easy, relatively secure, and easily accessible. There is also a Deposit Protection Scheme in place which covers the amount in your bank account up to 100,000 or 75,000. So far, so good? The Deposit Protection amount has been reduced from 85,000 which was the previous compensation limit. This means that if a bank or building society cannot meet its obligations and subsequently fails, or becomes insolvent, the maximum compensation you will receive will be 75,000 or 150,000 for a joint account (husband and wife). What about growth on your savings? R eturns are not good, interest rates are hardly inflationbeating and your hard-earned cash is not really being put to work for you. In fact, the average savings account is paying less than 1% per year and some have even reduced to 0.2% or even 0.1%! What is the alternative? - A Spanish Tax Compliant Bond So how does this look in reality? Consider this: 20,000 in an average savings account with a gross interest rate of 1% will pay: 20,000 at 1% pa, equalling 200 each year before tax. S etting up a Spanish tax compliant bond is no more difficult than setting up a bank account, and, once you have invested, you have easy access to your money: regular, or one-off withdrawals, to suit your needs % The returns over the last few years have been: % % % % The growth on a Spanish Tax Compliant Bond is free of tax until a withdrawal is made -even then only the growth is subject to tax. Any tax due is paid directly to the Hacienda and no Modelo 720 declaration is required for holders of this kind of Bond.
