2 2 The Latest News 20th July - 16th August 2017 Issue 9 The Costa Blanca Property & Business Guide PROPERTY CHOICE SPAIN Having been trading in the El Raso area for nearly 15 years, partners Ian Bembridge and Danny Patterson have come through some pretty difficult times (we do all remember 2008, don t we!) still smiling, and confident about the future of their business (ably supported by Secretary/Administrator Jasmine Strange, pictured) in this very popular area in the Costa Blanca. Ian, Danny and Jasmine pride themselves most of all on the quality of their service. This, when coupled with their No pressure sales style, seems to been a great recipe for ensuring their clients are all happy (see some examples below of Testimonials received). They are adamant that their firm s service does not stop when the keys are handed over at the Notary and, as a result of just being there for their customers if anything awkward turns up (Ian and Danny encourage clients to call Property Choice first if anything goes wrong). Of course, over time, this has led to some very nice referral business. The only complaint from the team is that they need MORE properties to sell, so if anyone reading this article is thinking of selling, or maybe knows someone who is, please let Property Choice know! The team loves the area Jasmine - Secretary - Administrator around El Raso, central, but peaceful, and not far from the major centres, airport and lots of lovely beaches. Things really started to get a bit emotional - the end of an era for us - I am sure we will miss our House in EL RASO and all the people we have come to know over the past 12 years. Latest currency news June s UK general election left pound exchange rates struggling, and the British currency extended losses against the euro as July progressed. Over the past four weeks the GBP/EUR exchange rate has fallen from highs of to lows of , with the pairing approaching the midpoint of July trading in the region of The euro, meanwhile, has jumped from to a high of against the pound and surged to a new best rate of $ against the US dollar. What s been happening? Political uncertainty was the main driver of currency movement in June, but over the last few weeks the Bank of England (BoE) has taken the spotlight. Conflicting commentary from various BoE officials has alternately raised and lowered BoE interest rate hike expectations, inspiring pound movement in the process. While Andy Haldane (the central bank s chief economist) lent the pound support by changing his usual stance and indicating that he s on the verge of voting for higher borrowing costs, Deputy Governor Ben Broadbent sent Sterling tumbling by asserting that interest rates should be left where they are for now. Mixed UK data didn t exactly help the pound either, with a surprising drop in the UK unemployment rate to a 42-year low of 4.5% being countered by the news that average earnings are still running well below the current rate of inflation. The euro has also been fluctuating in the face of central bank uncertainty, but to a much lesser extent than the pound, and the common currency has been deriving support from a recent bout of weakness in the US dollar. What do you need to look out for? The August BoE interest rate decision is looming, and the vote will be extremely interesting in light of recent remarks. For the pound to climb against the euro, the vote on whether borrowing costs should be increased needs to be split and the minutes need to indicate that the central bank is moving closer to tightening stimulus. If hopes for a near-term rate hike are dashed we can expect Sterling to tumble. That being said, the EUR/ GBP gains may be limited if the European Central Bank (ECB) equally hints that it s willing to leave policy where it is for the foreseeable future. With Brexit negotiations now well underway, any developments in the discussions are liable to inspire pound volatility. OWEN PATERSON: SPITEFUL PROTECTIONISM BY BRUSSELS HELPS NO ONE AND GERMANS ARE REALISING THIS This evening, I will be discussing Brexit at a conference in Hamburg. It is an ideal place to make the case, as from the days of the Hanseatic League to its zenith as the secondlargest port in Europe after London in the 19th century Hamburg has always been an outwardlooking, independentminded city, built upon free trade. This outlook, and the emphasis on reciprocal free trade, are precisely what Brexit is about. My principal message is simple: Brexit is going to happen. Those still in denial must take note and understand the reality of the situation. More people voted to leave the EU than have ever voted for any issue or political party. Article 50 was triggered on 29th March, after 494 MPs voted for it in the House of Commons. The automatic legal effect of this is that at midnight on 29th March 2019, the EU treaties in their entirety will cease to apply to the UK, with no post-exit obligations on the UK. Since then, we have had a General Election in which 85 per cent of the votes cast were for parties advocating leaving the Single Market, the Customs Union and the remit of the European Court of Justice. Caption: Owen Paterson MP 18th July 2017 This is the Government s position, and it has not changed. Not a single Conservative MP voted against the Queen s Speech. Two weeks ago, the UK triggered our withdrawal from the 1964 London Fisheries Convention, signalling our determination to take back control of our waters and, as if that were not confirmation enough, the European Union (Withdrawal) Bill was published last Thursday, which will repeal the European Communities Act 1972 and convert into UK law the entire Acquis Communautaire. Nevertheless, there are still those who seek to use open-ended t r a n s i t i o n a l arrangements to delay and frustrate our exit, but they should take note of the European Commission s guidelines on such arrangements. They must be bridges towards the foreseeable framework, clearly defined, and limited in time. These requirements explicitly rule out openended stalling tactics. The sentiments behind Brexit taking back control of our laws, our money and our borders are not negative ones. They are not anti- Europe. They are positive statements of the age-old notion that a sovereign country will be more successful when it governs its own affairs. Leaving the Single Market and the Customs Union are prerequisites for expanding our trade around the world and there is no doubt that such expansion is necessary. In 1999, 61 per cent of UK trade was with the EU, now it is 43%. By 2025, it has been projected that our exports to the EU will account for under 35 per cent. There is, nonetheless, a clear incentive to continue our trade with the rest of Europe and it would be foolish for the EU to think that punishing the UK would be in its best interests. Allister Heath has written in this newspaper about the appalling damage which a tariff war could do to the German car industry, with production predicted to fall by almost 1 million units, close to its nadir during the financial crisis in Last year, 950,000 newly-registered cars in the UK were German. In the first year after the UK leaves, it has been predicted that the imposition of tariffs would see German car exports to the UK collapse by a third, with 18,000 jobs in the German car industry put at direct risk. S p i t e f u l protectionism by the Commission is in no one s interest, and German politicians are realising this. The Bavarian Minister for Economic Affairs, Ilse Aigner, has said Great Britain is one of the most important trading partners in Bavaria. We must do everything we can to eliminate the uncertainties that have arisen. She subsequently called for extensive new trade agreements between the EU and Great Britain: There must be ways to re-establish economic relations with Great Britain without breaks. Aigner is correct. We must remember that we currently have zero tariffs, and enjoy conformity of regulations and standards. A comprehensive free trade agreement is vital, and should be easy to achieve. Our goal is, and always has been, reciprocal free trade. Above all, however, our goal must be to obey the command which the British people gave last June. The constitutional position we face is unprecedented. We have held a number of referendums over the last 50 years, but this is the first in which the people have contradicted the view of the political, judicial, financial, media and academic Establishment. Failure now to deliver what 17.4 million people voted for would do catastrophic damage to the integrity of the whole Establishment. We look forward, in a whole range of fields security, academia, scientific research, cultural exchanges to continuing with the closest possible co-operation. But we must and we will leave the political and legal arrangements of the EU, offering instead a vision of amicable, reciprocal free trade between sovereign nations, close neighbours and good friends.

36 36 The CBPG Magazine 20th July - 16th August 2017 Issue 9 The Costa Blanca Property & Business Guide CYCLOGICAL July 17 TOUR DE JUGUETTE SPORTIF 2017 by Gary and Lynn from Cyclogical in Quesada On Saturday 3rd June, seven riders from Team Cyclogical based in Ciudad Quesada travelled to Ibi in the North Alicante region to participate in the 7th Tour de Juguette Sportif (The Tour of the Toys) in and around the Sierra de la Penarroya mountain range. The team left from Cyclogical s shop in Quesada at 5.00am and travelled in 3 cars along the AP7 to Elche where they picked up the Madrid road, following it for 30kms before turning off towards Castalla and finally into Ibi. We arrived at 6.10am and started to prepare our bikes. We had no need to register as a couple of us went through on Friday evening to register and collect our numbers, goodie bag etc. We had also done a recce so we knew where to park and found a good tapas bar for our customary coffee and tostada for breakfast. We arrived at the start line at 6.50am where there were already hundreds of cyclists in front of us. The race was due to start at 7am and, having taken part in many of these Sportifs in the past I knew that they are normally minutes late in starting. However, bang on 7am off we went, one thousand five hundred cyclists. We left the town of Ibi and headed for Tibi where we had our first Cat 3 climb to Puerto Benifallim. There were 5 major climbs in total, 2 Cat 2, and 3 Cat 3, with the Puerto de Tudons being the toughest by far. The Puerto de Tudons has featured in many top races including La Vuelta (Tour de Espana). After the first climb we proceeded to Xixona then down to Muxtamel, Busot, then up through the Sierra de Cabazon del Oro towards Sella through Benasau and then headed back towards Ibi. This was a fantastic, scenic and very hilly route. Over the past 7 years, I have done many of these Sportifs and have now started to relax, slow down and enjoy them, I even had time to stop and take some pictures. We had 3 young riders with us who are really pushing us older guys: Harry, our apprentice mechanic, is only 18, Dom TJ is 24; and both have been cycling with us for only 9 months and are doing exceptionally well. Lynn s son, Matthew moved across to Spain in March to start a new life, he gave up smoking, got a new job and took up cycling even although he had never been on a road bike in his life. On his first week I took him out every night for 30k and on a couple of occasions he was physically sick, however through hard work, good training and determination he persevered and is now a very strong member of Some members of Team Cyclogical our group. Due to the timing of his arrival in Spain this was the only available Sportif that he could enter, not exactly an easy one to start with, however he just got his head down and got on with it. One of our riders, Paul Cheetham from Dubai, who has been riding with us for approx 5 years was over on holiday for a month and also entered this Sportif as part of our team. Paul is a very strong rider and has been riding road bikes since before he was able to walk. He has many race wins and awards to his name, Matthew and Paul pushed their way to the front of the peleton where Paul led the race for over 100k dictating the pace of the original peleton and then the breakaway group, Matthew staying on his wheel as long as he could. After completing the last major climb the breakaway group raced back to Ibi to cross the finish line. When they returned to Ibi, Paul was just pipped to the post and finished 2nd with Matthew finishing in an incredible 5th place out of 1500 riders - an amazing result. The rest of the group also performed exceptionally well and were delighted with their results. Unfortunately there was no silverware and no prize-giving ceremony which is proving quite commonplace now at local Sportifs with most people receiving a small commemorative plaque or medal engraved with your name and time. The event was exceptionally well organized front start to the finish, and on completion we proceeded to the food hall where there was a secure area to park your bikes, free food, drink, beer etc. for the competitors. Massages were available for anyone who chose to wait and also the swimming pool was open for those who wanted to cool off. This was a really gruelling route which covered a total distance of 142kms with 2,792 metres of pretty tough climbing thrown in for good measure. All in all a great day was had by all with stunning views and a perfect temperature of 32 degrees. The Team who took part were: Gary Routledge, Steve (turbo) Buckley, Matthew (moth) Robertson, Alan Quearns, Dom TJ, Harry Morrow and Paul Cheetham. All of the Team had an excellent but tough day s cycling and are looking forward to their next event in a few weeks time. It is this, doubtless, which explains why so many, the world over, feel the Spanish drama as a personal tragedy. - Albert Camus What happened in Spain can be seen all over Britain today; there are memorials commemorating those brave Brits who went to fight, literally scattered around the country - as far as Glasgow and Dundee to London and Southampton. These memorials exist because, in the 1930s, even though it was made illegal to do so, many courageous and determined British volunteers went to Spain to defend democracy and decency and fight against Franco s Fascism during the Spanish Civil War of A force of Nationalists (later referred to as Fascists) lead by General Francisco Franco, overthrew the legal - and democratically elected - Republican Government of Spain in a military coup. This catalysed a struggle that was to last for three years. It progressed almost immediately from a civil war to a total war, with Hitler and Mussolini aiding Franco and the Nationalists, and individuals from all over the world coming to the aid of the Republicans. Britain and France quickly opted for a position of non-intervention (in theory, if less so in practice). The struggle raged back and forth across Spain, and became a focus for the eyes of the world - partly because it was seen as a proxy war and the fate of the entire world seemed to be inexorably linked to the outcome in Spain. Indeed, many British people: from Aberdeen, to Manchester, Cardiff to London could already see this. During the late 1930 s Britain was in the middle of a recession, the tail end of which (the Great Depression) brought mass unemployment, hunger marches, and widespread discontent. Many British people felt a deep sympathy for the position of the Spanish peasants, who were also struggling. Some saw their fight against Fascism and for a better life as a class struggle, international and not only specific to Spain. It is perhaps unsurprising therefore that so many Brits took up the, struggle with Spain and went to fight Fascism in the International Brigades. Jimmy Maley was one of these people. He went from Glasgow straight into the bloodiest battle of the Spanish Civil War at Jarama where around 10,000 people died - almost 150 from the International Brigades. Jimmy was taken to a Spanish prison where his experiences were turned into the basis of a play: From the Calton to Catalonia. Many famous Brits joined those who went to fight in Spain: W. H Auden, originally from York, George Orwell, Tom Wintringham from Grimsby, and of course John Cornford who went from Cambridge to fight Franco s Fascists and gave his life in Spain. Although it became known as a poets and intellectuals war due to the seemingly disproportionate number of poets and writers that actually volunteered to fight, around 95% of those who joined the international Brigades from Britain were from working class backgrounds. Although it may have been a foreign war, they were fighting for ideals that were also British: freedom, democracy, and tolerance. A chance to fight for freedom and equality for the masses somewhere that it could make a tangible difference - conditions in Britain in the 1930s were undoubtedly bad, but not nearly as bad as in Spain. It also offended many that it was a legal and legitimate government that had been overthrown by a military rising. The reasons these individuals went were diverse whether political or moral. However, as C.D Lewis wrote in his 1938 poem Volunteer We came because our open eyes could see no other way. Out of 40,000 International Volunteers from 53 countries, including as far away as America (Hemmingway fought in the International Brigades himself) who went to fight in Spain, 2,100 were British. Of those brave 2,100 men and women, 534 (the figure changes depending on which memorial you are looking at but it was around 530) would never return to British soil alive. It was not only the International Brigades that linked Spain with the UK however - there was also Guernica. Guernica and the Southampton Refugee Children On Guernica loosed their venom, Hammered helpless men and women Into pulped and writhing earth. Thus they brought the blitz to birth. -George Steer (War correspondent) On 29 April 1937, a massive force of German Junker, Heinkel and Messershmitt planes and fighters that made up Hitler s Condor Legion, bombed and machinegunned Guernica at around 4.30pm on market day. Guernica was the cultural heartland of the Basque people, and at that time it was busy with women, children, stalls, and animals. Incendiary bombs were used which burst into flame on impact. The town was absolutely destroyed, and was described as a complete success for the Condor Legion. Report after report flooded into Britain, many telling the official and untrue story of red-atrocities in the town of Guernica, the torching and destruction of a town by red (or communist) insurgents. However, British journalists and experienced war correspondents who witnessed the German attack also sent dispatches back to Britain, recounting what really happened in the town that day. Christopher Holme wrote, The world ended tonight [the people] are scratching for fragments of their slaughtered world. The effect of this reporting was immediate, the bombing of Guernica became the most vilified and hated event of the Spanish Civil War, crystallising the forces of good against evil in many people s minds. The reports continued. Monks was the first British correspondent on the scene. His article, Guernica destroyed by German planes, told of a wilful atrocity. Most of Guernica s streets began or ended at the Plaza. It was impossible to go down many of them because they were walls of flame. Debris was piled high. George Steer told a similar story, Out of the hills we saw Guernica itself. A meccano framework. At every window piercing eyes of fire, where the very roof had stood wild trailing locks of fire. The sheer scale of the bombing shocked many, but the deaths of the hundreds of innocent women and children shocked more. The involvement of the German Condor Legions also left many with a sense of foreboding. However, it was the reporting that touched the hearts of those in Britain, so much so that the government agreed to offer shelter to Basque refugee children, their first foray away from non-intervention. And by Terry Stewart on 23 May 1937 the first Basque children arrived in Southampton. There is a plaque commemorating this event standing to this day. Couple this with the opening of the World Exhibition in Paris on 25 May 1937, showing Picasso s Guernica and it is unsurprising that the sympathy with the Basque refugees developed in Britain the way it did. Many of the British public made the trip to see Guernica, but many saw prints, and heard about it on news broadcasts, it became the most political and controversial of Picasso s works. A huge canvas in stark black and white, which solidified the right versus wrong idea already seeded in people s minds. It shows a tangle of mutilated animals, people and debris, most famously a woman holding a dead child to her breast. The involvement of the International Brigades and the arrival of the Basque children in Southampton are two aspects of the story that show the inextricable links between a Spanish fight that was taken up by those brave British souls, whose open eyes really could see no other way. 44 44 The CBPG Magazine 20th July - 16th August 2017 Issue 9 The Costa Blanca Property & Business Guide The Mediterranean Sea: a new accumulation zone of plastic debris Large quantities of plastic debris are building up in the Mediterranean Sea, say scientists. A survey found around one thousand tonnes of plastic floating on the surface, mainly fragments of bottles, bags, polystyrene and wrappings. The Mediterranean Sea s biological richness and economic importance means plastic pollution is particularly hazardous, say Spanish researchers. The Mediterranean Sea represents less than 1% of the global ocean area, but is important in economic and ecological terms. It contains between 4% and 18% of all marine species, and provides tourism and fishing income for Mediterranean countries. The vast and varied biological wealth and concentration of economic activities in the Mediterranean Sea means the effects of plastic pollution on marine and human life could be particularly relevant in this plastic accumulation zone Plastic has been found in the stomachs of fish, birds, turtles and whales. Very tiny pieces of plastic pollution, referred to a microplastics have also been found in oysters and mussels grown on the coasts of northern Europe. The Mediterranean Sea is identified as a great accumulation zone of plastic debris, and Andres Cozar of the University of Cadiz in Puerto Real, Spain, and colleagues have said Marine plastic pollution has spread to become a problem of planetary scale after only half a century of widespread use of plastic materials, calling for urgent management strategies to address this problem. Plastic is accumulating in the Mediterranean Sea at a similar scale to that in oceanic gyres, the rotating ocean currents in the Indian Ocean, North Atlantic, North Pacific, South Atlantic and South Pacific, the study found. A high abundance of plastic has also been found in other seas, including the Bay of Bengal, South China Sea and Barents Sea in the Arctic Ocean. Commenting on a study published in the journal PLOS ONE, Dr David Morritt of Royal Holloway, University of London, said scientists were particularly concerned about very small pieces of plastic (less than 5mm in length), known as microplastics. The study found more than 80% of plastic items in the Mediterranean Sea fell into this category. These very small plastic fragments lend themselves to being swallowed by marine species, potentially releasing chemicals into the gut from the plastics, Plastic doesn t degrade in the environment - we need to think much more carefully about how we dispose of it, recycle it, and reduce our use of it. The Mediterranean Sea has been recently proposed as one of the most impacted regions of the world with regards to microplastics, however the polymeric composition of these floating particles is still largely unknown. The graph below represents the results of a large-scale survey of plastic pollution found floating in Mediterranean waters, providing the first extensive characterization of their chemical identity as well as detailed information on their abundance and geographical distribution from the published journal article The Mediterranean Plastic Soup: synthetic polymers in Mediterranean surface waters by Suaria, Giuseppe, et al Low-density polymers such as polyethylene and polypropylene were the most abundant compounds, followed by polyamides, plasticbased paints, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene and polyvinyl alcohol. Less frequent polymers included polyethylene terephthalate, polyisoprene, poly(vinyl stearate), ethylene-vinyl acetate, polyepoxide, paraffin wax and polycaprolactone, a biodegradable polyester reported for the first time floating in off-shore waters. Geographical differences in sample composition were also observed, demonstrating sub-basin scale heterogeneity in plastics distribution and likely reflecting a complex interplay between pollution sources, sinks and residence times of different polymers at sea. Across the globe it is being described as The Plastic Age, much like the Bronze Age and the Iron Age, the world is now living through a Plastic Age. Five major accumulations of plastic waste in the open ocean, coinciding with the five major ocean gyres have been identified. Beside the well-known accumulation of plastic residues in the North Pacific Gyre - a rotating water current - researchers have found similar waste in the centre of the North Atlantic, South Pacific, South Atlantic and the Indian Ocean. Cózar s latest research reveals a sixth large accumulation of plastics, in the Mediterranean Sea. The measurements in the Mediterranean, when compared with the ones taken in each one of the gyres, including the much-discussed North Pacific Gyre, what was found was that the average concentrations were similar to those in the Mediterranean. Cózar revealed these findings at the 5th International Symposium on Marine Sciences, held recently at Alicante University where he stated his fears of these findings being just the tip of the iceberg of plastic waste, less than one per cent. Large amounts of microplastics, he warns, are trickling down the food chain and to the seabed. What to do about it? First of all it is clear that the current legal and economic incentives are not strong enough to steer plastic recycling. The separate collection of waste is not efficient enough and too many plastics and other waste streams- end up in disposal facilities. Moreover, the extended producer responsibility schemes for plastic waste are scarce and its performance uneven; Germany recycles 98,5% of plastic packaging whereas Spain collects less than 30%. Also, markets for recycled plastic are not yet fully optimised and the demand of this secondary material low. Some measures to fix these problems are: Ban or heavily tax disposal of recyclable plastic waste in landfills or incinerators, Encourage as much as possible separate collection of plastic waste pay as you throw- and

In Villajoyosa (Alicante), local fishermen have launched a project to turn the plastic that gets caught in their nets into textiles. Experts recommend investing in beach cleanups after storms to remove some of the sea plastic. Other organisations like Plastic Patrol based in Denia, Costa Blanca. What they do is they are volunteers who actually go out in boats and clean what sea they can reach. Bottle by bottle, bag by bag and every lump of polystyrene we find. They face an enormous task, but if they manage to save a Sun Fish here or a Turtle there then at least they are scratching the tip of that iceberg. One day they hope to reach the goal of eradicating plastic pollution by campaigning to remove its source. Researchers from the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) have started an oceanographic survey to assess microplastic contamination in both water and sediments off the coast of Galicia and Cantabria. For eight days, scientists will study the spatial and temporal distribution of micro-plastics and their associated pollutants and evaluate the effectiveness of sampling different networks for the study of these emerging pollutants. The study is carried out aboard the scientific research vessel Ramon Margalef, which will cover part of the Atlantic and Cantabrian coastline sampling surface waters and sediments between 50 and 200 meters. The survey is part of the European project BASEMAN (setting protocols and references for the analysis of microplastics in European waters), funded by the JPI- Oceans and coordinated by the German research centre Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI). The main objective of BASEMAN is to establish a standard methodology for the identification and quantification of contamination by microplastics in the oceans. This project, which involves 26 institutions from 14 countries, is divided into five work chapters, one of which, the one on sampling, is led by Jesus Gago, a researcher at the IEO s Vigo Oceanographic Centre. Other efficient measures include; setting up floating barriers at the mouth of urban rivers, improving waste management techniques, researching new materials to replace plastic, encouraging volunteer clean-up in coastal areas, and conducting awareness campaigns to show people that what goes into the sea is eventually ending up on their plates. The majority of us keep money in a bank account. Why? Because it is easy, relatively secure, and easily accessible. There is also a Deposit Protection Scheme in place which covers the amount in your bank account up to 100,000 or 85,000. So far, so good? R eturns are not good, interest rates are hardly inflation-beating and your hard-earned cash is not really being put to work for you. In fact, the average savings account is paying less than 1% per year and some have even reduced to 0.2% or even 0.1%! S etting up a Spanish tax compliant bond is no more difficult than setting up a bank account, and, once you have invested, you have easy access to your money: regular, or one-off withdrawals, to suit your needs. What about growth on your savings? What is the alternative? - A Spanish Tax Compliant Bond The Deposit Protection amount has been reduced from 85,000 which was the previous compensation limit. This means that if a bank or building society cannot meet its obligations and subsequently fails, or becomes insolvent, the maximum compensation you will receive will be 85,000 or 150,000 for a joint account (husband and wife). We are sorry for the delay in announcing the final total - we wanted to give everyone a chance to collect and hand in their sponsorship money. Thank you to everyone who was involved or took part on the day, we look forward to seeing you all next year. Willie, wife Jill, and Karen Williams (Pink Ladies Secretary) A fantastic weekend of golf and entertainment with snooker ace Willie Thorne was accomplished by John Williams and his Mum, Karen (Pink Willie, wife Jill and some diners before the Charity Dinner Ladies secretary) from Evolution Bar, La Fuente, who were raising money for the AECC Maria and the Pink Ladies/Panthers. The two day spectacular started with breakfast at the Evolution Bar before the 50 golfers made the trip to Lo Romero to take part in a Texas Scramble tournament. Willie played one hole with each of the twelve teams, and while the golfers were busy trying to win, come rain or shine, the ladies took part in a Bucks Fizz brunch at Evolution Bar. A delicious taster menu was served whilst listening to the talented Just Ollie. Willie and the golfers later returned to join the ladies for a relaxed afternoon of food and drink, a raffle and a chance to chat to Willie and his lovely wife Jill. Sunday evening saw the continuation of the charity event at Fairways Restaurant, Villamartin Plaza, hosted by Roy and Karen. Diners were greeted with cava and canapés followed by a delicious three course meal. Throughout the evening Willie kept the guests entertained with stories and sporting anecdotes, and presented the prizes to the winning golfers. After the auction of snooker memorabilia, Chloe Leigh had the crowd dancing the night away. Karen and John would like to thank Willie and Jill Thorne, Roy and Karen of Fairways, Gavin from Albatross Golf, to name but a few, and to all that took part and helped to raise 1,300. And many thanks to Costa Blanca People for providing the photographs. Brass Band from San Miguel have just finished for the summer break after a long hard season of concerts that has seen the band go from strength to strength. One of our highlights was appearing with World Champion whistling sensation David Morris, who has just completed a very successful 2 concert visit to Spain, where he performed with us in both Guardamar and San Miguel de Salinas. David appeared with the Band by invitation from his long-time friends, Ian and Sandra Gibson (ex-licensees of the Navigation Inn, Dobcross). Ian and Sandra have lived and worked in the Costa Blanca area of Spain for the last 18 years, where they now have a British-style brass band of around 30 members. Other members of the band reunited with David were Trudy Osbaldestan (principal cornet) who was one of his pupils in Boarshurst Band; Pauline Wilde (cornet) who played alongside David at Boarshurst and Dobcross; and lan Schofield (Eb bass) also from Dobcross Band. In addition to the concerts, David featured on the Spanish radio station Sunshine FM with Simon Morton, an ex-trumpeter from the Guards Band (who was blown away with David s talent). Simon said: I am going to make David a regular feature on my Show!. David s whistle stop visit to Spain was squeezed into a very busy schedule he is now off to the Abbey Road Studios in London to perform with the London Symphony Orchestra, recording the music for a new film. Asked what it was like visiting his old friends in Spain, David said: It was a fantastic place to visit and the Band and the people were great, it was a busy schedule, very hot and very tiring, but the odd vino tinto certainly helped! The Band would like to thank all the people who have supported us over the last 12 months, which has been a very enjoyable and rewarding time. We sent the profit from the whistler concert, 200, to the fund for the Manchester bomb victims and another 200 to a young trombone player in the U.K. with leukaemia. Our final concert of the season was on the sea front in La Mata last Saturday night (8th July) where we played to a large, enthusiastic Spanish audience, entertaining David Morris (in sombrero) with some band members and Ian Gibson (Chairman) 2nd from right them with popular British and Spanish music.
