There s a lot of discussion at the moment about a no deal Brexit. What does that actually mean? It seems to mean slightly different things to different people. But in the current context it basically means that there would be no formal agreement reached during the negotiations between the UK and the EU, which are taking place under the terms of Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty. These are the negotiations that are led by David Davis for the UK and Michel Barnier for the EU - the fifth round of talks is being held in Brussels this week. Even if there is no deal under Article 50, there would still have to be some kind of formal relationship between the UK and the EU in the long term - for trade, security and every other aspect of bilateral ties. But if the Article 50 process fails there is very little time to work on alternative strategies before Brexit in March When would we know if there was going to be a no deal Brexit? This is an important question because the timing is critical. One scenario, being pushed by some Eurosceptic Conservative MPs, is that if the current negotiations make no progress - and the EU refuses to move on to talk about a future trade deal - the UK should announce that it will pursue a no deal Brexit instead. Leave supporters believe that would free the UK from all EU structures in one fell swoop. If such a decision were to be made in, say, March 2018 there would still be a year before the UK is due to leave the EU. That s very little time to prepare for such a massive change, but it would be better than nothing. A more worrying scenario for many business leaders, and millions of citizens who are caught up in the Brexit process, is that something could go wrong at the very last minute - perhaps a deal that has been tentatively agreed but is subsequently rejected by one side or the other. Then the UK could crash out of the EU with neither side fully prepared for the consequences. This is the cliff edge that gives many people in business and politics sleepless nights - a chaotic Brexit that would benefit no one. Are preparations for no deal already taking place? Yes they are - on both sides of the Channel. The UK government has been careful to say that it is not seeking a no deal outcome, but that it has to be prepared for all eventualities. The Prime Minister has tried to move away from an emphasis on her initial message that no deal is better than a bad deal - but when pushed she continues to defend that stance. So there is a combination here of prudent planning behind the scenes, and public statements which aim to have an impact on the negotiations - trying to hurry things up by warning of possible alternatives. For the EU, the President of the European Council Donald Tusk has been very clear, arguing that no deal would be the worst deal of all. A no-deal scenario would be bad for everyone, he said earlier this year, but above all for the UK. Contingency planning is also happening elsewhere in the EU, though - within both governments and the business community. The Federation of German Industries (BDI) said last week that it was setting up a task force of major companies to make provisions for the serious case of a very hard exit. Anything else, it said, would be naïve. What would no deal mean in practice? If the two-year Article 50 process came to an end with no agreement, the UK would leave the EU on 29 March 2019 with no deal in place. Again, much would then depend on how long both sides have had to prepare for this. The consequences of no deal would affect almost every aspect of life, and it is impossible to say exactly how events would unfold. But here are a few examples: UK Brexit Secretary David Davis and Chief EU Negotiator Michel Barnier say they both want a deal Money: With no agreement in place, according to a House of Lords report there would be no legal obligation for the UK to make any payment as part of a financial settlement. That would leave a huge hole in the EU budget. It would save the UK money in this instance, but it would antagonise the rest of the EU and further sour relations. Legal action, possibly via the International Court of Justice in The Hague, could not be ruled out. Citizens: Without a deal or other residency rights, the entitlement of EU nationals to reside in the UK, or of UK nationals to reside elsewhere in the EU, could technically disappear overnight. In theory, they could become third country nationals, subject to domestic immigration rules. Given the fact that this would affect more than three By Chris Morris, Reality Check correspondent, BBC News million EU citizens in the UK, and nearly a million UK citizens in the EU, it could well be that individual EU countries would try to strike deals with the UK to guarantee citizens rights. Common sense should prevail, but that cannot be guaranteed. Trade: With no new trade agreement with the EU, the rules of the World Trade Organisation would apply. Tariffs would be imposed on goods that the UK sends to the EU, and on goods the EU sends to the UK. It would not be the frictionless trade - certainly to begin with - that the government hopes to promote. Tariffs on many industrial products would be 2-3%, but on cars they would be 10% and on many agricultural products between 20% and 40%. The trade in services would also suffer if nothing was agreed in advance. Under a pure no deal scenario, businesses would lose their passporting rights, which allow them to sell their services across the EU without having to obtain licences in each individual country. The financial services industry would be particularly vulnerable, and it accounts for a significant slice of the UK economy. Again it is worth emphasising that all these restrictions would apply to EU businesses wanting to trade in the UK as well. No deal is not a one-way street. Without any deal, and with no transition period negotiated, the UK would be free to sign trade agreements around the world as soon as it could finalise them. Customs: A government White Paper on customs published recently, sets out options for a no deal scenario in more detail. A customs bill will make provision for the UK to establish a stand-alone customs regime from day one, applying the same duties to every country with which it has no special deal. Traders would need to present goods to HM Revenue and Customs inland as much as possible to avoid congestion at ports, and consignments would need to be pre-notified to customs authorities, to try to ensure that trade continues to flow as seamlessly as possible. The White Paper promises to minimise disruption for business and travellers - but to give some idea of the scale of the challenge, HMRC estimates that about 130,000 businesses that export to the EU would be dealing with customs for the first time. No deal is not the government s preferred option; and the detail in the customs paper hints at how disruptive it could be. The border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland would, in particular, be a huge concern, with serious ramifications for the Northern Ireland peace process. Regulations: With no deal of any kind in place, the UK would suddenly cease to be a member of dozens of regulatory agencies that govern many aspects of daily life. In time, it would need to replace all of them with agencies of its own. Thousands of new employees would need to be recruited and trained - a process which should have already started if there were to be any chance of it being completed before Brexit. EU bodies that regulate the aviation industry and the pharmaceutical industry are often cited as prime examples. One of the main concerns associated with a cliff edge Brexit is that there would be no time to put new measures in place, even if plenty of contingency planning had been done. In theory - under a worst case scenario - that could mean that planes would be grounded temporarily, and drugs could not be imported. But again, the hope would be that common sense would prevail, and that some kind of interim arrangements would be made to keep things moving. It would be in the interests of neither the UK nor the EU for chaos to ensue.

After hitting a nine-week high of on the 27th September, the GBP/EUR exchange rate has fallen significantly and now trends around On the other hand, EUR/GBP is in the region of , with EUR/USD trending around US$ right in the middle of the month s trading range. What s been happening? A disappointing run of UK PMIs and more signs of Tory infighting have combined to keep the pound steadily on the decline this month. Brexit negotiations continue to stall and Theresa May even went as far as telling Parliament that the UK should be prepared for a no deal Brexit as a contingency. The euro has plenty to contend with as well. Catalonia voted overwhelmingly for independence during its referendum, but regional President Carles Puigdemont announced that the split would be suspended to allow for negotiations to take place. What do you need to look out for? There s plenty on the UK data calendar over the coming weeks to keep the pound volatile. Data to watch out for includes the next inflation reading. Catalonia will continue to be a focus for the euro, as there is a chance Spain may invoke constitutional powers to seize control of the region. The European Central Bank s 27th October monetary policy meeting will be a key event. Markets are expecting officials to announce tapering to quantitative easing; if this happens the euro could rise. The US FOMC meets again this month. Markets are expecting no changes, but the meeting will be important nonetheless, as it will show whether or not a December rate hike is still likely. 36 36 The CBPG Magazine 19th October - 15th November 2017 Issue 12 The Costa Blanca Property & Business Guide CYCLOGICAL October 17 by Gary and Lynn from Cyclogical in Quesada UNIBIKE THE SPANISH BIKE SHOW On Friday 22nd September I left a sleepy Quesada at 5.30am accompanied by our apprentice mechanic Harry Morrow and stepson Moth Robertson and headed for Alicante to catch the High Speed train to Unibike in Madrid. We boarded the train and left Alicante Railway Station on schedule at 7.10 and were soon sitting in comfort with issue headphones, a good video and a cup of coffee this is the way to travel stress-free! Just after 9.00am we arrived in Madrid and caught a taxi direct to the Recinto Ferial Ifema (Madrid s Exhibition Centre). Last year we took the Underground and seemed to take forever with 3 train changes so this year we took a taxi, got there in half an hour and also saw a bit of the city. On arrival we checked in, got our security passes, took a few pictures and proceeded to the main hall. The Unibike Exhibition consisted of 3 large halls with all the main bike and accessory dealers from all over Spain having large displays. Having Harry with us last year was a godsend as he speaks Spanish like a machine gun. It was really beneficial for us as we now buy direct from a number of Spanish companies, including Shimano Spain. Our first impression on entering the main hall was the number of exhibitors - every bike manufacturer that you can think of was represented. After a few hours looking at all the new models and accessories, we had a well-deserved lunch break where we took time to review and consider the different models and companies we would like to start working with. There was a large number of cycle rack suppliers, supplying racks for the rear of your car, which ranged in price from 70 to 1,000 - some of them looking like something out of Star Wars. The makes and models of bikes were incredible but we felt the bikes were drab colours eg matt black, grey etc. We even saw a beautifullymade, fully equipped, wooden bike by Shimano which retailed at 8,000! What we found most interesting was the number and range of e-bikes now coming on to the market most of the big companies are now doing electric mountain bikes, cycle-cross and road bikes. I would guess that 75% of the bikes on display at the show were e-bikes, so this is certainly the way forward. Outside there were many stalls inviting people to try e-mountain bikes, e-road bikes, BMX, fat boys etc and an abundance of people were queueing to try these out. All in all we had an excellent day at the show, saw a lot, learnt a lot and now have some lovely new models of e- and hybrid bikes arriving in the next few weeks. We are looking forward to next year s show already! THE CLAIM: The UK could, in theory, walk away from the EU without paying any money at all. We don t as a matter of law owe anything at all - David Jones MP, 15 October. We re actually under no legal obligation to pay any money at all after we ve left - Bernard Jenkin MP, 22 September. We don t owe them any money - John Redwood MP, 7 August. Legally we owe nothing - Jacob Rees- Mogg MP, 6 August. REALITY CHECK VERDICT: Leading Brexiteers are fond of saying that there is no legal obligation on the UK to pay anything at all to the EU as it departs. If there is no deal under the Article 50 process that is almost certainly correct as a strictly legal interpretation, but it is untested. And no deal on money would also mean no deal on any other issues as well. Legal and political considerations are obviously intertwined in the debate about a financial settlement as the UK prepares to leave the EU. But it is possible to separate them in some respects. Article 70 of the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties states that the termination of a treaty does not affect the right, obligation or legal situation of the parties created through the execution of the treaty prior to its termination. In other words, as the EU would argue, your obligations only come to an end on the day of the termination of an international treaty - the get-out clause doesn t apply to obligations made before you leave. But - and it is a big but - there is a crucial caveat. Those terms apply under the Vienna Convention unless the treaty otherwise provides or the parties otherwise agree. And the treaty in question - the Treaty on European Union (TEU) - does provide otherwise, in the form of the famous Article 50. So Article 50 of the TEU trumps Article 70 of the Vienna Convention. Now, Article 50 doesn t say anything about money Would refusing to pay cause more problems than it would solve? or rights or obligations. So, in this interpretation, the UK would not be required to pay anything if there were to be no withdrawal agreement, because the treaty itself says nothing about any such payments. Article 50 says the treaties shall cease to apply to the state in question either when a withdrawal agreement takes effect, or two years after the Article 50 process By Chris Morris, Correspondent, BBC News has been triggered by the member state that intends to leave. This is the ticking clock. An in-depth report on this debate, issued by the House of Lords, acknowledges that there are competing interpretations on what the UK should pay, but it reaches the conclusion that, because the European treaties do not say anything on the matter, there would be no enforceable obligation to make the UK pay any financial contribution at all. The Lords has taken the view that Article 50 is in effect a guillotine and the UK would be free to walk away without any responsibilities should agreement not be reached. But, and we ll come back to this, it warns that there would be a price to pay. It is also important to emphasise that these are largely uncharted legal waters and some kind of legal challenge at an international level would probably be made. The EU itself could not bring a case against the UK at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, because it is not a sovereign state. But the remaining 27 member states - acting either individually or collectively - could in theory appeal to the ICJ, or to another relevant international tribunal. They would want their money back. And this is where we have to get back to politics. No deal on money would mean no deal on any of the other issues being negotiated under Article 50, such as the rights of citizens and the future of the border between Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic. Walking away with no agreement would also do significant reputational damage to the UK - if we can t trust you on past obligations, EU officials would argue, why should we trust you on future ones? That is why the British government says it wants a deal and it accepts that it does have financial obligations to meet. The trouble is there s no agreement so far on precisely what those obligations are. In conclusion, it is easy to say - in isolation - that the UK has no legal obligation to pay anything at all. But the reality is that such a provocative move would cause far more problems than it would solve. Most leading Brexiteers acknowledge that, and accept (with varying degrees of reluctance) that the UK should pay something as a gesture of goodwill. On the EU side it is seen as rather more than that - it is a prerequisite for any deal to succeed. CAN BREXIT LESSONS BE LEARNED FROM SCANDINAVIAN NEIGHBOURS? There has been a lot of talk about how the UK - Irish border might be affected by Brexit. Will it be hard or soft? Will there be customs posts if, as some suggest, the UK leaves the EU customs union? By BBC correspondent Shane Harrison has been to Norway, which is outside the EU, to see how it operates its border with Sweden. It s mid-morning in Oslo and the first snows of the winter are falling on the already frozen ground. All around, Norwegians are well wrapped up and getting on with their lives. A few miles away at his home overlooking a fjord in the suburbs, Phelim Rooney says he misses the banter and craic in Ireland, but loves the distinctive four seasons of the country he has called home for the last 40 years.. A structural engineer working in the oil industry, he grew up in County Leitrim beside the border with Fermanagh and prays that, because of Brexit, there will be no return to a hard border in his homeland. But like many in the city, he has been known to cross another border - that with Sweden and the European Union - to do some shopping. The price of everything is so much less down there, he said. People come back with as much alcohol, within the limits, that they can get in their car. Chicken and all sorts of meat are also a lot cheaper. Driving between the two countries, I was offered a choice of lane. If I took the green one, I was saying I had nothing to declare, while a red one suggested that I had something. Cars or lorries who break the rules can be heavily fined. All trucks crossing between the two countries have to go to one of 17 one-stop shops on either side of the border to process their paper work. Eleven are in Norway. Truck drivers from all over Europe go the main desk with their papers. If everything is in order and there s no spot-check, the delay for the driver averages eight minutes, according to Kristen Hoiberget, the customs chief at Svinesund. This is thanks, in part, to the use of electronic technology. He says he would really recommend the system to the British and Irish authorities for post-brexit. If you are able to find a good tone between the two countries you can save a lot of money on the bureaucracy and efficiency. And it would be very accommodating for the customers. Carolen Carlsson on the Swedish side of the border agrees. It offers a one-stop shop for businesses that trade on both sides of the border. So, it basically saves time and money for businesses managing their trade between the two countries and the European Union, she said. Automatic number plate recognition technology is used for intelligence purposes to suggest which vehicles should be stopped. X-ray machines can also be deployed to examine whether what is actually on board, tallies with what is in the paperwork. Delays can be little as half an hour for a driver like Robert Sitarczyk, from Poland, who was stopped with his cargo of car parts from France for Oslo. I ve been stopped twice here. Everything is OK. The people are OK. I ve been waiting here 20 to 30 minutes. I don t have tobacco or alcohol so I don t have a problem, he says. Richard Milne, the A lorry passes through the Norway-Sweden border Financial Times Nordic and Baltic correspondent, says the Norwegian-Swedish border is how both the UK and Irish governments would like their border to be, but adds there has to be some scepticism about the political realities. The question for Britain and Ireland is, he says, Is it achievable? Norway is inside the Single Market. Britain, at the moment, is not likely to be according to the mood music. That makes it harder to conceive how this might be at an Irish-British border. Yes, this is the model but let s see how practical it is to copy it. So, uncertainty remains, but who knows what will happen on the border between the Republic of Ireland and Ireland, and the European Union and the United Kingdom.

Homeostasis can only be maintained if there is internal harmony (Homeo means same and Stasis means state ). Holistic treatments such as reflexology, aromatherapy, reiki and so on are all carried out with the aim of bringing the body into balance. You cannot treat just one part of the body and ignore all the others and hope that the result is totally successful. What goes around comes around is so apt a phrase when it comes to describing the condition of the human body. How you treat your body during life will have repercussions for your future well-being. We should, therefore, look at all aspects of our lives if we aim to live long and healthily. When you visit a holistic therapist you may well be asked questions which to you have no bearing on why you are having the treatment, but a responsible and fully qualified therapist will want to look further than the symptoms you have and try to discover the cause. This is where alternative medicine (also known as holistic therapies) and orthodox medicine can vary many doctors just treat the symptoms! Having said that, more and more doctors are starting to realise the benefits of alternative medicines and are either training in certain fields or working alongside holistic therapists to get better results. There are various factors that affect our health which we sometimes take for granted, but to achieve homeostasis we need to be aware of them and make sure that we pay attention to them. Air The air we breathe contains the nutrient vital for life oxygen. We need a good supply of oxygen to maintain the functions of our body s different systems. Any toxins in our environment are absorbed into the body through the integumentary system breaking down the protective acid mantle, resulting in skin, hair and nails that are more prone to problems. Approximately 2,000 litres of blood pass through the brain every day, allowing the absorption of approximately 60 litres of oxygen. The body cannot generally replace nerve cells so their need for oxygen is paramount to prevent deterioration. The quality of air has a direct effect on our immune system. Impure air inhaled into the body stimulates immunity in order to prevent the body from coming under attack by foreign bodies that may be present in the air. This could have a longterm debilitating effect on our immune functions e.g. the damaging effect of one cigarette may be counteracted by the stimulation of blood cells in response to smoking. However, if you keep smoking this pushes the body to its limits resulting in possible illness. Water Most of our body is made up of water. We contain intracellular fluid (water found in our cells) and extracellular fluid (water found in our body fluids e.g. blood, mucus etc). Nervous tissue, blood, skin, hair, nails and lymphatic tissue all rely on water for the maintenance of their functions. The immune system relies on there being adequate amounts of water available in the body. Approximately 90% of blood plasma is water in which chemical substances are suspended or dissolved. Our brains are made up of 75% water and water is needed by neurons (nerve cells) to encourage the action of electrical impulses through the nerve fibres. Water is not only contained in the layers of the skin, hair and nails but it also forms the sweat and sebum secreted from the sudoriferous and sebaceous glands. Eating and drinking provides the body with most of the water needed this is known as performed water. Metabolic water refers to that which is produced through cellular function. Our bodies need approximately 1½ litres of performed water to prevent dehydration. We are dehydrated when the body loses more water than it takes in. Many conditions, such as headaches, fatigue, skin problems and rheumatoid pain can be linked to dehydration. It is important to remember that during our hot summers, sweating can cause the body to lose in excess of 15 glasses of water per day! Also, when we get hunger pangs it can actually mean that we need water not food. Nutrition As well as air and water we need nutrients gained from the foods we eat to maintain the body s functions. Digested food is absorbed into the bloodstream and transported around the body for use by every living cell. We need a balanced diet consisting of: Proteins these help the body grow and repair Carbohydrates used by the body in the production of energy Fats provide the body with an additional source of fuel Minerals and vitamins essential for all processes within the body Rest and Relaxation All of our body systems need periods of rest to allow the body to counteract the actions involved in periods of activity. Rest can be divided into two categories relaxation and sleep. Relaxation offers the body a period of rest during which time we release physical and psychological tension. Sleep offers the body a period of rest during which voluntary action and consciousness are either in partial or complete abeyance. How much rest we need depends on factors such as our age, activity, lifestyle and stress levels. Babies need an average of 16 hours per day whereas the elderly can manage on an average of 5 hours a day. If we don t get the sleep we need the following can happen: Nerve responses become slower, concentration times lessen and the brain feels muddled and overloaded. The eyes may become strained with tiredness, affecting vision. Venous blood flow may be impeded as it fights against the pull of gravity back to the heart. Skin, hair and nails become dull and lifeless with the finer skin around the eyes developing dark shadows. Extreme tiredness often results in low immunity as the protective functions of the body become affected. Activity In the same way that the body needs rest, it also needs periods of activity. If you don t use you lose it is so true with regards to the body the body functions diminish through lack of use. The nervous system relies on physical and mental activity to keep it healthy. Venous blood flow relies on the action of skeletal muscles for the flow of blood back to the heart. The integumentary system relies on physical activity to stimulate blood flow for the continuous renewal of skin, hair and nail cells. The immune system relies on physical and psychological activity to stimulate the actions of its structures in the fight against disease. We all have the right to live healthy, happy lives but we need to realise that it is up to us as individuals to strive to achieve this. Our health and happiness is our responsibility no-one else s!

Not convinced? Here are 30 major cycling benefits, spread across improving your health, happiness and relationships. 1. YOU LL GET THERE FASTER Commute by bike in the UK s major cities and you ll get there in half the time of cars, research by Citroen shows. In fact, if you drive for an hour in Cardiff s rush hour, you ll spend over 30 minutes going absolutely nowhere and average just 7mph, compared to averaging around 12-15mph while cycling. And even in bikefriendly or less congested cities outside of the UK, you ll still generally get around the city centres faster on a bike. 2. YOU LL SLEEP MORE DEEPLY An early morning ride might tire you out in the short term, but it ll help you catch some quality shut-eye when you get back to your pillow. Stanford University School of Medicine researchers asked sedentary insomnia sufferers to cycle for minutes every other day. The result? The time required for the insomniacs to fall asleep was reduced by half, and sleep time increased by almost an hour. Exercising outside exposes you to daylight, explains Professor Jim Horne from Loughborough University s Sleep Research Centre. This helps get your circadian rhythm back in sync, and also rids your body of cortisol, the stress hormone that can prevent deep, regenerative sleep. Riding bikes boosts your brainpower, relationships, health and happiness! 3. YOU LL LOOK YOUNGER Scientists at Stanford University have found that cycling regularly can protect your skin against the harmful effects of UV radiation and reduce the signs of ageing. Harley Street dermatologist Dr Christopher Rowland Payne explains: Increased circulation through exercise delivers oxygen and nutrients to skin cells more effectively, while flushing harmful toxins out. Exercise also creates an ideal environment within the body to optimise collagen production, helping reduce the appearance of wrinkles and speed up the healing process. Don t forget to slap on the factor 30 before you head out, though. 4. BOOST YOUR BOWELS According to experts from Bristol University, the benefits of cycling extend deep into your core. Physical activity helps decrease the time it takes food to move through the large intestine, limiting the amount of water absorbed back into your body and leaving you with softer stools, which are easier to pass, explains Harley Street gastroenterologist Dr Ana Raimundo. In addition, aerobic exercise accelerates your breathing and heart rate, which helps to stimulate the contraction of intestinal muscles. As well as preventing you from feeling bloated, this helps protect you against bowel cancer, Dr Raimundo says. 5. INCREASE YOUR BRAIN POWER Need your grey matter to sparkle? Then get pedalling. Researchers from the University of Illinois found that a five percent improvement in cardio-respiratory fitness from cycling led to an improvement of up to 15 percent in mental tests. That s because cycling helps build new brain cells in the hippocampus Riding will help you sleep more deeply the region responsible for memory, which deteriorates from the age of 30. It boosts blood flow and oxygen to the brain, which fires and regenerates receptors, explaining how exercise helps ward off Alzheimer s, says the study s author, Professor Arthur Kramer. 6. BEAT ILLNESS Is cycling good for you? Yes! Forget apples, riding s the way to keep the doctor at bay. Moderate exercise makes immune cells more active, so they re ready to fight off infection, says Cath Collins, chief dietician at St George s Hospital in London. Cycling regularly is a surefire way to keep illness at bay. In fact, according to research from the University of North Carolina, people who cycle for 30 minutes, five days a week take about half as many sick days as couch potatoes. 7. LIVE LONGER King s College London compared over 2,400 identical twins and found those who did the equivalent of just three 45-minute rides a week were nine years biologically younger even after discounting other influences, such as body mass index (BMI) and smoking. Those who exercise regularly are at significantly lower risk of cardiovascular disease, type two diabetes, all types of cancer, high blood pressure and obesity, says Dr Lynn Cherkas, who conducted the research. The body becomes much more efficient at defending itself and regenerating new cells. 8. SAVE THE PLANET Twenty bicycles can be parked in the same space as one car. It takes around five percent of the materials and energy used to make a car to build a bike, and a bike produces zero pollution. Bikes are efficient, too you travel around three times as fast as walking for the same amount of energy and, taking into account the fuel you put in your engine, you do the equivalent of 2,924 miles to the gallon. You Cycling while pregnant will help both mother and baby have your weight ratio to thank: you re about six times heavier than your bike, but a car is 20 times heavier than you. 9. CYCLING IMPROVES YOUR SEX LIFE Being more physically active improves your vascular health, which has the knock-on effect of boosting your sex drive, according to health experts in the US. One study from Cornell University also concluded that male athletes have the sexual prowess of men two to five years younger, with physically fit females delaying the menopause by a similar amount of time. Meanwhile, research carried out at Harvard University found that men aged over 50 who cycle for at least three hours a week have a 30 percent lower risk of impotence than those who do little exercise. 10. IT S GOOD BREEDING A bun in the oven could benefit from your riding as much as you. According to research from Michigan University in the US, mums-to-be who regularly exercise during pregnancy have an easier, less complicated labour, recover faster and enjoy better overall mood throughout the nine months. Your pride and joy also has a 50 percent lower chance of becoming obese and enjoys better inutero neurodevelopment. There s no doubt that moderate exercise such as cycling during pregnancy helps condition the mother and protect the foetus, says Patrick O Brien, a spokesman for the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. 11. HEAL YOUR HEART Studies from Purdue University in the US have shown that regular cycling can cut your risk of heart disease by 50 percent. And according to the British Heart Foundation, around 10,000 fatal heart attacks could be avoided each year if people kept themselves fitter. Cycling just 20 miles a week reduces your risk of heart disease to less than half that of those who take no exercise, it says. 12. YOUR BOSS WILL LOVE YOU No, we don t mean your Lycra-clad buttocks will entice your superiors into a passionate office romance, but they ll appreciate what cycling does for your usefulness to the company. A study of 200 people carried out by the University of Bristol found that employees who exercised before work or at lunchtime improved their time and workload management, and it boosted their motivation and their ability to deal with stress. The study also reported that workers who exercised felt their interpersonal performance was better, they took fewer breaks and found it easier to finish work on time. Sadly, the study didn t find a direct link between cycling and getting a promotion. 13. CYCLE AWAY FROM THE BIG C There s plenty of evidence that any exercise is useful in warding off cancer, but some studies have shown that cycling is specifically good for keeping your cells in working order. One long-term study carried out by Finnish researchers found that men who exercised at a moderate level for at least 30 minutes a day were half as likely to develop cancer as those who didn t. And

Other studies have found that women who cycle frequently reduce their risk of breast cancer by 34 percent. 14. LOSE WEIGHT BY RIDING YOUR BIKE Loads of people who want to shift some heft think that heading out for a jog is the best way to start slimming down. But while running does burn a ton of fat, it s not kind to you if you re a little larger than you d like to be. Think about it two to three times your body weight goes crashing through your body when your foot strikes the ground. If you weigh 16 stone, that s a lot of force! instead, start out on a bike most of your weight is taken by the saddle, so your skeleton doesn t take a battering. Running can wait 15. YOU LL MAKE MORE MONEY If you re cycling to lose weight then you could be in line for a cash windfall Well, sort of. Researcher Jay Zagorsky, from Ohio State University, analysed data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth which saw 7,300 people regularly interviewed between 1985 and 2000 to see how their obesity and wealth changed over that period. Zagorsky concluded that a one unit increase in body mass index (BMI) score corresponded to an 800 or eight percent reduction in wealth. So, shed a few BMI points on the bike and start earning. Cyclists breathe in fewer fumes on the street than drivers 16. AVOID POLLUTION You d think a city cyclist would suck up much more pollution than the drivers and passengers in the vehicles chucking out the noxious gases. Not so, according to a study carried out by Imperial College London. Researchers Cycling is something the whole family can do together found that passengers in buses, taxis and cars inhaled substantially more pollution than cyclists and pedestrians. On average, taxi passengers were exposed to more than 100,000 ultrafine particles which can settle in the lungs and damage cells per cubic centimetre. Bus passengers sucked up just under 100,000 and people in cars inhaled about 40,000. Cyclists, meanwhile, were exposed to just 8,000 ultrafine particles per cubic centimetre. It s thought that cyclists breathe in fewer fumes because we ride at the edge of the road and, unlike drivers, aren t directly in the line of exhaust smoke. 17. BIKE RIDING MEANS GUILT-FREE SNACKS Upping your salt intake is seldom your doctor s advice, but in the few days leading up to a big ride, that s exactly what you should do. This gives you the perfect excuse to munch on crisps and other salty foods you might normally avoid. The sodium in them helps protect your body against hyponatraemia, a condition caused by drinking too much water without enough sodium that can lead to disorientation, illness and worse. 18. ENJOY HEALTHY FAMILY TIME Cycling is an activity the whole family can do together. The smallest tyke can clamber into a bike seat or tow-along buggy, and because it s kind on your joints, there s nothing to stop grandparents joining in too. Moreover, your riding habit could be sowing the seeds for the next Bradley Wiggins. Studies have found that, unsurprisingly, kids are influenced by their parents exercise choices. Put simply, if your kids see you riding regularly, they think it s normal and will want to follow your example. Don t be surprised, though, if they become embarrassed by your tendency to mismatch fluorescent Lycra when they become teenagers. 19. GET BETTER AT ANY SPORT Whether you want to keep in prime shape or just improve your weekly tennis game, a stint in the saddle is the way to begin. A recent medical study from Norway carried the title Aerobic Endurance Training Improves Soccer Performance, which makes it pretty clear that the knock-on benefits to other sports and activities are immense. 20. MAKE CREATIVE BREAKTHROUGHS Writers, musicians, artists, top executives and all kinds of other professionals use exercise to solve mental blocks and make decisions including Jeremy Paxman, Sir Alan Sugar and Spandau Ballet. A study found that just 25 minutes of aerobic exercise boosts at least one measure of creative thinking. Credit goes to the flow of oxygen to your grey matter when it matters most, sparking your neurons and giving you breathing space away from the muddle and pressures of real life. 21. YOU RE HELPING OTHERS Many cyclists turn their health, fitness and determination into fundraising efforts for the less fortunate. The London to Brighton bike ride has raised over 40 million for the British Heart Foundation since the two became involved in 1980, with countless other rides contributing to the coffers of worthy causes. 22. According to the National Forum for Coronary Heart Disease Foundation in the US, regular cyclists enjoy a fitness level equal to that of a person who s 10 years younger. 23. BOOST YOUR BELLOWS No prizes for guessing that the lungs work considerably harder than usual when you ride. An adult cycling generally uses 10 times the oxygen they d need to sit in front of the TV for the same period. Even better, regular cycling will help strengthen your cardiovascular system over time, enabling your heart and lungs to work more efficiently and getting more oxygen where it s needed, quicker. This means you can do more exercise for less effort. How good does that sound? Riding regularly will help you burn off the fat 24. There s a direct link between feelings of wellbeing and exercise, and for the first time this study proves the physiological mechanism behind that, explains study co-ordinator Professor Henning Boecker. 27. MAKE FRIENDS AND STAY HEALTHY The social side of riding could be doing you as much good as the actual exercise and health benefits. University of California researchers found socialising releases the hormone oxytocin, which buffers the fight or fiight response. Another nine-year study from Harvard Medical School found those with the most friends cut the risk of an early death by more than 60 percent, reducing blood pressure and strengthening their immune system. GO FOR A RIDE Sounds counter-intuitive but if you feel too tired for a ride, the best thing you can do is go for ride. Physical activity for even a few minutes is a surprisingly effective wake-up call. A review of 12 studies on the link between exercise and fatigue carried out between 1945 and 2005 found that exercise directly lowers fatigue levels. 30. SPEND QUALITY TIME WITH YOUR PARTNER It doesn t matter if your paces aren t perfectly matched, just slow down and enjoy each other s company. Many couples make one or two riding dates every week. And it makes sense: exercise helps release feel-good hormones, so after a ride you ll have a warm feeling towards each other even if he leaves the toilet seat up and her hair is blocking the plughole again.

49 19th October - 15th November 2017 Issue 12 The CBPG Magazine 49 WHAT OUR SKIN SAYS ABOUT US As people get older, skin can often undergo lots of changes and can be a good indicator for not only our skin s health but our general health overall. From spots to dryness to greasy skin, the largest organ in the human body can reveal, stress, hormone changes, sleep deprivation, poor skincare practices and much more besides. 1. GREASY SKIN Some people naturally produce more oil in their skin than others. This is genetic and unfortunately there s nothing that can be done to change this. However, oily skin benefits from oil-free, noncomedogenic products, which means they won t block pores. 2. SPOTS Spots on the face are usually an indication of acne. Acne is caused by the overproduction of oil (sebum), which can combine with dead skin cells to clog up follicles. This, in turn, results in a build-up of oil and produces blackheads or whiteheads. Acne outbreaks can be caused by a range of things including hormone changes, stress, irritants, and oil from cosmetics. If you suffer from spots, look out for products containing salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, which can help stop the blocked pores that lead to spots. All these kind of products are available from the chemist. If this doesn t work after a couple of months, talk to your GP who can prescribe treatments or may refer you to a dermatologist. Myth buster One of the main myths surrounding acne is that it can be caused or worsened by a bad diet and/or poor hygiene but, contrary to common belief, there isn t actually any evidence to support this. The Acne Academy, state on their website: There is no evidence that diet plays a role in acne. Eat a healthy, balanced diet because it is good for your heart and your health in general. However, it will not help your acne. Chocolate and greasy foods are often blamed for causing acne, but there is little evidence for this. Most of the biological reactions that trigger acne occur beneath the skin, not on the surface. This means that how clean your skin is will have little to no effect on your acne. However, it is a good idea to keep your skin clean, using a gentle cleanser on your face twice a day, and washing other areas of your skin once a day. More frequent washing will make no difference to your acne and could make your symptoms worse by aggravating your skin. However, as mentioned above, it is always important to maintain adequate personal hygiene and a healthy diet to support your overall health. And, of course, listen to your own skin as everyone will react differently. 3. SPOTS ON THE CHIN Spots on the chin can be due to hair removal practice, particularly in men where you can get a shaving related folliculitis called folliculitis barbae. This is often due to hair growth pattern on the lower face and the thick hair shaft being curved and turned inwards. This pierces the skin at different angles causing folliculitis or inflammation around the hair follicles. 4. SPOTS ON THE FORE- HEAD AND CHEEKS Spots on the forehead and cheeks can be caused by using greasy skincare products, or even greasy hair products, which spill over on to the forehead and cheeks. Non-comedogenic lotion or even gel-based moisturisers are good for oily acne prone skin. 5. DARK CIRCLES UNDER EYES Dark circles under the eyes often signify sleep deprivation but can be caused by other issues such as hyper pigmentation, particularly in people with darker skin types. The skin around the eyes is susceptible to appearing dark as the skin is so thin in this area. This means that it is easier to see the blood vessels under the skin. When dark circles are due to blood vessels around the eye being prominent, which they often are, then this gives a blue/dark appearance due to a phenomenon called the Tyndall effect. In some cases, pigmentation around the eyes is a familial trait and runs through several generations in families. 6. DRY PATCHES OF SKIN Found in isolation, dry patches of skin often suggest that a moisturiser is needed. You don t need to spend a lot of money to get a good moisturiser, but rather you need one that works for you, and that you are comfortable with regularly applying. Dry skin is also common in a number of skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. It can also indicate an allergy. If you are concerned about any of these skin complaints, speak to your GP. 7. SKIN TINGLING AND NUMBNESS If you suffer from anxiety and panic attacks, it is possible to experience symptoms of these mental health conditions on your skin. It is common for anxiety to cause feelings of numbness and tingling. This can occur almost anywhere on the body but is most commonly felt on the face, hands, arms, feet and legs. This is caused by the blood rushing to the most important parts of the body that can aide fight or flight. This, therefore, leaves the less important areas feeling weak, numb or tingly and can also be caused by hyperventilation and increased oxygen intake (both of which happen when our breathing changes due to anxiety and panic) which is particularly felt in the extremities and the face. Similar sensations, however, can also indicate more serious health conditions so it s wise to visit a GP if you experience this. 8. CHANGING MOLES As we age, many blemishes and bumps can appear on our skin and, while most are often harmless, it is always good to keep an eye out for any changes that may occur especially when it comes to moles. If you have any concerns about your health, always seek advice from a medical professional. IMPORTANT TIPS FOR GOOD HEALTH Health is wealth. It is very well said. Without health nothing can be achieved, nothing can be enjoyed. Health is the most important aspect of one s life. If we have sound health we can have a sound life. An unhealthy body makes you feel deprived of energy, ill and despondent. It swaps all the confidence from a person. A healthy body gives strength, confidence and the energy to take up any challenge life offers. A healthy and fit body can easily manage day-today stresses. When all the functions and systems of the body are working well we conclude that a body is healthy. Maintaining good health is as important as breathing. If you are in poor health and remain ill most of the time, it is high time you started thinking about it. For maintaining a healthy life one has to change one s daily routine. One has to start exercising and following a proper, healthy diet. The diet you choose to follow affects the kind of health you will have. Exercising, meditation, and yoga are other options which can help you stay healthier. Here are some tips for maintaining a healthy body: 1. Your breakfast should be high on fibre. 2. Consumption of tobacco and nicotine should be slowly reduced. Efforts should be made to stop consuming such products. 3. Regular exercising and a small walk after dinner can help you build stronger stamina and a healthy body. 4. Food high on fat and oil should be strictly avoided. Fat and oil increase the cholesterol level in the body. 5. It is always recommended that you eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. These fulfil the body s requirement for nutrients and roughage. 6. The accumulation of fat in the body is the main reason for obesity and many other problems. It is therefore advised to walk after eating dinner. 7. Keeping a positive outlook towards life can surely enhance your efforts for a healthy body. 13. Alcohol if consumed in heavy amounts can pose a greater risk to life than any other thing can do. 14. Antioxidants work against the functioning of free radicals. Vitamins C and E function as free radical removers, so their intake can help maintain your good health. 15. Bone density decreases in women as they reach their 40 s, so calcium and its derived products are essential for them. It is recommended to add calcium in your diet. 16. Iodine is essential for the human body. Its deficiency causes a disease named goitre. Salt is the main source of iodine in body, but some salts do not produce iodine in the required amount, so a salt rich in iodine is essential. 17. Wine helps you fight any heart disease. 18. Oil which is low in trans fat is good for your heart. 19. A sound sleep of at least 7-8 hours can do wonders for your health. There is no substitute for a good sleep. 20.
