We lived in South Cambridgeshire for over 25 years, Mark, working exclusively within the legal and property sectors. Mark held senior positions in Barrister Chambers both in London and Cambridge. In addition, Mark ran a successful property business before selling it in Jayne is a qualified Foot Health Practitioner and in addition to running a successful practice also found the time to become a qualified bus driver! She is currently working on a semi-autobiographical book. We relocated to Southern Spain in the Autumn of 2017 and were keen to explore business opportunities here. In April 2017 we entered into a franchise agreement with Casas Espania, a well-established, family run, real estates, with 3 offices located along the Orihuela Coast at La Siesta, La Zenia and Los Alcazares. Having identified our business premises, they required a complete reformation. We opened the doors to our office in the heart of Pinar de Campoverde in August Introducing Casas Espania s latest office in Pinar de Campoverde! We have been amazed at how friendly and supportive the local community have been in welcoming us. We are extremely fortunate that our area contains a broad range of types of property including well established Villas, coastal apartments and inland Fincas. In addition to an increasing selection of new build apartments and villas, each week another crane appears! We are located within the centre of the golfing community with the Spanish Golf Course of the Year 2017 at Las Colinas and Spanish Golf Course of the Year 2018 at Lo Romero both within our area. We have a large selection of properties with prices ranging from 50,000 to in excess of 3,000,000 so there really is something for every budget. We are less than a 2.5 hour flight from the UK to either Alicante airport or the new Murcia International airport located at Corvera. All our resale properties are listed directly with the owners and as well as being advertised on our website they are actively marketed in each of our 4 offices. We also have the benefit of long-standing collaborating agreements with agents in the UK, Scandinavia, Russia, Europe and Middle East. In addition, over 20 agents along the Costa Blanc/ Costa Calida take our XML property feeds. Being part of a multi office business we have access to clients who have registered an interest in purchasing in this area. Each Friday the Head Office sends out an providing details of all the latest listings, currently this is received by over 7,000 potential buyers. We also advertise on the popular Property websites. We are excited to be attending A Place in the Sun Live the leading property exhibition in Manchester from 15th-17th March 2019 where we look forward to discussing with potential buyers their requirements. These exhibitions are an important element of our advertising policy as they provide an opportunity to arrange viewing trips with qualified leads. Out of nowhere, a Guardia Civil officer steps into the road, right arm up, left arm pointing at you to pull over... You love Spain, you bought a home in this country and pay taxes here. What can be wrong? Several minutes later you get a ticket ( 1,500) because you had not realised that your car insurance had expired. An innocent mistake, perhaps, but this reason will not be enough to avoid paying the ticket. This is exactly what could happen if you missed the deadline to pay your Non-Resident tax. Please read through this article that we ve written to help you understand how Non- Resident taxes work. What Group are you in? If you have bought a property in Spain you will fall within one of the following three Groups: i) Investor, to rent out (not having your Residency Card) ii) Holiday home owner (not having your Residency Card) iii) Permanent home owner (having your Spanish Residency Card) If you fall within Groups i) and ii), keep reading please! i) Are you a Spanish Fiscal Resident? You are a Spanish Fiscal Resident if you a) Live more than 183 days per calendar year in a Spanish Territory (and have previously applied for Spanish Residency), or b) You are a Fiscal Non-Resident. However, both Non- Resident and Resident property owners in Spain are obliged to file an Annual Tax Return the Spanish Tax system operates via Self Assessment. What is the Spanish Tax year? The fiscal year in Spain begins on the 1st January each year and ends on the 31st December. Spanish fiscal non-resident annual tax returns are declared in arrears and hence are submitted the following year. How much tax will you have to pay? There are two main Categories: i) Non-residents from non-eu member states or non-eea countries are required to declare income earned in Spain at a general rate of 24%. In either of the above Categories, the general rule for fiscal residents is that tax is based on your gross Spanish source of notional income (ie the benefit from having an asset), net rental income, or on any capital gains arising from assets located in Spain disposed of. You are a non-resident and a property owner. What tax should you pay? Before we explore this, there is an important rule to keep in mind. When a property is owned by more than one person, each party will be an independent taxpayer who must submit a separate tax return. Income tax payable will depend on the usage of the property: i) Notional income tax on a property used for private purposes. Let us say you were not the owner of your property for the whole year in this case you would only pay the notional tax on the period of ownership. This same formula would apply if you rent your property out. Notional income tax is calculated according to a calendar year (ie 1st January 31st December, or part thereof). ii) Income tax on property which is rented out. The rule here is: non-resident property owners who rent out their property are obliged to declare the total amount received and are taxed on their Net Income (ie Gross rental income less allowable expenses). Unlike Notional income, this tax is declared quarterly as follows: 1st 20th April (Q1); 1st 20th July (Q2); 1st 20th Oct (Q3); and 1st 20th Jan (Q4). Have YOU any questions on nonresident taxes? Staying on top of the latest currency news can help you time your transfers more effectively, so find out what you should be looking out for over the next couple of weeks Latest currency news The pound has found support in recent weeks, despite Brexit uncertainty only appearing to have heightened in in the last month. This upswing in Sterling has seen GBP/ EUR climb from 1.11 to around 1.13 over the last month. At the same time, the GBP/USD exchange rate has risen from $1.26 to $1.28, although it also briefly plummeted to a 20-month low of $1.24 on the way. What s been happening? While it has remained volatile, the pound has consistently risen so far in 2019, largely on the back of diminishing fears of a no-deal Brexit. This comes despite Theresa May s Brexit deal being overwhelming rejected by Parliament as markets hope that MPs will now exert more authority over the process potentially pushing to stop Brexit altogether. Meanwhile a run of gloomy data and fears that some of the Eurozone s largest economies may be headed towards a recession has seen the euro struggle in recent weeks. The US dollar has also given up ground this month following a number of dovish signals from the Federal Reserve, with the US central bank now expected to adopt a more cautious approach to monetary policy in What do you need to look out for? Brexit is expected to continue to dominate the pound over the coming month, with a potential extension to Article 50 likely to propel Sterling higher. It comes after the Commons emphatically voted down Mrs May s deal with the European Union on Tuesday evening. Leader of the House, Andrea Leadsom, said the Prime Minister would put forward a motion and make a statement on her next steps on Monday. A full day s debate on the motion will take place on Tuesday, 29 January, subject to the agreement of the house, Ms Leadsom told Parliament. After MPs have voted, there will be just 59 days before the UK is due to leave the EU. The Prime Minister survived a no confidence vote brought by Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn on Wednesday before vowing to continue with Support for Remain highest since referendum, Brexit poll finds Brexit negotiations. In Downing Street last night she declared it is time for finding a way forward and invited MPs from all parties to try to achieve a breakthrough, saying it was time to put self interest aside. Theresa May says MPs must work together to deliver Brexit. She will announce her Plan B after meeting with a variety of opposition parties in the coming days. Mrs May has already held talks with Lib Dem leader Sir Vince Cable, SMP Westminster leader Ian Blackford and Plaid Cymru s Liz Saville-Roberts late on Wednesday in a bid to get a Parliamentary consensus. But Jeremy Corbyn said he would not even sit down with her until she agrees to kill off the threat of a no-deal Brexit. In a speech in Hastings on Thursday, the Labour leader dismissed the Prime Minister s crossparty talks as a stunt. Last night s offer of talks with party leaders turned out to be simply a stunt, not the serious attempt to engage with the new reality that is needed, he said. He added: I say to the Prime Minister again: I am quite happy to talk but the starting point for any talks about Brexit must be that the threat of a disastrous no-deal outcome is ruled out, taken off the table, and we can talk about the future of the plans that we will put forward and the future relationship with Europe. In a direct message to Mrs May, Mr Corbyn said: Take no-deal off the table now please Prime Minister. He also repeated that all options remained on the table, including a second referendum, saying: Given the severity of the crisis it would be wrong to rule any of them out. It came as a snap poll Jeremy Corbyn dismissed the PM s offer of cross-party talks as a stunt conducted in the wake of the PM s crushing defeat on her Brexit plan found a 12-point lead for remaining in the EU, the largest margin since the referendum. The YouGov survey of more than 1,000 voters found 56 per cent would now vote to stay in the EU, against 44 per cent who want to leave. Do yoga, run, lift weights, cut the carbs, or the fat (depending on the particular diet that s in vogue), ditch the booze, reduce your stress. It is easy to feel like your life needs to be overhauled in order to be a healthy, happy human being. But what if you were to make only one change? We asked experts what single thing they would recommend people should do to improve their health, assuming they are an adult who is otherwise healthy and not a smoker. Focus on the mind It is easy to only think about our physical health. But according to Dr Nadine Sammy, associate lecturer for sport and exercise sciences at the University of Exeter, we should also be focusing on improving our minds by building self-awareness. You might think of this as something that prevents us from embarrassing ourselves, but, according to Dr Sammy, it is much more than this. Self-awareness is the ability to recognise and understand your moods, emotions and drives, and building it can play a crucial role in improving mental and physical wellbeing over time. By understanding your feelings, motivations and behaviours in more depth, you can begin to act more consciously in order to make better choices for yourself, she says. For instance, what is your motivation to exercise? When are you most - and when Building self-awareness, through things like meditation, can boost our mental and physical wellbeing are you least - likely to stick to your exercise routine and why? There are many ways to do this, she says, including journaling, meditating, practicing mindfulness or simply making time for self-reflection after certain activities or at the end of the day. Better understanding ourselves allows us to play to our strengths and build on our weaknesses, thereby spurring us on to be our best self, she adds. Adopt a dog A gym membership, a Pilates class, or a morning run - just some of the things that might come to mind when we think of becoming physically more active. But though going to the gym works for some of us, many will quit after a month or two, says Dr Rhys Thatcher, a reader in exercise physiology at Aberystwyth University. Instead, he recommends finding ways to routinely incorporate exercise into our daily lives.there are plenty of ways to do this, from avoiding the lifts at work to parking on the far side of a supermarket car park when you are doing the shopping. But there are particular benefits to adopting a dog, he says. If you make sure to walk it for at least 30 minutes twice a day, you will be boosting your activity while also getting the emotional benefits of dog adoption. This way you get to spend time outside, you get to exercise, you get a loyal companion and at the same time you get to improve the life of another living thing, all of which have been shown to improve physical and mental health, says Dr Thatcher. Get your 30 a week We have all heard about getting our five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. But according to Dr Megan Rossi, a research fellow at King s College London s department of nutritional sciences, it is not only quantity we should be striving for, but also diversity. We should aim for at least 30 different plantbased foods per week, she says. That is because plant-based diversity is thought to have a key role in good gut health. The bacteria in our gut - collectively known as the microbiome - have a profound role in our health. Allergies, obesity, inflammatory bowel disease, Parkinson s, and even depression have all been linked to the bacteria in our gut. One way we can get more plant-based diversity in our diets easily is by being a little savvier about some of the foods we purchase, says Dr Rossi. Instead of just buying chickpeas go for the four-bean mix. Instead of buying one type of seed buy the four-seed mix, she says. Smile more often After the excesses of the holiday season, many of us will be planning to lose a couple of stone or setting a target for how many times we go to the gym each week. Even being mildly deprived of it (five hours a night) can affect a range of cognitive functions, including decision making, says Dr Gavin Buckingham, senior lecturer in sport and health sciences at the University of Exeter. There are lots of things we can do to get a better night s sleep, from avoiding caffeine too close to bed to having a consistent bedtime. But Dr Buckingham s top tip is to stop using electronic devices like phones and laptops well before bedtime or at least put on a filter that blocks the blue light in them. Do not spend so much time focusing on arbitrary matters, do something that makes you smile instead

But there s a bit more to it than that: unlike other brandies, cognac must be made from specific grapes, usually ugni blanc, distilled twice (but only between November and March each time) and aged at least two years in Tronçais or Limousin oak barrels. The real reason why Spaniards eat late Many travellers believe Spain s late mealtimes are a reflection of the country s laidback attitude, but that couldn t be further from the truth. While travellers might attribute Spain s late mealtimes to the country s laidback Mediterranean attitude, the real reason is a little more peculiar. The time difference results in long summer evenings and 10pm sunsets Being 60 minutes behind the correct time zone means the sun rises later and sets later, bestowing Spain with gloriously long summer evenings and 10pm sunsets. Those who run Spain s tourist resorts believe that more sunlight is a large draw for visitors. The regional government of the Balearic Islands which include Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza is strongly against returning to GMT and has even campaigned to maintain year-round summer time (CET+1) to allow visitors to take full advantage of the region s mild winter climate. But for many Spaniards, living in the wrong time zone has resulted in sleep deprivation and decreased productivity. The typical Spanish work day begins at 9am; after a two-hour lunch break between 2 and 4pm, employees return to work, ending their day around 8pm. The later working hours force Spaniards to save their social lives for the late hours. Prime-time television doesn t start until 10:30pm. Meanwhile, in the north western region of Galicia, the sun doesn t rise until after 9am in winter, meaning that residents are starting their day in the dark. The fact that the time in Spain doesn t correspond to the sun affects health, especially sleep, said José Luis Casero, president of the National Commission for the Rationalization of Spanish Schedules, an organisation that has been campaigning for Spain to return to the correct time zone since If we changed time zones, the sun would rise one hour earlier and we d wake up more naturally, meal times would be one hour earlier and we d get an extra hour s sleep. Spaniards have traditionally coped with their late nights by taking a mid-morning coffee break and a two-hour lunch break, giving them the opportunity to enjoy one of the country s most famous traditions: the siesta. It doesn t fit with reality. Changing the workday would threaten Spaniards customary naptime, although whether or not citizens would mind is still up for debate. A January 2017 study by research company Simple Lógica found that less than 18% of Spaniards nap regularly, while nearly 60% never take a siesta. In fact, business owners in many of the country s major cities and holiday resorts remain open during the midday break to cater to tourists. Changing the workday would threaten Spaniards customary siesta Meanwhile, those who do nap express frustration when changes in their daily routine prevent them from sleeping mid-day. We should really banish the siesta in Spain because it doesn t fit with reality, Casero said. And with the change of time zone bringing meal times forward and giving us an extra hour of sleep, there would be less need for a rest at midday. When it comes down to it, economist Nuria Chinchilla, an expert in work-life balance at the Instituto de Estudios Superiores de la Empresa business school in Barcelona, feels that quality of life for Spaniards is more pressing than preserving an extra hour or two of evening light for tourists. We have continuous jetlag, she said. Tourism will always be there and tourists don t care. The number of hours of sunlight will be the same, whether it is an extra hour in the morning or in the evening. Can we cheat ageing? By Diego Arguedaz Ortiz, Beth Sagar Fenton and Helena Merriman All around the world, scientists are trying to beat the most debilitating condition known to humans: ageing. Here is how worms and 3D printers can help. As she headed to her lab one sunny Texan morning, molecular biologist Meng Wang couldn t yet guess what would be waiting for her when she arrived: tens of thousands of worms, wriggling around in different boxes. As she peered into each box, slowly it dawned on her. What she saw could cure the most debilitating condition known to humanity: ageing. Diseases related to ageing like cancer, rheumatism and Alzheimer s kill 100,000 people every day around the world. But a growing number of scientists say it doesn t have to be this way. BBC World Service podcast The Inquiry quizzed some of the world s leading researchers about the nature of ageing and about the cuttingedge science that could cure it, from the role of microbiomes to 3D-printed organs. More and more scientists are saying that we can beat ageing-related diseases Long tooth What exactly is ageing? If you could zoom into the molecular level, you would see small, incremental amounts of damage that spreads to the cells, the tissue and the organs. Eventually, the whole organism starts to suffer from this ongoing Russian-doll style accumulation of damage. Then when we can t keep up with the repairing, the ageing starts explains Danish physician Kaare Christensen. Christensen worked as a doctor for many years until one day he decided he d had enough of treating sick people. He now runs the Danish Aging Research Centre where he s trying to stop people getting ill in the first place. He points out that we ve seen some progress. In the mid-1800s life expectancy was around 40 years in most of the world, he says, while now some countries of Northern Europe are nearing 80 years and the rest of the planet is catching up. This was largely because of the reduction in infant and child mortality, not because the human life span itself increased. Even so, there has been another, promising change at the same time. People arrive at higher ages in better shape now, says Christensen. One easy thing to observe is, for instance, teeth. You can see that the teeth of elderly people are getting better and better for every decade. Teeth are a sort of barometer of general health, he says. Their condition directly affects our ability to eat properly and gain nourishment. Their fitness can also indicate whether other parts of the body are in good shape. Christensen says that people are not only reaching old age with better teeth, but also with higher results in IQ tests, which he links to improved livelihoods around the world. That s the whole package of better living conditions, better schooling and what kind of work you have had, he says. He believes that this progress will continue. But for how long? People arrive at higher ages healthier now and their teeth show it The record for the world s longest recorded lifespan currently belongs to Frenchwoman Jeanne Louise Calment, who reached 122 years of age. What s interesting is that she died in 1997 more than 20 years ago. Many things have happened since. Organ printing Biophysicist Tuhin Bhowmick comes from a family of medics in Bangalore, India, and remembers dinner conversations about patients his father or uncles could not save. Whenever he asked why they were not able to prevent a death, his father would reply they had run out of tricks up their sleeve. Medicine, after all, had its limits. I was like, Okay, then I won t become a doctor, but I ll become somebody who makes the medicine, remembers Bhowmick. He says death by old age often relates to malfunctions with vital organs like the heart, the

If the patient is able to receive a functional organ from a donor, medics like Bhowmick s father can give people a second lease of life. But that s not always the case. The problem is that there are more people in need of organs than donors able to give them. Elderly people all over the world are in long queues for new kidneys or hearts, but exact matches have to be found. In many cases, the person dies waiting. Instead of holding out for a donor organ, Bhowmick thought, what if you could make one? This question kick started his quest to print a functioning organ that patients bodies would not reject. Let s say you need a liver and you have CT scan or you have MRI which shows exact size and shape of your organ in the computer, he says. You could feed that mould to a 3D printer and print an artificial one in exactly the same size and shape. Instead of using an ink cartridge, though, Bhowmick s devices use ink made up of protein and cells and not just any cells, but the patient s own cells. This means there is very little chance that the body would reject the new organ. His team already has made India s first artificial human liver tissue; the next step is to scale it up, making a miniature external liver, a checkpoint that he estimates might be five years away. Bhowmick imagines this external organ as a small and portable out-of-the-body device, so users can move around with it. In eight to 10 years, he expects to reach the promised land: a point where he can make a fully functioning liver that can be transplanted inside a body. But if a person has got a failing organ, does that indicate that perhaps they re coming to the end of a natural lifespan? What if the heart and lungs also fail? Bhowmick believes each case is different. If you replace an organ which has been the primary cause of the patient s death, that patient could have lived for 20 more years because maybe that person s liver was failing, but not the same with the brain or the heart, he says. One scientist estimates that millennials could live to 135 His bet for how long we can live? With these types of innovations, he says, if you are a millennial or younger born by 1981 or later you could have a good shot at lifespan of 135 years. Worm wisdom Meng Wang s grandmother passed away when she was aged 100; she was healthy and active to the end of her life. Watching her grow older, all while remaining sound, made Wang wonder about the secrets of ageing. Wang is now a professor of molecular and human genetics at Baylor College of Medicine in the US, where she s been carrying out experiments into one of the most exciting new areas of medicine our microbiome. Those are the little microorganisms living together with us, from the digestive tract inside our body to the skin outside our body, she says. So, they re everywhere. You can t see it with the naked eye, but our microbiome is all over (and inside of) us. Most of it is bacteria, but it also contains fungi, viruses and other microbes, too. In the past, scientists haven t given it much attention. But we now know it has a profound effect on our body. Recent studies show that our microbiome is as relevant to us as an additional organ might be. It can influence how we behave and even how well we respond to different medications. Sometimes [our microbiomes] make us sick, but on the other hand, they also play a very important role to keep us healthy, says Wang. She wanted to know whether our microbiome could affect ageing. To test it, she decided to work with a particular kind of worm that lives only two to three weeks a lifespan short enough to conduct a life-long experiment on ageing. Her question was what would happen if you altered a worm s microbiome. Would the Could our microbiome be the key to ageing? worm live longer? Wang chose one of the kinds of bacteria that lives inside a worm s gut, tweaked its genes to make different varieties, and then fed the bacteria to separate groups of worms. Three weeks later by the time they should have all died she checked on Some research suggests that tweaking our microbiome could keep us active longer in life them. I was so excited because we found in a few cases the animals were not dead, she remembers. They were still alive when we checked them. I was jumping up and down because it was totally unexpected. Older worms usually show a decline in physical activity, but the ones with the new microbiome not only wriggled around more quickly in their old age, but were less susceptible to disease too. Wang is now carrying out tests on mice to see whether changing their microbiome extends their lives in a similar way. There s a chance that one day doctors might be able to prescribe pills which do the same for us. How long could that make us live? Some of my colleagues say, Okay, you know, I think people can live to 200, 300 years, says Wang. Personally, I think, you know, 100 is already a good number. Cell-by date Something odd happens when you age. As cells gets older, they divide to replace cells that are dying or getting worn out, but this is not a perfect process. The more times a cell divides, the greater it s chance of becoming what we would call senescent. Senescence comes from the Latin word senescere to grow old. And that s exactly what s happened to these cells they ve grown old and come to the end of their lifecycle. But instead of dying, they hang around, acting in a destructive manner and communicating with cells around them. That can cause a lot of trouble. It s almost like the cell saying I m an old cell and you guys have been around here about the same sort of amount of time as I have, so you must be old too, says Lorna Harries, professor of molecular genetics at England s University of Exeter. These senescent cells are almost contaminating other cells with age and as we grow older, more and more of our cells become senescent until our body is overwhelmed. In her lab, Harries might have found a way to deal with these ageing hooligans. Some time ago, Harries suggested that a new researcher she was working with try putting some chemicals on old skin cells to see what would happen. To test the skin cell s age when the experiment ran its course, they applied a particular dye that would turn cells blue if they were senescent. What I was expecting to see is that the cells would be still blue and still looking old, says Harries. And actually they weren t they had gone back to looking more like young cells. She didn t believe the result, so she asked the student to repeat the experiment. Again and again, she came back with the same result and again Harries sent her back to redo the process. The researcher repeated it about nine times, Harries As we age, more of our cells signal to other cells that they, too, should get older One recent experiment effectively reversed ageing in human cells recalls. Finally, I kind of looked at it and thought Actually, maybe you re onto something here. The experiment effectively rejuvenated old cells and turned them into young cells, making hers the first experiment ever to have reversed ageing in human cells. Some think the discovery could be the secret to a much longer life. Harries started receiving phone calls from investors and scientists around the world. But Harries still isn t very bullish about how long could we live; she believes humans have a natural maximum lifespan. Even so, she hopes her line of research ends up in a new generation of antidegenerative drugs for things like dementia and cardiovascular disease. What I m hoping is that this will allow us one treatment which will address several of those at once, so that people who would have died early will then go on to live their natural allotted lifespan, says Harries. So back to the question: how long could we live? Perhaps one day we will be able to replace our damaged organs, take supplements that give us a youthful microbiome and stop our cells from ageing. How many years could all this add on? If we go by Tuhin Bhowmick s prediction, if you re a millennial, you may be able to get to 135. And by the time we re there in 2116, if you were born in 1981 who knows what else will be possible?

The Chinese drama Story of Yanxi Palace is the most Googled TV show of 2018 globally, despite Google being largely blocked in the country. The search engine s analytics suggested that the top interest in the drama has come from Asian regions like Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei and Hong Kong, but its popularity in mainland China has been overwhelming as well. The series has been streamed more than 15 billion times on iqiyi, China s Netflixlike site where the show premiered in July before it reached domestic TV channels and more than 70 markets abroad. It was the most watched online drama in China for 39 consecutive days over the summer. The 70-episode Story of Yanxi Palace fictionalised the power struggles among the concubines of The Story of Yanxi Palace revolves around its female protagonist, Wei Yingluo Emperor Qianlong in the 1700s. The protagonist, a smart girl with a humble background, manages to rise through the ranks among the harem and wins both love and respect from the emperor. Its theme may be likened to a Cinderella tale or Netflix s The Crown that chronicles the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. But its own uniqueness has made it the undisputed entertainment sensation of the year. Here s how it took over China and its neighbouring regions. It catches up with a trend of feminist shows The heroine of the show, Wei Yingluo, is unlike most traditional Chinese female characters who are taught to be tolerant, submissive and fragile. Inspired by the actual real-life consort of Emperor Qianlong, the story follows Yingluo as a woman of Chinese Han ethnicity in the Qing dynasty - the last imperial dynasty in China ruled by the Manchurian ethnicity that suppressed the Han people. But her intelligence, determination and appropriate ferocity meant she was eventually granted her the title of imperial noble consort, the highest possible position for a Han person at that time. Yingluo s most famous line from the show goes like this : I, Wei Yingluo, am naturally hottempered and not to be pushed around. Whoever keeps talking [nonsense], I have all kinds of methods to go against her. Kelly Grovier reveals eight examples from paintings including The Scream and The Kiss. What do the greatest paintings and sculptures in cultural history from Girl with a Pearl Earring to Picasso s Guernica, from the Terracotta Army to Edvard Munch s The Scream have in common? Each is hardwired with an underappreciated, indeed often overlooked, detail that ignites its meaning from deep inside. That, at least, is the premise of my new book, A New Way of Seeing: The History of Art in 57 Works, a study that invites readers to reconnect with works that are so familiar we no longer really see them. Taking as my starting point the most revered images in all of human history (from Trajan s Column to American Gothic, the Elgin Marbles to Matisse s The Dance), Han empress during the Manchu-reigned dynasty. The show comes as the latest example of how feminist-themed soap operas have captured Chinese audiences. Other shows like The Legend of Zhenhuan - another imperial risingup-the-ranks story bought by Netflix - and The Empress of China, that tells the story of the only female emperor in Chinese history, have also taken off in China. It didn t face much censorship Before the show aired on TV screens, it was Wei Yingluo started off as a servant in the palace but slowly worked her way up shown online. The coproducer and initial distributor of the series, iqiyi, is one of China s most popular online video platforms - helping the show gain large traffic and, more importantly, easier regulatory scrutiny for its debut. In China, the National Radio and I went looking for what makes great art great why some works continue to vibrate in popular imagination century after century, while the vast majority of artistic creations slip our consciousness almost as quickly as we encounter them. Combing the surface of these works, I was surprised to discover that each contains a flourish of strangeness which, once spotted, unlocks exciting new readings and changes forever the way we engage with these masterpieces. As these remarkable details began to reveal themselves, from a ghostly finger fidgeting on Mona Lisa s right hand to a tarot symbol for fortitude hiding in plain sight in one of Frida Kahlo s most mysterious The detailed costumes and intricate sets won over audiences Television Administration oversees all content on radio and television. A TV project has to obtain the go-ahead from it even before shooting starts. When video sites emerged a few years ago, they could publish anything as long as they thought it was within the regulator s rules. In 2016, an online series featuring gay love went viral but was taken off in the middle of the streaming season. A year later, a a ban on homosexual content was issued. Online video platforms can t broadcast shows at will but the censorship they go through is much lighter than TV channels, which are mostly owned by the government. Gong Yu, founder and CEO of iqiyi, said the company had deliberately cast self-portraits, I was reminded of a remark by Charles Baudelaire. Beauty, the French poet and critic wrote in 1859, always contains a touch of strangeness, of simple, unpremeditated and unconscious strangeness. What follows is a brief digest of some of the more extraordinary details touches of strangeness that invigorate, often subliminally, many of the most recognisable images in art history. The Bayeux Tapestry (c or after) lesser known actors... rejecting recent trends in the Chinese industry that put too much emphasis of the celebrity appeal of actors in their productions. It came at an essential time when Chinese celebrities high income and ambiguous tax practices had caught the attention of the authorities. So if you ve never heard of Yanxi Palace, you could try Googling it - you wouldn t be the first! The forgotten women who, a millennium ago, embroidered the 70m of cloth on which the Bayeux Tapestry chronicles the events that led to the Norman Conquest, were not just exquisite seamstresses, they were exceptional storytellers. A perfect logarithmic curl, this is no incidental ornament or accident of brushwork. The same spinning vector, observable in the plunge of raptor birds and the twist of nautilus shells, has hypnotised thinkers since antiquity. In the 17th Century, a Swiss mathematician, Jacob Bernoulli, would eventually christen the curl spira mirabilis, or marvellous spiral. In Botticelli s painting a work that celebrates timeless elegance the inscrutable spiral whispers into Venus s right ear, divulging to her the very secrets of truth and beauty. Hieronymus Bosch, The Garden of Earthly Delights ( ) That an egg lies hidden in plain sight at the dead centre of Hieronymus Bosch s carnival of fleshly shenanigans (balanced atop a horseman s head) is well enough known by critics and casual admirers of the painting alike. But how does that delicate detail unlock the work s truest meaning? If we swing shut the triptych s side panels to reveal the work s outer shell and the ghostly ovoid of a fragile world that Bosch has depicted on the work s exterior a translucent orb floating in the ether we discover that he conceived his painting as a kind of egg endlessly to be cracked and uncracked every time we engage with the complex work. By opening and closing Bosch s painting, we alternately set a fledgling world in motion or turn the hand of time back to before the beginning, before our innocence was lost. Johannes Vermeer, Girl with a Pearl Earring (c. 1665) Think you see a pearl dangling lustrously in Vermeer s famous portrait of a girl endlessly turning towards or away from us? Think again. The swollen bauble around which the painting s mystery spins is just a pigment of your imagination. With a flick of the wrist and two deft dabs of white paint, the artist has tricked the primary visual cortices of our brains occipital lobes into magicking a pearl from the thinnest of air. Squint as tight as you wish and there is no loop that links the ornament to her ear. Its very sphericity is a hoax. We ve willed the earring into weightless suspension from the puniest of white apostrophes. Vermeer s precious gem is an opulent optical illusion, one that reflects back on our own illusory presence in the world. JMW Turner, Rain, Steam, and Speed The Great Western Railway (1844) It s no secret that Turner secreted a sprinting hare in the murky path of the approaching locomotive. The artist himself pointed it out to a little boy who visited the Royal Academy on varnishing day just as the work was about to go on show. But how does this tiny detail ignite the meaning of Turner s huge meditation on encroaching technology? Why did he feel compelled to point it out? Since antiquity the hare has symbolised rebirth and hope. The emotions of visitors who saw the painting when it was first exhibited in 1844 were still raw with the horror of a tragedy that had occurred on Christmas Eve two and a half years earlier, when a train derailed 10 miles from the bridge depicted in the painting an accident that killed nine third-class commuters and maimed another 16. By going small in the emblem of the hare, an artist famous for going big transforms his painting into a poignant tribute and meditation on the fragility of life. Georges Seurat, Bathers at Asnières (1884) The large painting of Parisians whiling away a lazy lunch hour on the banks of the river Seine, the first work ever exhibited by Seurat, was initially finished in It was then touched up by the artist years later, after he had begun to perfect his signature technique of applying small distinct dots that cohere in the eye of the observer when seen at a distance. The colour theory that underpins Seurat s more mature pointillist style owes its origin in part to the ideas of a French chemist, Michel Eugène Chevreul, who explained how the juxtaposition of hues can generate a persistence of tone in our imagination. In the hazy distance of Seurat s painting, a row of smokestacks rise from a factory that produced candles according to an industrial innovation for which Chevreul was also responsible. These chimneys, which seem more like paintbrushes daubing the work into existence, are a tribute to the thinker without whom Seurat s resplendent vision would not have been possible. Edvard Munch, The Scream (1893) It has long been assumed that the howling figure in Edvard Munch s The Scream an archetype of angst that still flickers above the popular imagination more than a century after it was created was indebted chiefly to the aghast expression frozen on the face of a Peruvian mummy that the artist encountered at the 1889 Universal Exposition in Paris. But Munch was an artist concerned more about the future than the past, and especially anxious about the pace of technology. Surely he would have been even more deeply impressed Rolls-Royce boasts an impressive history of innovation in the aerospace industry, and central to its continued propulsion in this area is the evolution of the jet engine. But what is a jet engine, and how exactly does it work? In basic terms, it is a type of reaction engine that generates thrust by jet propulsion, says Bethany Hall, one of the engineering giant s new electrical engineering graduates who is currently driving internal innovation activities for electrification. Rolls-Royce launched the Welland, the first production jet engine in Britain, in the early 1940s; but the organisation had been making piston by the breath-taking spectacle of an enormous lightbulb filled with 20,000 smaller bulbs that stood on a pedestal and towered over the pavilion in the same Exposition? A tribute to the ideas of Thomas Edison, the sculpture rose like a crystalline god heralding a new idolatry, flipping a switch in Munch s mind. The contours of The Scream s yowling face reflect with extraordinary precision the drooping jaw and bulbous cranium of Edison s terrifying electric totem. Gustav Klimt, The Kiss (1907) Surely love and passion stand at the furthest extreme from the long white lab coats and microscopic slides of scientific testing. Not according to Gustav Klimt s painting The Kiss. The year he painted his work, Vienna was alive with the language of platelets and blood cells, especially around the University of Vienna where Klimt himself had, years earlier, been invited to create paintings based on medical themes. Karl Landsteiner, a pioneering immunologist at the University (the scientist who first distinguished blood groups) was hard at work attempting to make blood transfusions succeed. Look closer at the curious patterns that throb on the woman s frock in Klimt s painting and one suddenly sees them for what they are: Petri dishes pulsing with cells as if the artist has offered us a scan of her soul. The Kiss is Klimt s luminous biopsy of eternal love. How does a jet engine work? Take a look at the inner workings of one of the most ingenious engineering inventions the jet engine. The turbojet is utilised in military aircraft, because it is less about efficiency and more about going very fast. A turboprop has a large propeller driven by the gas turbine, so you generate the thrust from the rotation of the propeller. And then you have a turboshaft, which can be used to power an electrical generator or helicopter rotors. Jet engines explained Air is sucked into the engine by the big fan blades that you see at the front, explains Ms Hall. The air that s sucked in can go one of two ways some of the air goes through the core engine, whereas most of it is bypassed around the core to provide part of the engine s thrust. The air that goes into How much can a misplaced comma cost you? If you re texting a loved one or dashing off an to a colleague, the cost of misplacing a piece of punctuation will be at worst a red face and a minor mix-up. But for some, contentious commas can be a path to the poor house. A dairy company in the US city of Portland, Maine settled a court case for $5m earlier this year because of a missing comma. Three lorry drivers for Oakhurst Dairy claimed that they were owed years of unpaid overtime wages, all because of the way commas were used in legislation governing overtime payments. The state s laws declared that overtime wasn t due for workers involved in the canning, processing, the core is then squeezed. The compressor is used to increase the pressure of this air, by squeezing it, and then that really high-pressure air has fuel injected into it. It is ignited in the combustor and this produces high-pressure hot gases, which are then recombined with the bypassed air and blown out the back of the engine to produce thrust. As well as this, these hot gases power the turbines which directly drive the fans and compressors. The future is electric Ms Hall, who enjoyed two internships as part of the IET Power Academy Scholarship Programme with Rolls-Royce during her university holidays, says there are six jet engine-design criteria used by Rolls-Royce: provide the required thrust; minimise cost; minimise engine weight; minimise fuel consumption; reduce preserving, freezing, drying, marketing, storing, packing for shipment or distribution of: 1) agricultural produce; 2) meat and fish products; and 3) perishable foods. The drivers managed to successfully argue that because there was no comma after shipment and before or distribution, they were owed overtime pay. If a comma had been there, the law would have explicitly ruled out those who distribute perishable foods. Because there was confusion, the US Court of Appeals ruled in their favour, benefiting around 120 of the firm s drivers. David Webbert, the lawyer who helped bring the case against the company, told emissions; and meet the required timescales. Even today, challenges remain across the industry to make traditional jet engines more energyefficient and sustainable. There is pressure, including from the European Union-backed Clean Sky programme, to reduce our carbon dioxide emissions the target for 2030 is a 75pc reduction across the aircraft as a whole, while aiming for a 30pc reduction in engine fuel, continues Ms Hall. A reduction in noise pollution is also a key driver. All the while, there is also a massive increase in demand for air travel. From 2015 to 2030, there is expected to be a 60pc rise in the number of people that are travelling in the sky, says Ms Hall. This is why it is becoming imperative to switch to electrification, to make air travel cleaner, safer and more efficient. The commas that cost companies millions By Chris Stokel-Walker For most people, a stray comma isn t the end of the world. But in some cases, the exact placement of a punctuation mark can cost huge sums of money. Workers load milk onto trucks at the Oakhurst dairy plant in 2013 reporters at the time that the inclusion of a comma in the clause would have sunk our ship. (He didn t respond to interview requests from the BBC.) Punctuation matters, says Ken Adams, author of A Manual of Style for Contract Drafting. But not all punctuation is made equal: contractual minefields are not seeded with semicolons or em-dashes (here s one: ) waiting to explode when tripped over. It boils down to commas, says Adams. They matter, and exactly how depends on the context. Delivering definition Commas in contracts link separate clauses in a non-definitive way, leaving their reading open to interpretation. While a full stop is literally that a full and complete stop to one thought or sentence, and the signal of the start of another commas occupy a linguistic middle ground, and one that s often muddled. Commas are a proxy for confusion as to what part of a sentence relates to what, Adams explains. Arguments have been fought over the value of so-called Oxford commas (an optional comma before the word and or or at the end of a list). There might be good arguments on either side of the debate, but this doesn t work for the law because there needs to be a definitive answer: yes or no. In high-stakes legal agreements, how commas are deployed is crucial to their meaning. And in the case of Oakhurst Dairy against its delivery drivers, the Oxford comma is judged to have favoured the latter s meaning. But just because you mean to say something, it doesn t mean that a court will agree with you, says Jeff Nobles, a Texasbased appellate lawyer who was involved in an insurance case that hinged, in part, on the punctuation of a contract. According to Nobles, most US courts will say it doesn t really matter what the parties subjectively intended; it s the objective intent in the An 1872 tiff over tariffs and tropical fruit cost taxpayers $40m all caused by a comma written terms of their contract. Punctuation sometimes will change the meaning of a sentence, he says. Nobles represented an insurance company in a Texas Supreme Court case concerning insurance coverage for a worker who died on the job. Nobles argued successfully that punctuation mattered for a contractual indemnity provision, when the company tried to trigger coverage under its umbrella insurance policy after a subcontracted employee died on the job. It set a precedent in the state s legal system, he believes. He says US courts have become increasingly textual they ve looked more and more at the words on the paper rather than the testimony of the people who used those words on the paper. Yet arguments over commas have been raging for more than a century. An An expensive comma In 1872, an American tariff law including an unwanted comma cost taxpayers nearly $2m (the equivalent of $40m today). The United States Tariff Act, as originally drafted in 1870, allowed fruit plants, tropical and semi-tropical for the purpose of propagation or cultivation to be exempt from import tariffs. For an unknown reason, when revised two years later, a stray comma sneaked in between fruit and plants. 49 18th January - 14th February 2019 Issue 27 The CBPG Magazine 49 by Gary and Lynn CYCLOGICAL January 19 from Cyclogical in Quesada LA VUELTA 2019 On Wednesday 19th December, Harry and I were invited guests to the 2019 La Vuelta Presentation in The Auditorium Provincial in the centre of Alicante - the 74th edition of La Vuelta. We arrived at 7pm sharp and presented our passes to the stewards at the door and made our way to the grand foyer where everyone was gathering. After a few handshakes and a picture or two, we made our way into the main auditorium where the presentation started at 7.30pm with a 15 minute video showing all the stages that have taken place in the Costa Blanca region in previous years. There were many speeches from various people including Simon Yates who was last year s winner. It was Simon s first grand tour victory with Spain s Enric Mas finishing second and Columbia s Miguel Lopez in 3rd place. Simon did a really nice talk about his experiences and the stages of last year s event (the only part of the whole evening that was in English!). All of the 21 stages for the 2019 La Vuelta were then revealed - the most important one for us was the start, which will be an 18km Team Time Trial starting at Las Salinas in Torrevieja on Saturday 24th August. The final stage will be 105km from Fuenlabrada to Madrid on Sunday 15th September with 3,272km of racing in between! There are 59 climbs this year - 13 more than last year and a mountainous second stage starts in Benidorm heading back towards Calpe. It was great to hear about, and see all of the stages on the large screen and also to see all the top Spanish riders: Contador, Valverde, Rodriguez and many more all giving speeches (Valverde s team were all there supporting him). It was amazing to see so many people at this event - everyone who has anything to do with cycling was there and fantastic to be invited to this event (poor Harry had to sit and translate for me all evening!). A well organised evening - here s looking forward to a great, well organised 74th Edition La Vuelta 2019! Members of the US Congress debated the issue and the problem was fixed but not before the New York Times bemoaned the use of An Expensive Comma. It wouldn t be the last such error. When errors are introduced into legal documents, they re likely to be noticed far more than in any other form of writing, he says. People are more prone to fighting over instances of syntactic ambiguity than in other kinds of writing. Muddying the the waters Of course, in some circumstances, those drafting contracts may want to introduce ambiguities. Getting different countries to sign up to the same principles can be challenging, particularly for climate change agreements. Early climate change conventions included this line: The Parties have a right to, and should, promote sustainable development. The sentence ensures those signing the agreement have the ability to promote sustainable development and should do so. But in its original draft, the second comma was placed after promote, not before it: The Parties have a right to, and should promote, sustainable development. Some countries weren t happy with the original wording because they didn t necessarily want to be locked into promoting sustainable development. Moving the comma kept the naysayers happy while placating those who wanted stronger action. By being slightly creative with punctuation, countries can feel like their interests have been addressed, explains Stephen Cornelius, chief advisor on climate change with the WWF, who has represented the UK and EU at UN climate change negotiations. You re trying to get an agreement that people can substantially agree with. Tricks Tricks of the of the trade trade Such linguistic flexibility happens more often than you d think. In diplomacy, even though you try to have a single agreement, it s very common to change the meaning for different parties, says climate change negotiator Laura Hanning Scarborough. You can use terms like inter alia, or this includes, amongst other things to blur the lines to include anything. You can use commas as part of that, too. There are so many language tricks you use to appease people. For most people, however, making sure that contracts are unambiguous is important. For that reason, it s crucial to test contract language to breaking point by giving it to someone who will test its limits someone who will read it in the most awkward, unhelpful way, says Tiffany Kemp, a commercial contracting trainer for the International Most people try to make contract language as clear as possible but sometimes leaving a bit of ambiguity can help both sides negotiate better Association for Contract and Commercial Management. One of the biggest cases battled over a comma was a dispute between two Canadian telecommunications companies. Rogers Communications and Bell Aliant fought a legal battle worth CAD$1m ($760,000) over a contract to replace utility poles across the country. The argument stemmed from a single sentence: This agreement shall be effective from the date it is made and shall Roger Casement, an Irish nationalist, was hanged in 1916 continue in force for a period of five (5) years from the date it is made, and thereafter for successive five (5) year terms, unless and until terminated by one year prior notice in writing by either party. The two sides argued that the comma after five (5) year terms meant something different: Bell Aliant said that the single year s notice of termination applied at any time, Rogers that it only applied after the first five-year term ended. This was important as Rogers had struck a great deal under their reading of the contract: when they signed a contract to lease the poles from Bell Aliant in 2002, they were paying just CAD$9.60 per pole. By 2004, the cost had nearly doubled. Bell Aliant, understandably, wanted to terminate the contract and renegotiate at the new, higher price. Rogers didn t. Successive courts were equally uncertain about the agreement: Canada s Radio- Television and Telecommunications Commission first declared in favour of Bell Aliant in 2006; a year later, it changed its mind after consulting the French language version of the contract, which didn t include the same ambiguity. This dispute wasn t brought about by wilful ignorance, reckons Kemp. Sometimes there are genuinely different understandings, she explains. That little comma was put in a place that you would put in a place for a breath if you re reading it out loud. Deadly punctuation How do these misplaced or misused commas make their way into complicated contracts that have been drafted by professionals? Part of the problem, says Adams, is technology. Drafting contracts has long been a function of copying and pasting from precedent contracts, and that results in a kind of heedlessness, a detachment from the nitty gritty of how you ve expressed what you want to express in a contract, he says. It s easy to miss this sort of problem. Roger Casement, an Irish nationalist, was hanged in 1916 under the 1351 Treason Act. He had incited Irish prisoners of war being held in Germany to band together to fight against the British. The debate over whether Casement was guilty hinged on the wording of the 14th Century Treason Act and the use of a comma: with it, Casement s actions in Germany were illegal; without it, he would get away with it. Despite Casement s lead counsel s assertion that crimes should not depend on the significance of breaks or of commas, and if a crime depended on a comma, the matter should be determined in favour of the accused, and not of the Crown, the court ruled that the comma mattered. Casement was found guilty and executed. Though today life and death doesn t hinge on the use of commas but big money, insurance policies and environmental agreements certainly do. For that reason, it s important to carefully check any contracts we sign, the experts say and that means not just dotting the Is and crossing the Ts but also making sure every comma is in the correct place. People sign contracts not because they ve negotiated their meanings, but based on their own understanding of what they re agreeing to, explains Nobles. Contracts written by lawyers on behalf of a business might have a different meaning than what the lay person understands. So it pays to pay attention. If a piece of punctuation seems out of place or introduces ambiguity, speak up. The purpose of a contract is to help people get the outcomes they both expected, and to know what they re supposed to do and get from the other side, says Kemp. If there s a misunderstanding, you owe it to both of you to get it sorted out. Have the argument today, rather than tomorrow. It could prevent a lot of pain in the future.

Because it is easy, relatively secure, and easily accessible. There is also a Deposit Protection Scheme in place which covers the amount in your bank account up to 100,000 or 75,000. So far, so good? The Deposit Protection amount has been reduced from 85,000 which was the previous compensation limit. This means that if a bank or building society cannot meet its obligations and subsequently fails, or becomes insolvent, the maximum compensation you will receive will be 75,000 or 150,000 for a joint account (husband and wife). What about growth on your savings? R eturns are not good, interest rates are hardly inflationbeating and your hard-earned cash is not really being put to work for you. In fact, the average savings account is paying less than 1% per year and some have even reduced to 0.2% or even 0.1%! What is the alternative? - A Spanish Tax Compliant Bond So how does this look in reality? Consider this: 20,000 in an average savings account with a gross interest rate of 1% will pay: 20,000 at 1% pa, equalling 200 each year before tax. S etting up a Spanish tax compliant bond is no more difficult than setting up a bank account, and, once you have invested, you have easy access to your money: regular, or one-off withdrawals, to suit your needs % The returns over the last few years have been: % % % % The growth on a Spanish Tax Compliant Bond is free of tax until a withdrawal is made -even then only the growth is subject to tax. Any tax due is paid directly to the Hacienda and no Modelo 720 declaration is required for holders of this kind of Bond. The Bond can also be held jointly so there should be no liability to Succession Tax on the first death.
