Nigel: Ali it s been a terrific year for us, while Brexit has had an impact, we moved fast to secure International Markets, opening an office in Antwerp, Belgium, and a massive program of Property Expos in Belgium, Holland, Sweden and the UK. We have also put roots down in Scandinavia, which will be a large market for us in We also put ourselves into the expert category for New and Modern Style Homes all across Alicante and Murcia Regions. The CBPG: What would you say was your primary focus for 2018? Nigel: To build on what we did in 2017 and look to grow this area of the business and expand in the area of Spain and also open new offices internationally. We will also repeat the expos in Spring 2018 The CBPG: How long has your company has been established in the Costa Blanca? Nigel: 10 years this year (2017) The CBPG: Would you have done anything differently if you could start again? Nigel: It s a mantra of mine not to have any regrets - we have learned a lot in 10 years! The CBPG: How many staff members/offices does the company have at this moment? Nigel: In Spain, 17 colleagues, in 3 offices, 1 in Belgium, and 1 in the UK. The CBPG: What do you think is the secret of your success? Nigel: Listening to clients; a helpful attitude; a trained and secure team of colleagues and a very smart approach. In essence, our Girasol people are superb. The CBPG: Why did you choose the Costa Blanca to start up your business? And why would you recommend that people should come here? Nigel: Ease of access, great weather, growing economy, lots to do, a cosmopolitan environment and great prices as well! The CBPG: How do you see the property market moving in the foreseeable future? Nigel: Modern homes are very popular and are potentially growing at a faster rate, but you have to be smart at advising people where to buy for the long run. Smaller, less resourced agents who pop up when the market is hot will start to disappear again. You have to know and offer a long term solution for clients before, during, and after the sales process, and to be ready to help them with any queries? The CBPG: What do you see as the main challenges for Estate Agents/Constructors in the next few years? Nigel: Balancing growth with expectation; pricing realistically and developing in a sympathetic way. The CBPG: If there was one thing that you could say made you feel different to the hundreds of other Estate Agents in the Costa Blanca, what would that be? Nigel: We innovate; we think about the client constantly (because they are the only ones that matter); we care, and we are here for the long term, that s 4 things! Anticipa, one of Spain s biggest real estate providers, expects sales to rise 9.3% next year to 526,000 units, up from 481,000 this year and 21% more than in It is also forecasting that prices will have risen by 6.9% by the end of 2017 and, looking ahead to 2018, are set to rise by slightly less at 6.1%. Prices for re-sales and new builds are expected to continue to increase by 5.8% over the fourth quarter of this year, a leading property specialist reports in its latest real estate market report, but this was compiled before Catalonia declared independence and the national Government took over the running of the region. They also pointed out that the company s forecast for 2018 is 85% higher than the low point in 2013 when just 285,000 homes were sold. But as the report shows, the market is still an incredible 42% below its peak of over 900,000 sales in Building completions on new homes will, by year end, also be well below the peak reached in the boom years. The report expects a total of 63,400 in 2019, compared to 62,900 in The report explained that, although these figures show a significant increase of over 48% in relation to the low of 2016 when 42,700 completed properties, volume still lies 90% below its peak.

So far, November has proven just as politically charged, with chaos in the UK cabinet leading to concerns that Brexit negotiations may be derailed. The euro, meanwhile, came under pressure thanks to the European Central Bank s (ECB) latest policy meeting, while the US dollar remained robust thanks to developments in President Trump s tax plans and the odds of the Federal Reserve increasing interest rates in December remaining over 90%. Over the last four weeks the GBP/EUR exchange rate has been fluctuating between and , with the pairing trading in the region of by the middle of November. EUR/GBP, on the other hand, fell from a high of to a low of (recovering to 0.88 at the time of writing) while EUR/USD shifted between $ and $ What s been happening? Towards the end of October the euro weakened in response to the ECB s hotly anticipated interest rate decision. The central bank reduced the size of its bond buying programme, but also extended it to run until at least September of next year. As interest rates aren t expected to be adjusted until QE ends, the move was euro-negative. The dovish long-term outlook for policy helped GBP/EUR march its way to an over 4-month high. However, the Bank of England (BoE) soon put paid to any Sterling strength. While the BoE increased borrowing costs for the first time in a decade, the Monetary Policy Committee intimated that future changes to borrowing costs would be gradual and to a limited extent leaving the pound to fall by as much as 2% against most of the majors. Sterling recovered some ground on upbeat UK data, but political developments put paid to a sustained Sterling recovery. Prime Minister Theresa May lost two cabinet ministers in the space of a week as scandal swirled round Westminster, and dark rumblings of a leadership challenge clouded the outlook for Brexit negotiations. What do you need to look out for? A continuation of the recent political dramas would, of course, weigh on the pound. If Brexit negotiations are adversely affected by all the upheaval, GBP could fall to fresh multiweek lows. Meanwhile, the strength of the US dollar could limit the euro s upside potential as we march towards December s Federal Reserve rate decision. As EUR/USD is the world s most traded currency pairing, the euro tends to weaken when the US dollar strengthens. Unless something happens to dash hopes of a US rate hike taking place next month, the US dollar is likely to remain elevated, keeping the euro under pressure in the process. 36 36 The CBPG Magazine 16th November - 13th December 2017 Issue 13 The Costa Blanca Property & Business Guide CYCLOGICAL November 17 6 MAN TEAM TIME TRIALS - MURCIA 2017 On Saturday 28th October 2017, six of us left the shop at 7am to travel to Ulea in Murcia to take part in our first ever Team Time Trial, hosted annually by La Purisima cycling club from Barriomar. We arrived in Ulea at 8am and had the traditional coffee and tostada which helps to get the engine going first thing in the morning! by Gary and Lynn from Cyclogical in Quesada We have never done a 6 man time trial before as none of us really enjoyed time trialling. After our light breakfast we proceeded to the start line which was just outside Ulea on an old camino (road) which ran parallel to the Murcia/Albacete dual carriageway. We met the other teams and were told that we would be the fifth team to start. After preparing our bikes and having a 10 mile We won! warmup we were ready for the off. Harry Morrow, our mechanic, was so excited that he was on the computer most days studying the course - he could tell us how many manhole covers there were on route, how many culverts there were and how many potholes there were and I m glad he had memorised everything! It was soon our turn to start and we went straight into a 3km climb of approx 5-7% which was a pretty tough start and really got the hearts pumping. We all did approx metres on the front before dropping off to the back and continued doing this all the way to the halfway point where Harry (our navigator) told us to take a right off the slip road, round the roundabout and back as we had covered exactly 11.2km as per instructions. We turned around and went racing back towards the start line, the steep climb that we had in the beginning was now a magic downhill allowing us to hit speeds of up to 60km per hour. We finished in a good time and were delighted with our achievement. It wasn t until all the teams were back that we were told that we had won with a couple of the teams misjudging the course and turning at the wrong point. We were absolutely delighted with this result for our first ever event and are now looking forward to entering two teams next year. Our team rides together every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday and are all good friends. The team consisted of Gary Routledge, Steve Buckley, Paul Cameron, Harry Prize-giving Morrow, Dom TJ and Joe Laverick (who is only 16 and is the English Junior Time Trials Champion!). After the event we were invited back to a Restaurant just outside Murcia for the prizegiving and for a superb lunch Spanish style, needless to say a great day was had by all. Team Cyclogical meets every Tuesday and Thursday night at Team Cyclogical 5.30pm, and Sunday mornings at 8am and covers between 90 and 120kms at a moderate to fast pace, so, if you fancy a challenge come along and join us. James Dyson s brilliant argument FOR no deal Brexit Sir James Dyson has said that the time has come for the United Kingdom to walk away from the European Union without a Brexit deal. The sixth round of Brexit talks concluded with David Davis and Michel Barnier announcing that negotiations were still in the first phase of talks. Speaking on a recent Andrew Marr Show, Sir James, the founder of the Dyson company, claimed the EU was asking for too much in negotiations. He said: I don t think it is the Government s fault, I think the problem is the people we are negotiating with. I think that they are demanding billions The claim: The UK trades with the rest of the world (non-eu countries) under World Trade Organization (WTO) rules. The EU and the UK have said they want to reach an agreement on future trade, but leading Brexiteers say failing to reach a deal would not be disastrous. They have said the UK could revert to rules set by the WTO, and have claimed that s how we currently trade with the rest of the world. It is perfectly fine for the UK to leave and trade with the EU as we trade with the rest of the world at the moment, under world trade rules, said MP John Redwood recently. Even if we leave the EU and billions to leave is quite outrageous. And demanding it even before we have negotiated anything is outrageous. I would walk away, I think that is the only way to deal with them. I have been dealing with the EU and EU countries for the last 25 years, on IEC standards and energy labels and all that kind of thing, there s no way to deal with them, you have to walk away. If you walk away they ll come to us because they want to export all their products to us. They will come back to us. We are in a very, very strong position, an incredibly strong position. without a deal, we still get most favoured nation status under WTO rules, which is how we trade with the rest of the world, said MP Bernard Jenkin MP. Reality Check verdict: This is wrong. With regard to tariffs, the UK trades with 24 countries and territories under WTO rules alone. With 68 others it has, as part of the EU, free trade agreements, either fully or partly in place, which all enable trade on better terms. Currently the UK s trading relationships are based on its membership of the EU. During his BBC interview, Sir James also highlighted that the EU market was the slowestgrowing. He said: There REALITY CHECK: DOES THE UK TRADE WITH THE REST OF WORLD ON WTO RULES? By Alex Forsyth, Political correspondent, BBC News negotiating their own deal. Instead the EU negotiates trade deals on behalf of all 28 member states. Over the years, the EU has negotiated a number of free trade deals and other agreements that enable it to trade with the rest of the world on better terms. According to the European Commission, with regard to tariffs, there are 24 countries or territories with which the EU trades on WTO rules alone. Even with those 24, the EU has a variety of arrangements which make trade easier. For example, there is an agreement between EU and the US about the language which can be used by wine exporters on their bottles. The EU - and therefore the UK as a member - has trade deals with other countries, like South Korea, Mexico and recently Canada. The agreements vary in breadth and depth, but can mean trade happens on a preferential basis, so tariffs are lower than the is fantastic opportunity outside Europe, there is an opportunity within in Europe, but Europe is the slowest growing area in the world, all the other areas are much faster-growing. Nations putting the EU in danger After the sixth round of Brexit talks concluded with Michel Barnier, the EU s chief suggested talks could drag on into next year if the bloc s demands were not met. The Frenchman gave the UK a two-week deadline WTO maximums. After Brexit, or any transitional period, the UK could not automatically adopt trade arrangements that currently exist between the EU and other countries - it would have to negotiate its own. Some would be easier to nail down than others and Britain is a large market so there is a clear incentive for countries to negotiate. What would WTO rules mean? The UK wants to negotiate a comprehensive, bold and ambitious free trade agreement with the EU. If it can t achieve that, there are a number of other possible arrangements of varying depth before the UK reaches the point where it has no preferential trade relationship with the EU other than common membership of the WTO. If the UK had to trade under WTO rules, tariffs - a tax on traded goods - would be applied to all UK exports. The average WTO tariff varies from product to offer clarification on the financial settlement to get talks moving by December. He said: Only sufficient progress - that is to say sincere and real progress - on the three key issues of these negotiations will enable the triggering of the second phase of our negotiation. David Davis said it was time for the European Union and the United to product, from 0% on mineral fuels and pharmaceuticals, to around 20-35% on processed food and 45-50% on meat. Does any other country trade on WTO rules alone? However, according to the WTO, Mauritania has joined the Economic Community of West African States, and it has preferential trade arrangements with some 20 WTO members. There are some countries which aren t WTO members, including Algeria, Serbia and North Korea, but the WTO says all of its members have some sort of bilateral or regional trade agreement in place.

40 40 The CBPG Magazine 16th November - 13th December 2017 Issue 13 The Costa Blanca Property & Business Guide By Jane Corbin, The Balfour Declaration: BBC News My ancestor s hand in history One hundred years ago, only 67 words on a single sheet of paper lit a fire in the Holy Land, igniting the most intractable conflict of modern times. The Balfour Declaration was the first time the British government endorsed the establishment of a national home for the Jewish people in Palestine. While many Israelis believe it was the foundation stone of modern Israel and the salvation of the Jews, many Palestinians regard it as a betrayal. I ve always been drawn to the conflict which has continued ever since then, reporting on it from there for nearly 30 years. This time, however, I went on a personal journey, to discover the role played by an ancestor of mine: Leopold, or Leo, Amery. My mother, Olive Amery, told me stories when I was a child about this relative - a British politician involved in the drafting of the declaration. He added a sentence intended to safeguard the civil and religious rights of the majority population, the Palestinian Arabs. In Lustleigh, the Devon village where my grandparents lived, I visited the church where Leo is buried and saw the plaque to his memory, bearing the words of his friend Winston Churchill paying tribute to a great British statesman. Leo had a fascinating background: his mother was Jewish but converted and brought up her son as a Christian. He studied Islamic culture and went on to become an MP and then colonial secretary, overseeing Britain s rule during the mandate years The bombing of Jerusalem s King David Hotel in 1946 left 91 people dead in Palestine. Was Leo s vision that Jews and Arabs could live and prosper together in peace doomed to failure and was violence inevitable? These were the questions I wanted to answer when I came to Israel again this time. A total of 100,000 Jewish immigrants arrived in the first few years after the 1917 Balfour Declaration threw Britain s weight behind Zionism, the nationalist movement calling for the re-establishment of a Jewish homeland in the historic land of Israel. During the late 1930s this provoked a backlash from the Arab population who felt threatened, and the British reacted to the Arab Revolt by clamping down on Jewish immigration, just as Hitler s planned annihilation of European Jewry was about to come into devastating effect. And after World War Two, in retaliation, the Jewish underground movement attacked the British - in one of the most notorious cases, bombing the King David hotel in Jerusalem and killing British troops. In Israel I followed in Leo s footsteps in Jerusalem, recognising when I read his diaries that the success of violence on both sides that so shocked him when it broke out in the 1920s was something I had seen time and again myself: four wars in Gaza, bloody protests on the West Bank and suicide bombings in Israel. Leo The 1946 Amery Scheme sought to divide Palestine into a Jewish and an Arab state was bitterly disappointed at the British cap on Jewish immigration and I visited Atlit, one of the British internment camps, with 80-year-old Rabbi Meir Lau. He spent two weeks here when he arrived in Palestine as an eight-yearold survivor of Buchenwald extermination camp. Many other refugees were turned back - to Europe. It was against humanity after six years of horror, he said, shaking his head in sorrow as we walked along the rusty barbed wire fences. Where was the nation of the United Kingdom then? Lord Balfour would not have believed it. As the violence continued through the 1940s and Britain sought to rid itself of its Palestine problem, Leo had to accept the inevitability of partition. But he was working on his own solution, as I discovered in an archive in Jerusalem. There I found his 1946 map - the Amery Scheme - to divide Palestine into a Jewish and an Arab state. In faded red and blue it was remarkably similar to the United Nations Partition Plan a year later which resulted in the end of British rule and the creation of the State of Israel in But Arab countries refused to sign up to the UN s plan and, in the violence on both sides that followed, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians fled or were forced to flee the new State of Israel. One of the most poignant moments for me was visiting the ruins of Lifta - a Palestinian village abandoned nearly 70 years ago - with some of the old residents. Many Palestinians from here became refugees and have never been allowed to return to live in Lifta. But every year they come back with their children and grandchildren to remember. Hamid Suhail was seven when he fled - now he leans on a stick as his son Nasir helps him down the overgrown rocky slopes. I hope the day will come when we will have the right to come back here and live in peace, says Nasir. Hamid s granddaughter, Sohar, is emotional as she says: It makes me angry and sad at the same time to come here - although it is important to remember the history of these houses. Leo s conviction that the energy of the Jewish migrants would soon transform the Middle East Leo Amery was one of the people who drafted the Balfour Declaration is borne out 100 years on by the skyscrapers and hightech campuses of Tel Aviv, Israel s economic capital. But living standards here, better than many European countries, are a far cry from the condition in which the majority of Palestinians find themselves: their economy is in crisis. And they believe it stems from what they perceive as the unfair hand that Britain dealt them with the Balfour Declaration. The closest I have ever come to seeing Leo s vision for Palestine succeed was in the 1990s when I was the only journalist allowed behind the scenes to witness the Oslo peace process. The Israeli and Palestinian negotiators who met secretly in Norway spoke movingly to me then of their determination to make peace. The optimism created by the historic handshake on the White House lawn between the leaders of Israel and the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO) was shattered when a Jewish extremist assassinated Israel s prime minister Yitzhak Rabin and the PLO s chairman Yasser Arafat failed to stop suicide bombings launched by the Nasir Sohail and his daughter Sohar visit Lifta, the family s former village Islamist extremist group Hamas. I went back to see the men whose story I had told nearly 24 years ago. Yossi Beilin, the Israeli junior minister who initiated the Oslo talks, was still hopeful. The process we began in Oslo is irreversible, he told me. It created a legitimacy for Israel in the Arab world and will hopefully be conducive to a permanent agreement. although much, much later than our original idea. But Ahmed Qurei, the chief Palestinian negotiator, known as Abu Ala, was pessimistic. Unfortunately it s been nearly 25 years and a waste of time, he said. Still the Israelis are controlling the Palestinian territory and people. It s the Israeli mentality of occupation. My journey ended in the home of Chaim Weizmann, the first president of Israel, in Rehovot. I found Leo s name in the visitors book - he had come here aged 76 on his last trip to Israel in I sat at Weizmann s desk and read the correspondence between the two friends and found that Leo all those years ago recognised that Jerusalem would be the thorniest issue when it came to making peace: both sides would not compromise in their determination to have it as their capital. And so it remains to this day as I have seen so often. Leo never thought violence was inevitable here. He believed it was the result of wrong political decisions and the bloody and unpredictable events of history - as I discovered myself after the Oslo peace agreement. Now there is a danger that extremism and intransigence on both sides will make peace impossible for decades still to come. Jane Corbin at Chaim Weizmann s desk

This is because they claim that they are diseases of our lifestyle and the results of failing to eat well, exercise regularly or treat the body and mind in ways that heal the ageing system. When you reach your forties, the cumulative effects of unhealthy eating habits and patterns of living make themselves known for the first time, as the natural resilience of the body unfortunately starts to reduce. Most bodies come with warranties for 80 years of productive, relatively trouble-free service (if the basic requirements for preventative maintenance are followed): Take steps to improve your diet and exercise regime Use breathing techniques to reduce your stress levels Use vitamins, minerals and herbs to boost your body s healing system and protect yourself from toxins NUTRITION Eat oily fish at least twice a week oily fish such as sardines, mackerel and salmon are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids - special fats that have beneficial effects on many of the body s functions. For example they reduce the risk of heart attacks and inhibit the clotting tendency of the blood. Eat broccoli at least twice a week scientific evidence for the protective effects of vegetables is very strong. Broccoli is one of the most beneficial members of the cabbage family to eat. It has significant anti-cancer properties and contains many nutrients and protective compounds. Eat more garlic the health benefits of garlic have been acknowledged for many years. It helps to lower blood pressure and cholesterol and prevents blood clots from forming. It is also a strong antiseptic which can stop the growth of bacteria or fungi that can cause disease. Eat more whole grains whole grains are an excellent source of fibre. Fibre keeps the digestive system operating well, helps lower cholesterol, reduces the risk of colon cancer and slows down the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream. Incorporate soy products into your diet soy proteins are considered healthier than animal proteins as they do not come with a lot of saturated fat that stimulates the liver to make cholesterol. They also contain compounds that may offer protection against cancer. Drink green tea green tea contains a high amount of catechins which lower cholesterol and also have significant anti-cancer and antibacterial effects. Use ginger the Chinese have always regarded ginger as a healing ingredient. It has remarkable therapeutic qualities and is particularly good for the digestive and circulatory systems and for reducing inflammation. VITAMINS AND MINERALS Take more vitamin C You need certain levels of vitamin C to build strong connective tissue, including the linings of coronary arteries and to allow the healing system to repair wounds. Take carotenes Fruits and vegetables that contain carotenes (a family of red and orange pigments related to vitamin A) have excellent cancer-protective value. These include peaches, apricots, mangoes, squashes, sweet potatoes and carrots. Take vitamin E and Selenium These two compounds complete the antioxidant formula to prevent premature ageing. Selenium is a trace mineral with proven cancer fighting benefits, whilst vitamin E is a powerful protector of the body. EXERCISE Keep on walking I really can t understand why people don t walk more; you can do it anywhere, it carries the least risk of injury of any form of exercise, provides a complete workout and it s a lot gentler on your knees than jogging! Having said that, in order to keep up regular exercise you need to do something you enjoy so if you prefer to go to the gym, cycle or play sport go for it! Ideally, try to walk for at least 45 minutes a day, five times a week and try to include some uphill walking or walk briskly so that your heart rate goes up. Stretching Stretching is one of the most natural forms of non-aerobic exercise. Again, for most of us it s easy to do, there is no cost involved and you can do it anywhere! Ok, possibly not in the local supermarket!? Don t forget to include areas such as your neck and shoulders; a lot of us carry a lot of tension in these areas. TOXINS Cumulative toxin damage is one of the chief reasons why, as we age, the body s healing system is not as effective. It is very important to be aware of the toxin residues that are in our food and in our environment. Avoid hydrogenated oils or fats The process of artificially hydrogenating oils deforms fatty acids which creates trans-fatty acids. These could unbalance the hormones that regulate healing. The best oil to use is olive oil, as it contains mostly monounsaturated fat which seems to be much better for our bodies than either saturated or polyunsaturated fat. Good news for us living here in Spain as olive oil is easy to buy and not expensive! Avoid artificial sweeteners, additives or colours Many of these artificial substances can disrupt our physiology and some experts suspect them of having a toxic effect on the nervous system. Be aware of the water you drink Stop drinking tap water especially if it tastes of chlorine - and think about buying a water purification system. Again, we are lucky that here in Spain bottled water is not expensive; however on the downside it is heavy to carry home!! Buy organic We all know that conventionally-grown fruit and vegetables are often sprayed with pesticides or coated with fungicides. Some of the worst offenders are: strawberries, cherries, celery, spinach, apples, peaches, green beans, cucumbers and grapes. It s also a good idea to buy organic wheat, soy and potatoes. Unfortunately, organic produce doesn t seem to be as readily available here as it is in the UK, but hopefully more shops will start to stock organic products. EMOTIONAL AND SPIRITUAL WELLBEING There is no doubt in my mind that all imbalances in the physical body are as a result of what is going on in our minds. For your healing system to function at its best you need to look after your emotional and spiritual wellbeing as well as looking after your physical body. Ways to increase your spiritual wellbeing Read inspirational books they could be selfhelp titles, biographies or spiritual topics Connect more with nature being surrounded by greenery and water helps absorb negative energy Spend time with genuine, positive people Listen to uplifting music Learn to forgive and let go Avoid reading the newspapers and watching the news on television for at least one day a week Learn to be grateful for everything you have Work with a local charity and help others who have more challenges in their lives than you do. Or, if you prefer, work with an animal charity and see how animals love us unconditionally Finally, two very simple things to do to help fight ageing and encourage healing: get enough sleep and avoid getting sunburnt! Puerto de Urkiola It s shorter than the world s tallest building, but in Basque culture and cycling, this climb has a towering reputation. During the annual Tour of the Basque Country, stages here have the same status as the Tour de France s trips to Alpe d Huez and Mont Ventoux. Height: 713m Length: 5.7km Elevation gain: 524m Average gradient: 9.2% 11. Sa Calobra, Majorca The Coll de Cals Reis, built in the 1930s to end a tiny fishing port s isolation, is a work of art, but doesn t feature in any professional races - the drawback of being a dead end. Not that it matters, because there is a continuous race up the climb, contested by some of the world s top Height: 728m Length: 9.9km Elevation gain: 706m Average gradient: 7.1% 10. Xorret de Cati Xorret de Cati This hellish, fireman s pole of a climb near Alicante has featured in the Vuelta a España five times, on each occasion making fools of some of the world s best riders. Only four kilometres and steeper. Puerto de Urkiola Height: 728m Length: 9.9km Elevation gain: 706m Average gradient: 7.1% 9. Lagos de Covadonga Introduced as Spain s answer to Alpe d Huez, Covadonga is not long but is devilishly steep - and can boast something with which the Alpe isn t particularly blessed: unspoiled natural beauty. With its two lakes beneath the summit, the Enol and the Ercina, and stunning views over the Picos de Europa, it is the perfect antidote to the barren summits of the deep south and the Sierras around Madrid. possibly in all of cycling. It was said when the Vuelta premiered the Angliru in 1999 that no one in their right mind could have looked at this narrow, near-vertical Asturian mountain road and thought it suitable for bike racing, but that was perhaps the point: the man who had proposed it to the Vuelta organizers, Miguel Prieto, hadn t seen it because Prieto was almost blind. A nature-lover and fanatical student of the mountains, he had one day struggled up the Angliru with his magnifying glass and altimeter, and been so struck by the steepness of the gradient that a letter was soon in the post to the Vuelta organisers. Height: 1,573m Length: 12.5km Elevation gain: 1,266m Average gradient: 10.1% 7. Port de Larrau (Spain/France) The scene of Miguel Indurain s dethroning by Bjarne Riis at the 1996 Tour de France, this picturesque road twists upwards like the ribbon of a rhythmic gymnast. There are two difficult kilometres before a moment s respite in Larrau; from there the D12 reels in a devilish vortex towards the pass, through farmland and Alto de l Angliru forest, leaving a rippled sea of lesser green peaks behind it and to the west. Height: 1,585m Length: 14.8km Elevation gain: 1,205m Average gradient: 8.14% 6. Puerto de Ancares The 2008 Tour de France winner Carlos Sastre says that Spain is a cyclist s paradise from tip to toe, but Sastre can t help lapsing into swoons when he s asked to describe the Ancares mountain range that straddles Galicia and Castilla y León in the far north-west. The Ancares, that s something else, Sastre gasps. And it s hard to argue. All roads in this rippled, velvety green wonderland converge on the main puerto or pass 1640 metres above sea level. The are four routes to the summit, all difficult and all mind-bogglingly Sa Calobra, Majorca beautiful. Having been largely ignored even by Spaniards, the region itself or more specifically its remoteness and lack of development have become a source of voyeuristic fascination in recent years. Some villages here have only had electricity and running water since the 1980s. You can still go hours without seeing a single car. Almost extraterrestrial in its desolation, with the fitting exception of one of the world s best astronomical observatories on its summit, it overlooks the A-92 autoroute as it from the vantage point of another world or even galaxy. No villages bustle on its pleats, not road forsakes its camouflage amid the scrubs and pines, and no branch or bush betrays the Poniente winds that frequently lash the Sierra de Los Filabres from the west. Sierra de la Pandera Port de Larrau 2. Bola del Mundo In the months between the Sierra de la Pandera s unveiling on the route of the 2002 Vuelta a España and the race itself, panic spread through the professional peloton like a forest fire. The Pandera had been billed by the press as the Angliru of the South with the added scourge of the blazing Andalusian heat. Closer examination revealed that it wasn t quite as tough as the hype suggested, but everything is relative: the Pandera is still an absolute brute, short but totally exposed and sickeningly steep in its middle portion. Finding the tiny, traffic-free Bola del Mundo Jaèn and its 13th century Castillo de Santa Catalina to one side and the Sierra Nevada mountain range to the other. Height: 1,830m Length: 16.2km 4. Lagunas de Neila No matter which of the baked planes surrounding it is your approach, the Sierra de la Demanda mountain range in northern Spain comes as a hefty and memorable surprise. During race days in the annual Vuelta a Burgos, the hills comes alive, but often one can spend hours on the roads and see two, maybe three cars, perhaps a couple of horses or cows, some mushroom foragers and, of course, a few bikes. There are three routes to the top of the range, from Huerta de Arriba, Quintanar de la Sierra, and Villavelayo. Seen from its base behind a rabble of sheds and warehouses, the ascent of the Bola del Mundo possesses no great allure. The road itself is just a belt of concrete slapped haphazardly across a bare mountainside. Indeed its inclusion in previous editions of the Vuelta is purely because it is so hard, with an average incline of 12.7 per cent in the 3.3km from Navacerrada to the peak, on top of the altitude and the rough surface. Height: 2,257m Length: 21.8km Elevation gain: 1,350m Average gradient: 6.2% 1. Pico de Veleta Calar Alto This tortuous, gravelly ribbon of tarmac petering out under the Pico de Veleta in southern Spain s Sierra Nevada range is the highest paved climb in mainland Europe. Given that trained cyclists say that altitude debt starts to kick in at around 2000 metres above sea level, it s not hard to imagine how arduous the climbing becomes in the second half of the Veleta climb. The Vuelta has ventured part of the way up but never higher than 2550 metres, and probably never will unless global warming keeps snow off the summit for more than the present window of a few weeks at the height of summer. Several routes converge near or beyond the Pradollano ski resort, 2100 metres above sea level, the toughest, quietest and prettiest of which is the one from Monachil via El Purche. This time, only 14 dogs and their owners came along, but fortunately there were many other supporters that found the way to the Finca. In addition to the Fun Dog Show, there was music by Jurgen Rost and Bernd Mann - and plenty of food, drinks and homemade cakes, all donated by volunteers! Chris Batten and Kathleen Green were there as well, with a little flea market and tombola to help raise money for the animals. Even with only 14 dogs it was difficult for the judges (Kim, Martina Judges Kim, Martina and Christina - and their little helper. and Christina) to choose - but finally a winner was declared - Fina with her owner Heidemarie. 2nd place went to Leo and his owner Gabriela, and 3rd to Tess and her owner Sue. We would like to thank all the dogs and their owners for coming along to the finca, and we hope you had a lovely time! Even in the last three or four weeks, we rescued, Cispa a young female dog who was just cruelly dumped on the canal road. If you would like to meet Cispa, she s at the finca, loves her food and going out for walks. An Englishman called us recently for help - he is very ill and needed a home for his 2 goats! The girls are now settled in with the other goats (one is very naughty she thinks she is the Queen!). We are still looking for names for both. Happy Animales Spanien is a non-profit charity. 49 16th November - 13th December 2017 Issue 13 The CBPG Magazine 49 WEATHER FORECASTING S POST-1987 REVOLUTION It was a weather forecast that went so disastrously wrong that it led to a television clip becoming globally famous during an airing at the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics. In the BBC weather studio on 15 October 1987, Michael Fish had drawn on Met Office guidance to dismiss any suggestion that Britain might be struck by a hurricane. But that very night, great swathes of the country were battered by dangerously fast winds, including a previously unheard of sting jet that left as many as 18 people dead, and Michael Fish and his colleagues wondering what had hit them. Now, as the 30th anniversary of that devastating onslaught approaches, I asked him what ran through his mind on that terrible morning. He replied: I can t say it on camera. Meanwhile, the Met Office, rather than burying its failings back then, is using the opportunity to explain how its forecasts - indeed its whole approach to communicating severe weather - have been transformed. There are some impressive figures to illustrate the point. Back on that October day in 1987, the forecasting teams Just a few nights of bad sleep upsets your brain Thanks to the clocks going back last month, many of us managed to grab a little bit of extra shut-eye. And that s no bad thing because, as a country, we seem to be chronically sleep-deprived. According to the Sleep Council, the average Briton gets six-anda-half hours sleep a night, which for most people is not enough. Lots of studies have shown that cutting back on sleep, deliberately or otherwise, can have a serious impact on our bodies. A few nights of bad sleep can really mess with our blood sugar control and encourage us to overeat. It even messes with our DNA. Disturbed nights So the negative effects on our bodies of sleep deprivation are clear. But what effect does lack of sleep have on our mental health? To find out Trust drew on a stream of weather information from satellites, ships and buoys. These observations totalled about 1,200 every 24 hours. Compare that with the flood of data that pours in now: as many as 215 billion observations every day. The fleet of satellites has expanded, the capability of each spacecraft has improved immeasurably and the range of measurements they can make has been revolutionised. Add to that the automatic flows of data beamed in from aircraft, ships and buoys, together with a network of radar stations across the country that can measure rain to previously unheard of accuracies. But the information Me teamed up with sleep scientists at the University of Oxford to run a small experiment. This time, we recruited four volunteers who normally sleep soundly. We fitted them with devices to accurately monitor their sleep and then, for the first three nights of our study, let them get a full, undisturbed eight hours. For the next three nights, however, we restricted their sleep to just four hours. Each day our volunteers filled in a psychological questionnaire designed to reveal any changes in their mood or emotions. They also kept video diaries. So what happened? Sarah Reeve, a doctoral student who ran the experiment for us was surprised by how quickly their mood David Shukman - BBC Science editor is only of use when it s fed into computer models of the weather, to build a detailed 3D picture of what s happening in the atmosphere - and therefore what s likely to happen in the coming hours and days. That task relies on raw computing power, and back in 1987 the Met Office s computer had a processing capacity that allowed it to make about 4 million calculations a second - very fast for the time. That means the models of the weather can be run and rerun at far greater speeds than 30 years ago - when one or two runs a day was the norm. Given that this happened after only three nights of sleep deprivation, that is pretty impressive. Three of our four volunteers found the experience unpleasant, but one of them - Josh - claimed to be largely unaffected. This week probably hasn t taken as much of a toll as I thought it would on me, he said. a day but they can be compared with up to 50 others managed by other weather centres around the world - generating an ensemble of models that produces a spread of possible outcomes of any given weather situation. And the models themselves have become much more finegrained. In 1987, the standard global weather model divided the world into grid squares of 150km - which seriously limited how well the weather could be understood. Now, those squares have sides of just 10km, massively improving the accuracy of any forecasts. Back in 1987, the forecasters were doing the best they could but things went seriously awry. A Met Office analysis tried to explain why. The computer model had originally suggested that the storm might head Britain s way, which led to a warning of a period of wet and windy spells, soon to be regarded as a massive understatement. But the computer - God, according to Michael Fish - then indicated that the storm would veer south towards France. In the event, fuelled by warm tropical air flowing unusually from the south, the storm was passing over the Bay of Biscay which was only sparsely monitored by ships and buoys - the lack of data would prove fatal. I feel perfectly fine - not happy, sad, stressed or anything. Yet the tests we did on him showed something very different. His positive emotions fell sharply after two nights of disturbed sleep, while negative emotions began to rise. So even though he felt OK there were signs that he was, mentally, beginning to suffer. Stuck in negative thoughts The outcome of our small test reflects the results of a much bigger study And to make matters worse, the latest batch of data, meagre though it was, arrived too late to be fed into the most detailed of the computer models that was being prepared as the storm advanced. On top of all that, the particular structure of the storm allowed it to There has been a step change in the observations from satellites develop a vicious feature that had never been observed before - what became known as a sting jet, a 50km-wide blast of extremely fast wind. Along the English south coast, the gusts were so strong that the anemometer measuring their speed at Shoreham recorded 115mph - and then broke. Even now, Met Office experts have no idea how rapid the winds actually became. This storm, that might be expected only once every 200 years, struck trees that were in full leaf and standing on sodden ground which made them far more vulnerable to being blown over. In all, 15 million trees were lost. Ken Mylne, a senior weather forecaster at the Met Office, said that even now the same storm would be difficult to looking at the impact of sleep deprivation on the mental health of students. Researchers recruited more than 3,700 university students from across the UK who had reported problems sleeping and randomised them into two groups. One group received six sessions of online CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) aimed at improving their sleep; the other group got standard advice. Ten weeks into the study, the students who received CBT reported a halving in rates of insomnia, accompanied by significant improvements in scores for depression and anxiety, plus big reductions in paranoia and hallucinations. Daniel Freeman, professor of clinical psychology at Oxford University, who led a recent study thinks one of the reasons why sleep deprivation is so bad for forecast in detail but the broad outlines would be clearer. We can now estimate the uncertainty in real time and we can communicate the level of risk so the chance of being caught out would be much, much less. After the storm, the Met Office set up a severe weather warning service and later introduced a system that highlights the likelihood of a range of possible impacts, emphasised by a colour code. Long before approaching British shores, a rerun of the 1987 storm would be assigned a name. Storm Michael, one Met Office official quipped. So, the last word should go Michael Fish himself. He points to the dramatic improvements in technology to say that forecasters have a much easier time these days. But what are his thoughts about that infamous forecast? I have some love and affection for it and I have a lot of hate for it as well. If I had a penny for every time that it s been played I d be a multimillionaire by now. our brains is because it encourages repetitive negative thinking. We have more negative thoughts when we re sleep-deprived and we get stuck in them, he said. Reassuringly he doesn t think a few nights of bad sleep means you will become mentally ill. The positive side of this research is it implies that helping people get a good night s sleep will go a long way to helping improve our sense of wellbeing. Norbert Schwarz, a professor of psychology at the University of Southern California, has even put a figure on it. He claims: Making $60,000 ( 48,400) more in annual income has less of an effect on your daily happiness than getting one extra hour of sleep a night. So, sleep well.

To celebrate, the ladies put on two fashion shows throughout the day to show off their new autumn collection and raise money, through a raffle, for Maria and the Pink Ladies and Panthers. Timeless Fashions would like to thank all of the lovely models who did a great job showing off the new range; to Simon Morton and Tony Horrocks of Sunshine FM; and Dan Davy, Stevie Spit and Cindy Fitzpatrick for entertaining the crowds throughout the day. 720 was raised and donated to the charity, well done! Sunday the 22nd of October was the fifth balloon release to mark breast cancer awareness month. An amazing 3, was raised on the day! This year was the fourth of five balloon races, kindly hosted by Zenia Boulevard, huge supporters of the AECC. Entertainment started at midday and carried on through to 6.30pm when the balloons were released to a rendition of Time to Say Goodbye, sang by Stevie Spit, Kylie Burgazzi, Verity Jo Hall and Maria O Hara. The release of balloons is the biggest attraction of the day as it is highly emotional for many people - the stage area and upstairs galleries were just brimming with spectators. The flowing crowds were entertained throughout the day by Cindy Fitzpatrick, Nikki G, Lady Jazz, Stuart Sinclair, Melissa Fanning, Chloe Leigh, Verity Jo Hall, Roxy Housewine, Rod Stewart (David John Williams), Molly Poole, Danzalusion, Paul Christie, Keith Dee, Rebecca Holt, Totally Dance School, Maria O Hara, Kylie and Stevie. Stevie Spit presented the show and the whole day was supported by Simon Morton and Sunshine FM. Each entertainer happily gives up their time to perform to the crowds, free of charge, something the charity is always extremely grateful for. All the money raised on the day was from people buying a helium-filled pink balloon and attaching a card to it with a message to a loved one who may have lost their battle to cancer. The message which is found the furthest away will receive a Timeless Fashions Ladies prize of 100 plus 20 goes to the person who sends in the message.
