4 Dear Parets/Guardias, Welcome to sprig! We have so much to celebrate warmer days, loger days, rays of sushie (we hope!), blossomig trees, tulips bloomig! Our Kidergarte Jourey cotiues as we welcome our ew theme, Sprig Is Here! Over the ext several weeks, your child will be ivolved i a variety of activities, icludig the followig: comparig ad cotrastig the differet seasos platig ad measurig the growth of bea plats estimatig, coutig, sortig, ad patterig differet varieties of seeds sequecig the story The Very Hugry Caterpillar by Eric Carle reviewig ad orderig the days of the week ivestigatig the differet sigs of sprig creatig verses to ew ad familiar poems idetifyig puctuatio symbols (questio mark, exclamatio mark) reviewig basic sight words i our weekly poems, as well as idetifyig rhymig words, descriptive words, ad words that ed with ig idetifyig ad sequecig the life cycle of a butterfly helpig to plat our classroom garde ad takig resposibility for the plats i the garde If possible, we would like your child to brig a small, hardy plat to school i a 2½ 4 ich pot (e.g., ivy, pothos, philodedro, spider plat, succulet). Please label the pot with your child s ame. Our Dramatic Cetre will be set up as a botay cetre where studets will care for the plat they have brought from home. At the Discovery Cetre, studets will create their ow grass head out of a old pair of ylos, pottig soil, ad grass seed. They will watch (with amazemet) as their grass head sprouts a ew hairdo durig this moth-log theme. Studets will create their ow popcor flowers ad marble kites at the Arts & Craft Cetre, as well as search for hidde plastic bugs, frogs, ad sakes amog the Easter grass at the Tactile Cetre. Other excitig activities will ecourage the studets to be curious ad discover the woders of the world aroud them. As always, a poem will be set home with your child each week. 5 LESSON 5 ESTIMATING A HANDFUL OF SEEDS/BEANS Focus Studets will estimate the umber of seeds/beas i three separate cotaiers (each cotaier will hold a differet type of seed/bea). Studets will the cout the actual umber of seeds/beas ad compare their results with their estimates. Materials three clear plastic jars or cotaiers with lids (all cotaiers should be the same size) three differet types ad sizes of seeds/beas (e.g., lima beas, chick peas, ad suflower seeds) chart paper felt markers Cash register tape ca metre stick be purchased at office A Hadful of Seeds activity sheet (blm 8.5.1) supply stores. paper plates pecils three copies of the Hudreds Chart (see blm 8.8.1, Lesso 8, page 45) three labels (oe for each type of seed) umber lie (1 50) (cash register tape works well) Preparatio Copy the followig chart oto chart paper: Cotaier #1 Estimate: Cotaier #2 Estimate: Cotaier #3 Estimate: Actual: Actual: Actual: Fill the three cotaiers about half full with each type of bea/seed (oe type i each cotaier). 6 Chart (to assist studets with recordig estimates ad actual umbers). Also display a label that idetifies the type of bea/seed at each cetre. Teachig the Lesso 1. Have the studets sit i a large group. Place the chart paper where it ca be easily see by all studets. Explai to the studets that you have three cotaiers, ad each is filled with a differet types of bea/seed. Hold up each cotaier oe at a time. Reach ito each cotaier, ad pull out a bea/seed for the studets to see. Ask: How would you describe this bea/seed? Does ayoe kow what this bea/seed is called? Tell the studets the ame of the bea/seed. Repeat this procedure for the beas/seeds i the two remaiig cotaiers. 2. Ask the studets: Which cotaier do you thik has the most or greatest umber of beas/seeds? Why do you thik this? Which cotaier do you thik has the fewest umber of beas/seeds? Why do you thik this? Place the cotaiers i order from greatest to fewest umber of beas/ seeds based o the class predictios. 3. Hold up the cotaier with the greatest umber of beas/seeds. Say: We are goig to estimate how may beas/seeds are i this jar. Who remembers what the word estimate meas? Liste to the studets resposes, ad reiterate the meaig of the word estimate (our very best guess). Tell studets they are goig to make their very best guess as to how may beas/seeds are i the jar. Ask the studets: Who would like to estimate how may beas/seeds are i the this jar? Allow a umber of studets to share their estimate with the class. Record their estimates o the chart paper. You may wish to record the studet s ame beside his/her estimate. Ope the lid of the jar. As a class, cout the umber of beas i the jar. Record the umber o chart paper. The, ask the studets: Were ay of the estimates exactly right? What estimates were close? What estimates were too high? What estimates were too low? 4. Hold up the secod jar of beas/seeds. Say to the studets: We believe that this jar has fewer beas/seeds tha the first jar. How may beas/seeds were i the first jar? 7 Ask the studets: Who would like to estimate how may beas/seeds are i the secod jar? Allow a umber of studets to share their estimate with the class. Record their estimates o the chart paper. You may wish to record the studet s ame beside his/her estimate. Ope the lid of the jar. Cout the umber of beas/seeds together. Record the umber of beas/seeds o the chart paper. The, ask the studets: Were ay of the estimates exactly right? What estimates were close? What estimates were too high? What estimates were too low? 5. Hold up the third jar of beas/seeds. Say to the studets: We believe that this jar has fewer beas/seeds tha the secod jar. How may beas/seeds were i the secod jar? Allow a umber of studets to share their estimate with the class. Record their estimates o the chart paper. You may wish to record the studet s ame beside his/her estimate. Ope the lid of the jar. Cout the umber of beas/seeds together. Record the umber of beas/seeds o the chart paper. The, ask the studets: Were ay of the estimates exactly right? What estimates were close? What estimates were too high? What estimates were too low? Follow-up Studet Activity 1. Divide the class ito pairs of studets. 2. Distribute a copy of the activity sheet A Hadful of Seeds (blm 8.5.1) to each pair of studets. 3. Have the studet pairs start at a cetre. Ask them to use the labels at the cetre to record the ame of the seed/bea they are estimatig o their activity sheet. 4. Tell the studets to take a hadful of the beas/seeds ad place it o a paper plate, estimate the umber of beas/seeds o the plate, ad record the umber o their activity sheet. The, they are to cout the actual umber of beas/seeds, ad record the umber o their activity sheet. 5. Have studets repeat the same procedure for each type of bea/seed. 8 Extedig the Idea Place a jar of differet items i a set locatio each week. Have the studets estimate how may items they thik are i the jar. Ask them to record their ame ad their estimate o a piece of paper. Provide a small box or jar to hold the estimate. At the ed of the week, cout the umber of items i the jar together. Check the estimates, ad reveal who was closest to the actual umber. You may wish to provide a small toke (e.g., bookmark, pecil, eraser) to the studet with the closest estimate. Ecourage studets ad provide opportuities for studets to estimate throughout the day. For example, ask questios such as: How log do you thik it will take us to complete this task? Studet Assessmet Circulate as the studets determie their estimate, record their estimate, cout the actual umber of items, ad record the actual umber of items. Observe each studet s ability to make reasoable estimates o the umber of items i each hadful. Also, observe their ability to use the umber lie to locate ad accurately record the umbers o their activity sheet. Ask the studets to liste carefully as you read the poem aloud. Read the poem aloud a secod time. This time, use the sprig poiter to poit out the words as you read them. Read the poem agai, ad have the studets be your echo. Read oe lie of the poem, ad have the studets repeat the lie after you. Fially, read (or sig) the poem together. 2.
