To the Managng Commttee, 16 REPORT OF THE DRF.CTOR Amercan School of Classcal Stud~s at Athens: have the honor to present a report of the actvtes of t he Amercan School of Classcal Studes at Athens from Aprl, 1975, through March The natonal uncertantes of last year contnue unresolved, and, though outward calm obtans, the perplexng dffcultes o~ Cyp:us, of tenson n the Aegean, and of the domestc economv g1~e r1se to frustraton and unease. The foregn polcv of the' Un1ted States cont nues to be unversally deplored, as does, perhaps to a lesser degree, t ha t of most of Western Europe. Scat tered strkes, ncludng those both of the scholarlv staff of the Archaeologcal Servce and of the ouards of archaeoloocal stes and museums, add nconvenence and rrtaton. n such condtjons, t s especally gratfyng to report that the work of the School has go~e on wthout serous mpedment and, partcularly n our educat1onal program, wth Pven greater rchness than before. Mare Fdao's necson to retre on November 1 caused sadness to all. Wth understandng sympathy for both staff and resdents and wth unfalng grace and good taste, she had restored to the School a resdence at once dstngushed and warm; her effortless manner concealed from all but a few of us the hard work and worry whch the job exacted from her. We are grateful not only for her achevement but also for her example now well followed by Jula Sarantopoulou. '. Though the staff remans otherwse l ttle changed, tme has cla1med two of the most fathful and nfluental of ts former me~bers. Eurydce Demetrakopoulou, who, durng and after her thlrty- two years as Assstant Lbraran of the Cennadeon provded unstntng gudance to readers and staff alke, ~ed on May 1, 1975, and Efstratos ~thanasades, bookkeeper and confessor to generatons of members, ded on March 4, As always, the success of our work owes much t o the oenerous help of our colleagues n the Drectorate General of Antqutes and Restoraton of the ~nstrv of Culture and Scences. There, too, death has taken an unexpected toll, wth the loss of Nkolaos Kontoleon and Joanns Konts, hoth recent nspectors General, ann of Yanns ~!Jjans, lonq Erhor of the Akropols. The vcxna questons of plrnnpd ndustral development at Pylos and of nternal organzaton dsrupted harmony wthn the Servce and led~ at varous tmes, to strkes bv ts personnel ann to ~~=-====~~aton of the Archaeoloqcal Councl. We are, therefore, 1 Ths account s to be read n conjuncton wth the followng reports, and the mpor tant aspects of the School's work wth whch they deal are here omtted. 17 oubly grateful to nspector General Demetros Lazardes and hs taff for ther successful efforts to mnmze the dsrupton to ur own work whch these events, combned wth the perennally eavy burden of work borne by understaffed offces, mght well ave produced. owng to the state of ou r fnances, mprovements and repars o the physcal plant have agan, perhaps unwsely, been confned 0 the mmedately essental; further delay of some projects, otably e xteror pantng of Lorng Hall, could cause damage to he fabrc of the buldnos, and p r ovson for them must be made the next budget. Unlke last y~ar, Lorng Hall has enjoye~ nearly full ccupancy, and jt s a trbute to ts contnung charm that a substantal ncrease n r oom-rates, ntroduced on January 1, has had no apprecable effect on demand. The result has been a small reducton n the operatng defct ; after the retrement of Katna Kalogrdou on Aprl 1, we shall experment wth a smaller staff, n the hope of further mprovewent n ts econowy. n the sprnq anr summer, n addton to the School's work at the Agora and n Cornth, here separately reported, Wolf Rudolph carred out a fnal season of excavaton at Hales for ndana Unversty n co-operaton wth the Unversty of Pennsylvana, Stephen Mller conducted a second season at Nemea for the Unversty of Calf orna at Berkeley, and Henry Robnson carred on hs work at Temple Hll n Cornth for Case Western Reserve Unversty. n connecton wth preparaton of publcaton, John Caskey made very lmted tests at Agha rn n Keos for the Unversty of Cncnnat, and conducted a smlar p rogram for the nsttute of Fne Arts, New York Unversty, n Samothrace. The lst of Members for the Regular Sesson appears elsewhere. Twenty Regular ~embers, the largest number n my experence, somewhat lessened the effcency of the fall trps and reduced the opportunty of Assocate Members, spouses and vstors to partcpat e, but t proved a manageable ~axmum, and the response of the ~embers has been generally postve. The fall trps, led hy c. w. J. Elot, Charles Wllams and me, covered famlar qround: Central Greece and Thessalv, Macedona and Thrace (ncudnq a stormv stay n Samothrace), south and west Peloponnesos, an~ the Argol d ann rorntha. We are grateful to colleagues who lent ther expertse at varous stes, notably Photos Petsas (Thessalonk), nemetros Lazarnes (Amphpols), Wolf Koengs a nn Alk Trand (Olympa), James Wrght (~enelaon), Frederck Cooper (Bassae), and Nancy Bookds (Cornth) Durng the wnter term, n addton to our regular topographcal courses, whch shared wth Professor Elot and to whch John Camp and Gottfred Gruben contrbuted, a nd semnars gven by the Vstng Professors, we were able to offer sessons n museums, led by Judth Bnder and Nancy Bookds (Akropols Museum),

18 19 John Caskey, Evelyn Harrson, Jerome Sperln9, and Eugene Vanderpool (Natonal Museum), Lesle Threatte (Epgraphcal Museum), and Alan Walker (Agora cons ). John Camp agan provded an ntroducton to e xcavaton pottery at the Agora, and Dave Jordan has agan organzed an eparaphc al dscusson q r oup, whch ths year has hrou~ht together nterested scholars from the Br tsh and French Schools a nd from the Fpgraphcal ~useum as well as our own Members. Professor Elot reports on the eytraordnarly fne "Thursdays- after- tea" whch he adrotly orchestrated. ~n experment n classes n modern Greek, ave n n our Se~ n ar Poom by a teacher from the Hellenc-Amercan Unon, unfortunately only a qualfed s uccess, occuned nearly all remanna weekday hours, a n d Professor Vanderpool never lacked company on hs Saturday walks. Members who attempted all could well complan of the rchness of the proffered det. We have concluded our wnte r actvtes wth the Open ~eetn9, held n the Lbrary on ~arch 1 5, n whch, after my bref account of Amercan Excavatons n 1975, Professor Caskey r evewed the progress and results of hs eycavatons J~ Keos. Hs Fxcellency, The Pres dent of the Republc, and ~rs. Tsatsos honored us hy ther attendance and were part of an over- capacty crowd. The precedng paragraphs and the reports whch foll ow show, n spte o f new detals, a famlar cour se of the School's actvte t s a course whch s lkely to change n the comng years, through the appontment of n ew s taff and through fnancal necessty. t s now that the dr ecton of change should be determned by t he Managnq Commttee. for the School ' s educatonal progr am, though ~oubt tha t anyone d d t The falure to a ppont a new D~rector of the s o 1nten e h t t and more Gennadus Lbrary now draws attenton to t a cen er,. such examples wll arse. There s now both the opportunty and the necessty.to decde the course of the School. ~ s too easy for us ~n Athens to overvalue those actvtes n wh~ch we are, ou ~s~ lve s, mmersed a n d to work for the support of those act lv~t es alone. f we are to hudget our resources well, however, ~e must do so n a way whch satsfes the School ' s basc pror ~t es, and to do that, we need to know what those prorte s now are. 3 1 March 1976 Respectfully submtted, James R. McCrede Drecto r On June 30, Francs Walton w ll r etre from the Drectorshp of the Gennadus Lbrarv, and C. W. J. Elot wll leave the Professorshp of Archaeology to return to Canada ; a vear later s hall make way for a new Drect or. The opportunty e xsts, as seldo~ nefore, to determne, throuah the selecton of senor offcers and the descrpton of ther posts, the course whch the School wll follow n the next vears. As we have r ecently learned, the Means of the School a re no longer adequate to support al l of nu~ present actvtes n ther present form. Although, owna to the fortunately strong poston o f the dollar n the past months, our defct may, ths year, fall short of the e no rmous fgure that had been estmated, costs c ontnue to rse at an alar~n a rate, and the proglem w ll not vansh of ts own accord. As have wrtten before, we must ether fnd a consderable sum of n ew money or restrct our actvty. To do ether n the best nterests of the School, we need a clear vew of the prortes among the School's var ous actvtes. The general terms n whch rased ths pont last year dd not, perhaps, carry suff cent urgency, but subsequen t deve lopments s how the problem more clearly. For e xample, t he ntal p lan to demo te the Professorshp of Archaeology to a junor post, now happly abandoned, suggested a low prorty

To the Drector, 22 REP<m' CF THE SECRETARY CF THE SCHOOL Amercan ~ of Classcal Studes ~ Athens: have the honor to submt a report on ~ actvtes snce assumng ~ dutes on 20 July Because of a prevous commtroent to excavate at Nemea, dd not take up my post untl late July, by whch tme my predecessor, Robert Pounder, had left. Because of Professor Pounder's effcency and consderaton, the School offce was n order and the transton was smoot h ly accanplshed. Only a few weeks of the SUDer Sesson remaned and thanks to the experence of the drectors, Professors EdAonson and Tracy, had only to perform the normal, daly functons of the offce. 23 n February organzed a party gven by the s tudent roembers of the School for ther counterparts at t he other foregn schools. Some one hundred and twenty persons from the varous schools attended and ths now almost yearly event was successful n gvng our students a chance to meet ther colleagues from the other schools. wsh to express my grattude to the staff of the School for advce and assstance, especall,y to Mss Pllal who has perodcally releved me of the burden of routne dutes and to Mrs. Dr va and Mr. A3atdes. A specal debt of grattude s owed to Professor Elot for hs frendly counsel and to the Drector and Mrs. McCrede f or ther many kndnesses al 1 help durng the year. Ths year has been good tranng. Should have the good for~une to be reapponted next year, wll be better equpped to perform my dutes n the future. Respectfully submtted, n Septroenber, wth the help of the Drector' s Secretary, Hss Mara Plal, welcobd the new students and asssted them n settlng n at the School and n copng wth the problems of adjustng to a foregn country. Durng the course of the year have asssted scholars and vstors to the School and have tred to make ther stay and r esearches as proftable as possble. Ths task was made easer by the well-known and wdely apprecated dedcaton of Mrs. Mare Fdao. Snce her retrement,!-rs. Jula Sarantopoulou, a cheerful successor 1 has mantaned the hgh s tandards of Lorng Hall. Many thanks are owed to both of them. Professor Elot and started plannng the 1976 Summer School program n late August, none too soon as t occurred, because of the ncreased demand for hotel space as a result of a booll n toursm for the canng sullller. am partcularly thankful for Professor Elot's expert advce and logstc experence whch have made me aware of the numerous problems that face such plannng. n consequence, next year s task wll be much easer. n October had the pleasure of speakng to the students at the ste of the Bronze Age remans near the Menelaon, excavatons of whch are beng carred out by the Brtsh School at Athens. Afterwards 1 wth the leave of the Drector, travelled to the Palace of Nestor to do feld work on ~ dssertaton. Another trp had been made n early September to t he Menelaon and to Nchora to study the archtecture of these stes. For permsson to make these studes, am ndebted to Professov McDonald and hs assstant, 1-!r. Roger Howell, and to Dr. Catlng, Drector of the Brtsh School, all of whose advce and encourage Bnt have been most helpful. A3de from ths work on my dssertaton, have fnshed a paper on an archac poros sphnx from Cornth, whch wll soon submt for publcaton, and have benefted from Professor Caskey s lvely semnar on the Early Bronze Age n Greece. At present our readng r oom can accomodate 24 readers at sx tables. n the near future vte must add two more tables and at least twelve chars. Books accessoned from 12 Aprl 1975 to 20 ~larch 1976 amount to ttles (n 1240 vo lumes), of whch 735 were gfts; these fgur es are approxmately the same as those reported last year. As usual, there s a consderable backlog of books watng to be catalogued and accessoned, partly because we are stll actvely engaged n r evsng old and nadequate catalogue cards. Mr s. Of the fellowshp appl.cants 1? took the archaeology exalllnatons, and 8 the lterature, Far ~ f4rst tme, we requred appl cants to send ther dossers and examnatons n quadl'j.lplcate, and each ruember of the Commttee was furnshed Wth hs own set. Cane of these matters are also ncl uded n the report of the Ad Hoc ammttee on Educatonal Polces whch 1B beng dscussed at~rs- 1

40 41 meetng of the.1. The Ad!assons Ca~~~~~ttee hopes to have an nput nto any decsons that mght be made n ths area. A.s for procedure, the Charman wshes to express some personal opnons. (1) Small as the nw>er of students nvolved may seem, the procedure that has developed over the years s extremely complcated and adj.nstratvely burdensaae. The present Charman has had an exceptonal amount of help from the Classcs Department a! the Unversty of North Carolna, whch f rembursement were asked for, would consttute a szeable SW. Even so, t s dffcult (and dstractng fr0111 the evaluaton of students) for the Charman to be responsble for so many ll&ll'lgs and collecton and dstrbuton of papel'8. rregulartes nevtably occur; ths wll not cease untl the paper work s taken over by a centrally located secretary of the School. No doubt other offcers and commttees have a smlar need. Mr. Hrsch's wll stpulates t hat hs fellowshp trust be "for the purpose of establshng scholarshps to assst young and talented students n the Unted States or n srael n Archaeologcal research." We propose therefore that the fellowshp be awarded annually to a student wrtng hs dssertaton or to a recent Ph.D. to complete a project, such as a dssertaton, for publcaton. The feld s to be Pre- classcal, Classcal, and Post-classcal archaeology, and the project MUSt requre substantal resdence n Greece wth Assocate Membershp at the School. The amount of the fellowshp s to be ncreased up to $5000, graduated accordng to need and qualfcaton. Applcaton wll be the same as for Assocate Membershp and examnatons wll not be requred. The Fellowshp Commttee wll handle ths fellowshp for the tme beng, unless n the future the number of applcatons s too burdensome. The Colll'llttee wll seek the advce of Glora Merker n Prnceton, Ehud Loeb at Hebrew Unversty, and the Drector of the School as requred by crcumstances. The fellowshp wll be advertsed on the regular poster. (2) After the examnatons and dossers have been read. the preferental lsts of the ndvdual members are combned nto a master lst. At ths pont numerous problems arse whch are very dffcult to settle by further rounds of letters, ndvdual telephone calls or even a conference call. n the opnon of the Charman, the only proper w~ of arrvng at a far overall judgment of the ndvdual students s a meetng. The expense of ths should be met out of the fellowshp funds. The Charman knows of no other fellowshp cojrttee that does not have such a meetng. (3) t takes at least a year to learn ths job even for one who has been on the commttee for sade tme. There s a danger that under the present rules the cha'lll&llshp mght rotate too rapdly. Three years of tenure ought to be the mnmum. Aprl 21, 1976 Respectfully submtted, Henry R.!11118rwahr 1 Charman Elzabeth G Caskey Wllam A. McDonald Evelyn L. Smthson Report~ the Jacob Hrsch Fellowshp Experence wth the Jacob Hrsch Fellowshp n the course of ths year ndcates the need for a more precse defnton. The fellowshp was awarded for the f.rst tme last year, to Mr. Kaplan from Harvard. Ths year t was lsted, but not defned, n the poster sent to the contrbutng nsttutons n September. Later n the fall, the Charlllan of the.1 and the Fello<~shp Comnt.ttee agreed that t was more approprate for the fellowshp to go to a l'8cent Fb.D. to do research n Greece as an Assocate Member of the School. A supplementary announcement was sent to contrbutng nsttutons that operate graduate programs; t was also made avalable to the srael unverstes through Ms. Glora Merker and n ths country at the Xmas meetngs. Ths dstrbuton was probably too narrow 1 for we receved only one applcaton f rom ths country and none from srael. The amount of the fellowshp ($3500) may also have been unattractve, and the uncertanty of the job market n ths country and the dffculty to get leave from srael unverstes on short notce probably kept canddates from applyng. We fnally awarded the fellowshp n consultaton wth the Drector to a person n Athens who has her dssertaton well n hand.

42 43 To~ Drector, REPORT OF THE DRECTOR OF SUMMER SESSON Arercan School of Classcal Studes at ~: have the hooor to r eport brefly oo the actvtes of the frst S\llldr Sesson of 1975, whch lasted from June 17th to Ju.ly 30th. The partcpants were unusually young (the oldest was 37) and the mxture was well balanced: sx undergraduates, seven graduate students, and sx hgh-school, college or unversty teachers. Members of the sesson were Blle Anderson (Eta Sgma Ph Scholar), Rachel Bradley, Peggy Bruca, Cathy Dooerty (Fel d Scholar), Sharon Fabrzo, Wll Freert, Wendy Gordon, Susan Graham, Dan Harmon, Ann Kttelson, Rebecca Mller, Kt Moss (Lord Scholar), Paul Petranos, Carlos Pcon (Hll Scholar), Camy Proctor, Tom Scanlon, Bert Stener, Barbara Tsakrgs and Charlotte Wtt. A l ate cancellaton enabled Margot Camp to partcpate selectvely n the program, and her contrbutons were extremely welcone and well receved. Betty Edmonson took on the role of den-aotber. The apartments were adequate for the most part, and Mrs Fdao' s thoughtful plannng and organzaton made our exposure to Lorng Hall a pleasure. All members of the School's staff were helpful as usual, but specal kudos must go to Bob Pounder, whose cheerful effcency was greatly mssed after hs departure n July, although Jm Wrght dd much to lessen the mpact. Professor Elot and Nancy Wnter were also conspcuously avalable and helpful, and specal thanks are gratefully tendered to them. U were to change one thng about the sesson t would be the war the dnners are handled on the trps. FacUltes n Greece have long snce surpassed the necesstr for members to be herded by the drector to a partcular abbreuvor, and nether the rdculous dolng out of "all-owances" nor rebursement for actual costs s sensble. would urge most strngl.y that n the.future: members be nformed that they wll be requred to pay for most of ther dnners on trps, and that an extra $100 wll be needed for ths purpose. Not only would ths delay the next nevtable ncrease n the basc fees, but, as we dscovered at Paror, Arachove and Krekouk, heghtens the enjoyment of an occasonal "banquet" for the entre group. The prncpal strength of the program contnues to be Greece, ts people and ts monuments, especally as seen through the eyes of the MnY s cholars who contrbute thelr tme and expertse so generously. here acknowledge my own debt and the gratt ude of all of us to llancy Bookds at Cornth, John Camp n the Agora, Bll Dnsmoor at Sounon (and waystat ons), Wlle Elot for a splendd mornng n and around the Parthenon(s), Eve Harrson for extended and exc tng sessons wth the sculpture of the Natonal and Acropols Museums, Tom Jacobsen and hs staff for a glmpse of ther work n the apotheke at Nauplon, Bll McDonald and hs staff for a tour of Nchora and tea wth John Chadwck at the "McDonald Hlton", Steve and Stella MUler at Ne1116a, oanns Sakellaraks and hs wfe Effe for ther exctng t U axena at Arkhanes Lesle Shear for hs unrvalled and generous noro\g}lness n the Agora, Evelyn Slllthson for her welc01116 gudance through the Keramekos and Praeus {wth ther three museums ), Eugene Vanderpool for hs wllngness to share hs unque expertse and enthusasm wth yet another band of plgrms at Delph, Frank Walton n hs beloved Gennadeon, and Charles Wllams for hs charmng Cornthan chauvnsm. We all learned a great deal, ut fere ft, and often unexpectedly. Certan experences n Thebes,'or nstace, focused our attenton on the fact that several Theban myths (Pentheus, Aktaon, Oedpus, etc. ) contan strong ele1116nts of voyeursm. There were many hghlght8, both ndvdual and shared, rangng from the "dscovery<' of post-classcal Greece to watchng the sun set beyond Helkon from the walls of Plataea. One 1116mber attempted a defntve corpus of phot~raphs of donkeys; another apparently essayed a compl~t of notes on Greek museums; a thrd tred to subsdze the pottery-replca ndustry; yet a fourth led an astronomcal apprecaton sesson n Andrtsana, etc. The consensus hghlght was unquestonably Bll Dnsmoor s modest but masterful explcaton of the remans at Sounon, but all of us came away wth our o~n further favortes-- and enrchments. t seems safe to say that for sx warm, busy, enervatne, actve, glorous weeks last summer, twenty- two of us felt closer t o Greece and ts gr eatness, to Homer and Herodotus, Kmon and Cavafy 1 Demosthenes and Doerpfeld, Percles and Pausanas, Thucyddes and ~heokrtos, Sophocles and 9efers, than would otherwse have been possble. For ths the drector and hs wfe are most apprecatve and jon the members of the group n thankng you and all others concerned for the opportunty. Respectfully submtted, Coln N. Edmonson Drector, Summer Sesson
