16 l 7 REPORT OF THE DRFCTOP To the Managng Commttee, Amercan School of Classcal Studes at Athens: have the honor to present a report of the actvtes of the ~mercan School of Classcal Studes at Athens from Aprl, 1975, through March The natonal uncertantes of last year contnue unresolved and, though outward calm obtans, the perplexng dffcultes ' of Cyprus, of tenson n the Aegean, and of the domestc economy gve rse to frustraton and unease. The foregn polcy of the Unted States contnues to be unversally deplored, as does, perhaps to a lesser degree, thst o f most of Western Europe. Scattered strkes, ncludng those hoth of the scholarlv staff of the Archaeologcal Servce and of the ouards of archaeologcal stes and museums, add nconvenence and rrtaton. n such condtons, t s especally gratfyng to report that the work of the School has gone on wthout serous!~pedment and, partcularly n our educatonal rrogram, wth Pven greater rchness than before. MarP Fdao's ~ecson to retre on November 1 caused sad~ess to all. Wth understandno sympathy for both staff and res1dents and wth unfalng grace and good taste, she had restored to the School a resdence at once dstngushed and warm; her effortless manner concealed from all but a few of us the hard work and worry whch the job exacted fro~ her. We are grateful not only for her achevewent but also for her example, now well followed by Jula Sarantopoulou. Though the staff remans otherwse lttle changed, tme has clamed two of the most fathful and nfluental of ts former members. Eurydce Demetrakopoulou, who, durno and after her thrty-two years as Assstant Lbraran of the-cennadeon provded unstntng gudance to readers and staff alke, eed on May 1, 1975, and Efstratos ~thanasades, bookkeeper and confessor to ~eneratons of me~bers, ded on March 4, As always, the success of our work owes ~uch to the oenerous help of our colleagues n the Drectorate General of Antqutes and Restoraton of the ~nstry of Culture and Scences. There, too, death has takpn an unexpected toll, wth the loss of Nkolaos KontolPon and roanns Konts, hoth recent nspectors C.P.neral, an~ of Yanns Mlans, lonq Erhor of thp Pkropols. The vcxno qupstons of pl~nnpd ndustral development at Pylos and of nternal organzaton dsrupted harmony wthn the Servce and led, at varous t~ps, to strkes bv ts personnel an~ to the resgnaton ~f the Archaeoloqcal Councl. We are, therefore, 1 Ths account s to be read n conjuncton wth the followng reports, and the mportant aspects of the School's work wth whch they deal are here omtted. oubly grateful to nspector General Demetros Lazardes and hs taff for ther successful efforts to mnmze the dsrupton to ur own work whch these events, combned wth the perennally eavy burden of work borne by understaffe~ offces, mght well ave produced. Owng to the state of our fnances, mprovements and repars o the physcal plant have agan, perhaps unwsely, been confned 0 the mmedately essental; further delay of some projects, otably exteror pantng of Lorng Hall, could cause dama~e to he fabrc of the bul~ nos, and provson for them must be made n the next budget. Unlke last year, Lorng Hall has enjoye~ nearly full ccupancy, and jt s a trhutp to ts contnung charre that a substantnl ncrease n room-rates, ntroduced on January 1, has had no apprecjable effect on demand. The result has been a small reducton n the OpPratno defct; after the retrement of Katna Kalogrdou on Aprl 1, WP shall exppr~ent wth a smaller staff, n the hope of further mprovement n ts econo~y. n the sprng an~ summer, n addton to the School 's work at the Agora and n Cornth, here separately reported, ~lolf Rudolph carred out a fnal season of excavaton at Hales for ndana Unversty n co-operaton wth the Unversty of Pennsylvana, Stephen Mller conducted a second season at Nemea for the Unversty of Calforna at Berkeley, and Henry Robnson carred on hs work at Terrple Hll n Cornth for Case Western Reserve Unversty. n connecton wth preparaton of publcaton, John Caskey made very lmted tests at Agha rn n Keos for the Unversty of Cncnnat, and conducted a smlar program for the nsttute of Fne Arts, New York Unversty, n Samothrace. The lst of Members for the Regular Sesson appears elsewhere. Twenty Regular ~embers, the largest number n my experence, somewhat lessened the effcency of the fall trps and reduced the opportunty of Assocate ~embers, spouses and vstors to partcpate, but t proved a manageable maxmum, and the response of the ~embers has been generally postve. The fall trps, led hy C. W. ~. Elot, Charles Wllams and me, covered famlar qround: Central C.reece and Thessalv, Macedona and Thrace (ncudnq a stormv stay n Sareothrace), south and west Peloponnesos, an~ the Argold and rorntha. We are grateful to colleagues who lent ther expertse at varous stes, notably Photos Petsas (Thessalonk), nemetros Lazardes (Amphpols), Wolf Koengs And ~lk Trand (Olympa), James Wrght (Menelaon) Frederck C00per (Bassae), anc Nancy Bookds (Cornth). Durng the wnter term, n addton to our regular topographcal courses, whch shared wth Professor Elot and to whch John Camp and Gottfred Gruben contrbuted, and semnars ~ven by the Vstng Professors, we were able to offer sessons n museums, led by Judth Bnder and Nancy Bookds (Akropols Museum),

18 19 John Caskey, Evelyn Harrson, Jerome Sperlng, and Eugene Vanderpool (Natonal Museum), Lesle Threatte (Epgraphcal Museum), and Alan Wa l ker (Agora cons). John Camp agan provded an ntroducton to e xcavaton pottery at the Agora, and Dave J ordan has agan organzed an epcrraphcal dscusson qr oup, whch ths year has brought together nterested scholars from the Br tsh and French Schools a nd from the Fpgraphcal ~useu~ as well as our own Members. Professor Elot reports on the eytraordnar ly fne "Thursdays-after- tea" whch he adrotly o r chestrated. ~n e xpe rment n classes n modern Greek, ove n n our SeMnar Poom by a teache r from the Hellenc-Amer can llnon, unfortunately only a qualfed success, occuned nearly all remanno weekday hours, and Professor Vand~rpool never lacked company on hs Saturday walks. Members who attempted all could well cowplan of the rchness of the pro ffered det. We have concluded our wnter actvtes wth the Ope n ~eetno, held n the Lbrary on ~ arch 15, n whch, after ~y bref account of Amercan Excavatons n 1975, Professor Caskey r evewed the progress and results of h s eycavatons j~ Keos. Hs F.xcel l e ncy, The Presdent of the Republc, and ~rs. Tsatsos honored us hy ther attendance and were part o f an over-capacty crowd. The precedng paragraphs and the reports whch foll Ov/ show, n spte o f new detals, a famlar cour se of the School's actvte t s a course whch s lkel y to cha nge n the comng years, through the appo ntment of new s t aff and through fnancal necessty. t s now that the dr ecton o f change should be determned by the Managng Comm ttee. On June 30, Francs Walton w ll r etre fro~ the Drectorshp of the Gennadus Lbrarv, and C. W. J. Elot wll leave the Professorshp of Archaeology to return t o ranada; a vear later s hall make way for a new Drector. The opportunty exsts, as seldo~ hefore, to determne, throuoh the selpcton o f senor offcers a ~d the descrpton of t he r posts, the course whch t he School wll follow n the next vears. As we have r ecently lear ned, the neans of the School are no longer adequate to support al l of our. present actvtes n ther present for m. Although, owno to the fortunately strong poston o f the dollar n the past months, our defct may, ths year, fall short of the e normous fqure t hat had been estmated, costs contnue to rse at an alarmno rate, and the prog le~ w ll not vansh of ts own accorrl. As have wrtten before, we must ether fnd a consderable sum of new money or restrct our act vty. To do ether n the best nt erests of the School, we need a clear vew of the prortes among the School's varous actvtes. The general terms n whch rased ths pont last year dd not, perhaps, carry suffcent urgency, but subsequen t deve lopments show the problem more clearly. For example, t he ntal plan to demo t e the Professorshp of Archaeology to a j unor post, now happly abandoned, suggested a low prorty for the School's educatonal program, though doubt that anyone so nt ended t. The falure to ap~ont a new Drector of the Gennad us Lbrary now draws att e nt ~on to tha t center, a ~n more ch examples wll arse. Salvno such budqetary quest~ons ~~ecemeal, wthout a determned set of prortes, s sur7 to lead to nequty and qute possbly to a chapqe of emph a s~s amana the School' s actvtes contrary to the ntentons o f the Managng Commttee. There s now both the opportunty and the necessty.to decde the course o f the School. t s too easy for us ~n Athens to overvalue those actvtes n whch we are, ou~selve s, mmersed and to work for the support of those ac t~vt es alone. f we are to hudget our resources we 11, however, ve must do so n a way whch satsfes the School' s basc prortes, and to do that, we need t o know what those prortes now are. 31 March 1976 Bespectfully submtted, James R. McCrede Drector

'l'o lhc Drector, 20 REPORT OF THE PROFESSOP OF ARCHhEOLOGY Amercan School of Classcal Studes at Athens : have the honour to submt to you the followng account of my actvtes snce my last report sent from Canada. 1 contnued on leave untl the end of June, spendng Jl.prl at Trent Unversty, Peterborough, wher e on Aprl 26 t ook part n a symposum n cel ebraton of the 75th brthday of Glbert Bagnan; the proceedngs of ths occason are at the press. n early May gave lectures n Ottawa and tha~a. an0 on V&y 16 returned to Athens, where contnued my studes of Thomas D. Whtcombe n t he Gennadeon. At the en~ of June travelled to Ankara by way of Asses. resumed my re:gular dules n July, thus allowng the D rector to go to Samothr ace f or two months. Unlk~ 1974, the summer of 1975 was quet, and the School ' s vared actvtes were carred out under normal condtons. On the D rector's return, took a short holday, vstng stes n Central and Southern Greece n prepar aton for the autumn. My role n the progr am of the regular sesson 1975/76 has been the t r adtonal one. led the trps to Boeota, Phoc1s, and Thessaly, and to Lacona, Messena, and Arcada, thus havng the pleasure of clmbng both ctadels of Orchomenos; and shared wth the Drector the responsblty for the Topography and t-lonuments of Athens and Attca. have also helped to organze the recent addton to our Athenan week, "Thursdays at Sx, " a seres of lectures gven n Lorng Hall after tea durng the wnter, sometmes on days other that thf epcrytrous. Ths year the members of the Brtsh School \o~ere nvted to attend, and the audence averaged about 50. t s worth r ecordng the ltst of speaker s a nrl ther topcs, for togeth~r they llustrat that the School ' s concern wth Cl asscal Studes, wth ~11 that car ~c descrbed as "Greek thought and lfe," s stll very ~uch alv-'!: ravd Jordan, "New Epgr aphr:al Evdence for Late Pa~an Hymnody ; " Carolne Koehler, "ntrgues of the Cornthan Contaner ndustry;" Helen Nort h, "Combng and Curlng - Summus Orator~ ; George My l onas, "Recent Excavatons at Mycenae;" Karl Petruso, "Topcs n Aegean Pure and Appled Scence;" Jack Davs, "Pare Cycladc Brds and Ther Mgratons;" Euqene Vanderpool, "T~" State rrson of Ancent At hens ; " J ohn Sakellaraks, "Myconaean Stone Vases; " Sper os Vryons, "The Byzantne Legacy and C\ttorr<ln For ms;" Ernestne Fredl, "The Roles of 1-Jomen and 1en: Nhat ''le Can Learn from Hunters and Gatherers;" and \lassos Karaaeorchs, "Excavatons at Kton." - 2l And now t ur n to my last few rronths as Professor of Arc~aeology. t already looks lke a hectc tme: l~ctures ~n 1thens and Salonka on John Galt; the essay on George l'lhtler to flnsh; a ten-day_school t to Northwest Greece wth more than a dozen volunteers; f~nal r~~~arch on \-lhtcombe; pctures to be taken for futur e lec~ure~; and packng. n the mddle of June hope to go to Pner.ur1ur ~o r the last major season of excavaton. shall probably b~ back n Athens brefly n August. And then to Canada, to t-1ount P.llson unversty n Sackvlle, N.B. Aft er fve years of nt~ate nvolvement n the lfe of the school, have many debts of grattude to adm~, above.all to the nstt ut on for remanng true to ts founder s ntent1ons that t prove a "School of Classcal Studes. " Ths constancy s not a reluctance, or even a refusal, to change, but an acknowledgerr.ent that member s stl l come to be taught, not only that th~y ~ay become arc haeol ogsts, but also classcsts and hstor1ans of art. n the past fve years, of 83 f r st-year member s 47 (or 57%) were nterested prmarly n archaeology or a r t, and of these 9 (or 11%) were commtted to p rehstory. The reman1ng 4 3% wer e her e because they beleved our progr am to b~ of use n the educaton of those studyng the lterat ure, h~story, or phlosophy of Greece. The proposed appontment of the Hello~ Professor of Classcal Studes s happy recognton ~f o~e Slce of our teachng msson. But there s stll our obl1gat1on to manta~n the professonal study of archaeology and ar ~. To ~~ese ends the School clearly needs a practsng a r chaeolog1st on l - S regular staff; and t could easly make use of another ~emrer wth competence n the general feld of art. must also thank wth partcular warwth all the Members of the staff Amercan and Greek, for ther dependable help and suppor t what~ver the crcumstances. That have enjoyed ~Y stay here s mostly ther responsblty. Of ther nl~ber hcpe no. one wll be offended f pck out thr> Drector and rtrs. ~1cCred1e for specal menton. After all, they are our close frencs, and we shall mss them. F nally, thnk t rght to make publc my debt to ny wfe. One of the reasons she favour ed our return to Greece 1t1as that jt pr omsed her an opportunty to resume under the best condtons her p rehstorc studes, partcularly those at Kea. After our frst year her e, howeve r, t was obvous to us that n fact she wo uld have to work to help meet t he costs of our faml y. For t he l ast three years she has held a full-tme teachng post at the Amercan Co~~unty Schools, and wthout ths second source of ncome we could not have met our obl gatons. As a famly o,.re a r e all most grateful to her, and appr ecate the extent of her sacr fce. Respectfully submtted, c J. r:lot P~ofessor of Archaeology

Because of Professor Pounder's effcency and consderaton, the School offce was n order and the transton was smoothly accanplshed. Only a few weeks of the SUJ8r Sesson remaned and thanks to the experence of the drectors, Professors Edllonson and Tracy, had only to perform the normal, daly functons of the offce. 23 n February or&anzed a party gven by the student members of the School for ther counterparts at the other foregn schools. Durn(; the course of the year have asssted scholars and vstors to the School and h~tve tred to make ther stay and researches as proftable as possble. Ths task was made easer by the well-known and wdely apprecated dedcaton of Mrs. Mare Fdao. Snce her retrement, Mrs. Jula Sarantopoulou, a cheerful successor, has ma.ntaned the h~ standards of Lorng Hall. Many thanks are owed to both ot them. Workng on dssertaton on cave use n Attca Massachusetts Avenue, 58 w, Cambrdge, MA nqures and appl catons were davn ths year from the astronomcal fgures of last year. The Chanlan corresponded wth over 80 persons (about a quarter of them college senors) and 43 made applcaton. However, only 18 took the fellowshp examnatons, 8 appled for regular B!bershp, and 12 for a.ssocate, Of the f ellowshp applcants 1? took the archaeology exal'llnatons, and 8 the lterature. For ~ f~rst tme, we requred applcants to send ther dossers and examnatons n quadruplcate 1 and each 1118mber of the Commttee was furnshed Wth hs own set. Ths has worked very well (except that t "<lkes a lot of work for the Chal'lllall) and wll be contnued. we also coded the exaj11natons so that they could be read anonymously whle n the opnon of the Charnlan ths procedure makes lttle dtfference t does no harm and wll also be contnued. The me111bers of the COla- ' lllttee also read the doesers and examnatons of applcants for regular membershp and the dossers of applcants for assocate membershp, except for late appllcatons Whch were read by the CharUl only. 7 Th~ Commttee s revewng at ths t.me both the procedures and the ~rl.ncples of admsson to the School and the award.ng of fellowshps, cae of these matters are also ncluded n the report of the Ad Hoc Commttee on Educatonal Polces whch 1s beng dscussed at~r;-

40 Eetng af the.1. The Admssons Caattee hopes to haw an nput nto any decsom that mght be made 1n ths area. A.s for procedure, the Charman wshes to express some personal opnom. (1) Small 8.5 the nun>er of students nvolved may see11, the procedure that has developed over the years s extremely complcated and a.dm1.nstrat1vely burdemclle. The present Charman has had an exceptonal amount of help from the Classcs Department o! the Unversty at North Carol na, whch 1f rembursement were asked for, would co'lbttute a szeable sum. Even so, t s dffcult (and dstractng from the evaluaton of students) for the Charman to be responsble for so 11111ey aalngs and collecton and dstrbuton of papers. rregulartes nevtably occur; ths wll not cease \Ultll the paper work 1a taken over by a centrally located secretary at the School. No doubt ot her offcers and commttees have a smlar need. Mr. Hrsch' s wll stpulates that hs fellowshp trust be "for the purpose at establshng scholarshps to assst young and talented students n the Unted States or 1n srael n Archaeologcal research. " We propose therefore that the fellowshp be awarded annually to a student wrtng hs dssertaton or to a recent Ph.D. to complete a project, such as a dssertaton, for publcaton. The feld 1s to be Pre- classcal, Classcal, and Post- classcal archaeology, and the project must requre substantal resdence n Greece wth Assocate Membershp at the School. The amount of the fellowshp s to be ncreased up to $5000, graduated accordng to need and qualfcaton. Applcaton wll be the s a me as for Assocate Membershp and examnat ons wll not be requred. The Fellowshp Commttee wll handle ths fellowshp for the tme beng, unless n the future the number of applcatoos s too burdensome. The Col!l!lttee wll seek the advce at Glora Merker n Prnceton, Ehud Loeb at Hebrew Unversty, and the Drector at the School as requred by crcumstances. The fellowshp wll be advert sed on the regular poster. (2} After the examnatons and dossers have been read the preferental lsts at the ndvdual members are cobned nto a master lst. At ths pont numerous problems arse whch are very dffcult to settle by further ro\uld.s of letters, ndvdual telephone calls or even a conference call. n the opnon of the Charman, the only proper w~ of arrvng at a far overall judgment at the ndvdual students s a meetng. The expense at ths should be met out at the fellowshp funds. The Charman knows at no other fellowshp comnttee that does not have such a meetn&. (3) t takes at least a year to learn ths job even for one who has been on the commttee for SaDe tne. There s a danger that under the present rules the chartllallshp mght rotate too rapdly. Three years of tenure ought to be the mnmum. Aprl 21, 1976 Respectfully submtted, Henry R.!1111Brwahr, Charman Elzabeth G. Caskey Wllam A. McDonald Evelyn L. Smthson Report ~ the ~ Hrsch Fellowshp Experence wth the Jacob Hrsch Fellowshp n the course of ths year ndcates the need for a more precse defnton. The fellowshp was awarded for the f.rst tme last year, to Mr. Kaplan from Harvard. Ths year t was lsted, but not defned, n the poster sent to the contrbutng Mttutons 1n September. Later n the fall, the Charman at the.1 and the Fellowshp Connttee agreed that t was more approprate for the fellowshp to go to a rscent Ph.D. to do research n Greece as an Assocate Keznber of the School. A supplementary anno\ulcement was sent to contrbutng nsttutons that operate gr aduate programs; t was also made avalable to the srael unverstes through Ms. Glora Merker and n ths country at the Xmas meetngs. Ths dstrbuton was probably too narrow, for we receved only one applcaton from ths country and none from srael. The ajl\ount at the fellowshp ($)500) may also have been \Ulattractve, and the uncertanty at the job market n ths country and the dffculty to get leave from srael unverstes on shor t notce probably kept canddates from applyng. We fnally awarded the fellowshp n consultaton wth the Drector to a person n Athens who has her dssertaton well n hand.

43 To the Drector, REP<RT OF THE DRECTOR OF SUMMER SESSOO AJQercan ~ of Classcal Studes at ~: have the honor to report brefly on the actvtes of the frst Summer Sesson of 1975, whch lasted from June 17th to July 30th. The partcpants were unusually yoo.ng (the oldest was 37) and too 1111Xture was well balanced: sx undergraduates, seven graduate students, and sx hgh-school, college or unversty teachers. Members of the sesson were Blle Anderson (Eta Sgma Ph Scholar), Rachel Bradley, Peggy Bruca, cathy Dcherty (Feld Scholar), Sharon Fabrzo, Wll Freert, Wendy Gordon, Susan Graham, Dan Harmon, Ann Kttelson, Rebecca Mller, Kt Moss (Lord Scholar), Paul Petranos, Carlos Pc&n (Hll Scholar), Carxy Proctor, Tom Scanlon, Bert Stener, Barbara Tsakrgs and Charlotte Wtt. A late cancellaton enabled Margot Camp to partcpate selectvely n the program, and her contrbutons were extrelll8ly welcome and well receved. Betty Edmonson tock on the role of den-mother. The apart1118nts were adequate for the most part, and Mrs. Fdao s thoughtful plannng and organzaton made ou.r exposure to Lorng Hall a pleasure. All men>ers of the School's staff were helpful as usual, but specal kudos must go to Bob Pounder, whose cheerful effcency was greatly mssed after hs departure n July, although Jll\ Wrght dd much to lessen the mpact. Professor Elot and Nancy Wnter were also conspcuously avalable and helpful, and specal thanks are gratefully tendered to thej. f were to change one thng about the sesson t would be the way the dnners are handled on the trps. FacUltes n Greece have long snce surpassed t he necessty for members to be herded by the drector to a partcular abbreuvor, and nether the rdculous dolng out of "allowances" nor rebursement for actual costs s sensble. would urge most strngly that n too future: members be ntonned that they wll be requred to pay for most of ther dnners on trps, and that an extra $100 wll be needed for ths purpose. Not only would ths delay the next nevtable ncrease n the basc fees, but, as we dscovered at P!B'or, Arachove and Krekouk, heghtens the enjoyment of an occasonal "banquet" for the entre group. The prncpal strength o.f the program contnues to be Greece, ts people and ts monuments, especally as seen through the eyes of the many scholars who contrbute thelr tme and expertse so generously. here a\:knowledge 11\Y own debt and the grattude of all of us to?laney Bookds at Cornth, John Camp n the Agora, Bll Dnsmoor at Sounon (and waystatons), Wlle Elot for a splendd mornng n and around the Parthenon(s), Eve Harrson for extended and exctng sessons wth the sculpture of the Natonal and Acropols Museums, Tom Jacobsen and hs staff.for a glmpse of ther work n the apotheke at Nauplon, Bll McDonald and hs staff for a tour of Nchora and tea wth John Chadwck at the "McDonald Hlton", Steve and Stella Mller at Ne1118a, oanns Sakellaraks and hs wfe Effe for ther exctng ~Uaxena at Arkhanes, Lesle Shear for hs unr valed and generous oro\lghness n the Agora, Evelyn Slllthson for her welc~ gudance throug)l the Keramekos and Praeus (wth ther three museums), Eugene Vanderpool for hs wllngness to share hs unque expertse and enthusasm wth yet another band o.f plgrms at Delph, Frank Walton n hs beloved Gennadeon, and Charles Wllams for hs charmng Cornthan chauvnsm. We all learned a great deal, ut fere ft, and often unex}'8ctedly. Certan experences n Thebes, "?or nst:a1ce, focused our attenton on the fact that several Theban myths (Pentheus, Aktaon, Oedpus, etc. ) contan strong elements of voyeursm. There were many hghlghts, both ndvdual and shared, rangng from the "dscoverr of post-classcal Greece to watchng the sun set beyond Helkon from the walls of Plataea. One member attempted a defntve corpus of phot~raphs of donkeys; another apparently essayed a complet:e!set of notes on Greek museums; a thrd tred to subsdze the pottery-replca ndustry; yet a fourth led an a.strono111cal apprecaton sesson n Andrtsana, etc. The consensus hghlght was unquestonably Bll Dnsmoor s modest but masterful explcaton or the remans at Sounon, but al.l of us came away wth our o..,n further.favortes-- and enrchments. t seems safe to say that for sx warm, busy, enervatng, actve, glorous weeks last summer, twenty- two of us felt closer to Greece and ts greatness, to Homer and Herodotus, Krnon and Cavafy, Demosthenes and Doerpfeld, Percles and Pausanas, Thucyddes and 'J.:heokrtos, Sophocles and 3e!ers, than would otherwse have been possble. For ths the drector and hs wfe are most apprecatve and jon the members of the group n thankng you and all ot hers concerned for the opportunty. Respectfully submtted, Coln N. Wthn the current funds group, fund balances restrcted by outsde sources are so ndcated and are dstngushed from unrestrcted funds allocated to specfc purposes by acton of the Managng Commttee. Externally r e strcted funds may only be utlzed n accordance w th the purposes establshed by the source of such funds and are n contrast wth unrestrcted funds over whch the Managng Commttee retans full control to use n achevng any of ts nsttutonal purposes.
