9 photo: Andreas J Focke photo: Andreas J Focke Public Passage Alter Hof Alter Hof Munich Passages are often regarded as no more than a link between A and B and that is usually what they look like, too: anonymous and non-designed Small wonder that such urban spaces quickly deteriorate into places you would rather avoid Pfarré Lighting Design created the reverse - a passage so inviting that you would willingly go out of your way to walk through it This passage takes the form of a flight of steps that runs through the former imperial residence of Munich, the Alter Hof Thanks to the bronze sheets cladding walls and ceiling, the space has a distinctive, warm character The variously sized sheets are arranged in vertical bands with every so often a gap for recessed white fibre optics which present as subtle light slits The main lighting is integrated with the underside of the specially designed handrail in the middle of the stair With the aid of reflectors, the light shines down onto the granite treads from where it is bounced upwards to reflect off the bronze sheeting 2006 Main designer, Artist Auer+Weber Pfarré Lighting Design City of Munich Kirsten_Hannema photo: Stefan Mueller-Naumann The passage connects the Alter Hof with the Sparkassenstrasse 9

10 photo: Marloes Faber photo: Marloes Faber Church San Benedetg Caplutta Sogn Benedetg Sumvitg Switzerland This Zumthor church in a small village located in the Mountains is a cylinder that turns into an oval and then into a keel: the geometry of this church, however definite, is also dynamic and elusive to the eye, all this exacerbated by the implantation of the building on a steep slope The church has a wooden construction and the façade is made with wooden shingles, wooden snips, similar to the locally build houses The building is very carefully detailed even on places you would normally not come (like behind the concrete stairs of the entrance) The setting is wonderful 1988 Peter Zumthor City of Sumvitg Marloes_Faber photo: Marloes Faber You can visit the church daily apart from Sunday Take the car to Sumvitg in the canton of Graubünden In this village is one road up to San Benedigt (different ways to write) It's about a km tough climbing for the car In San Benedigt it is easy to find your way to the church 10

13 photo: Stefan Müller-Naumann photo: Stefan Müller-Naumann Münich-Riem Church Centre Platz der Menschenrechte Munich In this shared church centre for Catholic and Protestant believers, architect Florian Nagler defined the spatial presence of the church in terms of urban planning Free-standing Catholic and Protestant churches, each with its own spire, would have been farcical, so instead Nagler has housed the mix of spaces in an ensemble that presents itself outwardly in a snow-white shell: in situ-concrete walls faced with white painted brick surround the complex, giving it a sacred aura The two church spaces are identifiable from the outside by full-length concrete lamellae the Protestant church rather spartan, based on a square floor plan, the Catholic slightly more luxurious, with expressively designed windows and a trapezoid floor plan The meeting halls, nursery, administrative offices and clergy accommodation are arranged around two courtyards There is no sense of a dominant architectural figure here; on the contrary, the church centre fits in excellently with the surrounding buildings 2005 Florian Nagler Kirchenzentrum München-Riem Ursula_Baus photo: Stefan Müller-Naumann Located in the Munich-Riem area U-Bahn station 'Messestadt-West' is nearby 13

17 Student Housing at Munchen Enzianstrasse Garching This hall of residence is located near a university campus on the outskirts of Munich The project is found in the confines of the metropolitan area on a plot that is right next to lands used for agriculture The location of university grounds on the outskirts of cities was a common practice of Modern zoning which often took these areas to very inconvenient places This segregated student life from the rest of urban life Besides the mention of urban planning, the building presents an interesting solution to the elements of the façade and a varied typology, though lacking spaces for interaction or any common element for that matter photo: Michael Heinrich Project is not public!
