2 photo: photo: Bonneshof Office Center Am Bonneshof Düsseldorf A modern module in the further development of a complete site: in the northern Düsseldorf district of Golzheim, RKW realised the Bonneshof Office Centre (BOC), an extension to the 2007 TOC office building It is RKW's ninth building project in the immediate neighbourhood Designed for the user KPMG, the BOC is based on an end block with four parallel wings extending at right angles from it that not only enmeshes with the neighbouring buildings, but also manages to offer many views out and connections with the outside world Internally the building is clearly laid out and defined by strong movement axes, such as the grand central corridor on the ground floor A bistro and a series of conference rooms with a park view are located behind the reception The corridors in the upper floors, on the other hand, are main movement routes used for everyday activities, with printing and photocopying points, staff tearooms and part-time working zones photo: Marcin Brzezicki Project is not public! 4 Maximiliansforum Maximilianstrasse Munich In the 1970's a traffic belt was placed around the city center of Munich which also cut the exclusive Maximilianstraße with its showrooms, galleries, studio theatres and the national theatre This pedestrian tunnel is the relict of plans for an unconstructed tunnel under the old city ring road at this junction It was not suitable for reunifying the divided streets During the revival a public place of art was created 3 Movable glass doors or walls create various space solutions: one big closed room, two opposite side spaces or an open accessible space This make the space suitable for different uses: art exhibition, permanent installation and parties The art space entrance can be found next to the bamboo overgrown moving stairs It is an underground space for returning art into the midst of life and also for reanimating art and nightlife A pedestrian subway as an art room and as a night bar Once a month, art, DJs and barkeepers will make it into an underground location Floor area/size m² Peter Haimerl Bau- und Kulturreferat Munich Naomi 24/7 Located at the Karl-Scharnagi-Ring, minutes walking from the old town Tram 19 passes the Maximilianstrasse 4

5 Five Courtyards Theatinerstrasse Munich In the 20th century this area used to be Munich's central banking district As the various banks merged into one it was suddenly found that the entire area belonged to one entity So in 1998 the HypoVereinsbank decided to move their offices elsewhere and transform the remaining buildings into a modern center for shopping, restaurants & cafes, art galleries (among which the Kunsthalle der Hypo-Kulturstiftung), office space, and residential apartments and public art This network of passages and inner courtyards is an absolute pleasure to stroll through The Fünf Höfe is literally an area of five connected courtyards Every section has its own character In one area there are giant ivies over 10 meters long - hanging from the ceiling Another courtyard is actually a hortus conclusus Many other designers contributed to the gesamtkunstwerk Floor area/size m² Main designer, Landscape architect Herzog and De Meuron Burger + Tischer Landschaftsarchitekten Hilmer & Sattler and Albrecht Ivano Gianola Naomi The Fünf Höfe is located in the very heart of the city, just a few hundred meters from Marienplatz The Fünf Höfe is located between Theatinerstraße, Salvatorstraße, Maffeistraße, and Kardinal-Faulhaber-Straße The five courtyards are called Amirahof, Maffeihof, Perusahof, Portiahof, and Viscadihof 5

6 Apartment and Commercial Building Herrnstrasse Herrnstraße Munich The 'Wohn- und Geschäftshaus am Herrnstrasse' in the old centre has a strong interaction between opening and closing Every second element in the floor-to-ceiling glazing is a sliding door The anthracite-brown galvanized window frames give the inner layout a maximum flexibility - and together with the wave-shaped sunscreens, the building has an ever changing appearance according to the weather On the roof top an intimate wooden penthouse is placed, with large windowsills, made out of oak wood The underground car park can be reached by an auto lift Project is not public! 2000 Herzog and De Meuron Naomi The building is located in the city centre, in between Isartor and Marienplatz, near the Parkhaus at the tourist attraction Hofbräuhaus 6

7 Museum Brandhorst Theresienstrasse 35a Munich The building of Sauerbruch Hutton architects from Berlin is a long, two-storey, rectangular structure abutting a considerably higher, trapezium-shaped section that widens to the north The precise contours of both parts are linked by a continuous ribbon glazing that culminates in the generous glazed area at the main entrance Here a corner window running the full height of the building cuts boldly through the structure to the North West, ensuring that the spacious foyer with the museum ticket desk, bookshop and restaurant receive natural light from three sides and enjoy different views All galleries have white walls and wooden floorboards of solid Danish oak which provide a neutral background for the artworks Their lightness, colours and materials ensure a naturally airy atmosphere The façade looks like an abstract painting and draws attention to the building s function as an art museum It comprises various layers with different functions photo: Christian Beirle González Sauerbruch Hutton s christian_02 Tram: Line 27: alight at Pinakotheken Underground: U2/U8: alight at Königsplatz or Theresienstrasse, U3/U6: alight at Odeonsplatz or Universität Bus: Line 154: alight at Schellingstrasse & Line 100: alight at Maxvorstadt The Museum Brandhorst is situated in the north-eastern corner of the Kunstareal that includes the Alte and Neue Pinakothek museums as well as the Pinakothek der Moderne With its entrance at the junction of Tuerkenstrasse and Theresienstrasse the Museum Brandhorst forms a 7

9 photo: Christian Beirle Gonzalez photo: Christian Beirle Gonzalez U-Bahn Marienplatz Neues Rathaus Munich Among the differently designed stations in Munich, the central changing station Marienplatz has a special role The station is the most heavily used in the entire subway network Alexander Freiherr von Branca designed it in bright orange, dark blue and dark green Von Branca was also responsible for the changes in construction during the years , when new parts of the station were carefully integrated into the already existing concept Between 2003 and 2006, two approximately 100m long tunnels were carved in parallel to the platforms, connected in the form of a gallery to the present platform via 11 archways After the construction of the second principal S-Bahn (city and suburban railway), the route will be completed These tunnels, at their Northern ends, will then also provide access to the new S-Bahn station Marienhof photo: Christian Beirle Gonzalez 2006 Alexander Freiherr von Branca christian_02 Subway Stations U3 and U6, all S-Bahn stations 9

10 photo: Andreas J Focke photo: Andreas J Focke Public Passage Alter Hof Alter Hof Munich Passages are often regarded as no more than a link between A and B and that is usually what they look like, too: anonymous and non-designed Small wonder that such urban spaces quickly deteriorate into places you would rather avoid Pfarré Lighting Design created the reverse - a passage so inviting that you would willingly go out of your way to walk through it This passage takes the form of a flight of steps that runs through the former imperial residence of Munich, the Alter Hof Thanks to the bronze sheets cladding walls and ceiling, the space has a distinctive, warm character The variously sized sheets are arranged in vertical bands with every so often a gap for recessed white fibre optics which present as subtle light slits The main lighting is integrated with the underside of the specially designed handrail in the middle of the stair With the aid of reflectors, the light shines down onto the granite treads from where it is bounced upwards to reflect off the bronze sheeting 2006 Main designer, Artist Auer+Weber Pfarré Lighting Design City of Munich Kirsten_Hannema photo: Stefan Mueller-Naumann The passage connects the Alter Hof with the Sparkassenstrasse 10

12 Mercedes-Benz Centre Arnulfstrasse Munich The transparent building offers optimal show possibilities on one of the busiest traffic bridges in Europe The completely glass structure looks like an over-sized display window and together withe the 65 meter tall, elliptical glass tower, it marks the western entrance to the city centre (from munich-archand desing; teneues) From me: Nice showroom and museum, not so good like "Mercedes Centre in Berlin" or "Bmw Welt" but anyway, you can make photos, and sit in almost every new car The elevation make the best attraction in the night 2002 LAI Architekten Mercedes-Benz pkrajewski_pl The Showroom is open on Monday - Friday: Saturday: Sunday: hr Tel or infomuenchen@mercedes-benzde 12

13 Office Complex Nymphe Nymphenburgerstrasse 3 Munich The project is divided into five buildings, some of which are interconnected The first building raised on Nymphenburger Strasse is a 10-story high-rise through which an open passageway leads into a quiet, planted inner courtyard The remaining buildings are grouped around a pavilion located in the center of the courtyard The office ensemble on Stiglmaierplatz is in a central yet tranquil location Mostly undisturbed by trends, Walter & Bea Betz have created buildings that continually emphasize the value of atmospheric qualities that sensually convey architecture to its users Their fields of work are office and administrative buildings, school and university buildings, residential buildings and complexes, and cultural facilities Al the buildings with their signature have irregular floor plans and large, clear surfaces photo: Christian Beirle González Project is not public! 14 BMW Welt Am Olympiapark Munich ure has been very popular with car makers in recent years; one after the other they have embarked on high-visibility branding exercises Mercedes Benz engaged UN Studio to design a Mercedes museum in Stuttgart, and in the same city Porsche is building a museum designed by Delugan Meissl Meanwhile, in Paris, Citroen has just taken delivery of a new showroom on the Champs Elysées With 'car architecture', as with the cars themselves, each new project looks bigger, more streamlined and faster than the one before Coop Himmelb(l)au designed a spectacular steel and glass tornado for BMW World, 'a centre for brand experience and vehicle delivery' The new building complements the striking four-cylinder head office (Karl Schwanzer, 1973) and the adjacent, shell-shaped BMW museum Set on a corner plot, the double-conical structure with event room fans out into a sculptural roof beneath which the customer lounges are suspended in the main hall 2007 Coop Himmelb(l)au BMW pkrajewski_pl 14
