2 photo: Piotr Krajewski photo: Piotr Krajewski BMW Welt Am Olympiapark Munich ure has been very popular with car makers in recent years; one after the other they have embarked on high-visibility branding exercises Mercedes Benz engaged UN Studio to design a Mercedes museum in Stuttgart, and in the same city Porsche is building a museum designed by Delugan Meissl Meanwhile, in Paris, Citroen has just taken delivery of a new showroom on the Champs Elysées With 'car architecture', as with the cars themselves, each new project looks bigger, more streamlined and faster than the one before Coop Himmelb(l)au designed a spectacular steel and glass tornado for BMW World, 'a centre for brand experience and vehicle delivery' The new building complements the striking four-cylinder head office (Karl Schwanzer, 1973) and the adjacent, shell-shaped BMW museum Set on a corner plot, the double-conical structure with event room fans out into a sculptural roof beneath which the customer lounges are suspended in the main hall 2007 Client Coop Himmelb(l)au BMW pkrajewski_pl photo: Piotr Krajewski 2

3 photo: Andreas J Focke photo: Andreas J Focke Public Passage Alter Hof Alter Hof Munich Passages are often regarded as no more than a link between A and B and that is usually what they look like, too: anonymous and non-designed Small wonder that such urban spaces quickly deteriorate into places you would rather avoid Pfarré Lighting Design created the reverse - a passage so inviting that you would willingly go out of your way to walk through it This passage takes the form of a flight of steps that runs through the former imperial residence of Munich, the Alter Hof Thanks to the bronze sheets cladding walls and ceiling, the space has a distinctive, warm character The variously sized sheets are arranged in vertical bands with every so often a gap for recessed white fibre optics which present as subtle light slits The main lighting is integrated with the underside of the specially designed handrail in the middle of the stair With the aid of reflectors, the light shines down onto the granite treads from where it is bounced upwards to reflect off the bronze sheeting 2006 Main designer, Artist Client Auer+Weber Pfarré Lighting Design City of Munich Kirsten_Hannema photo: Stefan Mueller-Naumann The passage connects the Alter Hof with the Sparkassenstrasse 3

4 photo: Sascha Kletzsch photo: Sascha Kletzsch Micro Compact Homes Grasmeierstrasse Munich Small, easily transportable spaces for low-red-tape deployment have been realized by a generation of new architects They are unconventional cellular spaces designed to be mounted on or docked with existing houses, as suspended or standalone units They form a category distinct from campervans and caravans, which remain within the domain of automotive design The Micro Compact Home, however, does a wonderful job of straddling the dividing lines between the disciplines of town planning, architecture and car design The cuboid home with an overall length of 266 metres in not intended for modern nomads but primarily for use on temporarily available sites for the likes of students The cubes consist of a wood sandwich construction with an aluminium outer skin and an inner cladding of ployurethane foam and PVC They are gently staggered along a slightly raised pathway offering a degree of collective cohesion to counterbalance their individuality photo: Sascha Kletzsch Project is not public! 2005 Main designer, Structural engineer Associate architect Client Lydia Haack John Hoepfner Brengelmann Engineers Richard Horden Studentenwerk München Ursula_Baus U-Bahn station 'Studentenstadt' is nearby From the station, walk down Grasmeierstrasse The Micro Compact Homes will be located on the left 4

6 photo: Rob 't Hart photo: Rob 't Hart Unterföhring Park Village Betastraße Munich After winning the competition in 1999, MVRDV was commissioned to develop a master plan for an office park in a commercial area north east of Munich 19 different buildings are arranged on a shared plaza in order to create the highest possible density with an urban atmosphere A parking level under the entire site has one central exit to the plaza level The car free plaza functions as a public meeting point Private gardens, lawns and terraces on the roofs form another landscape, visible only from inside the offices Surrounded by trees and hedges, the ensemble receives a green belt The Village fills a central void in the commercial area of Unterföhring Park and thus becomes the new centre 4 of the 9 buildings in the first phase are planned by Lauber architekten (Munich) and five by MVRDV The houses vary in volume and façade material as determined by the master plan This results in a heterogeneous ensemble, contrasting the large-scale projects in the neighbourhood photo: Rob 't Hart Floor area/size m² Main designer, Associate architect Client MVRDV BGSP+Kraemer Arup Merkur GmbH&Co MVRDV The masterplan in total is public to visit, the buildings however, are not 6

8 U-Bahnhof Candidplatz Candidplatz Munich Architekturbüro Egon Konrad who worked on this station together with the U-Bahn department of the City of Munich It is located under the Pilgersheimer Straße in the southern area of the city under the Candidbrücke and thus opens the densely populated part Untergiesing The railway station is named after the painter and sculptor Pieter de Witte, called Candid Pietro, who in the 16th Century worked for residences and for churches in Munich, and created numerous works of art and altarpieces The whole platform area, like walls, pillars and ceilings, is painted in a rainbow-like gradient At the northern end it starts with purple and goes on to red, yellow and green to dark blue at the southern end of the platform, where a ramp on a lock level is reached The coloring-design comes from Sabine Koschier Artist Client Architekturbüro Egon Konrad Sabine Koschier Munich U-Bahn christian_02 8

9 Funeral Parlour Munich-Riem Am Mitterfeld Munich The funerary complex at Munich-Riem by Andreas Meck and Stephan Koppel is a distinguished addition to the modern Northern European tradition of buildings that honour rites of passage with quiteness and thoughtfulness The simple, clear buildings, together with the rough enclosing, form a place of silence Three courtyards divide the lot The buildings are classified as serious, with oak, steel and stone Corte (concrete and stone) determining the image All materials are massive and left untreated Under a stone roof, one can find the parlour: a smooth oak cube meck architekten christian_02 October - February: / March - September: / April - August: During summer the cemetery is open one hour later than during winter Bus stop 'Friedhof Riem': Bus

10 U-Bahnhof Westfriedhof Westfriedhof Munich The subway station "Westfriedhof" is located at the border of the districts "Neuhausen-Nymphenburg" and "Moosach" It was planned by the architecture office Auer-Weber and the municipal unit, the light concept was made by Ingo Maurer and his team 11 large lamps which measure 380 meters on the diameter bath the station in blue, red and yellow light, whereby they structure the platform into different colour shadings The walls and the ceiling are drenched in blue light and lend the station the character of a cave, whereas the platform itself is rather bright Despite the spotlights there are no dark corners The rough imposing walls come from the little-treated milled slot walls, between which the station has been excavated 2001 Lighting designer Auer+Weber Ingo Maurer christian_

11 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Museum Brandhorst Theresienstrasse 35a Munich The building of Sauerbruch Hutton architects from Berlin is a long, two-storey, rectangular structure abutting a considerably higher, trapezium-shaped section that widens to the north The precise contours of both parts are linked by a continuous ribbon glazing that culminates in the generous glazed area at the main entrance Here a corner window running the full height of the building cuts boldly through the structure to the North West, ensuring that the spacious foyer with the museum ticket desk, bookshop and restaurant receive natural light from three sides and enjoy different views All galleries have white walls and wooden floorboards of solid Danish oak which provide a neutral background for the artworks Their lightness, colours and materials ensure a naturally airy atmosphere The façade looks like an abstract painting and draws attention to the building s function as an art museum It comprises various layers with different functions Sauerbruch Hutton s christian_02 Tram: Line 27: alight at Pinakotheken Underground: U2/U8: alight at Königsplatz or Theresienstrasse, U3/U6: alight at Odeonsplatz or Universität Bus: Line 154: alight at Schellingstrasse & Line 100: alight at Maxvorstadt The Museum Brandhorst is situated in the north-eastern corner of the Kunstareal that includes the Alte and Neue Pinakothek museums as well as the Pinakothek der Moderne With its entrance at the junction of Tuerkenstrasse and Theresienstrasse the Museum Brandhorst forms a 11

13 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Five Courtyards Theatinerstrasse Munich In the 20th century this area used to be Munich's central banking district As the various banks merged into one it was suddenly found that the entire area belonged to one entity So in 1998 the HypoVereinsbank decided to move their offices elsewhere and transform the remaining buildings into a modern center for shopping, restaurants & cafes, art galleries (among which the Kunsthalle der Hypo-Kulturstiftung), office space, and residential apartments and public art This network of passages and inner courtyards is an absolute pleasure to stroll through The Fünf Höfe is literally an area of five connected courtyards Every section has its own character In one area there are giant ivies over 10 meters long - hanging from the ceiling Another courtyard is actually a hortus conclusus Many other designers contributed to the gesamtkunstwerk Floor area/size m² Main designer, Landscape architect Herzog and De Meuron Burger + Tischer Landschaftsarchitekten Hilmer & Sattler and Albrecht Ivano Gianola Naomi photo: Naomi Schiphorst The Fünf Höfe is located in the very heart of the city, just a few hundred meters from Marienplatz The Fünf Höfe is located between Theatinerstraße, Salvatorstraße, Maffeistraße, and Kardinal-Faulhaber-Straße The five courtyards are called Amirahof, Maffeihof, Perusahof, Portiahof, and Viscadihof 13

17 photo: Christian Beirle Gonzalez U-Bahn Hasenbergl Dülferstrasse Munich /mvv-netz/sis/sdb/bereich2/hasenbergl/indexhtml In this station the barrier levels and the platform hall are separated from each other only by stairs and glazed galleries, but apart from that they are connected in a continous unit Free sight, linear room structures without supports and dark corners result in a construction with an especially clear view The most striking design element is the leafy ceiling sail of mother-of-pearl coloured sheet metal panelling, on a dark blue background over the platform Arranged in parallel with light elements that are installed under this construction, it makes the ceiling look like a great reflector and provides optimal illumination The side walls of the platform hall attract the passengers by unusual reflection and light effects of the material used on the walls - glass panelling with glass webbing in stainless steel frames In contrast with that, the floor covering is made of large-sized slabs in geometrical forms All other surfaces are in quiet dark blue , Interior architect Braun + Partner Architekten christian_02 photo: Christian Beirle Gonzalez Subway Station U2 Hasenbergl 17

18 photo: Jens Weber photo: Jens Weber Pavillons Kandinsky Königsplatz Munich For the Wassily Kandinsky retrospective in Munich, and before that for the Franz Marc Exhibition in 2005, two temporary pavillions were set up at Königsplatz The pavillions are reference to the exhibition, supplement the requested spaces and mark the two locations of the exibition, Lenbachhaus and Kunstbau The triangular buildings rotated positions guides the visitors between the two exibition spaces The smaller building contains the bookshop Walther König, the larger building houses the visitors office, ticket counter, safe-deposit boxes and toilets With close to expected visitors it seemed necessary to separate the service facilities from the main buildings while designing the temporary buildings in harmony with the surrounding buildings at Königsplatz and Lenbach-haus The pavilions do not try to compete with the prominent architecture at Königsplatz, they, however, maintain independence and self-confidence photo: Jens Weber Graphic designer Client Palais Mai Thomas Mayfried EON Energie AG palais_mai temporary building, remains until summer

19 photo: Florian Holzherr photo: Florian Holzherr Pfadfinderhaus Ottobrunn Buchenstrasse Ottobrunn The new scouts house is situated in a small wood, close to a school The structure barely touches the ground The building is entered through a tent-like, protected area below the upper floor There, raised up from the ground and into the trees, is the main area for meetings, communication, for play and cooking The broader of two stairs form something like an arena, connecting the light and spacious upper floor to the shadowy, weatherproof area on the ground floor Thus, the developing space continuum unites the inside with the outside, creating a multitude of locations, situations and qualities that can be used by groups of all ages in different ways The house is build with a wood frame construction The exterior skin is made of translucent acrylic glass panels At some points the front is opened up through ample glass elements towards the surrounding trees photo: Florian Holzherr Structural engineer Client Palais Mai aka ingenieure Municipality Ottobrunn & Munich palais_mai 19
