The Snake Paulstrasse Berlin This big housing project of the German government in the city centre of Berlin is a residential building for government employees The original main building of 300 metres length was built according to plans by Georg Bumillers Its ground plan has the shape of a wavy, serpentine line, like the one made by a snake In addition to this complex with 718 apartments, the site contains four apartment blocks by Urs Müller, Rhode & Wandert and, in the western part, a brick building dating from 1934 Further buildings include a new gymnasium, a power plant and a children's day centre, designed by GKK Partners Public access unknown! 14 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Five Courtyards Theatinerstrasse Munich In the 20th century this area used to be Munich's central banking district As the various banks merged into one it was suddenly found that the entire area belonged to one entity So in 1998 the HypoVereinsbank decided to move their offices elsewhere and transform the remaining buildings into a modern center for shopping, restaurants & cafes, art galleries (among which the Kunsthalle der Hypo-Kulturstiftung), office space, and residential apartments and public art This network of passages and inner courtyards is an absolute pleasure to stroll through The Fünf Höfe is literally an area of five connected courtyards Every section has its own character In one area there are giant ivies over 10 meters long - hanging from the ceiling Another courtyard is actually a hortus conclusus Many other designers contributed to the gesamtkunstwerk Floor area/size m² Main designer, Landscape architect Herzog and De Meuron Burger + Tischer Landschaftsarchitekten Hilmer & Sattler and Albrecht Ivano Gianola Naomi photo: Naomi Schiphorst The Fünf Höfe is located in the very heart of the city, just a few hundred meters from Marienplatz The Fünf Höfe is located between Theatinerstraße, Salvatorstraße, Maffeistraße, and Kardinal-Faulhaber-Straße The five courtyards are called Amirahof, Maffeihof, Perusahof, Portiahof, and Viscadihof 14

Olympic Stadium Munich Spiridon-Louis-Ring Munich Situated at the heart of the Olympiapark München in northern Munich, the Olympiastadion was the main venue for the 1972 Summer Olympics With a capacity of 80,000, the stadium also hosted events including football's 1974 World Cup Final and 1988 European Championship Final The Olympic Park in Munich is impressive with its outstanding architecture and it is still in keeping with the times In contrast to many other Olympic sites it still continues to be filled with life everyday Every year five million people come to the Olympic Park and buy a ticket - either to do sport themselves, to use tourist attractions or to watch the numerous top events and entertainments And this figure does not even include the many thousands of people walking or jogging in the park 1972 Main designer, Behnisch Architekten Frei Otto pkrajewski_pl Daily until 14 October: 830am - 830pm from 15 October: 900am - 430pm Entrance price 2 euro Public transport: U-Bahn line U3 to Olympiazentrum, about 10 min Then walk towards the stadium Tram line 20 and 21, stop at Olympiapark West Tram line 27 stop at Petuelring Tram line 12 stop at Infanteriestraße (Tollwoodgelände) Bus 173 stop at Olympiazentrum and Olympia-Eissportstadion Bus 52 stop at Infanteriestraße (Tollwoodgelände) 15

Academy of Fine Arts Akademiestraße Munich Based on the idea of transforming the 3 different urban spatial systems which come together on the site: the axial system of Leopoldstrasse / Akademiestrasse with its stately buildings; the structure of Schwabing, developed over time with its small-scale, differentiated buildings; and the garden areas of Leopoldpark and Akademiegarten with their historical trees The open configuration of buildings is locked together produced a sequence of transitory space between the park and urban space: the glass facade as a media membrane, the gate to the Academy, the inner court, the studio terraces as the connecting link and gate to the park Diagonal ramps and gangways connect the functional areas of the various parts of the building and thus the different departments In this way, and energized complex is created, which corresponds ideally to the diversity of creative activity Floor area/size m², Interior architect Coop Himmelb(l)au pkrajewski_pl Freistaat Bayern Mon-Fr: 7-21 Sat:

Student Housing at Munchen Enzianstrasse Garching This hall of residence is located near a university campus on the outskirts of Munich The project is found in the confines of the metropolitan area on a plot that is right next to lands used for agriculture The location of university grounds on the outskirts of cities was a common practice of Modern zoning which often took these areas to very inconvenient places This segregated student life from the rest of urban life Besides the mention of urban planning, the building presents an interesting solution to the elements of the façade and a varied typology, though lacking spaces for interaction or any common element for that matter photo: Michael Heinrich Project is not public! 19 photo: Evan Chakroff photo: Evan Chakroff Sammlung Goetz Oberföhringer Straße Munich The Gallery for a Private Collection of Modern Art, Goetz Collection in Munich, of 1992 is a free-standing volume that can be used as both a public and a private gallery The architectural conception for the building is derived from the collection of works that have been assembled, namely, art from the 1960s to the present Situated in a park like area of birches and conifers, the gallery appears as a simple flush-detailed form, yet upon closer inspection reveals itself as a complex study in composition (text from website wwwmomaorg) photo: Evan Chakroff 1992 Herzog and De Meuron evanc Goetz Collection Oberföhringer Straße 103 D Munich Tel Fax info@sammlung-goetzde Visitation is possible from during opening hours BY APPOINTMENT ONLY: Monday to Friday 2-6 pm Saturday 11 am - 4 pm Closed on sundays and bank holidays Take the Subway U4 to "Richard-Strauss-Straße" Change here for bus # 188 (direction Unterföhring, Fichtenstraße) to bus stop "Bürgerpark Oberföhring" Take the streetcar # 17 or # 18, or bus # 54 to "Herkomerplatz" Change here for bus # 188 (direction Unterföhring, Fichtenstraße) to bus stop "Bürgerpark Oberföhring" Individual timetable information:

photo: Rob 't Hart photo: Rob 't Hart Unterföhring Park Village Betastraße Munich After winning the competition in 1999, MVRDV was commissioned to develop a master plan for an office park in a commercial area north east of Munich 19 different buildings are arranged on a shared plaza in order to create the highest possible density with an urban atmosphere A parking level under the entire site has one central exit to the plaza level The car free plaza functions as a public meeting point Private gardens, lawns and terraces on the roofs form another landscape, visible only from inside the offices Surrounded by trees and hedges, the ensemble receives a green belt The Village fills a central void in the commercial area of Unterföhring Park and thus becomes the new centre 4 of the 9 buildings in the first phase are planned by Lauber architekten (Munich) and five by MVRDV The houses vary in volume and façade material as determined by the master plan This results in a heterogeneous ensemble, contrasting the large-scale projects in the neighbourhood photo: Rob 't Hart Floor area/size m² Main designer, General consultant MVRDV BGSP+Kraemer Arup Merkur GmbH&Co MVRDV The masterplan in total is public to visit, the buildings however, are not 21

Mercedes-Benz Centre Arnulfstrasse Munich The transparent building offers optimal show possibilities on one of the busiest traffic bridges in Europe The completely glass structure looks like an over-sized display window and together withe the 65 meter tall, elliptical glass tower, it marks the western entrance to the city centre (from munich-archand desing; teneues) From me: Nice showroom and museum, not so good like "Mercedes Centre in Berlin" or "Bmw Welt" but anyway, you can make photos, and sit in almost every new car The elevation make the best attraction in the night 2002 LAI Architekten Mercedes-Benz pkrajewski_pl The Showroom is open on Monday - Friday: Saturday: Sunday: hr Tel or infomuenchen@mercedes-benzde 22

photo: René Rutgers photo: René Rutgers Exhibition hall of the German Historical Museum Unter den Linden Berlin The extension, which took four years to complete, is a sparkling addition to the city s skyline With its dramatic, glass-walled spiral staircase, the new wing stands in sharp contrast to its neighbors, the neoclassical Altes Museum and Neue Wache, built by Karl Friedrich Schinkel Pei called on specialists from across Europe to help construct his design: an Irish team built a special supporting framework; parts of the complex staircase were shaped in the Netherlands; he combined French limestone with North American granite and Finnish glass In an interview with German newspaper Die Zeit, Pei put his creation in context: "The architecture should seduce people to move through the whole building full of curiosity and pleasure I even want to tempt them to the top-most floor through ever more steps, new views" It s Pei s only project in Like the new glass cupola of Berlin s Reichstag by Norman Foster, the Pei wing is expected to attract tourists with its striking design Floor area/size m² photo: René Rutgers IM Pei German Historical Museum Daily 10 am - 6 pm The DHM will be closed 24 and 31 December 2008 rrutgers 23

photo: Michael Krueger photo: Michael Krueger Heinz Galinski Schule Waldschulallee 73 / Berlin In 1990 Polish-Israeli architect Zvi Hecker won the competition for a Jewish School in Berlin with a remarkable proposal The building was thought as an unfolding sunflower Its many curving walls and roofs conceal a fragmented world of classrooms, squares and corridors Hecker refers to the concept of the school becoming a city This project marked the start of a European chapter for the office because it has its permanent base in ever since photo: Michael Krueger Project is not public! 25 BMW Welt Am Olympiapark Munich ure has been very popular with car makers in recent years; one after the other they have embarked on high-visibility branding exercises Mercedes Benz engaged UN Studio to design a Mercedes museum in Stuttgart, and in the same city Porsche is building a museum designed by Delugan Meissl Meanwhile, in Paris, Citroen has just taken delivery of a new showroom on the Champs Elysées With 'car architecture', as with the cars themselves, each new project looks bigger, more streamlined and faster than the one before Coop Himmelb(l)au designed a spectacular steel and glass tornado for BMW World, 'a centre for brand experience and vehicle delivery' The new building complements the striking four-cylinder head office (Karl Schwanzer, 1973) and the adjacent, shell-shaped BMW museum Set on a corner plot, the double-conical structure with event room fans out into a sculptural roof beneath which the customer lounges are suspended in the main hall 2007 Coop Himmelb(l)au BMW pkrajewski_pl 25

photo: Michael Krueger photo: Michael Krueger Page Memorial Axel-Springer Strasse Berlin Many German synagogues were ransacked and more than two hundred of them were even burned down on Kristallnacht, November Among them was the Synagogue on the Lindenstrasse in Berlin, that had been built by architects Cremer and Wolffenstein in 1881 This modest page memorial for the Lindenstrasse Synagogue by the Polish-Israeli architect Zvi Hecker brings back the memory and traces of Jewish life in Kreuzberg that had been erased completely for many years Hecker has done so by reconstructing the arrangement of benches that had once stood in the synagogue The focus on this element reinforces a sensation of absence of the synagogue and even more, the loss of its congregation Floor area/size m² Associate architect Artist Zvi Hecker Eyal Weizman Micha Ullman Barmer Ersatzkasse Berlin olivier_van_den_hoven photo: Michael Krueger unregular The memorial is located in the courtyard of the Barmer Erzatskasse Check the satellite images to see its exact location You can recognize the design clearly 26

photo: Jörg von Bruchhausen photo: Jörg von Bruchhausen Am Kupfergraben 10 Am Kupfergraben 10 D Berlin Here on the Kupfergraben canal the intention was to build a modern building which incorporates, but doesn t replicate the past As an urban repair, the new building occupies the footprint of the preceding building (destroyed in the war), while at the same time developing a sculptural quality The façades are composed of brick masonry on reconstituted stone consoles with no visible expansion joints While solid, age-resistant materials characterise the exterior, the interior is defined by daylight and proportion Throughout the 4 storeys the floor plan varies depending on the formation of the volume and the window openings The gallery spaces are lit from the side, and interior folding shutters make it possible to reduce the amount of daylight In contrast to a museum, the intention is to create good spaces, where one can live, work, or show art - in a townhouse dedicated to the arts, where it is not isolated from the world, but directly related to the cultural heart of the city Floor area/size m² Structural engineer Structural engineer Services engineer Services engineer David Chipperfield s Dreßler Bau Ingenieurgruppe Bauen JMP Ingenieurgesellschaft KMS Beratungs- und Planungsgesellschaft Celine and Heiner Bastian David_Chipperfield photo: Christian Richters Tuesday - Friday 11 am 6 pm Saturday 11 am 4 pm The gallery is closed between Christmas and New Year's Day The gallery is directly opposite of Berlin s Museum Island Take the U/S-bahn to Friedrichstrasse or the S-bahn to Hackescher Markt 27

photo: Viktor Ramos photo: Viktor Ramos Reichstag Platz der Republik Berlin Since 1999, the Bundestag has had its seat at the Reichstag Building in Berlin Built as a result of an architectural competition, the Reichstag was originally designed by Paul Wallot and completed in 1894 It is a bombastic building, with an overscaled above-ground basement level and four monumental facades During the night of 27 February 1933, the Reichstag was burned, destroying the interior and the dome which surmounted the building After further damage during the Second World War, a restoration of sorts was carried out between 1958 and 1972 After reunification, another architectural competition resulted in Foster and Partners being appointed to restore the building as a parliamentary center Foster removed the mezzanine floors inserted by Paul Baumgarten and added a new glass dome to the room, one of Berlin's much celebrated buildings and one primary tourist attraction of the city photo: Naomi Schiphorst 1999 Foster & Partners Deutscher Bunderstag boeboe The dome is open daily from 0800 to 2400 hrs (Last admission 2200 hrs) Entrance is at the west portal, right entrance (West B) The roof garden restaurant east of the dome is open daily from 0900 to 1630 hours and from 1830 to 2400 hours Visitors who have already reserved a table, can enter the building via the entrance below the west portal to the right (West C) Tables can be reserved by telephone on +49 (0) Guided tours are available, contact besucherdienst@bundestagde The German Bundestag (the Reichstag Building and the new buildings) can be easily reached on foot from the following stations and stops: Hauptbahnhof: Long-distance trains, regional trains, S-Bahn; Friedrichstraße: regional trains, S-Bahn, U-Bahn; Unter den Linden: S-Bahn; Reichstag/Bundestag: Bus routes 100, M 41; 29

photo: Werner Huthmacher Hausburgviertel Gymnasium Otto-Ostrowski-Strasse Berlin In 19th-century Prussian industrial architecture, brick was the dominant material, and its red colour ensured that the halls of Berlin's main slaughterhouse complex were visible from afar Many structures on the site have now been demolished and the surviving listed buildings are being integrated into a new mixed-use quarter The former cattle hall, for example, has been converted into this gymnasium Compared with the original brick structure, the neo-modern cube of the new sports hall stands out clearly, dominated on the outside by horizontal wooden slats, made of larch The light falling through the slats into the interior creates a striking effect: the roof construction, spanning the hall in a single unsupported slab with integrated skylights and acoustic elements, appears to float The pine load-bearing structure is trussed with steel tie rods fixed in the centre of the hall by V-shaped brackets photo: Werner Huthmacher 2006 Structural engineer Chestnutt Niess s Eisenloffel, Sattler & Partners Federal State of Berlin Christian_Welzbacher S-Bahn stations 'Landsberger Allee' and 'Storkower Strasse' are nearby 104

photo: Brighdino photo: João Sousa Wohnhaus Schlesisches Tor Schlesische Straße Berlin International recognition came to Siza in 1980 with his design of the Schlesisches Tor (Bonjour Tristesse), a large public housing block in Berlin Many have read this project, Siza's first to be built abroad, as the embodiment of the "contextual" qualities of his architecture, seeing proof of Siza's trademark sensitivity to his surroundings in the rhythms of the windows, in the apartment block's evocation of the street's curve, and in the slit between the new and old buildings I prefer to see it as a mirror of the melancholia of urban life Now known by the name Bonjour Tristesse scrawled clandestinely on its facade, the Schlesisches Tor - with its outer wall of identically sized windows - is animated only by the abstract evocation of a horizontal line, broken by a small dip as the building encounters the sky - ruefully reminds us that architecture is not, after all, always a joyful reflection of contemporary living Project is not public! 106 photo: Stefan Müller-Naumann photo: Stefan Müller-Naumann Münich-Riem Church Centre Platz der Menschenrechte Munich In this shared church centre for Catholic and Protestant believers, architect Florian Nagler defined the spatial presence of the church in terms of urban planning Free-standing Catholic and Protestant churches, each with its own spire, would have been farcical, so instead Nagler has housed the mix of spaces in an ensemble that presents itself outwardly in a snow-white shell: in situ-concrete walls faced with white painted brick surround the complex, giving it a sacred aura The two church spaces are identifiable from the outside by full-length concrete lamellae the Protestant church rather spartan, based on a square floor plan, the Catholic slightly more luxurious, with expressively designed windows and a trapezoid floor plan The meeting halls, nursery, administrative offices and clergy accommodation are arranged around two courtyards There is no sense of a dominant architectural figure here; on the contrary, the church centre fits in excellently with the surrounding buildings 2005 Florian Nagler Kirchenzentrum München-Riem Ursula_Baus photo: Stefan Müller-Naumann Located in the Munich-Riem area U-Bahn station 'Messestadt-West' is nearby 106

Netherlands Embassy Klosterstrasse Berlin The new Dutch embassy is located in the Berlin-Mitte district, the earliest heart of the German capital, in-between the River Spree and the omnipresent TV tower on Alexanderplatz In 2005 OMA won the Mies van der Rohe Award for the Netherlands Embassy in Berlin: The jury felt that the embassy was a powerful reconceptualization of the notion of an embassy, a government agency, and a building block within a city OMA's refusal to either adapt to the city grid or create a monument, choosing instead to create a carefully formed fragment that leaves open the question of what the identity of a government or a country should be, was much appreciated It was also felt that the spiraling trajectory that winds its metal-clad way through the whole block while allowing carefully framed views of the neighbouring city, produced such a seductive series of spaces carried out with such a sophistication of materials and visual effects and so revealing of its context, that it should receive the prize Floor area/size m² Main designer, Interior architect Services engineer Cooperating designer Lighting designer Project manager Supplier OMA - Rem Koolhaas Inside Outside Huygen Elwako Inside Outside OVI, Washinton DC Royal Haskoning Lensvelt Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs MI_MOA 121
