The building was originally a coach house and walls are lined with old pictures, papers, and ads from the past. 2 Farrington s o A lively pub in the heart of party-central Temple Bar, we ve chosen Farrington s for its excellent selection of craft beers. The staff regularly rotates the tasty brews on draught here and invite different breweries to do tap takeovers, where large sections of taps are devoted to one brewery. So, always ask the barman for recommendations of what to drink on the night (craft beer tasting selections are available). Don t even think of trying to order a Guinness or a Budweiser here it s craft beer all the way. As the name suggests, L Mulligan Grocer pub in Stoneybatter once had a grocery shop in it. The rear section of the pub is now a superb restaurant serving Irish produce with a clever creative twist. A selection of traditional musicians get together for a session each night, playing fiddles, tin whistles, bodhrans and uilleann pipes. 3 Palace Bar o Another true Dublin pub just at the edge of the Temple Bar area, this is the sort of pub where you might meet a small selection of close friends, take a comfy chair in the back room and enjoy a night of craic (the Irish word for fun ) and witty conversation. Or, drop in for a starter drink on your way into Temple Bar. o Address: 21 Fleet Street, Dublin 2 o Phone: o Website: thepalacebardublin.com Toner s o Another traditional pub, Toner s on Baggot Street dates back to around 1818 and has an old wooden bar full of memorabilia and drawers which date back to its time as a grocery store. One of the nicest features in the pub is the large snug just inside the front window which has wooden benches and its own door. The poet WB Yeats is said to have liked drinking here. o Address: 139 Baggot Street Lower, Dublin 2 o Phone: o Website: tonerspub.ie The Stag s Head o Hidden away in Dame Lane behind Dame Street, the Stag s Head has an ornate Victorian wooden bar and lots of stained glass and wooden finishings, all watched over by a large stag s head. The long narrow bar can get busy on weekends. Get in early to get a tall stool at the bar to be at the center of the action, or head to the large back snug for a cosy tete-atete. o Address: 1 Dame Court, Dublin 2 o Phone: SHOPPING Grafton Street Shopping Area MAP #3 o One of the most popular shopping streets in the city, and home to many well-known international brands. Although always busy as it is popular with both locals and tourists it is still worth the visit if shopping is on your agenda. Passing under the Fusiliers' Arch a controversial war memorial enjoy being transported into a serene green haven, soon making it easy to forget the hustle and bustle of the busy city surrounding you. 4 HISTORIC Dublin Castle MAP #5 o Dublin Castle is the heart of historic Dublin. In fact the city gets its name from the Black Pool - 'Dubh Linn' which was on the site of the present Castle garden. o The Castle stands on the ridge on a strategic site at the junction of the River Liffey and its tributary the Poddle, where the original fortification may have been an early Gaelic Ring Fort. o Address - Dublin Castle is situated in the very heart of Dublin City, on the south side of the River Liffey, off Dame Street, en route from Trinity College to Christchurch Cathedral. o Website - Drimnagh Castle - MAP #6 o Drimnagh Castle was, until 1954, one of the oldest continually inhabited castles in Ireland and is an example of an old feudal stronghold. It is located in the South West of Dublin City and can be hired for public events. o Address - Long Mile Road, Drimnagh o Website - Trinity College MAP #7 o One of the most well-known historical universities in the world, Trinity College Dublin is a beautiful setting for a stroll through well-maintained grounds and a relaxing lounge on the grass. Despite being over 400 years old, it's still an active university campus, and young couples especially will appreciate its vibrant atmosphere. o Tip - The Book of Kells remains one of the world's most famous manuscripts with its ornately decorated pages written back around 800 AD. 5 MUSEUMS Glasnevin Cemetery Museum - MAP #8 o Glasnevin Cemetery is located in the north of Dublin, and well-connected to the city centre by local buses. Set in more than 250 acres, this beautiful Parisian-style graveyard contains close to 1.5 million graves more than the population of Dublin today - and a large number of famous Irish political, cultural and historical figures are buried here (making this almost a site of pilgrimage for locals). The museum, based on the grounds, also boasts an amazing interactive exhibit, chronicling the history of the museum, Ireland, and Irish religion. o Address - Finglas Road, Dublin 11 o Website - Kilmainham Gaol - MAP #9 o If you want to learn about Irish history in an unforgettable location, Kilmainham Gaol (jail) is the perfect museum for you and a must-see when visiting Dublin. The former home of many famous and infamous Irish characters, the jail is perhaps most notable for the part it played in Irish independence, with numerous revolutionaries imprisoned and executed here throughout its 200 year-old history. 6 National Museum of Ireland Archaeology - MAP #12 o Walk into the National Museum of Ireland on Kildare Street and you are magically transported back in time to see famous celtic artefacts. A stroll through time will take you all the way back to 7,000 BC. o Address Kildare Street o Website - National Museum of Ireland - Natural History MAP #13 o The National Museum of Ireland-Natural History, on Merrion Street in Dublin, has galleries of animals from Ireland and overseas, as well as geological exhibits from a total collection of about two million scientific specimens. o Address - Merrion St Upper, Dublin 2 o Website - The National Print Museum MAP #14 o The National Print Museum was established to document the history of printing in Ireland, to retain the skills relating to the craft of printing and to create a permanent working exhibition of printing. The museum has a collection of over 10,000 objects that cover the whole range of printing crafts in Ireland. The collection comprises printing machinery and artefacts, including printing blocks, metal and wooden moveable type, ephemera, photographs, books, pamphlets, periodicals and one banner. o Address Garrison Chapel, Beggar's Bush Barracks,, Haddington Rd, Dublin, Ireland o Website The National Leprechaun Museum - MAP #15 o The National Leprechaun Museum takes visitors deep into Celtic culture to discover what really lies behind tales of leprechauns, rainbows and pots of gold. o Address - Twilfit House, 1 Jervis Street, Dublin City Centre o Website - LANDMARKS The Spire o 120 meters tall, by far the tallest structure in Dublin, The Spire was the winning entry in an architectural competition to provide a replacement for Nelson's Pillar which was blown up in It was erected between December 2002 and January 2003 to great public excitement. The column to the memory of Nelson, which was one hundred and thirty-four feet high, was erected in It was blown up in 1966 in the middle of the night, but the head of Nelson has been preserved by the Dublin Civic Museum. 7 CHURCHES Adelaide Road Presbyterian Church - MAP #16 o The Presbyterian Church on Adelaide Road in Dublin City Centre was built in The church has a rare early-19th century interior in a simple Greek-revival style. o Address - 18A Adelaide Road, Dublin City o Website - St Michan s Church - MAP #17 o St Michan s, which was founded in 1095, was the only church located on the north side of Dublin City until The present structure dates from 1685 and was renovated in The interior, which has changed little since Victorian times, still has its original organ. o Address - Church St, Dublin 7 o Website - Christ Church Cathedral- MAP #18 o Christ Church Cathedral is Dublin's oldest building, a leading visitor attraction and a place of pilgrimage for almost 1,000 years. 8 GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS Government Buildings - MAP #22 o The quadrangle of Government Buildings on Upper Merrion Street in Dublin City Centre was built by the British administration in Ireland, with the foundation stone for the building laid by King Edward VII in o Guided Tours - Saturday at 10:30am, 11:30am, 12:30pm and 1:30pm o Address - Upper Merrion Street Dublin's City Hall - MAP #23 o Dublin's City Hall, built by the Guild of Merchants and originally known as the Royal Exchange is a magnificent example of the Georgian architecture for which Dublin is worldrenowned. Dublin City Hall was built between 1769 and o Address Dame St, Dublin 2 o Website - Freemasons Hall - MAP #24 o The Freemasons Hall in Dublin City is a mid-victorian building from the 1860s and features a prize-winning design by the Birmingham architect, Edward Holmes. It has been the headquarters of Freemasonry in Ireland ever since. o The Freemasons Hall is located in Dublin City, near the National Library, the National Museum, Leinster House and the National Gallery. o Address 17 Molesworth St, Dublin The Four Courts - MAP #25 o The Four Courts is Ireland's main courts building, located on Inns Quay in Dublin. Building work on this Georgian building began in 1776 based on designs of architect Thomas Cooley. On the death of Cooley in 1784, work continued, to an enhanced design by the renowned architect James Gandon. o Address - Inns Quay, Dublin, Republic of Ireland o Website - Kings Inns - MAP #26 o The Honorable Society of King s Inns, founded in 1541, is Ireland s oldest legal institution and oldest School of Law. King's Inns is also one of Ireland's most interesting social venues. o Address - Henrietta St, Dublin 1 o Website - The GPO (General Post Office) o Built in 1818 halfway along O'Connell Street (formerly Sackville street), the GPO (General Post Office) became a symbol of the 1916 Easter Rising. Members of the Irish Volunteers and Irish Citizen Army seized the building on Easter Monday (24th of April) and Patrick Pearse read out the Proclamation of the Irish republic from its steps. The rebels remained inside for almost a week, but shelling from the British eventually forced them out. 9 OUTDOOR WALKS, BRIDGES, & GARDENS Dublin Zoo - MAP #27 o Set in one of the largest urban parks in Europe (Phoenix Park), Dublin Zoo is one of the most popular attractions in the country, and a must-do for families visiting the city. Not far from the centre of the city, the zoo is easily accessible on foot or by the Red Line Luas (tram line). The gardens display a diverse collection of landscape features which include rustic grottos, sunken formal panels of lawn with fountain centre pieces, wilderness, woodlands, a maze, a rosarium, an American garden, archery grounds, rockeries, and rooteries. o Gardens close according to daylight hours. o Address Clonmel St, Dublin 2 o Website - River Views o The best place to take a breather in Dublin city is along the River Liffey. Pick a bridge, any bridge. Dublin s got plenty. From here, the city s water-edged catwalk of architecture unfolds. The modern glass Convention Centre Dublin shines next to the grand neoclassical façade of Custom House. The Millenium Bridge o One of the new generation of bridges on the Liffey, the Millenium Bridge is the second of three footbridge on the river, and is a simple span projecting from stone abutments on the quay walls. It connects the busy shopping area on Dublins north side right into the heart of Temple Bar. o Address: The River Liffey

10 FAMOUS WRITER S HOMES Eighty Two Merrion Square - MAP #31 o Dublin's Eighty Two Merrion Square is a former home of the writer WB Yeats. o Address - 82 Merrion Square, Dublin City Centre James Joyce - MAP #32 o James Joyce was an Irish novelist and poet. There are plaques dedicated to him throughout Dublin on Clanbrassil Street, in Chapelizod, Ormond Quay, and Merrion Square Gardens. The Martello Tower in Sandycove is now a museum dedicated to his memory. o Address - Earl Street, Dublin
