photo: Jeroen Meijer photo: Jeroen Meijer Vitra Bus Stop Römerstraße Weil am Rhein The creation of the Vitra Design Museum by Frank Gehry in 1989 was a turning point in the history of the Vitra project and completed the transformation from a purely industrial site to a meeting place for cultural and commercial activities Over the next few years, new construction projects dared to experiment with architectural forms A conscious decision was made to select architects who normally would not have designed buildings in the Basle area, the aim being to create a site that drew not on regional sources that are now recognised around the world, but designs that stamped their distinctive character on the site through their foreign influences Jasper Morrison, a leading figure of "New Simplicity" a movement that advocated a more modest and also more serious approach to design designed in addition to furniture and accessories a tram system for the city of Hanover, and this project for Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein: a pair of discreet stainless steel bus stop shelters photo: Jeroen Meijer 2006 Jasper Morrison Vitra jpmm By public transport: from Basel main station take the bus to the Vitra campus; By car: autobahn E35, take the exit Weil am Rhein and drive in the direction of the Vitra Design Museum 5

photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Wojtek Gurak Vitra Design Museum Charles-Eames-Straße 1 D Weil am Rhein The inception of the Vitra Design Museum dates back to the early 1980s With the aim of documenting the history of the Vitra company, Vitra CEO Rolf Fehlbaum began collecting the furniture of designers who had influenced the company's development, such as Charles and Ray Eames, George Nelson, Alvar Aalto, and Jean Prouvé The design museum houses temporary exhibitions on themes of furniture design, and Gehry's building makes a suitable host for them - in keeping with the theme, but - once inside supporting, not competing with, the exhibitions As well as Frank Gehry, Alvaro Siza, Nicholas Grimshaw, Tadao Ando and Zaha Hadid are all represented with separate buildings on the grounds of Vitra, in a cross between an industrial plant and a model village photo: Dirk Verwoerd Gehry Partners Vitra Design Museum boeboe Monday through Sunday: 10 am - 6 pm Wednesday: 10 am - 8 pm Closed: December 24-25, December 31, January 1 The museum shop and the cafè have the same opening hours as the museum Guided tours are daily, at 12 pm and 2 pm, lasting two hours From February 23, 2008 daily at 11 am, 1 pm and 3 pm The number of participants is limited There is no advance registration for public tours Contact: A Gastel, info-weil@design-museumde, or call 0049 (0) Public transportation (ÖPNV): From Basel (Badischer Bahnhof) take bus number 55, from the train station in Weil am Rhein it is about a 15-minute walk to the museum By car: The Vitra Design Museum can be reached from Freiburg (north) or Basel (south) via the Autobahn A5 (exit Weil am Rhein), from France/St Louis take the boarder crossing Palmrain From Lörrach/Riehen turn west at the marked junction "Weil am Rhein" just north of the Fondation Beyeler A big car park free of charge exists 8

Vitra Furniture Factory Charles-Eames-Straße Weil am Rhein rchitecture The factory Grimshaw designed for Vitra in 1981 has become a famous and much imitated piece of industrial design The client, whose name is widely associated with contemporary furniture design, initially contacted Grimshaw following a disastrous fire Insurance provided cover for just six months loss of production, so a rapid solution was essential Grimshaw started work on site within three weeks and the first container load of furniture left the factory exactly six months after the first contact was made The fast-track construction used a 25m span pre-cast concrete frame combined with service towers erected independently of the main structure This provided a clear and flexible production floor The lining panels and insulation followed the structure so that the fit-out could proceed in parallel to cladding The cladding is made up of corrugated sheeting, rounded at the building's corners, producing a low maintenance building with clean lines photo: Nazar Leskiw Floor area/size m² Grimshaw Nazar 10

photo: Wojtek Gurak photo: Wojtek Gurak Vitra Fire Station Charles-Eames-Straße 1 D Weil am Rhein Following a major fire in 1981, the company Vitra has pursued a conscious approach to its own architecture, starting with the commission awarded to the English architect Nicholas Grimshaw to build a new factory hall After completion of the first structure, he was assigned the task of developing a master plan for the Vitra grounds Now Vitra commissions a different architect for each building project, deliberately contrasting works of architecture confront one another and imbue the site with vitality and a distinctive identity The Fire Station is one of the highlights of the tour Long an icon of deconstructivist architecture, this was the first work ever to be realized by the master architect who is today entrusted with prestigious global commissions Constructed as a working firehouse within the Vitra furniture design and manufacturing complex, the building is now used by Vitra as a showplace for part of its permanent collection of chairs 1994 Zaha Hadid s Vitra Design Museum Naomi photo: Wojtek Gurak Monday through Sunday: 10 am - 6 pm Wednesday: 10 am - 8 pm Closed: December 24-25, December 31, January 1 The museum shop and the cafè have the same opening hours as the museum Vitra offers guided architecture tours in numerous languages over the premises of the Vitra company's factory in Weil am Rhein, daily, at 12 pm and 2 pm, lasting two hours From February 23, 2008 daily at 11 am, 1 pm and 3 pm Contact: info-weil@design-museumde or call 0049 (0) Public transportation (ÖPNV): From Basel (Badischer Bahnhof) take bus number 55, from the train station in Weil am Rhein it is about a 15-minute walk to the museum By car: The Vitra Design Museum can be reached from Freiburg (north) or Basel (south) via the Autobahn A5 (exit Weil am Rhein), from France/St Louis take the boarder crossing Palmrain From Lörrach/Riehen turn west at the marked junction "Weil am Rhein" just north of the Fondation Beyeler A big car park free of charge exists 11

photo: Dina Bonefacic Mihaljek photo: Dina Bonefacic Mihaljek Vitra Factory Building Charles-Eames-Str Weil am Rhein -building This most recent addition to the VITRA's architecturally distinguished campus, is the first industrial building designed by SANAA It was designed for "Vitrashop" which produces shop fittings and uses this hall primarily for storage and assembly Because the building was required to be of great size and because it is close to a nearby residential area, the architects shaped its floor plan as a slightly deformed circle (with a 160 m diameter) This overall form allows for functional flexibility as well as for a more pleasing visual impression The building is 11 m high, its roof is supported by a grid of steel columns The exterior envelope is made of concrete, insulated and wrapped in undulating elements of acrylic glass, with varying fold widths photo: Dina Bonefacic Mihaljek Project is not public! 21 photo: HJ Imhoff photo: HJ Imhoff Weissenhofsiedlung Rathenaustraße Stuttgart The Weissenhofsiedlung is one of the most significant landmarks left by the movement known as "Neues Bauen" The development was erected in 1927 as a residential building exhibition arranged by the City of Stuttgart and the Deutscher Werkbund Working under the artistic direction of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, seventeen architects created an exemplary residential scheme for modern urban residents The architects participating in the exhibition - including Le Corbusier, Gropius, Mies van der Rohe, Scharoun and others - were known at that time only in those circles devoted to the international avantgarde Today they are amongst the most notable masters of modern architecture To be found at the Weissenhof development are numerous homes built by these architects, all in close proximity one to another And that's what makes this residential development unique around the world photo: HJ Imhoff 1927 Main designer, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe Hans Scharoun JJP Oud Le Corbusier Mart Stam Peter Behrens City of Stuttgart and the Deutscher Werkbund HJI The neighbourhood is still "in use" and so open 24hrs a day The house by Le Corbusier is nowadays a museum, check the website for opening hours With U-bahn go to station "Killesberg Messe", from there it's just a short walk 21

photo: Roland Halbe photo: Roland Halbe Child and Youth Centre Obere Weinsteige Stuttgart Dating from 1912, this house was built originally as a chemist's shop and dwelling From the late 1970s on, it became inhabited by squatters They managed to stay put until 2002, when the house's owner, the Helene-Pfleiderer-Stiftung, began coaxing the tenants to move out and initiated the plan to convert the house into a council-run youth centre Both foundation and council preferred not to demolish the clinker-faced structure The elements added around the original building push forward strongly like a range of folded mountains The only feature that stands out from the layered composition is an emblematic tower that rises boldly, its topmost level used as a viewing platform Although the rather gruff, offbeat, jagged architecture testifies to the influence of Günther Behnisch, the youth centre as a whole radiates a distinctive style that combines the unconventional with professional discipline photo: Roland Halbe 2006 Project manager Kauffmann Theilig und Partner Jakob Eckert Stuttgarter Jugendhaus Ursula_Baus 22

photo: Bjorn Utpott photo: Bjorn Utpott Community Centre Johannes-Hoffart-Straße Mannheim This new protestant community centre forms a new heart in a cheerless expanse of urban sprawl The single-storey, flat-roofed building was a winning entry for an open design competition in which 440 other entries competed Surprisingly the architects have been able to built almost the same design as that with which they won the competition In, where decision-making is mostly done with a very large group, including the pastor, representatives of the congregation and members of the town council, this is a small miracle Especially since the outer facade of the building offers a pretty unusual sight The U-shaped building encloses a semi-public garden courtyard, which is surrounded by the meeting hall, rooms and youth centre The eye-catching, load-bearing outer shell consists of two basic modules: prefabricated unclad concrete components that could be installed either way up, and an all-round glass façade photo: Bjorn Utpott Floor area/size m² Main designer, Landscape architect Netzwerk Architekten club L94 Landschafts Architekten Evangelische Thomasgemeinde Bjorn_Utpott 28

photo: Hannes Freising ZGG Pavilion Dieburger Strasse Darmstadt In Darmstadt,, The Alice-Hospital vom Roten Kreuz has commissioned Angela Fritsch Architekten to build a pavilion in the park in front of their main building In cooperation with Hannes Freising from architectural façade firm Huellwerk, this ZGG pavilion (Zentrum Ganzheitlicher Gesundheit) was to consist of a cheap container box with a wallpaper made out of sheet metal This golden cover has ornamental leaves cut out of it, making it a shiny and decorative structure in the hospital's park Floor area/size m² Main designer, Angela Fritsch Architekten Huellwerk Alice-Hospital vom Roten Kreuz Hannes_Freising photo: Hannes Freising Daily from :00 The structure is located in the park between Alice-Hospital and Mathildenhöhweg When entering the hospital's main entrance, you will find it straight ahead in the park The ZGG is in the park behind the hospital During opening hours you go in the main entrance Or you go around the hospital 29

photo: Reni Hansen photo: Reni Hansen Kunstmuseum Bonn Friedrich-Ebert-Allee Bonn Both the architecture and the collections it houses convey their pleasure in mutual existence Neither are in competition with the other; both find their expression in coalition with the building The Kunstmuseum Bonn built by Axel Schultes is the most important postwar museum construction, making it the culmination of the museum boom in The building is an architectural end-in-itself as well as a conservational shell It makes high claims for itself, but also for the collections Schultes operates openly; his art museum has three entrances; he designed the staircase to be a precisely cut, jewel-like geometry His concept of light brings the collection to life Light streams through the rooms as though poured from a watering can It was the architecture that made the museum internationally known In interplay with Gustav Peichl's building, the Art and Exhibition Hall of the German Republic that faces it, it enhances its own specific valency as architecture 1992 Schultes Frank Architekten City of Bonn MI_MOA photo: Michael Sondermann Tuesday Sunday: 11am to 6 pm Wednesday: 11am to 9 pm Closed on Monday, 23, 27 of February, 24, 25 and 31 of December The Kunstmusem Bonn is located at the B9, which connects Bonn and Bad Godesberg You can reach the Kunstmuseum fast through the A555/565 (exit Poppelsdorf) or the A59 (exit Bad Godesberg) Car-park is behind the museum The Kunstmuseum Bonn is connected to the public transport system of Bonn: use the subway from the central station line 16, 63 and 66, stop Heussallee; bus line 610, stop Heussallee 30
