7 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Schaulager Ruchfeldstrasse 19 CH-4142 Basel photo: Naomi Schiphorst The Schaulager ('viewing warehouse') is neither museum nor traditional warehouse It keeps the Emanuel Hoffmann collection in optimal condition and is primarily accessible for specialists: conservators, curators, researchers etc The heavy outer wall is built up in layers and its outer surface scratched, exposing the pebbles excavated on site This material is not only a visual expression of weight and storage but also, as a result of its great inertia, an essential factor in the interior climate control On one side the box is somewhat indented, creating a forecourt, so that the entrance side is visible from great distance It appears to be guarded by a small building with a gabled roof The courtyard-like space radiates urbanism and publicness Schaulager is thus not simply an anonymous box on the urban periphery, but rather a place that is active and self-confident, expanding the public dimension of the city of Basel to the south, towards the new district of Dreispitz/Münchenstein Project is not public! Floor area/size m² Emanuel Hoffmann Foundation Laurenz Foundation MI_MOA The building is ONLY OPEN for the public during exhibitions! 11 Housing Schwarzpark Gellertstrasse Basel This project contains a great generous public housing because of both their spatial and their material quality Most of them have four bedrooms in a compact container located on one end of an urban park The insertion of the building into the grounds of the park by means of a folded block reduces its visual impact It incorporates various measures that contribute to the saving of energy and sustainable consumption, this without giving up a design that allows for maximum enjoyment of the area photo: Ruedi Walti Project is not public! 12 photo: Andreina Schoeberlein photo: Andreina Schoeberlein Novartis Campus Fabrikstrasse 4 CH-4002 Basel Novartis is aiming to transform the St Johann site - its headquarters in Basel - from an industrial complex to a place of innovation, knowledge and encounter The new Campus should offer Novartis employees and visitors an environment for intensive levels of communication and work, which is ultra-modern, very functional and aesthetically pleasing The master plan on which all these changes are based is by Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani The individual special buildings are to be designed and also realized by invited architects like Peter Märkli, Diener & Diener and Japanese office SANAA Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani, whom Novartis commissioned to produce an overall plan for the St Johann project, is an architect with a practice in Milan and a chair in urban development history at the ETH in Zurich photo: Andreina Schoeberlein Project is not public! 2000 Urban planner Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani Novartis Schweiz MI_MOA The campus and offices of Novartis are not open to the public, its like a forbidden city for architecture lovers Maybe you could get in with a tour from the Basel ure Museum but don' t count on it you can find the development-map here: downloads/about-novartis/visitorsmappdf The area is situated next to the river, just before (or after) the Dreirosenbrucke Coming from France: Motorway A35/E60 direction Basel, after customs enter left into the tunnel and follow the signs to Basel St Johann From EuroAirport Basel take Airport Express Bus PTT 50 to Kannenfeldplatz Change to Tram 1 (direction Dreirosenbrücke) stop Novartis Campus Across the street you find the main entrance to the Novartis Campus From Bahnhof Basel, also take tram 1, same way 12

16 photo: Nazar Leskiw photo: Tim Smits Südpark Güterstrasse 4053 Basel Südpark is located near the main Railway Station Basel SBB The total ground floor level is designed to accommodate shops (since August 2011 the Swiss Supermarket Coop is settled in 70% of the ground floor area) The upper floors are designed around the first floor's enclosed garden The lower part (4 floors) in the south-west side of the volume accommodates several office spaces The higher part (9 floors) at the north-east side of the volume accommodates 100 apartments for elderly people, an elderly home with 28 beds and an internal restaurant The inner yard is part of the elderly house The façade of the whole building exists of a silver broom texture The tetris like windows on the north, east and west façade make it hard to read the floor plan from the outside The south façade is a spread of different sizes of windows at apparent places photo: Nazar Leskiw Project is public! 19 photo: M Spiluttini photo: M Spiluttini University Hospital Basel Spitalstrasse Basel The additional space, which is needed for a new surgery department and the Women's Clinic, is understood as a continuation of the existing building typology The new square structure is based on a large-scale concentric composition that allows flexible use of space The outpatient area of the Women's Clinic, the surgery department and the delivery rooms are variations of the same basic structure In the floor plans, new types of surgery and delivery departments are developed Through the choice of lighting from the facade and from the centre all the rooms receive natural light, despite their depth The exterior façade satisfies the complex requirements in relation to aesthetics, spatial and light quality, freedom from glare, protection of privacy, energy criteria and structural-physical criteria Harmony between the old and new façades is achieved by adopting the existing order of storeys, proportions, and load-bearing structure that is readable in the façade photo: M Spiluttini Project is public! 23 photo: Marieke Mannens photo: Marieke Mannens REHAB Basel Im Burgfelderhof Basel You expect clinics to look, well, clinical, modernist, austerely immaculate boxes, hygienically white inside and out REHAB Basel is a privately run rehabilitation clinic for patients with spinal-cord or brain injuries, they can stay here up to 18 months It appears residential and natural, though not with a funky, down-home earthiness, but crispy modern Here, oak, pine, larch, and ironwoods enclose and screen exterior walls, and a rectilinear plan brings daylight and landscape into its precincts through courtyards, grassy roofs, glazed walls, upper-level decks, and skylights The double and single rooms have daylight from above and an outside balcony The indoor swimming pool offers views into the sky from a pyramid-like dome above The floors are very wide, open giving wheelchair-bound patients a sense of autonomy Almost a place where anyone would like to live photo: Marieke Mannens Project is not public! 24 photo: Evan Chakroff photo: Evan Chakroff St Antonius Church Kannenfeldstrasse Basel Karl Moser envisioned a structure that stood flush with the street's building line, with unpainted walls and large stained-glass windows that would fill the interior with light transformed into a maze of colour The church is built entirely of in-situ reinforced concrete and its plan is a simple rectangle of remarkable size: 60 metres by 22 metres; the height also being 22 metres The dimly lit, tunnel-like entrance area is a cleverly staged introit to the church's long, bright interior Eight remarkably slim concrete columns carry a barrel-vault over the nave and a flat roof over the aisles, both of them coffered on structural and acoustic grounds The choir is flat, closed off, and over-furnished; the mosaic cross put up later by Hans Stocker also seems out of scale The opposite side, with the soloists podium and mighty organ, has a grid of fine concrete ribs Project is public! Floor area/size m² Karl Moser evanc photo: Evan Chakroff Services take place saturdays at 1730 and sundays at 715 and 1000 You can take tram #3 to Burgfelderplatz or #1 and #3 to Kannenfeldplatz 24

26 photo: N Bräuning photo: Ryan Taube Beyeler museum Baselstrasse Riehen The elongated building covers the whole breadth of the narrow plot of ground situated between a busy main road and a protected area of farmland It combines two contrasting motifs: long, solid walls and a light, apparently floating glass roof All the external walls are clad with red porphyry from Patagonia (Argentina) The building is supported by four 127 metre-long parallel load-bearing walls placed at intervals of about seven metres The two end façades are made of glass and look out over the park On the road side, the museum is completed by a windowless wall that protects the building and on the inside A large glass roof lets daylight into the whole building Unlike conventional top lighting, this roof allows the zenithal daylight to filter into the building s interior in its natural state instead of homogenising it and making it diffuse and milky There are also three systems with artificial light sources that illuminate the rooms when there is insufficient light from outside photo: T Dix Project is public! 34 photo: Jeroen Meijer photo: Jeroen Meijer Vitra Bus Stop Römerstraße Weil am Rhein Germany The creation of the Vitra Design Museum by Frank Gehry in 1989 was a turning point in the history of the Vitra project and completed the transformation from a purely industrial site to a meeting place for cultural and commercial activities Over the next few years, new construction projects dared to experiment with architectural forms A conscious decision was made to select architects who normally would not have designed buildings in the Basle area, the aim being to create a site that drew not on regional sources that are now recognised around the world, but designs that stamped their distinctive character on the site through their foreign influences Jasper Morrison, a leading figure of "New Simplicity" a movement that advocated a more modest and also more serious approach to design designed in addition to furniture and accessories a tram system for the city of Hanover, and this project for Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein: a pair of discreet stainless steel bus stop shelters photo: Jeroen Meijer Project is public! 2006 Jasper Morrison Vitra jpmm By public transport: from Basel main station take the bus to the Vitra campus; By car: autobahn E35, take the exit Weil am Rhein and drive in the direction of the Vitra Design Museum 34

36 photo: Nazar Leskiw photo: Nazar Leskiw The Picassohaus Brunngässlein Basel The building site is prominently located on Picassoplatz This is a corner lot with, for the most part, six-story building in perimeter block development Distinctive buildings, among them the art museum and the Baloise Insurance Company's free-standing headquarters, are its next-door neighbours The proportioning of the building and the arrangement of each single part is based on a modular systemthe ground floor contains conference rooms and offices as well as access to the underground parking garage The upper floors are reached via a prominent staircase Location of and accessibility to service spaces are organized around a type of core, allowing entry from both sides Single-space offices as well as large open ones are thus possible The high spaces of the 'attic story' are used for conferences, employee's break, and offices The building's facade is rather elegant in dark gray steel photo: Nazar Leskiw Project is not public! 37 photo: M Spiluttini photo: M Spiluttini Wohnhaus Müller Frobenstrasse Basel Through an exterior load-bearing structure, an open floor plan is achieved; this generates a column-free space that in turn allows free partitioning Various dwelling types, from studio apartments to and 5 room apartments, to maisonettes, emerge from this configuration The deep structural layer fronting the street creates a semi-private space, which defines the building as a dwelling Facing the courtyard, each apartment has a generous balcony The concept of a dual architectural order comes from the observation of the horizon, which expresses the division between ground and sky This resulting dichotomy could also be applied to the architectural system Here, the horizon is expressed in the essentially structure - free middle level, a consequence of the five-storey building A two-storey beam carries the upper floors to the cross walls on either side photo: M Spiluttini Project is not public! 44 photo: Tim Smits Bar Zum Kuss Elisabethenstrasse Basel Situated in the West corner of the Park between the Basel railway station SBB and the city centre is one of the most beautiful bars of the city Not only the terrace, but also the small building is a visit worth The building with a sinister history, it is a former mortuary and chapel, is renovated by the Basler architects Christ & Gantenbein who won in 2001 a competition to breathe new life in the Park (In cooperation with Vogt Landschaftsarchitekten) In their winning project they proposed to transform the chapel into a bar, they brought literally new life in the park This was also the duty the manager is charged with from the city The entrance of the bar is oriented towards the city and opens into one space This space opens up towards the park trough a round window, in the competitionplans they have proposed to make 2 oval windows, to save money they rejected the second and built a round one This round window makes the bar also visible and attractive for the passer-by photo: Tim Smits Project is public!
