4 photo: Becker Lacour photo: Becker Lacour Cathedral Choir School Landhausstrasse Stuttgart Churches are becoming increasingly important as cultural centres, especially with respect to musical education where state schools fail to perform this function In Stuttgart, a Catholic parish has built a choir school where non-church choirs may also go to practice The location is central, on a sloping site typical of Stuttgart The street features a relatively consistent use of brickwork and natural stone - and this material theme was taken up by architects no w here in their design Instead of a hierarchy of front, side and rear views, they chose to present the building as a sculptural volume, without overwhelming the rest of the street The foyer, large rehearsal hall, small practice rooms, library and even a small number of apartments are clad in a skin of bricks whose non-load-bearing quality is highlighted by the architects in the curved façade Inside, the atmosphere is cheerful and lively, animated with red, soft yellow and pale green 2007 Client no w here Katholische Gesamtkirchengemeinde Stuttgart photo: Becker Lacour Ursula_Baus 4

6 Baden-Württemberg State Parliament Konrad-Adenauer-Strasse Stuttgart The Landtag of Baden-Württemberg is the state diet of the German federal state of Baden-Württemberg The building it houses in was completed in 1957 and inaugurated in 1961 In the centre of the cube-shaped building (ground area 54m x 54 m), is the windowless plenary or assembly hall Grouped around it are smaller meeting rooms, offices of the political parties, and administration offices on the main and upper floors (text from homepage parliament) Public access unknown! 1957 Main designer, Erwin Heinle Horst Linde Kurt Viertel JKA 6

7 Stuttgart Central Station Arnulf-Klett-Platz Stuttgart Stuttgart Central Station is classified under monumental protection and is located in downtown Stuttgart, in close proximity of the Königstraße (Stuttgart s shopping district) and the Schlossgarten, which is also known as the 'Green U' of Stuttgart Stuttgart's main train station, similar to its surrounding area, offers its guests a selection of businesses that cater to their shopping, service and gastronomic needs The building by Paul Bonatz is a fine example of the Monumental Style (text from website Stuttgart Information) Paul Bonatz JKA 7

8 State Gallery Stuttgart Konrad-Adenauer-Straße Stuttgart The State Gallery Stuttgart is comprised today of three buildings The oldest part of the gallery, known today as the Old State Gallery, was constructed from 1838 to 1843 by Gottlob Georg Barth as the Museum of Picture Art In 1984, the Old State Gallery was joined by the New State Gallery, constructed by the English master architect James Stirling The Swiss architects Wilfrid und Katharina Steib annexed the Old State Gallery in 2002 While the Old State Gallery contains works from the Middle Ages to the 19th century, the New State Gallery contains art from the 20th century, including works from Braque, Chagall, Debuffet, Klee, Koloschka and Nolde Futhermore, the Gallery has one of the most important collections of Picasso's work to be seen In addition to the featured paintings, sculptures, and photography, the largest collection of European drawings and printed graphics within, with more than papers, can also be viewed (text from website Stuttgart Information) photo: Jean-Jacques Jungers 1984 James Stirling -MT4- 8

9 Waldorf School Uhlandshöhe Nursery Haussmannstrasse Stuttgart Waldorf School Uhlandshöhe was the first Waldorf school (Rudolf Steiner School) ever built It was founded in 1919 by Emil Molt, the owner of the Waldorf Astoria Cigarettes Factory To adapt the existing Waldorf School to the requirements of an all-day school, a nursery had to be built s Aldinger & Aldinger created a new structure that does not simply imitate the known 'Waldorf style' but develops it further At first sight the building even contradicts the 'Waldorf dogma' Only when one has a closer look, the familiar ideas are revealed again The building is an important statement against the misunderstood 'dogma' (consequently mislead to kitsch) to which especially some newly founded Waldorf Schools stick The load bearing structure of the building is very complex because of differently cantilevered shapes Public access unknown! 2006 Aldinger & Aldinger JKA Access to the school area is through Zur Uhlandshöhe Street 9

10 Catholic Congregational Center St Antonius Besigheimer Strasse Stuttgart The church of St Antonius was built around 1900 and is an architecturally preserved monument It is eye-catching, even from far away It`s bell tower and rounded choir generate an impression that extends all the way into the nearby intersection This peculiarity is not at all typical for an intersection of its time and the effect is still palpable today Especially the church`s vicinity to the neighboring buildings, which are all erected on right angled ground plans, determines the spatial context The new Congregational Center is an extension of local history - its brick façade echoes the façade of the church, its colours stand out from its surroundings subtly and its plasticity refers to the church`s spatial composition The round shapes of the choir are reflected in its counterpart, the staircase tower of the Congregational Center (text from website architects) Public access unknown! 2001 Client Lederer + Ragnarsdóttir + Oei Catholic Congregation St Antonius JKA The project is located in the Stadtbezirk of Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen 10

11 photo: Nikolaus Kolisius photo: Nikolaus Kolisius Light Installation 50KMH Stadtbahntunnel Stuttgart Artist Nikolaus Koliusis created a light installation for a tunnel The lighting imparts a sense of identity to this non-place and facilitates (underground) orientation in the city, a problem that also arises in the design of metro networks Quite apart from architectural considerations, special lighting is increasingly being deployed in tunnels in an effort to dispel feelings of anxiety or claustrophobia among motorists But in this case the relation between lighting and space goes a step further The U-shaped blue lighting strip on the roofs of the tunnels (two directions) mirrors the contours of the aboveground Stuttgart Art Museum, a cubic building As such, the artwork alerts drivers to the fact that they are underneath the building and almost inside it - the museum's basement runs alongside the tunnel Only after the motorist has driven in both directions is the image of the square plan complete The installation is both a visiting card for the museum and part of its collection photo: Nikolaus Kolisius 2005 Artist Client Nikolaus Koliusis City of Stuttgart Kirsten_Hannema Located in the Stadtbahntunnel, underneath the Stuttgart Art Museum 11

12 Das Weisse Haus Königstrasse 43B Stuttgart Because of technical defects, the staggered original building, built in 1974 by Max Bächer in the Königstrasse in Stuttgart, needed a new shell The old façade of anodised aluminium, designed for 'Radio-And-Music Store Lerche', was replaced by a self-supporting white concrete façade The unused entrance area and open-plan offices were replaced by smaller office units Spatially, the new façade is in dialogue with Paul Stohrer's 1950s office building The new, cubical building bridges a height difference of 3,60 m on the narrow side facing the Schmale Strasse It is oriented to the current urban context and, as a store-front and office building, has an urban character, showing clear lines and giving the entrance to the Königstrassee more density and profile (text from website architects) Public access unknown! 2006 Lederer + Ragnarsdóttir + Oei JKA 12

13 Bosch Haus Heidehof Heidehofstrasse 31B Stuttgart Bosch Haus Heidehof was completed in 2004 as an education centre and ancillary office wing for the Robert Bosch Haus Peter Kulka found a convincing and modern solution to the problem of leaving the old villa intact as the architecturally dominant building, while giving the new structure a unique character of its own Bosch Haus Heidehof consists of three staggered levels and blends harmoniously into the topography of the site The garden level offers a view of the park, the transparent entrance hall offers lines of sight from inside and outside in all directions, while the upper storey appears to float above the landscape Room-high sliding windows on all levels create a sense of openness The site of the Robert Bosch Foundation includes two other buildings that house the Institute for the History of Medicine and the Heidehof Stiftung of the Bosch family (text from homepage foundation) 2004 Peter Kulka JKA Accessible only by a guided tour through the staff of the foundation Reservation needs to be made in advance:

14 photo: HJ Imhoff photo: HJ Imhoff Weissenhofsiedlung Rathenaustraße Stuttgart The Weissenhofsiedlung is one of the most significant landmarks left by the movement known as "Neues Bauen" The development was erected in 1927 as a residential building exhibition arranged by the City of Stuttgart and the Deutscher Werkbund Working under the artistic direction of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, seventeen architects created an exemplary residential scheme for modern urban residents The architects participating in the exhibition - including Le Corbusier, Gropius, Mies van der Rohe, Scharoun and others - were known at that time only in those circles devoted to the international avantgarde Today they are amongst the most notable masters of modern architecture To be found at the Weissenhof development are numerous homes built by these architects, all in close proximity one to another And that's what makes this residential development unique around the world photo: HJ Imhoff 1927 Main designer, Client Ludwig Mies van der Rohe Hans Scharoun JJP Oud Le Corbusier Mart Stam Peter Behrens City of Stuttgart and the Deutscher Werkbund HJI The neighbourhood is still "in use" and so open 24hrs a day The house by Le Corbusier is nowadays a museum, check the website for opening hours With U-bahn go to station "Killesberg Messe", from there it's just a short walk 14

15 photo: Mieke Vullings photo: Mieke Vullings Killesbergturm Beim Hohenfreibad Stuttgart This over 40 meter high belvedere is situated at the highest point of the Killesberg Park and offers a terrific view over the city of Stuttgart and its surroundings Two light spiral staircases, with each 174 steps, connect four platforms with levels of 8, 16, 24 and 31 meter To separate the traffic streams of people one leads the visitors up and one brings them down The structure consists of a prestressed cable-net 48 cables with a diameter of 18 mm are spun around the mast and platforms At 34 metre the cable net is connected to a compression ring and at the bottom at a ring basis Because the mast pushes the ring and connected net up, the net becomes prestressed and in the cables only the pulling strength is working Thanks to that trick the cables could be formed so very thin! 18 Königin-Olga-Bau Königstrasse Stuttgart The Königin-Olga-Bau (Queen Olga Building) was built on the site of a former Gründerzeit building which had been destroyed during World War II It is a structure of reinforced concrete with natural stone and fair-faced brick façades Paul Schmitthenner chose this historicising design to present his position in the discussion between modernists and traditionalists that started again in Stuttgart after 1945 Today the building is used by the Dresdner Bank Public access unknown! 1954 Paul Schmitthenner JKA 18

19 Tagblatt Tower Eberhardstrasse Stuttgart In 1920s, a lively discussion started about high-rise buildings During this time a proposal for a network of high-rises in Stuttgart was created The Tagblatt Tower by Ernst Otto Oßwald is one of them It is an exposed concrete structure with a total height of 61m Originally used by a newspaper publisher, today the tower houses offices, exhibition spaces and a theatre Close to it stood the famous Kaufhaus Schocken by Erich Mendelsohn which was destroyed in 1960, many years after World War II 1928 Ernst Otto Oßwald JKA 19

21 Romeo & Julia Schwabbacher Strasse Stuttgart 'Romeo and Julia' are Hans Scharoun's first buildings after World War II and his largest 'till then at all He designed organic floorplans to open the buildings like a fan towards the way of the sun There are almost no right angles which means that the rooms are hard to furnish according to the needs of the individual users Yet, the buildings had great economic success, which led to the construction of the 'Salute' buildings in Stuttgart-Fasanenhof, Sautterweg 5 Project is not public! 1959 Hans Scharoun JKA 21

22 photo: Oliver Schuster photo: Oliver Schuster Sichtbar Optician Sophienstrasse 15 D Stuttgart This interior project attempts to restore the existing volume, which was sub-divided, to give it generosity and calmness Five elements structure the space and divide it into different zones and functions: an oversized bar in the entrance area, a bench seat with a table within a window display, a presentation shelf and a glass wall with transparent and reflecting stripes Either immaterial or neutral, these elements of support of colour and reflection provide not only a sense of order to the room, but also a contrast with the floor's surface The dark and structured walnut parquet flooring gives homogeneity to the room as it continues and covers also the cupboard-wall in the rear of the bar, providing warmness and atmosphere to a welcoming ambience b architectes 2b_architectes photo: Oliver Schuster 22

23 photo: Roland Halbe photo: Roland Halbe Child and Youth Centre Obere Weinsteige Stuttgart Dating from 1912, this house was built originally as a chemist's shop and dwelling From the late 1970s on, it became inhabited by squatters They managed to stay put until 2002, when the house's owner, the Helene-Pfleiderer-Stiftung, began coaxing the tenants to move out and initiated the plan to convert the house into a council-run youth centre Both foundation and council preferred not to demolish the clinker-faced structure The elements added around the original building push forward strongly like a range of folded mountains The only feature that stands out from the layered composition is an emblematic tower that rises boldly, its topmost level used as a viewing platform Although the rather gruff, offbeat, jagged architecture testifies to the influence of Günther Behnisch, the youth centre as a whole radiates a distinctive style that combines the unconventional with professional discipline photo: Roland Halbe 2006 Project manager Client Kauffmann Theilig und Partner Jakob Eckert Stuttgarter Jugendhaus Ursula_Baus 23

24 Central Administration of the EVS Kriegsbergstrasse Stuttgart The existing central administration building of the EVS (EnBW) was erected in the 1970s and is covered with dark siding made of anodized aluminum and Calorex glass In order for the new building to harmonize, a dark grey brick with a slight metallic shimmer was chosen for the outer shell The level joints use white mortar while the vertical joints use black mortar, and in analogy to the ribbon-like windows, they help emphasize the horizontal character of the new structure The entire building, except for the necessary window-openings, is encased in a double-shell masonry and steel-cement façade This encasing, in combination with the specially developed box-windows, enables a high level of warmth-retention A further advantage is the building s high thermal inertia This is caused by the fact that the heavy exterior walls, the majority of the interior walls and the vault in the ceiling of the dining hall are built of brick (text from website architects) Project is not public! 1997 Client Lederer + Ragnarsdóttir + Oei EnBW JKA 24

25 Catholic Academy Extension Paracelsusstrasse Stuttgart The plot of land available for this extension to the Catholic Academy is triangular, tapering as it leads northwards, away from the original building It contains 24 rooms, a multi-purpose hall, a chapel and some extra rooms It seemed obvious to face the rooms of the new building towards the park and its beautiful old trees The shape and the length of the property did not permit a linear main body, which led to the rooms being arranged in an S-shaped curve The disadvantage of the solution was a slightly disintegrated main body This effect was neutralized by a long wall built along the road, also creating an introverted courtyard dedicated to quiet and contemplation As the Academy sees one of their functions in offering time and space to deal with personal topics away from everyday routine, the choice of materials played a central role in this project (text from website architects) Public access unknown! 1999 Lederer + Ragnarsdóttir + Oei JKA 25
