3 photo: Marieke Mannens photo: Marieke Mannens REHAB Basel Im Burgfelderhof Basel You expect clinics to look, well, clinical, modernist, austerely immaculate boxes, hygienically white inside and out REHAB Basel is a privately run rehabilitation clinic for patients with spinal-cord or brain injuries, they can stay here up to 18 months It appears residential and natural, though not with a funky, down-home earthiness, but crispy modern Here, oak, pine, larch, and ironwoods enclose and screen exterior walls, and a rectilinear plan brings daylight and landscape into its precincts through courtyards, grassy roofs, glazed walls, upper-level decks, and skylights The double and single rooms have daylight from above and an outside balcony The indoor swimming pool offers views into the sky from a pyramid-like dome above The floors are very wide, open giving wheelchair-bound patients a sense of autonomy Almost a place where anyone would like to live photo: Marieke Mannens Project is not public! 4 photo: Ruedi Walti Photographie photo: Ruedi Walti Photographie BVK Wohnhaus St Jakobs-strasse Basel The building was built in the 1970s, serving first as a hotel, later as a home for the aged and finally as a residential building An inflexible, narrow and irregular structural grid, floor plans with poorly lit spaces, poorly accessible rooms and rooms with narrow dimensions led to apartments lacking in quality The project aims for a high-quality urban image to enhance the local area, and the creation of exceptional, flexible-use living The internal structure was adjusted, a new façade was offset to both street fronts and generous balconies completed the garden façade The apartments have open floor plans, the space between the street and garden façade is continuous The illumination of the apartments to the whole depth of the rooms is enabled by fully glazed façades and noise protection on the street side is offered by specially designed ventilating elements Project is not public! 5 photo: Giovanni Bellinvia photo: Giovanni Bellinvia Novartis Campus - Forum 3 Fabrikstrasse 3 CH-4002 Basel Novartis Campus at Basel will be an international significant place of knowledge and innovation Roger Diener, Helmut Federle and Gerold Wiederin designed and realized the first building, the Forum 3 It is one of the aims of this project to foster communication, creativity and the commitment of the associates through an aesthetic and functional approach to the design of the working environment Both in the building interior and also in the outer spaces, a wide variety of working and meeting areas are being created-providing open, transparent, versatile and flexible spaces that offer plenty of scope for interaction and interdisciplinary teamwork Immensely large coloured glass panels dance almost weightlessly in several layers around the building, making it move, gleam and shimmer, responding to the light at particular times of day and in different weather conditions Inside are office landscapes whose solid elegance combines open-plan spaces with places of concentrated seclusion photo: Giovanni Bellinvia Project is not public! 2005 Main designer, Artist Diener & Diener Gerold Wiederin Helmut Federle Novartis archviews 5

19 photo: N Bräuning photo: Ryan Taube Beyeler museum Baselstrasse Riehen The elongated building covers the whole breadth of the narrow plot of ground situated between a busy main road and a protected area of farmland It combines two contrasting motifs: long, solid walls and a light, apparently floating glass roof All the external walls are clad with red porphyry from Patagonia (Argentina) The building is supported by four 127 metre-long parallel load-bearing walls placed at intervals of about seven metres The two end façades are made of glass and look out over the park On the road side, the museum is completed by a windowless wall that protects the building and on the inside A large glass roof lets daylight into the whole building Unlike conventional top lighting, this roof allows the zenithal daylight to filter into the building s interior in its natural state instead of homogenising it and making it diffuse and milky There are also three systems with artificial light sources that illuminate the rooms when there is insufficient light from outside photo: T Dix Floor area/size m² Lighting designer Renzo Piano ARUP Fondation Beyeler Marloes_Faber Museum daily 10 am to 6 pm, on Wednesdays 10 am to 8 pm New: The museum is open on all sundays and holidays The best way to reach the Fondation Beyeler is by tram no 6 (from city center and Badischer Bahnhof station), or directly by train from Basel SBB main station and Badischer Bahnhof, getting off at Riehen (train continues to Zell / Germany) From Riehen stop it is another 5 to 10 minutes walk The museum is located at the main road to the German boarder (to Lorrach) 19
