2 photo: Marieke Mannens photo: Marieke Mannens REHAB Basel Im Burgfelderhof Basel You expect clinics to look, well, clinical, modernist, austerely immaculate boxes, hygienically white inside and out REHAB Basel is a privately run rehabilitation clinic for patients with spinal-cord or brain injuries, they can stay here up to 18 months It appears residential and natural, though not with a funky, down-home earthiness, but crispy modern Here, oak, pine, larch, and ironwoods enclose and screen exterior walls, and a rectilinear plan brings daylight and landscape into its precincts through courtyards, grassy roofs, glazed walls, upper-level decks, and skylights The double and single rooms have daylight from above and an outside balcony The indoor swimming pool offers views into the sky from a pyramid-like dome above The floors are very wide, open giving wheelchair-bound patients a sense of autonomy Almost a place where anyone would like to live photo: Marieke Mannens Project is not public! m² Main designer, Landscape architect Acoustics consultant August Künzel Martin Lienhard Rehab Basel AG Marieke_Mannens 2

3 photo: N Bräuning photo: Ryan Taube Beyeler museum Baselstrasse Riehen The elongated building covers the whole breadth of the narrow plot of ground situated between a busy main road and a protected area of farmland It combines two contrasting motifs: long, solid walls and a light, apparently floating glass roof All the external walls are clad with red porphyry from Patagonia (Argentina) The building is supported by four 127 metre-long parallel load-bearing walls placed at intervals of about seven metres The two end façades are made of glass and look out over the park On the road side, the museum is completed by a windowless wall that protects the building and on the inside A large glass roof lets daylight into the whole building Unlike conventional top lighting, this roof allows the zenithal daylight to filter into the building s interior in its natural state instead of homogenising it and making it diffuse and milky There are also three systems with artificial light sources that illuminate the rooms when there is insufficient light from outside photo: T Dix m² Lighting designer Renzo Piano ARUP Fondation Beyeler Marloes_Faber Museum daily 10 am to 6 pm, on Wednesdays 10 am to 8 pm New: The museum is open on all sundays and holidays The best way to reach the Fondation Beyeler is by tram no 6 (from city center and Badischer Bahnhof station), or directly by train from Basel SBB main station and Badischer Bahnhof, getting off at Riehen (train continues to Zell / Germany) From Riehen stop it is another 5 to 10 minutes walk The museum is located at the main road to the German boarder (to Lorrach) 3

4 photo: Jeroen Meijer photo: Jeroen Meijer Vitra Headquarters Klünenfeldstraße Basel photo: Jeroen Meijer The existing zoning required a building of less than ten meters in height Parking was required at a rate of one car for every three employees on site, including existing uses The building is to house various working groups which require "changeable" office planning in a way which will allow them to demonstrate and experiment with their own furniture lines The offices also become showrooms, so a relatively neutral space was designed for this program element Much research was done to investigate state-of-the-art office space before the project began As a result, "combi office" and "office landscape" types will be accommodated as well as more traditional closed and open offices The strict energy codes of mandate that there be no air-conditioning for offices, so natural ventilation is accommodated by opening windows and the entirely shaded south wall under the large wing shaped canopy m² Gehry Partners Vitra International Ltd jpmm by car: it is situated in a living area, on the E26 (to zurich) take the exit Hagnau, then the birsfelderstrasse, exit Rheinfelderstrasse, left Rheinfelderstrasse, first left on Burenweg > 300M, left then you see the terrain 4

6 photo: ptk photo: ptk Ricola Marketing Office Baselstrasse Laufen The fourth building by Herzog & de Meuron for the well-known Swiss candy producer (candies filled with medicinal herbs) The marketing office building is a low polygonal installation with open space offices, covered with huge overall window panels of the same size In order to make the building disappear, a camouflage-like cantilevered roof structure is covered by plants, who are covering the glass panels Three layers of different colourful curtains (designed by Trockel & Schiess) allow different variables in colour, transparency and views photo: ptk Public access unknown! 1998 Artist Artist Landscape designer Adrian Schiess Rosmarie Trockel Vogt Landschaftarchitekten Ricola SA -ptk- 6

7 Museum der Kulturen Münsterplatz Basel Museum of Ethnology, located right in the heart of Basel's old town, has been renovated and extended so as to include new exhibition space on the top of an already existing building This addition is crowned by an impressive, irregularly folded, roof clad in dark green ceramic tiles (concave, convex and flat) Cantilevered from the rest of the building, the new structure provides support for specially devised plant holders that create a curtain of hanging greenery Access to the museum is through a courtyard that descends gently toward the reception area An open staircase leads to three refurbished exhibition floors and culminates in the column-free space of the new roof addition Museum der Kulturen Basel Tim_Smits Tuesday - Sunday: h Monday: closed Tram Nr 2 ("Bahnhof SBB" or "Badischer Bahnhof") Halte "Kunstmuseum", then walk along Rittergasse and across Münsterplatz 7

10 Kunstmuseum Basel St Alban-Graben Basel The Kunstmuseum Basel has undergone a major transformation Across Dufourstrasse, facing the Main Building and connected to it on the basement level, an exhibition building has been built that satisfies the highest contemporary standards for the presentation of art Designed by the renowned Basel-based architecture firm Christ & Gantenbein, the new building is another architectonic highlight in the Basel cityscape m² Christ & Gantenbein Nazar Tue, Wed, Fri, Sat, Sun h, Thursday h, closed Mondays Trams 1, 2, 6, 8, 11, 14, 15 & 16 and Bus 2 to "Kunstmuseum" 10

11 Markthalle Basel Steinentorberg Basel The fourteen storey pentagonal high-rise apartment block is located in the Steinentorberg The architects Diener & Diener are responsible for the design of the apartment tower The pentagonal tower-like high-rise building is aligned with the urban planning on all of its five sides into the city 2012 Diener & Diener Nazar 11
