5 photo: Maarten Scheurwater photo: Maarten Scheurwater Woodland Cemetery Skogskyrkogården Sockenvägen Stockholm The Woodland Cemetery - Skogskyrkogården - in Enskede, southern Stockholm, was built between 1919 and 1940 by the architects Gunnar Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz On a ridge overgrown with pines they created a sacred landscape with several small chapels arranged to interact with the natural surroundings It expresses on a large scale the design aspirations that characterized Swedish architecture before and after World War II Asplund mainly devoted himself to the buildings, with the Crematorium standing out as a central work both in his own career and in the architecture of the 1930s as a whole Skogskyrkogården was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1994 The justification of the World Heritage Committee was: "Skogskyrkogården is an outstanding example of how architecture and landscaping from our century combine to make a cemetery This creation has had a great influence on the design of cemeteries all over the world" photo: Maarten Scheurwater 1940 Erik Gunnar Asplund City of Stockholm Maarten_Scheurwater the visitor centre is open every day from 12-17:00 hr, from the 27th of May to 2 September Closed 22 and 23 June To book a tour, contact the Stockholm Stadsmuseum at 5

7 photo: Maarten Scheurwater photo: Maarten Scheurwater Øresund bridge European route E20 Malmö From both sides of Øresund, the Øresund Bridge is a striking spectacle The 204m high pylons with their harp-shaped stay cables are visible from Falsterbo in the south to Glumslöv in the north on the Swedish side and from Stevns in the south to Rungsted in the north on the Danish side The fixed link across Øresund comprises a 4 km immersed tunnel, the artificial island, Peberholm, which is 4 km long, and an 8 km cable-stayed bridge with a main span of 490 m The high bridge s two pylons are 204 m high The navigational clearance is 57 m The bridge is on two levels the railway runs along the lower deck while the motorway along the upper deck 2005 and 2006 have seen a rapid increase in the volume of traffic on the bridge This phenomenon may be due to Danes buying homes in and commuting to their work in Denmark, because the price of housing in Malmö is lower than in Copenhagen photo: Pierre Mens Technical engineer Georg Rotne Arup Danish and Swedish governments Maarten_Scheurwater 7

12 photo: Nils Svensson photo: Nils Svensson Skatepark Stora Varvsgatan Malmö Overlooked by Santiago Calatrava's Turning Torso, an abandoned slipway in Malmö's old harbour area has been transformed into an activity park This born-again area is called Stapelbäddsparken, and its most interesting addition is a new skate park The designer is Oregon-based Stefan Hauser He is not an architect by trade, but has a background of art and sculpture and - of courseskating He has gained a solid international reputation as a designer and builder of skateparks What really distinguishes him from your average architect is his hands-on approach When construction work is about to begin, Hauser relocates to the project for the duration, together with a crew of loyal friends The skaters-cum-builders construct the whole thing themselves In Malmö, the result is impressive - a landscape of bumps, slopes and steel-rimmed edges, and a compulsory bowl: a kidney-shaped pool The immaculate concrete surfaces with smooth organic slopes look almost abstract in their improbable form photo: Nils Svensson m² Main designer, Landscape architect Landscape architect Placed to Ride Claes_Sorstedt Tema Arkitekter Malmö Stad 12

15 Metamorfos Järnvägsavenyn Linköping The city of Linköping (5th biggest in ) is known mainly for its technology and technical craftsmanship This project started as a wish from the city to visualize the big biogas investment and the major urban transformation that meant Metamorfos is an undulated landscape made of stainless steel, bubbling with seven hills It looks like in constant transformation The surface is mirroring and shiny and reflects everything around it including the sky Metamorfos was placed along the most frequented walkway between the railway Station and the city centre right on the existing grass lawn This meant a very low intrusion (some other signs and decorations were removed) but at the same quite a big change to the park Metamorfos is now an established magnet and truly a public property Almost always there is somebody (no matter what age) on it, or close to it It is adopted and loved by citizens of Linköping m² Artist, Landscape architect Monika Gora City of Linköping gora Opposite of the Central Station in Linköping 15

16 Bonniers Konsthall Torsgatan Stockholm Bonnier, 's largest publishing house, has added an extension to their post-war offices in Stockholm The new building is quite straightforward - a transparent glass and steel structure that sleekly follows the perimeter of what used to be one of the office's garden terraces This generates the building's most conspicuous feature - the flat iron form The Bonniers have been keen collectors for as long as they have been publishers So when they announced to house a gallery in the new extension, many expected it to be a display of their own collection However, this is not the case The focus is rather seriously and promisingly on contemporary art A fully glazed building does entail some obvious challenges, such as how to deal with the sun The aluminium louvres on the south façade facing the railway track, completely transform the building when the sun shines It changes from a delicate glass structure into a Potemkin-like wedge, which is not necessarily a bad thing m² Johan Celsing Arkitektkontor Bonnier Group Claes_Sorstedt : Wed 11:00 to 20:00 Thu-Sun 11:00 to 17:00 Café: same hours 16

18 photo: James Silverman Villa Astrid Doteviksvägen Hovås The crucial parameter for the design of Villa Astrid was dictated by the local building code, which stipulates a 35-metre eaves height and a roof pitch between 14 and 27 degrees This effectively reduces the size of the villa as seen from the street where only one storey is visible The lower storey containing the bedrooms and storage is tucked away underground with a small atrium providing light and an opportunity to step outside The third and much smaller storey is fitted under the sloping roof The structure as a whole is carved into the solid rock of the hillside and the architect left a big chunk of that same rock in the living room as a reminder of nature The technical specifications of the house list it as a concrete structure, plastered, with glass foam insulation and an exterior cladding of pre-patinated copper sheeting Wingårdh regard it as their best house yet from a technical point of view photo: James Silverman Project is not public! 2005 Landscape designer Wingårdh Arkitektkontor Natur Orienterad Design Private Claes_Sorstedt Hovås is a small village in the municipality of Gothenburg 18

19 photo: James Silverman photo: James Silverman VillAnn Krokaviksvägen Särö The villa typology is the smallest of Wingårdh's repertoire, but it is treated no less seriously than their larger projects The programme of the eye-catching VillAnn is ultra simple (four rooms plus kitchen) but its site is as exotic as things get in : the Särö waterfront overlooking the glittering Swedish west coast archipelago Structurally, it's a maximized building; it covers the largest footprint allowed by the local building code The concrete podium, the building's base, is set back as far as possible from the shore and cuts into the stony slope at the rear of the site This not only provides the best views but almost complete privacy, no small luxury in a building with a floor-to-ceiling glass façade (10 mm thick) The neo-classic parterre has a simple message: keep out The pool, which runs the width of the house, also works as a 'ha-ha', in the British landscape tradition of making almost invisible boundaries, in this case in the form of a moat photo: James Silverman Project is not public! m² Landscape designer Wingårdh Arkitektkontor Natur Orienterad Design Private Claes_Sorstedt Särö is a small village in the municipality of Kungsbacka 19

20 photo: Teresa Wan photo: Teresa Wan HSB Turning Torso Lilla Varvsgatan 211 Malmö Based on a sculpture, HSB Turning Torso is a fascinating high-rise building consisting of nine cubes twisting towards the waterfront and the surrounding area The residential tower is meant to be seen as a freestanding sculptural element posed within the city scape It is located on the Swedish side of the Öresund strait, right next door to Copenhagen The tower is 190 m high, with 54 floors of which the first two are occupied with offices The whole construction turns 90 degrees Each floor basically consists of a rectangular section surrounding the central core, along with a triangular section, which is partially supported by an exterior steel scaffold photo: Maarten Helle Project is not public! 21 photo: visiondivision photo: visiondivision Secret Sauna Långuddsvägen Dalarö If you want to build something in, you have to neglect your architectural aspirations and desires, and build something comprehensible and conventional to please the Swedish building regulations with their obsessed traditional values So at a first glance this sauna may appear to be an anonymous wooden cabin, with no architectural features or ambition The front façade is windowless; a water proof drape covers the façade on the other side The sauna has a pointed traditional roof as well, to accomplish this intriguing scam The front façade is actually a door, and when it is opened, the cabin changes its appearance completely Now you have a magnificent view over the archipelago, and the door/wall creates an intimate space with the guest hut next to the sauna The wall prevents the neighbours from peaking in as well photo: visiondivision Project is not public! m² visiondivision private vision_division 21

23 photo: Åke E'son Lindman photo: Åke E'son Lindman Kalmar Museum of Art Slottsvägen SE Kalmar Situated in the City Park of the renaissance town Kalmar, the new museum is added to a restaurant pavilion dating from the 1930s by Swedish modernist architect Sven-Ivar Lind It's a black 4-level cube clad with large scale wooden panels punctuated by large glazed openings It houses both the Kalmar Collection of Modern Art and provides spaces for temporary exhibitions Almost domestic in scale it still provides a variety of exhibition conditions The 2 main spaces are the White Box where one side can open up completely to the exterior of the park, and the top floor gallery that is lit by shed light shafts doubling its ceiling height One of the architectural main features is the open stair spiraling the full height of the building, with 4 floors, each different, stacked on top of each other create a vertical walk up into the greenery of the trees with a series of different spacial experiences while offering views of the environs; the Kalmar Castle, the lake and the city centre m² Tham & Videgård Arkitekter City of Kalmar TVA photo: Åke E'son Lindman The building will be opened in May 2008 Tel: , or info@kalmarkonstmuseumse 23

24 Skärsätra Gavelvägen 1 SE Lidingö The client-developer wanted to build two double houses, as big as possible, on a plot that constitutes a link between an older residential area with single family houses and some recently built five-storeys apartment buildings The four units meet the regulated maximum size and still the round buildings appear as freely placed in a continuous garden landscape Large horizontal windows offer each unit a 180 panoramic view The plans are very simple and draw upon the fact that even the small rooms are no less than sqm Entrance and kitchen are placed behind sliding doors in an otherwise completely open ground floor level Construction is in situ cast concrete, externally insulated and clad with planed and black stained wood Project is not public! m² Tham & Videgård Arkitekter TVA 24

25 House K Forgatan 8 SE Stockholm This house in Stocksund is a thin block with cut-outs for light, double-heights and a roof terrace Using the full width of the property it separates the front yard facing east from the garden in south-west Through its position, it's experienced almost exclusively at a frontal angle, and appears as if just a line The plan is simple: entrance and stairs fits into one box on ground level, a central passage on the upper floor gives access to bedrooms As a result, movement through the house is characterised by visual shortcuts, spaces and activities overlap The main structure is in situ cast concrete, which is exposed in the cantilevered entrance canopy, only seven centimetre thin By using a system with the thermal insulation as form work, costs have been reduced to not more than a standard house The interior is finished with white plaster, all floors and wooden details are white ash Facades are stained black 18 mm plywood panels, mounted in layers on a slowly grown pine framework Project is not public! m² Tham & Videgård Arkitekter private TVA 25

26 Archipelago House Husarö Stockholm This is a summer house on the island of Husarö, in the archipelago of Stockholm The starting point is the direct relation to the dramatic archipelago landscape with the objective to offer within a simple frame - a platform - several diverse readings of the relation space-nature, conceived as a light weight construction in wood and glass The horizontal character of the black stained exterior relates to the verticals of tall grown pines and the mirrored views of the Baltic Sea The geometry of the plan is generated by the specifics of the site, the house being fitted into the flat surface between two mountain rocks and turning simultaneously towards the sun in south and frontally towards the sea in west With the small rooms placed in the back, the social areas of the house stand out as an open platform crisscrossed by sliding glass The zig-zagged layout also creates a series of outside places sheltered from the strong winds Project is not public! m² Tham & Videgård Arkitekter private TVA 26

27 Doublehouse Danderyd Jungfruvägen Danderyd A house organized as a spiralling sequence of 4 large rooms in 4 levels These big spaces without a fixed hierarchy let this house invite the inhabitants to organise their lives following their own preferences The building envelope was defined by the full width, the maximum area and height fitting into the building regulations As a result of the existing topography spatial variations were developed; starting with the 4m ceiling height of the entrance level, the vertical passage up to the horizontally extended spaces opening up towards the surrounding greenery The upper large room links to the roof terrace - the biggest social area in the house Construction is in situ cast concrete Façades are rendered in plaster coloured dark greyish blue Protruding window boxes made of oak add a 3D quality to the façade, thus enhancing the depth and massive character of the interior All glass panes are fixed, with wooden side vents and doors Project is not public! m² Tham & Videgård Arkitekter private TVA 27

28 House Karlsson Gräggenvägen Västerås The simple constructions of rural buildings and the architecture of Swedish barns and warehouses was a starting point, some traces of which can still be seen within the type house sprawl of Tidö-Lindö The clients, a couple in their sixties, wanted a house for themselves including space to accommodate visiting children and friends To meet a need for cheap construction the plan is strictly based on a 1200 module Together with the use of standard building components the costs were extremely low In contrast to the deep red exterior the interior space is very light; characterised by the 3 light shafts that rise through the attic to let the sunlight enter also from above Windows are placed to further enhance the difference of the interior spaces by alternately directing the views low towards the garden, far away towards the lake and the horizon, or high up at the trees and the sky above All exterior fittings and details are painted in the same colour as the façade Project is not public! m² Tham & Videgård Arkitekter Björn and Berit Karlsson TVA This family house is situated on the northern coast of the lake Mälaren in central Set in a former recreational area where, in recent years, most of the small weekend houses has been either extended or replaced by catalogue housing 28
