2 photo: Maarten Scheurwater photo: Maarten Scheurwater Øresund bridge European route E20 Malmö From both sides of Øresund, the Øresund Bridge is a striking spectacle The 204m high pylons with their harp-shaped stay cables are visible from Falsterbo in the south to Glumslöv in the north on the Swedish side and from Stevns in the south to Rungsted in the north on the Danish side The fixed link across Øresund comprises a 4 km immersed tunnel, the artificial island, Peberholm, which is 4 km long, and an 8 km cable-stayed bridge with a main span of 490 m The high bridge s two pylons are 204 m high The navigational clearance is 57 m The bridge is on two levels the railway runs along the lower deck while the motorway along the upper deck 2005 and 2006 have seen a rapid increase in the volume of traffic on the bridge This phenomenon may be due to Danes buying homes in and commuting to their work in Denmark, because the price of housing in Malmö is lower than in Copenhagen photo: Pierre Mens Technical engineer Client Georg Rotne ARUP Danish and Swedish governments Maarten_Scheurwater 2

3 photo: Nils Svensson photo: Nils Svensson Skatepark Stora Varvsgatan Malmö Overlooked by Santiago Calatrava's Turning Torso, an abandoned slipway in Malmö's old harbour area has been transformed into an activity park This born-again area is called Stapelbäddsparken, and its most interesting addition is a new skate park The designer is Oregon-based Stefan Hauser He is not an architect by trade, but has a background of art and sculpture and - of courseskating He has gained a solid international reputation as a designer and builder of skateparks What really distinguishes him from your average architect is his hands-on approach When construction work is about to begin, Hauser relocates to the project for the duration, together with a crew of loyal friends The skaters-cum-builders construct the whole thing themselves In Malmö, the result is impressive - a landscape of bumps, slopes and steel-rimmed edges, and a compulsory bowl: a kidney-shaped pool The immaculate concrete surfaces with smooth organic slopes look almost abstract in their improbable form photo: Nils Svensson Floor area/size m² Main designer, Landscape architect Landscape architect Client Placed to Ride Claes_Sorstedt Tema Arkitekter Malmö Stad 3

5 photo: Teresa Wan photo: Teresa Wan HSB Turning Torso Lilla Varvsgatan 211 Malmö Based on a sculpture, HSB Turning Torso is a fascinating high-rise building consisting of nine cubes twisting towards the waterfront and the surrounding area The residential tower is meant to be seen as a freestanding sculptural element posed within the city scape It is located on the Swedish side of the Öresund strait, right next door to Copenhagen The tower is 190 m high, with 54 floors of which the first two are occupied with offices The whole construction turns 90 degrees Each floor basically consists of a rectangular section surrounding the central core, along with a triangular section, which is partially supported by an exterior steel scaffold photo: Maarten Helle Project is not public! 8 photo: schmidt hammer lassen architects photo: schmidt hammer lassen architects Flundran District Court Hovrättstorget Malmö Flundran is an attractive quarter that skirts Malmö's old city with the Castle Park and Västra Hamnkanalen on one side, and the former commercial harbour district (Universitetsholmen) on the other The new District Court, which also acts as the Court of Appeal for Skåne and Blekinge, constitutes a fulcrum for the surrounding characteristic and highly disparate sites The building's form reflects the contours of the terrain and cuts a crisp, self-assured profile in relation to its surroundings: water and green areas An existing late-modernist building on the site, used for letting offices, is to be preserved, while the new building incorporates nine courtrooms, three floors of offices and an underground car park The simple, robust image presented by the new building interacts harmoniously with the old harbour areas This image is underscored by the choice of materials and design for the facades photo: schmidt hammer lassen architects Public access unknown! 11 Car Park Erika Östra Varvsgatan 6B Malmö Can a parking garage be designed to make an attractive contribution to the cityscape? Answer: yes! In this project we had the advantage of having designed the neighbouring office block and were able to create an ensemble We chose to work with contrasts: The office block s stable concrete walls provided the opportunity to work with 'lightweight' materials White glass boxes surround the parking garage and break down the scale of a large monofunctional volume By day, the white glass sparkles but at night the building s coloured ceilings mean that the building changes character completely At street level there is a gym, adding a vibrant ambience to the street environment The building will have a variety of vegetation to create a pleasant atmosphere for the users The ground floor will be covered with green, with a few openings (from the gym) scattered around the facades 2010 Metro Arkitekter Nazar 11

12 Malmö Central Station Lokgatan Malmö The modern design of the Glass Hall contrasts with the historic building of the Central Station The modern architecture efficiently caters for the increasing flow of people travelling To enhance the different parts of the station, the various functions are reflected in both material and service The façade of the 'Glass Hall' is suspended in a wire system supported by a steel structure that acts like a modern version of the old railway hall Inside the Glass Hall there is a fast food restaurant, a newspaper store, an exchange office and a café The new glass façade opens up toward the historic railway hall and exposes it for the travelers for the first time in the station's history The older part of the station runs at a lower pace and the materials used are more traditional such as brick and dark-stained wood The restaurants here are primarily directed to those with a little more time to spend 2011 Metro Arkitekter Nazar 12

13 Students Apartments Lilla Varvsgatan Malmö During the nineties, the city of Malmö developed from a heavy industrial town to an educational town This process created a huge shortage of small apartments situated in the center of the city area and close to schools and communications In 1998 became Malmö the host for the International housing Expo Bo01, located at industrial wasteland in the harbourarea in the heart of Malmö Wikeborg & Sander was invited to perform one of the building projects at the expo For us, the choise was natural and obvious: Our contribute to the expo and the city of Malmö would be a building containing student apartments The challenge was to create high quality architecture within reasonable costs for the studentsour way of working is to participate actively in the entire process, from the first sketch to when people moving in We soon decided that we wanted to use prefabricated elements in a modulized system 2005 Wikeborg & Sander arkitektur Nazar 13

15 photo: World Trade Center Jungmansgatan Malmö Midroc has developed the World Trade Center in Malmö with an additional office building The building consists of a lower section with five floors and a higher section with 10 floors A middle section houses the reception area and conference room as well as a restaurant The World Trade Center offers office space and premises for companies in all branches and all sizes Many of them have regional or head offices here The goal is to, through targeted activities, work for an increased business exchange locally, regionally and internationally 2009 Krook & Tjäder Nazar 15

16 Orkanen Nordenskiöldsgatan Malmö The building is rented on a 20 year contract by Malmö University The building's exterior is made of green tinted glass and large windows The facade is decorated with words and phrases in different languages The words on the facade include citations that are taken from the Malmö-born poet Hjalmar Gullberg's poem "Just the right words" and from the rapper and reggae artist Timbuktu's song "A Letter" The facade and the design have over the years got lots of problems A number of large glass panels have fallen to the ground and the building is now surrounded partly by fences to ensure that nobody is injured The shortcomings of the material choices have generally been extensive in this project 2005 Diener & Diener Nazar 16

17 Hytten 4 Lilla Varvsgatan Malmö The dwelling unit Hytten 4 poses as the north east corner of the complex plan of the living fair Bo01 The consequence of the plan, with three different construction rights within the unit, is a complex building volumethe building has an urban structure like a classical city block, with an obvious exterior and interior which manifests a non exposed, interior living A great span of apartment sizes as well as the contrast between the row houses and the smaller apartments gives the building a rich inner life 2006 Metro Arkitekter Nazar 17
