2 Woodland Cemetery Skogskyrkogården Sockenvägen Stockholm The Woodland Cemetery - Skogskyrkogården - in Enskede, southern Stockholm, was built between 1919 and 1940 by the architects Gunnar Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz On a ridge overgrown with pines they created a sacred landscape with several small chapels arranged to interact with the natural surroundings It expresses on a large scale the design aspirations that characterized Swedish architecture before and after World War II Asplund mainly devoted himself to the buildings, with the Crematorium standing out as a central work both in his own career and in the architecture of the 1930s as a whole Skogskyrkogården was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1994 The justification of the World Heritage Committee was: "Skogskyrkogården is an outstanding example of how architecture and landscaping from our century combine to make a cemetery This creation has had a great influence on the design of cemeteries all over the world" 1940 Erik Gunnar Asplund City of Stockholm Maarten_Scheurwater the visitor centre is open every day from 12-17:00 hr, from the 27th of May to 2 September Closed 22 and 23 June To book a tour, contact the Stockholm Stadsmuseum at 2

3 Stockholm Public Library Odengatan Stockholm Like many of Asplund s other projects the Stockholm City Library ( ) went through numerous modifications and alterations during the design process Unlike most of his major projects, the design work of the Library was assigned to him without a normally required competition This arrangement provided Asplund the opportunity to develop his design in a more relaxed manner Eventually the design was a round hall surrounded by staircases, a tall cylinder with an opaque glazing in the roof lights The base of the building is a square The combination of spherical and cubic forms was a frequent motif, which can be found in both Asplund s earlier projects and those of his contemporaries A strict, symmetrical variation of this motif can be seen as a product of the search for innate aesthetic value of forms in the context of Classical Revival 1928 Erik Gunnar Asplund City of Stockholm Maarten_Scheurwater 3

4 Woodland Chapel Skogskapellet Sockenvägen Stockholm In the beginning of the 20th century Stockholm s burial grounds had to be expanded, so an international architect competition was initiated in order to ensure the dignity, artistic quality and harmony of the buildings, vegetation and landscape of a new cemetery - Skogskyrkogården, the Woodland Cemeter south of Stockholm A part of the Cemetery and the first chapel in the park, the Woodland Chapel, designed by E G Asplund, was completed in 1920 The wooden chapel with its white-washed walls and black roof is adorned by Carl Milles sculpture The Angel of Death, iron gates designed by Asplund and an altar painting by artist Gunnar Torhamn Erik Gunnar Asplund died in 1940 He rests beside the Chapel of Faith under a simple epitaph bearing the words His work lives 1920 Erik Gunnar Asplund City of Stockholm Maarten_Scheurwater The Tallum Pavilion, which is in the south of Skogskyrkogården, has a permanent exhibition about the cemetery and the two architects This visitor centre is open every day from 12-17:00 hr, from the 27th of May to 2 September Closed 22 and 23 June To book a tour, contact the Stockholm Stadsmuseum at 4

5 Bonniers Konsthall Torsgatan Stockholm Bonnier, 's largest publishing house, has added an extension to their post-war offices in Stockholm The new building is quite straightforward - a transparent glass and steel structure that sleekly follows the perimeter of what used to be one of the office's garden terraces This generates the building's most conspicuous feature - the flat iron form The Bonniers have been keen collectors for as long as they have been publishers So when they announced to house a gallery in the new extension, many expected it to be a display of their own collection However, this is not the case The focus is rather seriously and promisingly on contemporary art A fully glazed building does entail some obvious challenges, such as how to deal with the sun The aluminium louvres on the south façade facing the railway track, completely transform the building when the sun shines It changes from a delicate glass structure into a Potemkin-like wedge, which is not necessarily a bad thing Floor area/size m² Johan Celsing Arkitektkontor Bonnier Group Claes_Sorstedt : Wed 11:00 to 20:00 Thu-Sun 11:00 to 17:00 Café: same hours 5

7 House K Forgatan 8 SE Stockholm This house in Stocksund is a thin block with cut-outs for light, double-heights and a roof terrace Using the full width of the property it separates the front yard facing east from the garden in south-west Through its position, it's experienced almost exclusively at a frontal angle, and appears as if just a line The plan is simple: entrance and stairs fits into one box on ground level, a central passage on the upper floor gives access to bedrooms As a result, movement through the house is characterised by visual shortcuts, spaces and activities overlap The main structure is in situ cast concrete, which is exposed in the cantilevered entrance canopy, only seven centimetre thin By using a system with the thermal insulation as form work, costs have been reduced to not more than a standard house The interior is finished with white plaster, all floors and wooden details are white ash Facades are stained black 18 mm plywood panels, mounted in layers on a slowly grown pine framework Project is not public! 8 Archipelago House Husarö Stockholm This is a summer house on the island of Husarö, in the archipelago of Stockholm The starting point is the direct relation to the dramatic archipelago landscape with the objective to offer within a simple frame - a platform - several diverse readings of the relation space-nature, conceived as a light weight construction in wood and glass The horizontal character of the black stained exterior relates to the verticals of tall grown pines and the mirrored views of the Baltic Sea The geometry of the plan is generated by the specifics of the site, the house being fitted into the flat surface between two mountain rocks and turning simultaneously towards the sun in south and frontally towards the sea in west With the small rooms placed in the back, the social areas of the house stand out as an open platform crisscrossed by sliding glass The zig-zagged layout also creates a series of outside places sheltered from the strong winds Project is not public! 9 photo: Paul Tahon and Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec photo: Paul Tahon and Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec Showroom Kvadrat Stockholm Nackagatan 4 S Stockholm Bouroullec designed a showroom structured by textile walls made of independant tiles assembled together via an ingenious folding system The Tiles sytem was conceived specifically for the textile showroom activity It aims at highlighting the various textures and materials of Kvadrat s collection by dressing the spot with sensuality and warmth Moreover, it grants a certain flexibility and a wide range of possible evolution to the showroom Then, the doors themselves are conceived as self-supporting and mobile modules like furniture-boxes that can be moved easily It is the realisation of some long-incubated ideas about constructing soundproofing spaces with textile Conceived like sorts of scales, the Tiles can follow infinite shapes, be they organic or geometric Thus, the high modularity of this system allows to consider multiple applications in order to build autonomous and soundproofing spaces photo: Paul Tahon and Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec 2006 Interior architect Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec Naomi Tuesday - Thursday or by personal appointment 9

10 photo: Thom Hoevenaar Kulturhuset Sergels Torg Stockholm The Kulturhuset is located on Sergels Torg in the centre of Stockholm The 'culture house' was designed by Peter Celsing and opened in 1974 The building is focused on the adjacent square, which is situated ten metres lower than the building and composed of black and white shapes At the eastern side of the square, one can find the 'Kristallvertikalaccent', a sculpture of glass and steel, designed by Edvin Ohrstrom Peter Celsing's Kulturhuset is a low, long building with a glazed, lined façade The backside of the building is completely closed The complex consists of two parts: a theatre with a simple square shape and a long drawn-out exposition part On the ground floor, a large model of Stockholm is on display photo: Thom Hoevenaar 1974 Peter Celsing hoevenaar An extensive schedule is available on the website of the Kulturhuset The opening hours of the ticket office are: Tuesday - Friday: Saturday: Sunday: The Kulturhuset is located next to the metro station T-Centralen Buses 47, 52, 56, 59 and 69 go to Sergels Torg (the adjacent square) 10

12 Pionen White mountain Renstiernas gata Stockholm The project takes place in a former antiatomic shelter An amazing location 30m down under the granite rocks of the Vita Berg Park in Stockholm The client is an internet provider and the rock shelter hosts server halls and offices The starting point of the project was to consider the rock as a living organism The humans try to acclimate themselves to this foreign world and bring the best elements from earth: light, plants, water and technology We created strong contrasts between rooms where the rock dominates and where the human being is a stranger against rooms where the human being took over totally The choice of lightning has been very challenging We tried to bring as much variation as possible Otherwise it is very easy to loose the feeling of time in an enclosed space Our references come straight from science fiction films, mostly Silent Running and a bunch of Bond films with Ken Adams set design Project is not public! 13 JLindeberg Flagship Biblioteksgatan Stockholm The Stockholm flagship is composed of four distinctive worlds: The entrance works as a 3-dimensional exhibition space The entrance floor houses the 'casual' collection and further in the 'sport' collection Upstairs is dedicated to the tailoring and made-to-measure section Even though each world is unique in its expression, they need to be connected visually through certain materials and furniture because of the deep and narrow shape of the shop Materiality and the juxtaposition of furniture from different époques are the starting point of the design The dominating materials are corten steel, reinforced glass, cocos carpets, concrete and oak The fixtures are a mixed of customized vintage furniture and new produced modules designed by the office 2008 Albert France-Lanord (A)rchitects JLindeberg AF-LA 13

14 photo: Andrea Martiradonna photo: Andrea Martiradonna The Cube Stockholm Jakobs torg Stockholm The European tour of THE CUBE continues The traveling restaurant was opened in London June 2012, on top of the Royal Festival Hall at Southbank Centre, where it remains until September About two weeks later on June 18 a twin structure will sit on the Royal Opera House in Stockholm, until October 21 THE CUBE is a nomadic, stateless and cosmopolitan piece of architecture, a pavilion designed to host a small, temporary restaurant Originating from Electrolux's concept of an itinerant restaurant, THE CUBE has been conceived and organized by the Belgian event agency Absolute Blue; the design of the pavilion, as well as the interior design, was developed by the Italian firm Park Associati, Milano Designed to visit unexpected and dramatic locations throughout Europe, THE CUBE was launched in Brussels in april 2011, where it remained until July on the arc of the Parc du Cinquantenaire In December 2011 the restaurant was opened in the heart of Milano sitting on a roof in Piazza photo: Andrea Martiradonna Project is not public!
