6 LOCATION MAPS Central Richmond The property at st Avenue is located in the Central Richmond District by the gates leading to the renown Sea Cliff neighborhood of San Francisco. The neighborhood is situated in the northwest corner of the city, developed initially in the late 19th century. The Richmond is in many ways defined by its relation to the parks; bordered by Golden Gate Park on the south, the Pacific Ocean to the west, and Lincoln Park, Land's End, Mountain Lake Park and the Presidio of San Francisco to the north, bisected by the Presidio Greenbelt and with the Marin Headlands and the Golden Gate Bridge in full and clear view, the neighborhood, which is otherwise a simple but far-reaching grid, has a feeling of being encapsulated by nature. It is thus known as a safe, peaceful, serene, family neighborhood, and one of the city's largest as a whole, both in terms of housing stock and population. The Richmond has many influences from the Chinese-American culture. One of its three commercial strips, Clement Street in the inner Richmond segment is sometimes called the second Chinatown due to its highly-rated Chinese restaurants. The restaurants are even rated higher than the ones in The Chinatown of San Francisco itself. The other two commercial strips are Geary Boulevard and Balboa Street. The Richmond also has deep Irish and Russian roots and has many Catholic and Orthodox churches. Sea Cliff is built with impressive mansions and splendid properties perched on cliffs overlooking the Golden Gate. It also has a reputation for privacy and discretion. Most San Franciscans know of Sea Cliff, and although they are free to walk its streets and sidewalks, few have the means to live there, so it has become an exclusive enclave. Some of its streets and homes are similar to Beverly Hills, with manicured yards and incongruous palm trees swaying in the fog. Sea Cliff s first real residents of the neighborhood might have been Chinese fishermen who established a camp at China Beach in the late 19th century. Mark Daniels, the famed landscape architect who created the 17-mile drive around Pebble Beach, began designing the neighborhood and landscaping some of its finer homes in the 1910s, shortly after the earthquake and fire of 1906, when people were looking to get away from the rubble and charred remains of neighborhoods such as Nob Hill. Sea Cliff has two links to public transit: the 29 line, which maneuvers along 25th Avenue on the neighborhood s eastern edge, before turning into the Presidio, and the 1 line, which heads back and forth on California Street (the 1AX is an option for downtown commuters). The Kittredge School (co-ed, K-8) and Katherine Delmar Burke School (girls, K-8) are the private schools that cater to the area. No public schools lie within the neighborhood, though Alamo Elementary School, Presidio Middle School, and George Washington high school each lie to the south of California Street.
