Collective ambition: Education 1

Specialist knowledge: design solutions that work 2

In 1984 we opened the doors with our first project, a new building for an independent Christian school at Regents Park. This project set the tone: clients who needed specialist advice to satisfy particular needs and who (often) had tight budgets. Over time our education clients expanded because we were regarded as providing services that were empathetic with client requirements. We had a desire to assist with their particular needs but we also brought specialist knowledge and hence designed solutions that worked. We came to understand that specialisation, a particular knowledge of particular areas, was imperative if we wished to provide our clients with appropriate advice. While we now have various industry segments that we service, we do so with specialist, industry specific in-house expertise in those areas. Whether it be Education, Aged Care, Social Housing, Automotive or Churches, we have a team of people who understand the specific requirements of that segment. Industry knowledge is important and so is empathy with and for the client. We are a client focused organisation and we have developed an approach for interacting with our clients to ensure that their vision and requirements for their project is identified and realised. We call this collective ambition and you can read more on this later in the booklet. 1

Our vision, mission and values 2

Our vision, mission and values statements underscore and define our business and design philosophies. Vision To be the architects of first choice within our chosen markets. Mission Stanton Dahl are committed to creating fine buildings that are responsive to our clients needs, efficient and economical. As a consequence, we aim to be the architects of first choice in the markets in which we specialise. Values Integrity We mean what we say We tell the truth and don t hide facts We uphold impeccable business practices Commitment We have a sense of obligation We have a duty of care We adopt client goals Innovation We look for best and appropriate answers We are creative Pro-activity We make things happen We attack everything with determination We are always looking for the other solution Fun Our aim is to have a high sense of satisfaction about all we do We will develop a good social atmosphere We believe work should be enjoyable Mutual respect We understand that values can differ and we respect people and their differences Reliability We will maintain our values in all circumstances We will meet our undertakings We can be depended upon 3

Our approach to design: collective ambition 4

This concept of collective ambition embodies our collaborative approach to project design from concept to completion. We want to ensure that the project, when delivered, satisfies the requirements of our client. 5

Work collectively Listen actively We design with a purpose using specialist knowledge. Our focus is to achieve our clients objectives. In a context of competing interests and diverse teams, Stanton Dahl works collectively with our clients to understand the purpose of every project. The team has developed a model to ensure this knowledge is shared with all and understood by all. We call this collective ambition. We operate differently to our peers in the industry. At Stanton Dahl, we listen beyond just words and facts we seek to delve into the emotions and minds of our clients. We ask questions to ensure we truly understand the reasons for undertaking this venture; what is their vision for their project. Only through doing this can we ensure that our architectural response accurately embodies our client s ambition at both a practical and creative level. 6

Design collaboratively Partner meaningfully We focus on fulfilling the client s vision, not ours. It is our goal to turn your desires and dreams into reality this is what we believe our role is as architects. The Stanton Dahl team actively cooperate with all project stakeholders to design a facility that achieves the collective ambition of our client and ourselves Our commitment to our clients is unwavering. We truly value our clients and their opinions, suggestions and differences. As partners in your project, we consistently work with you to maintain a balanced partnership and never lose focus of the collective ambition. We strive to produce a result that exceeds your expectations. 7

Providing architectural services to the Independent Christian School segment was the foundation on which Stanton Dahl was originally established. Over the past 30 years we have seen traditional school buildings evolve into the 21st century interactive learning environments of today. We realise that for different educational clients there is a spectrum of engagement with modern learning approaches, which also differs depending on subjects catered for and student ages. Our aim is to provide flexible, comfortable and responsive internal and external learning environments that provide students the opportunity to maximise their potential and actively engage in their own education. Stanton Dahl have a specialist design development and project management team for the education segment, with a large portfolio of completed works. We value collaboration with clients and we recognise that a deep understanding of a school s values and vision will assist in the delivery of better design solutions. After three decades working in the education segment, Stanton Dahl continue to work on new stages of development for some of our first school clients, testament to our commitment to developing enduring collaborative partnerships with our clients. We are committed to the design of positive and engaging learning environments. Our collaborative approach helps us to understand the needs of your school community, enabling us to achieve thoughtful and long-lasting solutions. 9

Project delivery The brief Masterplan Project control This is one of the most important elements of the project and is developed in collaboration with the client. Embodying the concept of collective ambition, the brief outlines the requirements and facilities, sets the score, provides instruction, describes the interaction of spaces and much more. The masterplan of the site is the descriptive interpretation of the brief. It is an evolving document and requires flexibility of planning to respond to changing requirements. Adherence to project management techniques ensure that budget, program, sustainability and quality targets are met. Clients are kept up to date during all stages of the process with reports provided at regular intervals. 10

Stanton Dahl employ a broad range of staff beyond the expertise of architecture and project management, including in-house access and interior design. In addition, all our documentation is completed in 3D, enabling perspectives, fly-through animations and 3D virtual models to be produced if required. Authorities approvals Documentation & quality assurance Program & budget We manage this stage efficiently and effectively to ensure the most expedient approval process, whether that is via a development consent or complying development path. It has always been our aim to ensure that our documentation provides good coverage of the works and thorough coordination of secondary consultants documents, all in accordance with our comprehensive quality assurance system. Stanton Dahl are fully conversant and experienced in the financial constraints that apply to all projects. We pride ourselves on a long record of projects completed within time and budget, and we employ every endeavour to ensure the continuation of this record. 11

Relevant experience Stanton Dahl has extensive relevant experience. 18 Client: Sydney Anglican Schools Corporation Type: Secondary school classrooms and library Budget: $5m Status: Completed Completion date: July 2014 Thomas Hassall Anglican College Stanton Dahl have been working with the Sydney Anglican Schools Corporation for over 15 years and commenced initial master planning of Thomas Hassall Anglican College in Over that time, the student population has risen from 900 to an expected The site footprint has expanded 4 times the original size due to the ever increasing student body. Stanton Dahl worked collectively with the Corporation and college to develop and implement a brief that provides a multi-purpose classroom and library facility that reflects the current 21st century learning environments, where flexibility within the teaching spaces and access to technology is seamless and without obstacles, where group learning of any size, both internal and external to the building, is encouraged. The building is located strategically near the centre of the campus and represents the first Senior College building within the renewed masterplan for the expanded campus. The project consists of a three level building, with flexible learning and staff spaces on the upper floor (which can also be opened up to provide an examination space), open plan library, study spaces and IT support on the ground floor, and school maintenance facilities and rainwater tank storage within the basement. All student facilities incorporate generous access to external break-out spaces. The building incorporates energy saving initiatives for lighting and air conditioning to minimise the school s operating costs. 16

Client: Our Lady of Mercy College, Parramatta Type: Multi-purpose facility capable of seating 1200 people providing additional sport, play and teaching spaces Budget: $8m Status: Under construction Construction: 2016 Ailsa Mackinnon Centre The Ailsa Mackinnon Centre at Our Lady of Mercy College (OLMC) Parramatta, is a significant architectural contribution to the school s extensive built environment. As the final major construction item of OLMC Parramatta s masterplan, the Ailsa Mackinnon Centre provides a new whole of school community facility on the last parcel of developable land on the campus. Stanton Dahl collaborated with OLMC to form a brief for the facility capable of seating 1200 people and providing sporting facilities, play and teaching spaces. This collaboration during the concept design phase culminated in a design approach focused on a collective ambition statement around community and gathering. The site of the Ailsa Mackinnon Centre is within a significant heritage precinct, located adjacent to the first convent established in Australia. The design has responded to a need to minimise impact upon the surrounding heritage fabric, while utilising the available building envelope. The building envelope has been manipulated to create a statement zero setback street frontage on O Connell Street, and taken advantage of height wherever possible, creating a building that is responsive to its heritage site context. The building is inherently flexible, designed to deal with the variable needs of large gatherings of people. The building provides facilities for numerous sports and school community gatherings. These large multipurpose spaces are bookended to the east by general learning spaces that are designed to be variable in size to provide opportunities for varying learning activities. The rooftop has been designed as trafficable to maximise the play space within the restricted site. Developed from a strong collaborative partnership with the school, Stanton Dahl vigorously approached a design process of exploration and experimentation to deliver a design solution that embodies the school s vision of community and gathering in a flexible, contemporary facility. 18

Client: Catholic Education Office, Diocese of Parramatta Type: Primary school library/ resource centre Budget: Not disclosed Status: Completed Completion date: January 2010 St Margaret Marys Stanton Dahl Architects have worked with the Parramatta Diocese Catholic Education Office (CEO) for a number of years and have just completed an upgrade of existing traditional classrooms throughout the school into flexible 21st century learning spaces. The CEO invited Stanton Dahl to upgrade the school s inadequate library facilities as part of the Federal Governments BER programme in 2009/2010. Stanton Dahl worked with the CEO and the school to develop a brief, where an existing library space was to be converted into an effective 21st century resource centre to complement the recently refurbished classroom spaces. The new library space aims to be a fun learning environment and deliver technology in an open and flexible manner. By opening up existing spaces, expanding into an adjacent undercroft space and introducing areas to accommodate groups of all sizes, the completed project has reinvigorated a tired and disjointed facility and created a vibrant and exciting space full of bright colours and modern flexible furniture for students to use. To further enhance the fun learning environment, the library space opens directly onto a new outdoor learning school assembly and play area, providing an excellent link between formal and informal activities. 20

Client: Seventh-Day Adventist Church Greater Sydney Conference Type: Masterplan and whole-school development Budget: $35 million for whole campus development Status: Planning approved Construction: July 2015 Wahroonga Adventist School The new Wahroonga Adventist School campus is a staged development for the relocation and expansion of the existing school on an urban greenfield site, within Wahroonga Estate. Stanton Dahl has been working with the school over a number of years to develop a masterplan that enables the expansion of the school from a primary school to a K-12 facility, relocating from its current location adjacent to the SAN hospital to a new location within the Estate. The new campus has been planned for staged construction, linked to the forecast growth of the school to an 800 student community, with the design expressing the school s vision of three schools in one (Junior, Middle and Senior schools) creating a flexible, integrated and contemporary urban campus. The new school development is sited along the busy Fox Valley Road, with the three schools forming an integrated streetscape elevation engaging with the public domain. Each of the proposed buildings are designed for interconnectivity, linked via an internal street and served by a connected basement level. Architectural strategies have been employed to appropriately articulate building mass and scale within the surrounding context. These include expressed modulated façades and screening, with lantern boxes clad in a translucent skin to the upper level to create lightness. Accommodation on this level includes music rooms, ceramics and visual arts, with the opacity of the translucent panels varying in response to each function. Vertical metal screening forms a continuous spine through the internal circulation street of the campus, acting functionally as both shading and balustrade elements. 22
