3 In 1984 we opened the doors with our first project, a new building for an independent Christian school at Regents Park. This project set the tone: clients who needed specialist advice to satisfy particular needs and who (often) had tight budgets. Over time our education clients expanded because we were regarded as providing services that were empathetic with client requirements. We had a desire to assist with their particular needs but we also brought specialist knowledge and hence designed solutions that worked. We came to understand that specialisation, a particular knowledge of particular areas, was imperative if we wished to provide our clients with appropriate advice. While we now have various industry segments that we service, we do so with specialist, industry specific in-house expertise in those areas. Whether it be Education, Aged Care, Social Housing, Automotive or Churches, we have a team of people who understand the specific requirements of that segment. Industry knowledge is important and so is empathy with and for the client. We are a client focused organisation and we have developed an approach for interacting with our clients to ensure that their vision and requirements for their project is identified and realised. We call this collective ambition and you can read more on this later in the booklet. 3

7 Stanton Dahl are specialists in the area of automotive design. From initial concept planning of new facilities on greenfield sites to alterations and additions of existing facilities, we bring expertise to projects and other associated works, which ensures benefits to you. With our extensive experience, we have a thorough understanding of current trends and functionality requirements within dealership facilities. Our knowledge base and experience in the Automotive segment enables us to provide you with a well-planned, cost-effective dealership facility, not only in the building construction, but also in planning efficiencies that directly contribute to better management, resulting in improved running costs for you. In addition, our designs provide a statement to the community aiding in the marketing of your dealership. As Preferred Architects for two automotive brands, our specialised team within Stanton Dahl is dedicated purely to automotive design. 7

10 Client: Phil Gilbert Hyundai Type: New showroom and basement parking Budget: $3.85m Status: Completed Completion date: October 2014 Phil Gilbert Hyundai The Phil Gilbert Hyundai dealership consists of a new showroom and basement parking on Parramatta Road in Sydney, NSW. Stanton Dahl has collaborated with the client throughout the Phil Gilbert Hyundai project. Meetings were held at various stages to ensure the development complied with both the brands standards and the client s requirements. The new showroom successfully showcases and promotes the new Hyundai corporate identity. Providing a strong brand statement and a commanding presence on one of Sydney s major roads was the main focus of the Phil Gilbert Hyundai project. With prime exposure to the busy Sydney road, the two storey showroom stands out to customers as they approach the dealership from either direction. The visibility of the showroom is further enhanced by an exposed feature display space, reaching out towards the street for promoting selected cars. An angled facade aims to draw the attention of the passing trade from both directions to maximise the showroom exposure with the complex feature Hyundai cladding giving the showroom a presence amongst other dealerships. Stanton Dahl has delivered a showroom that upholds the brand name with sophistication and class, ensuring the exposure to the potential clientele is positive and stands out amongst its competitors. Phil Gilbert Hyundai was a new client that has now approached Stanton Dahl on subsequent projects, valuing the success and standards of the projects as well as the collective response to the clients needs. 10

12 Client: Brighton Honda Type: Alteration to existing showroom Budget: $720,000 Completion date: January 2014 Brighton Honda Honda Australia is currently implementing an updated external CI across the network. The striking feature Red Wall creates an easily recognisable brand statement through the use of colour and scale. Stanton Dahl worked closely with Honda throughout the development of this project, with regular site visits and a collaborative approach to not only the Brighton project, but all projects within the Honda roll-out. Brighton Honda features a large new feature red wall with associated signage that increases the exposure of the dealership to passing trade. The red wall element enhances the Honda brand statement and was developed in conjunction with Stanton Dahl as a new corporate identity item along with the louvre and feature entry elements. Alterations at Brighton were completed whilst the showroom remained open for trading. The project has addressed the location by using visual elements to draw the attention of the passing trade and take full advantage of the close proximity to the busy street. Stanton Dahl have worked collectively with Honda to deliver a dealership that meets the requirements and successfully promotes the brand name. 12

14 Client: Woodleys Motors Type: New showroom and workshop Budget: $1.5m Status: Completed Completion date: December 2013 Woodleys Motors Volvo/ Skoda The relatively small dealership required careful consideration and planning due to site constraints and budget. The project provides a permanent showroom and workshop for the Skoda range along with Volvo within the tight footprint. The dealership features a new 8 car showroom and workshop that adds a further dimension to the overall function of the spaces both internally and externally. The new glass-and-steel structure successfully compliments the two brands, bringing the sophistication and class of a city dealership to our rural clients. A glazed office space overlooks the showroom, which has received a positive response from the client as it provides views of the showroom as well as an adjacent dealership across the road also owned by Woodleys. Working collaboratively with the client, Stanton Dahl have delivered an eye catching showroom that cleverly provides dedicated display space for both Skoda and Volvo within the local network of Woodleys dealerships. Woodleys Skoda & Volvo dealership brings city architecture to regional NSW. 14

16 Client: Phil Gilbert Toyota Type: New showroom Budget: $3.6m Status: Start of construction Completion date: 2016 Phil Gilbert Toyota The Phil Gilbert Toyota dealership consists of a new showroom with feature car display located on Parramatta Road in Sydney, NSW. Stanton Dahl have designed a number of dealerships in Sydney for the Phil Gilbert Motor Company. In mid 2012, Stanton Dahl were engaged to design a new Toyota Dealership on a challenging flood affected but highly prominent site. We collaborated with the client throughout the design process to ensure the dealership would meet their needs and the approval of Toyota. Toyota Motor Company Australia described the outcome as the best starting point we have ever seen. The showroom is designed over two levels to maximise exposure of the dealership to passing trade, whilst providing the required parking, vehicular circulation and external display on a narrow, tight site. The new dealership is to be an 11 car showroom (9 internal display spaces and 2 internal delivery bays) incorporating a feature car display with hoist capable of raising the featured vehicle to increase exposure. Showroom administration facilities and services are organised as a central core to maximise the efficiency of the operation and to reduce build costs. 16

18 Client: Northway Honda Type: New showroom & Service Centre Budget: $6.3m Status: Completed Completion date: February 2011 Northway Honda, Bundoora Northway Honda consists of Honda s new flagship showroom and service centre in Bundoora, North Melbourne, Vic. Northway Honda engaged Stanton Dahl, as recommended by Honda Australia, to design a new showroom and workshop on a prominent greenfield site in the north Melbourne suburb of Bundoora in mid The dealership was to be one of the first to employ Honda s current Corporate Image Branding in Australia. The dealership consists of a cylindrical two-storey showroom at the front of the site with a full service workshop at its rear bridged by an administrative core over two stories. Site circulation is centrally organised, diagonally across the site to ensure ease of access, efficient vehicular movement and customer safety. The showroom s innovative design maximises exposure on the prominent corner intersection and opens the dealership to all aspects of customer arrival. Vehicular movement in the double storey showroom is achieved with an open scissor lift the first of its kind in an automotive showroom in Australia. Northway Honda is a top-tier dealership (level 5). It was the first to incorporated all of Honda current Corporate Image Branding Elements and has come to represent the ideal facility for Honda s Rollout Program. 18

20 Client: Trinity Hyundai Type: Major alterations and additions to existing car showroom Budget: $1.8m Status: Completed Completion date: June 2015 Trinity Hyundai, Cairns The Hyundai Trinity dealership consists of major alterations and additions to an existing car showroom in Cairns, Qld. Stanton Dahl Architects were engaged to assist in the application of the new HMCA Global Dealership Space Identity onto a complex existing building in Cairns, QLD. Following the successful design resolution and prompt manufacturer approval, Stanton Dahl were engaged by the client to complete the construction documents for the successful delivery of the Hyundai showroom. Works at Trinity Hyundai involved major alterations and additions of an existing Hyundai showroom to bring it up to the current corporate standards. The new showroom consists of 9 internal display vehicles providing excellent exposure and brand statement back to a busy intersection in Cairns. The tall intricate bronze facade and frameless glazing gives a commanding presence for both the dealer and manufacturer 20

22 Relevant experience Stanton Dahl has extensive relevant experience on a wide range of projects. We have worked with manufacturers and individual dealers designing automotive buildings such as showrooms, workshops (and ancillary spaces) and have experience in both new builds as well as extensions and refurbishments. We also provide services for developing and rolling-out corporate image documents, feasibility and master planning services and specialist design services. The following list includes a sample of these projects, the nature of which could be regarded as particularly relevant. Selected case study projects are further detailed in the following pages. Busselton Hyundai, Busselton, WA New 6 car showroom and 7 bay workshop for stand alone showroom development in a remote location. Construction cost $1.8m. Peter Stevens Motorworld, Ballarat, VIC Major alterations and additions to existing dealership. Works include 3 showrooms and associated workshop. Phil Gilbert Hyundai, Croydon, NSW New 12 car showroom and basement parking built with prime exposure to a busy Sydney road. Phil Gilbert Toyota, Five Dock, NSW New 11 car showroom featuring car hoist to provide greater exposure for feature car display on a major Sydney road. Construction cost $3m. Brighton Honda, Brighton, VIC Alterations to existing showroom as part of Honda s external CI upgrade program. Works included the introduction of a feature red wall along the main showroom frontage. 22
23 Travis Honda, Frankston, VIC Major alterations to an existing building, resulting in a new 8 car showroom with feature red wall giving greater presence to the street frontage. Woodleys Motors, Tamworth, NSW New 8 car Skoda and Volvo showroom with associated workshop on a tight corner site. Construction cost $1.5m. Nunawading Hyundai, Nunawading, VIC Alterations and additions to an existing showroom to provide a new 11 car showroom on a prominent corner site in Nunawading, VIC. Doncaster Holden, Doncaster, VIC Alterations and additions to an existing split level showroom to provide 2 new showrooms, Hyundai and Holden. Cranbourne Hyundai, Cranbourne, VIC New 12 car Hyundai dealership with associated 12 bay workshop on a prominent corner site. Northam Hyundai, Northam, WA Alterations and additions to provide a new 4 car Hyundai showroom onto an existing dealership and workshop building in a remote location. Alto Hyundai, Artarmon Alterations and additions to an existing showroom to provide 10 car showroom with prime exposure. Currently under construction. Peter Kittle Holden, Alice Springs, NT Alterations and additions to an existing building to provide new showrooms for Holden and Nissan, totalling 9 cars. Annlyn Motors, Jamisontown, NSW Major alterations and additions to an existing showroom to provide new showrooms for Renault and Volvo, totalling 13 cars. Northway Honda, Bundoora, VIC New top tier dealership including a double level showroom with a first of its kind scissor lift and 7 car full service workshop. Pickering JLR & BMW, Darwin, NT Alterations and additions resulting in new 6 and 5 car showrooms for BMW and JRL and an adjoining 8 car workshop. Trinity Hyundai, Cairns, QLD Major alterations and additons to an existing Hyundai showroom consisting of 9 display vehicles. Peter Kittle Toyota & Hyundai, Kudla, SA Two new 6 car showrooms for Toyota and Hyundai and a new 12 car workshop located around a central two storey administration zone. Pickering Hyundai, Townsville, QLD Alterations and additions to an existing building resulting in a 12 car Hyundai dealership. 23

28 Project delivery The brief Masterplan Project control This is one of the most important elements of the project and is developed in collaboration with the client. Embodying the concept of collective ambition, the brief outlines the requirements and facilities, sets the score, provides instruction, describes the interaction of spaces and much more. The masterplan of the site is the descriptive interpretation of the brief. It is an evolving document and requires flexibility of planning to respond to changing requirements. Adherence to project management techniques ensure that budget, program, sustainability and quality targets are met. Clients are kept up to date during all stages of the process with reports provided at regular intervals. 28
29 Stanton Dahl employ a broad range of staff beyond the expertise of architecture and project management, including in-house access and interior design. In addition, all our documentation is completed in 3D, enabling perspectives, fly-through animations and 3D virtual models to be produced if required. Authorities approvals Documentation & quality assurance Program & budget We manage this stage efficiently and effectively to ensure the most expedient approval process, whether that is via a development consent or complying development path. It has always been our aim to ensure that our documentation provides good coverage of the works and thorough coordination of secondary consultants documents, all in accordance with our comprehensive quality assurance system. Stanton Dahl are fully conversant and experienced in the financial constraints that apply to all projects. 31 Shayne Evans Practice Manager Senior Associate Architect Alan Werry Automotive Segment Leader Shayne is a senior architect having received a Bachelor degree and the University Medal in Architecture from the University of New South Wales in Since this time Shayne has taken a lead role in the design, documentation and administration of a number of different projects ranging from high end residential work to low cost schools. Several projects that Shayne has worked on have won national design awards. Shayne has a keen interest in using his architectural skills to assist disadvantaged communities achieve high quality built environments without having to spend a lot of money. To that end Shayne spends some of his time providing architectural services to such communities. This provides many opportunities to identify and implement creative and low cost solutions to some very complex problems. Shayne is a registered Architect and is a Member of the Australian Institute of Architects. Qualifications Bachelor of Architecture University of New South Wales University Medal 2002 Registered Architect (7686) Member of the Australian Institute of Architects Alan is a senior architect graduating from Sydney University in He joined Stanton Dahl in 2008 to head up our Automotive segment, having previously been involved as director of his own architectural companies for the previous 20 years. Prior to joining Stanton Dahl, he had been working for 10 years for a major international automotive company and the work for this company has included new dealerships and service facilities for the brand. Alan was also responsible for developing and documenting a new corporate image for their dealerships Australiawide that has also influenced the approach to C.I. for the brand internationally. Whilst Alan s passion is for excellence in design, his involvement in the D & C area (particularly in the area of club facilities), has provided him with invaluable practical experience that ensures the project delivery takes into account a high level of buildability. 32 Tim Steele Graduate Architect Peter Rodgers Graduate Architect Tim is a Graduate Architect who joined Stanton Dahl in 2008 whilst completing his studies at the University of Technology Sydney. During his time at Stanton Dahl, Tim has gained valuable experience in several of the office segments with a constant focus on the Automotive Segment. Over his years in the office, Tim has developed a sound understanding for the operational and functional requirements of the Automotive Industry making him an invaluable member of the Automotive Segment. Since joining Stanton Dahl, Tim has been heavily involved in the development and application of the Corporate Identities for two key brands across Australia. In 2012 Tim was instrumental in the development of HMCA facility guidelines that aided in the roll out of their 3D CI package. Tim s keen eye for design and attention to detail has allowed him to hone his skills as a Project Architect and oversee the construction of a $4million project in a key Sydney location. With a solid client focus, Tim has developed strong working relationships with his client base and is highly regarded for his drive to exceed the client s needs. Qualifications Masters of Architecture University of Technology Sydney Peter graduated from the University of Tasmania in 2011 after completing a Masters of Architecture. Later that year, Peter moved to Sydney to join Stanton Dahl Architects in order to further his architectural and professional development. During his time at Stanton Dahl, Peter has worked in both the Social Housing and Automotive segments of the office, being heavily involved in the documentation and co-ordination of several Social Housing projects and the design development and documentation of various brands of car showrooms across Australia. Whilst at Stanton Dahl, Peter has developed a strong aptitude for 3D presentations and is highly regarded for the quality renders he produces. In recent times, Peter has been heavily involved in the development and application of the current HMCA GDSI facility guidelines that aid in the roll out of the new Hyundai Corporate Identity.
