If you would like more information, please contact us at INTRODUCTION The records of the Smith and Longview Dam and Reservoir contain National Architectural and Engineering Record/Historic American Buildings Survey photographs, field records, historical and descriptive data, maps, and drawings of historic architectural structures at the Smithville and Longview Lakes, MO. Included are Longview Farm, Rockford School, James Poff and Sophia Rollins residences, Reuben Ross barn, and Waddell "A" truss bridge. DONOR INFORMATION The records were donated to the State Historical Society of Missouri by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers through Donald L. Fritts on 3 December 1980 (Accession No. SUNP2351). An addition was made on 2 April 1981 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers through Donald L. Fritts (Accession No. SUNP2365). James Poff house. f. 33 OVERSIZE Measured Drawings sheets 1-5 Reuben Ross Barn. This barn was built by Reuben Ross in 1925 to service his 140-acre farm. Waddell, 13 November 1894, this bridge is the only surviving example of the truss type identified by the Historic American Engineering Record as of The "A" truss was conceived as an economical short-span, pin-connected

Located at Longview and Raytown Roads in Jackson County, the original wood-frame building was replaced in 1916 by a brick structure. The school was one of four one-room elementary schools built in 1916 by the Hickman Mills Consolidated School District No. 1 and designed by J.H. Longview Farm, completed in 1914, was an estate built for Robert Alexander Long, a wealthy Kansas City lumberman. Located twenty miles south of Kansas City, Longview was intended to be both a rural retreat for the family and a working farm. Each activity was located in a specific area, such as the greenhouse, dairy, hog, show horse and work horse complexes, spread out over the 1700-acre estate with employees' housing interspersed. Designed by Henry F. Hoit, a prominent Kansas City architect, the buildings of Longview form an ensemble which is reinforced by the consistent use of stucco walls and red tile roofs. Longview was well-known for its fine breeds of show horses, pure milk, prize hogs, and prize roses, as well as the philanthropic interests of its owner, Robert A. Long. The work horse complex, located in the southwest corner of the farm, consisted of the work horse barn, paint/carpentry/ blacksmith shop, wagon shed, implement shed, and boarding house surrounding a central green. The general manager's house, the assistant manager's house, the six workers' cottages, and gate lodge no. 2 are all examples of the living accommodations provided on the farm for married workers who had varying levels of responsibility.
