7 Notes on the Contributors MICHAEL BENTLEY was born at Rotherham in Yorkshire in He was educated there and at the University of Sheffield, where he took first-class honours in Modem History and Politics in For the following two years he was a research student at StJohn's College, Cambridge. In 1971 he took up his present post as lecturer in Modem History at the University of Sheffield, where he is working on a study of liberalism in the 1920s. EDWARD BRISTOW received his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1970 and is now assistant professor of British Studies at the New England College in Arundel. KENNETH D. BRoWN was educated at universities in Britain and Canada and has been a lecturer in Social and Economic History at The Queen's University of Belfast since He is the author of Labour and Unemployment (Newton Abbot, 1971) and several articles on labour history and welfare policy. He is currently writing a new biography of John Bums. PETER K. CLINE received his Ph.D. from Stanford University and is now assistant professor of History at the University of California at Davis. His most recent publication, 'Reopening the Case of the Lloyd George Coalition and the Postwar Economic Transition, ', appeared in the l ournal of British Studies (November 1970). At present he is completing a book on Government and Economic Policy EDWARD DAviD was born in 1944 and educated at University College, Swansea, and St John's College, Cambridge. He has published articles in the Historical Journal and the Welsh History Review, and has written introductions for new editions of The Liberal Year Book, (1971) and The Liberal and Radical Year Book, (1971). Since 1969 he has been a lecturer in History in the University of Bristol. RoY DouGLAS, who was originally a scientist, turned to history and is now a lecturer at the University of Surrey. He has five times been a liberal parliamentary candidate and is the author of The History of the Liberal Party, (1971). D. J. FoRD was born in 1945 and educated at the University of

8 viii NOTES ON THE CONTRIBUTORS Liverpool and the University of Kent. He subsequently worked for the British Council and is engaged in research at the London School of Economics. CHRISTOPHER J. KAuFFMAN received his Ph.D. from St Louis University in He was associate editor of Continuum from 1962 to 1971 and is currently a member of the editorial board of the St Louis Review. He is the author of several contributions to the Modem European and British sections of J. M. Sanchez (ed.), Great Events and their Interpretations (1973). He is an assistant professor of History at StLouis University. JoHN W. MASON was hom in America in 1939 and graduated from Franklin and Marshall College, Pennsylvania, in 1960; he came to England in 1964 and took a B.A.Hons. from the University of London in 1968; currently he is engaged in postgraduate research on 'Late Nineteenth-Century Anti-Socialist Thought' in the Department of Economic and Social History in the University of Birmingham; he is lecturer in History at the Boumville College of Further Education, Birmingham. KENNETH 0. MoRGAN is Fellow and Praelector in Modem History and Politics at The Queen's College, Oxford. Among his various publications are Wales in British Politics (1963); David Lloyd George: Welsh Radical as World Statesman (1963); Freedom or Sacrilege (1966); Keir Hardie (1967); The Age of Lloyd George (1971). Most recently he has edited Lloyd George: Family Letters (1973). Dr Morgan is also the editor of the Welsh History Review. NoRBERT C. SoLDON was educated at Pennsylvania State University and the University of Delaware where he completed his doctoral dissertation in He is Professor of History at West Chester State College and is currently working on the new model employers and political reform in mid-victorian Britain. CHRIS WRIGLEY is a lecturer in Economic History in the Department of Economics at Loughborough University of Technology. Previously he was a lecturer in the Department of Economic and Social History at The Queen's University of Belfast. He is co-editor (with J. M. Goldstrom) of The Condition of the Working Class, (Four vols) and has a book, Lloyd George and the Labour Movement, forthcoming.
