26 photo: John Saeyong Ra photo: John Saeyong Ra TKTS Booth & Redevelopment Times Square New York New York NY TKTS was a project that began in 2000 with an international competition to re-design the existing TKTS-booth at the centre of Times Square The competition was the largest in New York's history at the time and attracted 683 entrants from 31 countries While the competition brief simply requested designs for a small scale architectural structure to replace the existing booth, we re-framed the problem as one requiring an urban design response Our proposal for the new ticketing booth consists of a tiered red 'resin' staircase that rises to form a backdrop for the nearby statue of Father Duffy, simultaneously providing roofing to the booth and a public space above The shell of the booth is lit from within, generating a powerful glow at night The design's iconic strength has seen it become instantly part of the identity of the city and popular culture Widely acclaimed, it has received an unprecedented 18 international and national awards photo: John Saeyong Ra Floor area/size m² Associate architect Associate architect Choi Ropiha Fighera Perkins Eastman PKSB Times Square Alliance, Theatre Development Fund, Coalition for Father Duffy and City of New York CHROFI 26

27 photo: Andre Staalenhoef photo: Andre Staalenhoef Edward Durrell Stone House East 64th Street 130 New York New York NY In a staid district of late-nineteenth-century town houses on New York City's Upper East Side, the romantically lacy, stark-white concrete grille in front of the Edward Durrell Stone house has raised a ruckus since it was constructed in 1956 When the grille first appeared at 130 E 64th Street, more than 20 years before the Upper East Side Historic District was created, Stone had only his neighbors and architectural critics to contend with (neither group was pleased) Nowadays, in a landmark district, such an alteration to a facade would be absolutely prohibited Yet the controversial little town house has become an unofficial landmark of its own and largely for the addition that many still consider an eyesore This turnabout has led some of the city's big guns to take the surprising stance of defending the screen on its architectural merits According to longtime New York City Landmarks Commissioner Thomas Pike, standards for landmark status have changed significantly over the years 1956 Edward Durell Stone yep photo: Andre Staalenhoef 27
