7 photo: Alberto M Sánchez photo: Alberto M Sánchez Hearst Building Eighth Ave at W57 Street New York New York The Hearst Tower in New York is the world headquarters of the Hearst Corporation The former 6-story headquarters building was commissioned by the founder, William Randolph Hearst and awarded to the architect Joseph Urban The building was completed in 1928 The original cast stone façade has been preserved in the new design as a designated Landmark site Originally built as the base for a proposed skyscraper, the construction of the tower was postponed due to the Great Depression The new tower addition was completed nearly 80 years later The uncommon triangular framing pattern of the tower (also known as a diagrid) required (reportedly) about 20% less than a conventional steel frame Hearst Tower was the first skyscraper to break ground in NYC after September 11, 2001 It's the first green building completed in NYC, with a number of environmental considerations built into the plan The building was designed to use 25% less energy than the minimum requirements for the city of NY Project is not public! 11 Tribeca Issey MiYake Hudson Street 119 New York New York NY 'Shop Until You're Blown Away' is the message of the Issey MiYake flagship store in Tribeca, New York It was designed by Frank O Gehry and his former protégé, Gordon Kipping of Manhattan-based GTECTS The designs of the eternally experimental Japanese couturier have always carried a whiff of chaos 'The Tornado' is the name of the 25-foot-high titanium column-like structure which dominates the Hudson Street shop It's pure Gehry - and yet if you squint you'd swear you're looking at a classic pleated MiYake dress Extending from a shaft emerging from the cellar floor to a turbulent sprawl engulfing the ceiling of the ground floor, the Tornado does energize the whole room, both engaging and provoking the shopper photo: Roderick Trompert 2001 Main designer, Gehry Partners Gordon Kipping Issey MiYake Roderick Monday - Saturday: / Sunday: Subway 1, Franklin St Station 11

17 AT&T Corporate Headquarters Madison Avenue 550 New York New York The Sony Tower, formerly the AT&T Building, is a 647 feet (197 m) tall, 37-story highrise skyscraper located at 550 Madison Avenue between 55th Street and 56th Street in the New York City borough of ManhattanIt was designed by architect Philip Johnson and partner John Burgee, and was constructed in 1984 It became immediately controversial for its ornamental top (sometimes mocked as "Chippendale", after the open pediments characteristic of the famous English designer's bookcases and other cabinetry), but enjoyed for its spectacular arched entranceway, measuring about seven stories in height With these ornamental additions, the building challenged architectural modernism's demand for stark functionalism and purely efficient design For this it is considered by many critics to be a prime exemplar of postmodern architecture 1984 Main designer, Philip Johnson John Burgee pkrajewski_pl The building is open during office hours Accessible from Madison Avenue at 56th Street 17

18 Lipstick Building Third Avenue 885 New York New York The Lipstick Building (also known as 53rd at Third) is a 453 foot (138 meters) tall skyscraper located at 885 Third Avenue, between East 53rd Street and 54th Street, across from the Citigroup Center in Manhattan, New York City, It was completed in 1986 and has 34 floors The building was designed by John Burgee s with Philip Johnson The building receives its name from its shape and color, which resemble a tube of lipstick At three levels, blocks of the building recede as part of Manhattan's zoning regulation in which the building is required to recede within its spatial envelope, to increase the availability of light to street level The result is a form that looks as though it could retract telescopically The shape, which is unusual in comparison to surrounding buildings, uses less space at the base than a regular skyscraper of quadrilateral footprint would use This provides more room for the high numbers of pedestrians who travel via Third Avenue 1986 Main designer, Philip Johnson John Burgee pkrajewski_pl The Lipstick Building is on the east side of Third Avenue at 53rd Street 18

19 Louis Vuitton store East 57th Street 1 New York New York Louis Vuitton's checkered pattern and the grid of that pattern were maintained in the inner layer of laminated glass and on the interior side of the glass respectively However, a checkered pattern with gradations in the transmission of light ranging from opacity to transparency, produced through changes in the dimensions of squares, was overlaid on that pattern From outside, the building as a whole is slightly opaque, but scenes of the interior can be glimpsed in rectangles with blurred edges The exterior finish was applied to a corner of the New York Trust Company Building, a 1930 work designed by Cross & Cross The present design is an attempt to realize, after 70 years, the spirit of the drawings by Hugh Ferriss, especially his vision of a New York skyscraper as a crystalline cluster(text from architects website) Main designer, Jun Aoki Cross & Cross Louis Vuitton pkrajewski_pl Open seven days a week 19

20 41 Cooper Square Cooper Square 41 New York New York Cooper Square, the new academic building for The Cooper Union, aspires to manifest the character, culture and vibrancy of both the 150 year-old institution and of the city in which it was founded The institution remains committed to Peter Cooper's radically optimistic intention to provide an education 'as free as water and air' and has subsequently grown to become a renowned intellectual and cultural centre for the city of New York 41 Cooper Square aspires to reflect the institution's stated goal to create an iconic building, one that reflects its values and aspirations as a center for advanced and innovative education in Art, ure and Engineering (text from architect's website) Public access unknown! 21 IAC Headquarters West 18th Street 555 New York New York IAC/InterActiveCorp Headquarters is a Frank Gehry-designed building located in the Chelsea, Manhattan neighbourhood of New York City Completed in 2007, it houses the offices of IAC corporation Reminiscent of several Gehry designs, it appears at a gross level to consist of two major levels: a large base of twisted tower-sections packed together like the cells of a bee hive, with a second bundle of lesser diameter sitting on top of the first The cell units have the appearance of sails, skinned over the skeleton of the building The overall impression is of two very tall storeys, which belies its actual 10-storey structure Public access unknown! 2007 Gehry Partners IAC pkrajewski_pl 21

22 photo: Nazar Leskiw photo: Nazar Leskiw The Beekman Spruce Street 8 New York New York The Beekman, also known as Beekman Tower a is a 76-storey skyscraper, designed by acclaimed architect Frank Gehry It is located at 8 Spruce Street, just south of City Hall Plaza and the Brooklyn Bridge The Beekman Tower is one of the tallest buildings in New York City Developed by Forest City Ratner, it contains a public elementary school, which the Department of Education owns Above the elementary school there is a 903-unit luxury residential tower clad in stainless steel The building will also include space for New York Downtown Hospital Its structural frame will be all reinforced concrete 2010 Gehry Partners Forest City Ratner pkrajewski_pl photo: Nazar Leskiw 22

23 LVMH Tower East 57th St 19 New York New York Appearing as a traditional skyscraper viewed through a broken glass bottle, the LVMH Tower is one of the skyscrapers that brings the 1990s bulge-and-bend style to New York The building certainly complements its original owner, a Parisian maker of upscale cosmetics, perfumes and luggage Much like a model on a runway, the LVMH Tower stands tall in graceful style while making the dark slabs that surround it look plain and boring by comparison It has been compared to a lily in an alley And like a model, it's more flash than reality The building is only 23 storeys tall, but makes use of its curving lines and gentle setback to create forced perspective and appear much taller This illusion is enhanced by the fact that the building's lot is only 60 feet by 100 feet (text from Public access unknown! 2001 Christian de Portzamparc pkrajewski_pl 23

24 photo: Frankss photo: Frankss NYU Department of Philosophy Washington Place 5 New York New York This project is the complete interior renovation of an 1890 corner building for the consolidation of the NYU's Department of Philosophy within a concept which organizes the new spaces around light and phenomenal properties of materials A new stair shaft below a new skylight joins the 6-level building vertically with a shifting porosity of light and shadow that change seasonally Prismatic film was installed on the south-facing stairwell windows which occasionally break the sunlight into a prismatic rainbow The Ground level, utilized by the entire University, contains a new curvilinear wooden auditorium on a cork floor The upper level floors contain Faculty Offices and Seminar Rooms which are done in different shades and textures of black & white, according to the texts in Ludwig Wittgenstein's book 'Remarks on Colour' The building exists within the NoHo Historic District and is part of the NYU campus within Greenwich Village and is sited on access to Washington Square Park photo: Frankss Project is not public! 26 photo: Andre Staalenhoef photo: Andre Staalenhoef Bayard-Condict Bleecker Street 65 New York New York The Bayard-Condict, 65 Bleeker Street This commercial office building is clad in white terra cotta over a masonry wall The Bayard Building was one of the first steel skeleton frame skyscrapers in New York City and the Department of Buildings raised numerous objections to the design before the plans were finally accepted It is one of the first examples of the Chicago school style of architecture in New York City The division of the building into three sections - an ornamented base, a shaft of identical stacked floors, and a decorated crown illustrates Sullivan's views on skyscraper design At 13 stories and 162 feet (49 meters) high, the building does not attempt to disguise its height, but rather accentuates it by leaving relatively undecorated mullions and pilasters Sullivan's signature ornate floral designs decorate the base and top of the facade, and across the spandrels below the window openings Figural sculptures of angels were added at the request of the client photo: Andre Staalenhoef Public access unknown! 1898 Louis Sullivan yep 26
