photo: Roderick Trompert Prada flagship store Broadway 575 New York New York NY Upon entering the store, which previously housed the SoHo branch of the Guggenheim Museum, visitors are met with a largely vacant space dominated by an oversized, round elevator OMA is said to have spent two months of research "investigating ways to reinvent the retail experience" Perhaps as a result of this, the ground floor only has a small amount of merchandise, relegating the majority of merchandise and actual shopping activity to the basement level, which feels cramped and lacks appropriate lighting The store's main design component is the half pipe-like wooden curve that connects the two floors visually On the Broadway side, the curve has steps and serves as a place for clothes to be shown According to OMA, this portion of the half pipe also serves as place for people to try on shoes, though in reality the shoe department is under the stepped side of the curve, and seating is provided there for shoppers photo: Roderick Trompert 2001, Interior architect OMA - Rem Koolhaas Roderick Prada Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday: 11am-7pm Thursday, Friday, Saturday:11am-8pm Sunday: 12pm-7pm Subway B,D, F, V Broadway-Lafayette St Station 19

photo: Andre Staalenhoef photo: Andre Staalenhoef CBS Building W 52nd Street 51 New York New York The CBS Building in New York City, also known as Black Rock, is the headquarters of CBS Corporation The building, opened in 1965, was designed by Eero Saarinen It is located at 51 West 52nd Street, at the corner of Sixth Avenue (Avenue of the Americas) The 38 story building is 490 feet (150 m) tall and measures approximately 872,000 rentable square feet The interior spaces, as well as the furnishings were designed by Saarinen and Florence Knoll photo: Andre Staalenhoef Public access unknown! 1965 Eero Saarinen yep 32

photo: Andre Staalenhoef photo: Andre Staalenhoef Bayard-Condict Bleecker Street 65 New York New York The Bayard-Condict, 65 Bleeker Street This commercial office building is clad in white terra cotta over a masonry wall The Bayard Building was one of the first steel skeleton frame skyscrapers in New York City and the Department of Buildings raised numerous objections to the design before the plans were finally accepted It is one of the first examples of the Chicago school style of architecture in New York City The division of the building into three sections - an ornamented base, a shaft of identical stacked floors, and a decorated crown illustrates Sullivan's views on skyscraper design At 13 stories and 162 feet (49 meters) high, the building does not attempt to disguise its height, but rather accentuates it by leaving relatively undecorated mullions and pilasters Sullivan's signature ornate floral designs decorate the base and top of the facade, and across the spandrels below the window openings Figural sculptures of angels were added at the request of the client photo: Andre Staalenhoef Public access unknown! 1898 Louis Sullivan yep 33

photo: Andre Staalenhoef photo: Andre Staalenhoef Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts Lincoln Center Plaza 10 New York New York NY ing_arts A consortium of civic leaders and others led by, and under the initiative of John D Rockefeller III, built Lincoln Center as part of the "Lincoln Square Renewal Project" during Robert Moses's program of urban renewal in the 1950s and 1960s Respected architects were contacted to design the major buildings on the site, and over the next thirty years the previously blighted area around Lincoln Center became a new cultural hub photo: Andre Staalenhoef 1962 Urban planner Robert Moses yep 34

photo: Andre Staalenhoef photo: Andre Staalenhoef New York University's Bronx Campus University Avenue New York New York Beginning in the 1950s, NYU began expanding both their downtown and uptown campuses In 1956, the administration hired renowned modernist architect Marcel Breuer, who had experience working with colleges such as Sarah Lawrence and Vassar, to develop a master plan for the future University Heights The architect's avant-garde style differed greatly from the classical design used by Stanford White Instead of using marble, Breuer opted for concrete, instead of ornate fixtures, the Hungarian chose simplicity During the 50s and 60s, observers began criticizing classical works for being simply pretty, but not necessarily functional, making Breuer's aesthetic perfect for the times photo: Andre Staalenhoef 1970 Marcel Breuer yep 35

photo: Andre Staalenhoef photo: Andre Staalenhoef Morse and Ezra Stiles Colleges York Street 304 New Haven Connecticut Eero Saarinen remarked during the construction of Stiles and Morse Colleges that he had embarked "on unchartered waters" in his design In many ways, this is true: The coarse walls of a poured concrete-and-stone mixture with thin strips of vertical windows and the complex's overall massing and layout (there are no right angles) are indeed unique What is most splendid about Stiles and Morse, however, is that despite their idiosyncratic modernity they are nonetheless in harmony with the rest of campus, with two towers that establish strong ties to the nearby Payne Whitney Gymnasium and Hall of Graduate Studies, and a winding alley between the two colleges that at once calls to mind the streets of Italian hill towns such as San Gimignano and the intimate courtyards of James Gamble Rogers's residential colleges of the 1920s 1962 Eero Saarinen yep photo: Andre Staalenhoef 36
