4 photo: Marloes Faber photo: Nazar Leskiw Duca di Milano Hotel Piazza della Repubblica Milan Designed by postmodernist Aldo Rossi, the Duca di Milano Hotel operates as an annex of the Principe di Savoia Hotel, with which it is linked by a skybridge The façade of Rossi's hotel is made up of red brick and has a linear pattern of windows on a plain surface This stands in stark contrast to its mother building, which has a traditional façade with an abundance of ornaments The interior of the Duca di Milano is more confluent with the Principe's style: the units in the annex are ablaze with regal red fabrics, padded walls, valanced windows, sitting areas, and generous desks that match the Edwardian look of the antique dressers Project is public! 1988 Aldo Rossi Marloes_Faber photo: Nazar Leskiw 4

7 photo: Alessandro Calvi Rollino photo: Alessandro Calvi Rollino The White Kite Piazza Comunale Pantigliate This canopy belongs to a private courtyard next to the central town square, and replaces an old structure; the public function of the place, and the client's will to renew were important inputs for the project; the architecture would have to distinguish itself from the surroundings both from a material and a figurative point of view, trying to attract people, providing them protection, and keeping an open aspect The whole load bearing structure is made of tubular steel, while the permanent roof is made of 20mm thick polycarbonate sheets The white striped sheets were chosen because of their characteristics to reduce the absorption of infra-red sunrays, thereby reducing the heat under the canopy, while at the same time providing excellent light transmission; on hot sunny days, they guarantee the best possible thermal comfort; in the summer time, a temporary white-nylon membrane can also be added to the southern part of the structure photo: Alessandro Calvi Rollino Project is public! 9 photo: Miran Kambic photo: Miran Kambic Termalija Zdraviliska cesta Podcetrtek Slovenia Wellness Center Termalija is designed as an extension of the existing poll complex at Terme Olimia in Podcetrtek The extension is placed in a narrow zone alongside the access road which winds around the existing building Since the building, due to its size, significantly stands out in the surrounding of predominantly rural architecture, it is designed in a very reserved manner The building appears almost as a fence that protects the spa complex from a gaze from the road in front of it The roof is planted with greenery and is available for public access The green roof is folded and it seems to naturally continue into the surrounding landscape If the building functions reserved during the day, it shows a completely different face at night when the rural environment is no longer present Illuminated interior then flares up in all the "colours of nature" photo: Miran Kambic Project is public! 11 photo: Miran Kambic photo: Miran Kambic Jurckova housing Jurckova cesta Ljubljana Slovenia Two buildings with fifty residential units are located directly on the Jurckova Street in Ljubljana In accordance with the urban planning regulations, the apartments are arranged in two tracts parallel with the road In order to come closer to the size of the neighbourhood units, each tract is divided into four smaller volumes that are not aligned and which, additionally; also function as completely separate units Basic design element of residential units in the Jurckova Street is prefabricated concrete frame of the window openings A design element that formally unifies separated units again is a direct result of the need to enable more privacy to the residents Applying numerous loggias and window frames on buildings that narrows the space between the two already very close tracts seems fairly confusing at first sight However, closed sides prevent side views between the individual apartment units and, despite even smaller distance between the buildings, provide greater privacy photo: Miran Kambic Project is not public! 12 photo: Miran Kambic photo: Miran Kambic Gruskovje Border Shop Stanosina 1B 2286 Gruskovje Slovenia Gruskovje border shop is situated between two border controls, on the border crossing between Slovenia and Croatia in a narrow space between two roads Simple building with two levels is planned as a longitudinal volume, with the main entrance for visitors placed in one of the smaller sides and the service entrance for deliveries and staff on the opposite side Both entrances are funnel-shaped and are slightly pushed into the interior The two long sides are solid and are, like the roof, wrapped in metal sheets In response to the dynamic environment, and with a simple design technique, the basic volume of the shop is distorted and twisted around the longitudinal axis The resulting appearance is more expressive and is, through much needed greater visibility, serving to facilitate easier spatial orientation of the passers-by Deformation of the volume gives the impression that the building is somehow "frozen" in motion photo: Miran Kambic Project is public! 14 photo: René Rutgers photo: René Rutgers Padre Pio Pilgrimage Church Viale de Padre Pio San Giovanni Rotondo The newly inaugurated church, will serve the large number of pilgrims visiting the place where Saint Padre Pio used to live The materials, selected to express simplicity and solidity, are local stone, wood and glass The immense roof skin is finished in pre-patinated copper with a supporting structure of wood and limestone The supporting structure consists of two intermeshing rows of Apricena stone arches arranged in a circle, a total of 21, that form an inner and an outer The arches of the inner ring originate in the centre of the three-quarter circle, where the altar is located Since the spans of the arches steadily decrease, with the decreasing radius of the circle, a spiral shape is created that is reminiscent of a snail s shell The radial structure brings the assembly as close as possible to the altar The cost of the building, which took 10 years to design and build, has been met entirely by contributions from the faithful [source: arcspacecom] photo: René Rutgers Project is public! 26 photo: Marloes Faber photo: Marloes Faber Pirelli tower Piazza Duca d'aosta Milan In 1950 Alberto Pirelli, the president of the Pirelli Company, required that a skyscraper be built in the original area where the first factory was constructed in the 19th century The project was developed by architect Gio Ponti, with the assistance of Pier Luigi Nervi and Arturo Danusso At 1271 meters (417 feet), it is the tallest building in the city and was built of concrete (est 60,000 tons) Construction of the tower began in 1956 in a time that was experiencing an economic boom The tower was to be surrounded by low lying buildings on a hectagonal plot of land Upon its completion in 1958, it became one of the symbols of Milan and of the national economical recovery The building was later sold to the Lombardy region, of which is now the head office Characterized by a bold, structural skeleton, smooth refined curtain wall façades, and tapered sides like the bow of a ship, it was among the first skyscrapers to abandon the customary block form Project is not public! 27 photo: Andrea Tognon photo: Andrea Tognon Andrea Tognon ure Atelier Via Pericle Milan This is the new atelier space of Andrea Tognon ure in Milan The design approach is a real work in progress First the architects observed the spaces and worked in them before we actually decided any interventions The spaces in the office PALAZZINA were quite banal They started to play with the existing and underlying volumes and spaces only through colour and began from a gray base colour adding different pigments for each room, defining imperceptible sequences of spaces We played with existing neon lights revisiting them just with colour tape to warm up the light and give it emotional value Then we unified different buildings through applying black colour, with which we turned outside spaces to spaces with interior feeling The project is a work in progress, an occasion to experiment with ideas of simplicity but with a strong spatial and emotional impact photo: Andrea Tognon Project is not public! 28 photo: Alberto Piovano photo: Ruy Teixeira D&G Headquarters Via Giuseppe Broggi Milan eghtml The headquarters for the D&G brand, right in the middle of Milan and designed by the Milan architecture studio Piuarch, combines, links and internally reorganizes two factory blocks Synergy between the classic and the contemporary is one of the core features of this design, which sets the early 20th century block with its historic frontage off against the 1960s structure, now new-built in glass This glazed façade is one of the works most characteristic features, running unbroken around three sides of the whole building so as to provide total illumination inside at any time of day and stunning visual impact The link between the two buildings, moderating their different natures with its own rigour, is provided by the new full-height connection with its staircase ramps in unpolished metal plate The ground floor opens internally onto a garden of white pebbles, animated by green islands their curvaceous shapes contrasting with the straight lines of the façade photo: Alberto Piovano Project is not public!
