6 photo: Andreina Schoeberlein photo: Andreina Schoeberlein Novartis Campus Fabrikstrasse 4 CH-4002 Basel Switzerland Novartis is aiming to transform the St Johann site - its headquarters in Basel - from an industrial complex to a place of innovation, knowledge and encounter The new Campus should offer Novartis employees and visitors an environment for intensive levels of communication and work, which is ultra-modern, very functional and aesthetically pleasing The master plan on which all these changes are based is by Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani The individual special buildings are to be designed and also realized by invited architects like Peter Märkli, Diener & Diener and Japanese office SANAA Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani, whom Novartis commissioned to produce an overall plan for the St Johann project, is an architect with a practice in Milan and a chair in urban development history at the ETH in Zurich photo: Andreina Schoeberlein Project is not public! 2000 Urban planner Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani Novartis Schweiz MI_MOA The campus and offices of Novartis are not open to the public, its like a forbidden city for architecture lovers Maybe you could get in with a tour from the Basel ure Museum but don' t count on it you can find the development-map here: downloads/about-novartis/visitorsmappdf The area is situated next to the river, just before (or after) the Dreirosenbrucke Coming from France: Motorway A35/E60 direction Basel, after customs enter left into the tunnel and follow the signs to Basel St Johann From EuroAirport Basel take Airport Express Bus PTT 50 to Kannenfeldplatz Change to Tram 1 (direction Dreirosenbrücke) stop Novartis Campus Across the street you find the main entrance to the Novartis Campus From Bahnhof Basel, also take tram 1, same way 6
7 photo: Alessandro Calvi Rollino photo: Alessandro Calvi Rollino The White Kite Piazza Comunale Pantigliate This canopy belongs to a private courtyard next to the central town square, and replaces an old structure; the public function of the place, and the client's will to renew were important inputs for the project; the architecture would have to distinguish itself from the surroundings both from a material and a figurative point of view, trying to attract people, providing them protection, and keeping an open aspect The whole load bearing structure is made of tubular steel, while the permanent roof is made of 20mm thick polycarbonate sheets The white striped sheets were chosen because of their characteristics to reduce the absorption of infra-red sunrays, thereby reducing the heat under the canopy, while at the same time providing excellent light transmission; on hot sunny days, they guarantee the best possible thermal comfort; in the summer time, a temporary white-nylon membrane can also be added to the southern part of the structure photo: Alessandro Calvi Rollino Project is public! 9 photo: Miran Kambic photo: Miran Kambic Termalija Zdraviliska cesta Podcetrtek Slovenia Wellness Center Termalija is designed as an extension of the existing poll complex at Terme Olimia in Podcetrtek The extension is placed in a narrow zone alongside the access road which winds around the existing building Since the building, due to its size, significantly stands out in the surrounding of predominantly rural architecture, it is designed in a very reserved manner The building appears almost as a fence that protects the spa complex from a gaze from the road in front of it The roof is planted with greenery and is available for public access The green roof is folded and it seems to naturally continue into the surrounding landscape If the building functions reserved during the day, it shows a completely different face at night when the rural environment is no longer present Illuminated interior then flares up in all the "colours of nature" photo: Miran Kambic Project is public! 10 Square Stadsschouwburg Antwerpen Theaterplein Antwerp Belgium Studio Associato Secchi-Vigano () was invited to prepare a draft of the Theater Square and its surroundings The design runs from wall to wall and is characterized by three distinctive features: transparent canopy structure, eliminating the difference in street level between the building of the theatre and thirdly the square with the "modern garden" The canopy structure and the garden provide the uniqueness of the new Theater Square and bring the square back "to scale" and in relation to the built environment With these changes the square obtained it a better and more qualitative and aesthetic appearance The "modern garden" is a more green space, with enough trees and space to linger The lifting of the level between the theater and public space increases the convenience and accessibility photo: Tom Schiphorst Project is public! 2008 Landscape architect Studio Associato Secchi-Viganò Stad Antwerpen tom 24/7 10

13 photo: Cesar San Milan photo: Juan Rodriguez COACAN Aguayos Santander Spain The Ricardo Lorenzo space has marked the starting point to the rehabilitation of the whole neighbourhood in the centre of Santander Zumthor counters how he, in the beginning of a project, meets again and again with the old and almost forgotten memories of determined architectural situations and ask what those situations mean for him and how he can use them in his architecture With this spirit the architects executed the rehabilitation of the old winery in Aguayos street where the enlargement of the architecture school of Cantabria is projected - without forgetting that the correct and sensorial use of materials, which seems deeply rooted in ancestral knowledge of the people, can help us to achieve our objective Providing the conditions that make it suitable to develop the daily work of the school and taking care of the values that remain in the space; transparency, versatility and economy photo: Cesar San Milan Project is public! 2006, Landscape architect Capilla Vallejo Arquitectos mmurianac COACAN 13
14 photo: René Rutgers photo: René Rutgers Padre Pio Pilgrimage Church Viale de Padre Pio San Giovanni Rotondo The newly inaugurated church, will serve the large number of pilgrims visiting the place where Saint Padre Pio used to live The materials, selected to express simplicity and solidity, are local stone, wood and glass The immense roof skin is finished in pre-patinated copper with a supporting structure of wood and limestone The supporting structure consists of two intermeshing rows of Apricena stone arches arranged in a circle, a total of 21, that form an inner and an outer The arches of the inner ring originate in the centre of the three-quarter circle, where the altar is located Since the spans of the arches steadily decrease, with the decreasing radius of the circle, a spiral shape is created that is reminiscent of a snail s shell The radial structure brings the assembly as close as possible to the altar The cost of the building, which took 10 years to design and build, has been met entirely by contributions from the faithful [source: arcspacecom] photo: René Rutgers Project is public! 26 photo: Marloes Faber photo: Marloes Faber Pirelli tower Piazza Duca d'aosta Milan In 1950 Alberto Pirelli, the president of the Pirelli Company, required that a skyscraper be built in the original area where the first factory was constructed in the 19th century The project was developed by architect Gio Ponti, with the assistance of Pier Luigi Nervi and Arturo Danusso At 1271 meters (417 feet), it is the tallest building in the city and was built of concrete (est 60,000 tons) Construction of the tower began in 1956 in a time that was experiencing an economic boom The tower was to be surrounded by low lying buildings on a hectagonal plot of land Upon its completion in 1958, it became one of the symbols of Milan and of the national economical recovery The building was later sold to the Lombardy region, of which is now the head office Characterized by a bold, structural skeleton, smooth refined curtain wall façades, and tapered sides like the bow of a ship, it was among the first skyscrapers to abandon the customary block form Project is not public! 27 photo: Andrea Tognon photo: Andrea Tognon Andrea Tognon ure Atelier Via Pericle Milan This is the new atelier space of Andrea Tognon ure in Milan The design approach is a real work in progress First the architects observed the spaces and worked in them before we actually decided any interventions The spaces in the office PALAZZINA were quite banal They started to play with the existing and underlying volumes and spaces only through colour and began from a gray base colour adding different pigments for each room, defining imperceptible sequences of spaces We played with existing neon lights revisiting them just with colour tape to warm up the light and give it emotional value Then we unified different buildings through applying black colour, with which we turned outside spaces to spaces with interior feeling The project is a work in progress, an occasion to experiment with ideas of simplicity but with a strong spatial and emotional impact photo: Andrea Tognon Project is not public! 28 photo: Alberto Piovano photo: Ruy Teixeira D&G Headquarters Via Giuseppe Broggi Milan eghtml The headquarters for the D&G brand, right in the middle of Milan and designed by the Milan architecture studio Piuarch, combines, links and internally reorganizes two factory blocks Synergy between the classic and the contemporary is one of the core features of this design, which sets the early 20th century block with its historic frontage off against the 1960s structure, now new-built in glass This glazed façade is one of the works most characteristic features, running unbroken around three sides of the whole building so as to provide total illumination inside at any time of day and stunning visual impact The link between the two buildings, moderating their different natures with its own rigour, is provided by the new full-height connection with its staircase ramps in unpolished metal plate The ground floor opens internally onto a garden of white pebbles, animated by green islands their curvaceous shapes contrasting with the straight lines of the façade photo: Alberto Piovano Project is not public! 30 photo: Giuseppe Maritati photo: Giuseppe Maritati Blend Building Piazza IV Novembre Milan The intervention on a 1960's building, is meant to be a clear urban narration of the city, thanks to the reflecting monuments, the multiple contexts and the sky on a façade obtained from the combination of three different glasses (float, mirror, extremely clear) The basement is reinforced by the "piercing" action of a continuous reflecting shelter, emphasizing the dynamic perception of the outline and the external space, whereas the foyer system defines the "threshold" between external-public space and internal-private space A new skin, with a changing geometry, will define the way, that from the foyer leads to the different distribution systems, transforming with its simple "plug-in", space and atmospheres photo: Giuseppe Maritati Project is not public! 39 photo: Maarten Scheurwater photo: Maarten Scheurwater Villa Califfa Lungomare Guglielmo Marconi Santa Marinella Italian architect Luigi Moretti lived and worked in Rome where he built several houses, apartment buildings and urban plans After his graduation in 1930 he advanced rapidly through the Fascist connections he had, designing a gymnasium for Mussolini and a competition entry for the Ministry of External Affairs in the EUR district In his early work he combined rationalism with the monumental architecture of Imperial Rome After World War II he also worked in Milan, and departed form his rigid rectilinear buildings and began to experiment with more organic, curved forms in reinforced concrete It is during this period that he develops such characteristic design elements as his concave cantilevered entry roofs and steam lined string courses, and rhythmic, undulating swells of concrete, one on top of the other This sculptural, free-standing, almost dancing villa is a great example of the later work of this influential Italian Modernist photo: Maarten Scheurwater Project is not public! 40 photo: Miran Kambic photo: Miran Kambic Hotel Sotelia Zdraviliska Cesta 24 SI-3254 Podcetrtek Slovenia Slovenia offers great potential for spa and thermal bath architecture Unfortunately, Hotel Sotelia represents one of the few good examples, while most hotels boast glitz and kitsch Located between two existing hotels, Sotelia clearly distances itself from the built environment and connects, instead, with its natural surroundings Dean Lah & Milan Tomac's primary concern was to avoid an immense building mass, like the one suggested in the client's brief, which would have blocked the last remaining view of the forest And so they broke that unit up into small units arranged in landscape-hugging tiers As a result, the four-storey, 145-room building appears much lower and smaller than this description would suggest Inside the hotel, although the interior does not trumpet 'architect-designed', many elements, like the bamboo-encased columns, were in fact designed by the architects And it is these columns - tree trunks by day and pillars of light by night - that attract the traveller photo: Miran Kambic Project is public! 2006 Enota Terme Olimia Maja_Vardjan 40

43 Torre Orizzontale Largo Metropolitana Rho In open land natural light turns into a material capable of transforming how a landscape is perceived, whether it be natural or man-made In the peculiar setting of a Trade Fair, an horizon where light flow in and is reflected in the whites, greys and patches of colour, it can become a material shimmering from north to south, from east to west, emphasising the deep colour of dawn and dusk The new building is characterised by the colour gold, whose preciousness refers to the theme of sunlight and its reflections, the capacity to create an atmosphere of transparency, opacity, reflections and semi-transparencies with its surroundings, within the territorial perspectives crossing the area at different speeds and at all times of day Project is not public! 44 photo: Miran Kambic photo: Miran Kambic Orhidelia Zdraviliska cesta Podcetrtek Slovenia The main goal while designing the Wellness Orhidelia was to diminish its presence on the surroundings as much as possible Since the program requirements of a wellness center were very extensive, erecting a classically conceived building on the central green section would have occupied the last remaining open area in the thermal complex and largely degraded the spatial quality The new wellness center is consecutively designed, more like a landscape arrangement than a building Folded elevations appear like supporting walls dividing different levels of landscape surfaces As the wellness center is not designed as a classical object, also spatial planning is not confined only to the area within the roads, which was originally intended for construction, but it spans over the entire available space Rather than searching for its own expression and claiming yet more space, the new object integrates the existing buildings and other spatial elements in a whole photo: Miran Kambic Project is public! 45 photo: Miran Kambic photo: Miran Kambic Podcetrtek Sports Hall Zdraviliska cesta Podcetrtek Slovenia The municipal sports hall is located at the main road to small town Podcetrtek Although primarily designed for sports activities, the hall represents also the single large community indoor venue for cultural and other events It is this dual role that lead to the specific design of the facility Its primary design element is a "red carpet" spatially designed path, bounded by the dyke on one side and incised into the building on the other It is benefiting from the spatial anomaly and the dyke, thus shielding the entrance from the direct influence of the road Presented in vivid colours and attractive shapes it widens in front of the entrance to form a quality - almost square like area The festivity of the access is in the evenings highlighted by a light ornament on the façade photo: Miran Kambic Public access unknown!
