(The Blucher house is owned and operated as a Bed and Breakfast by retired interior designer Tracey Love-Smith; treat yourself by staying at this wonderfully appointed home on your next trip to CC, the only thing you will regret is not having the opportunity to experience her banana s foster for breakfast after you leave!) Virginia Roberts Award an award established by the Texas Association Machree Gibson and Representative Vilma For Interior Design (TAID) in honor of Virginia Roberts to recognize Luna outstanding service to the citizens of Texas through promotion of interior design goals that protect the public health, safety and welfare. Virginia was appointed to the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners (TBAE) by Governor George W. Bush to represent citizens with disabilities; she served for five years until her untimely death. Before being appointed to the TBAE board she had served, for 15 years, as Executive Director of the Texas Governor s committee on People with Disabilities. Virginia s pragmatic and dogged approached to her position earned her the respect of the entire TBAE board as it had with the four governors she had previously served under. Gordon Landreth, AIA, and Chair of the TBAE, joined in the presentation of the Virginia Roberts Award by eloquently speaking of his friend Virginia Roberts; thus, giving us a wonderful perspective of this remarkable individual: I had the distinct honor of serving with Virginia from 2000 until her untimely death in the summer of Virginia represented Texas citizens with disabilities Virginia knew what the job of regulating design professionals in Texas was all Donna Vining, FASID, IIDA, RID, CAPS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR TAID Hylander Drive Houston, Texas Phone/Fax Visit our website for additional information cont. on page 4

3 Spotlight on our Board Members Diane Alexander, ASID, RID Licensed Interior Designer NCIDQ Certificate #3597 Alexander & Associates 11201Elbeck, Houston TX My interior design practice consists of space planning, finishing, furnishing, and budgeting of hospitals, medical facilities, wellness centers, fitness centers, elderly housing, and designs for special needs populations. I also teach and have developed programs for a FIDER accredited institution in Houston and have received the honor of Faculty of the Quarter three times. Lately, my professional career has taken me into sustainable design and am now developing a course that will lead to LEEDS certification for the school. I am taking a group of 30 students to the USGBC Green Design Convention in Denver this fall as well as a group to NEOCON in June to further their knowledge on products and sustainable design issues. The desire to teach springs from wanting future designers to benefit from my past mistakes and to share experiences and knowledge. I am totally committed to environmental issues regarding design and in creating safe, uplifting, and creative surroundings. I want to add to the student s education by helping them become aware of the harm they can do, as well as the vast amount of good they can do, with their interiors. You might say I am on a mission. As people age or recover from accidents and illnesses, an interior has the power to help people maintain their independence through thoughtful design or cause them to become dependent on others or even force them to move from their homes. Being involved in such diverse projects as a Children s Quadriplegic Specialty Hospital, Head Injured facility in a Ranch setting, Alzheimer s and Assisted living facilities, Specialty hotels such as the Ronald McDonald House, Holistic Medicine Center, Hospice Care Centers, Kids on the Mend Daycare projects, present challenges and always provide learning and growing experiences. My specialization has allowed me the opportunity to joint venture projects with other interior designers and architects thus constantly expanding my knowledge of how others approach and solve design problems and create beautiful environments. Lately, I have entered the residential field by retrofitting homes for the disabled and elderly and developing an Aging in Place consulting firm. 4 President s Message cont. cont. from page 1 about. She did her homework. She was current on issues both statewide and nationally. Virginia looked at those issues with a fair and balanced approach to life. She weighed the issues thoroughly before casting her vote on each item on our agenda. Virginia asked penetrating questions, and she did not let up on anyone until she got a straight answer, whether the one being questioned was a staff person, a member of the public, or even a fellow board member. In July of 2002, only days after her death, Governor Rick Perry stated, and Diana Walker, Julie Reynolds, Amanda Kendall I quote, As Executive Director of the Texas Governor s Committee on People with Disabilities for 15 years, Virginia Roberts served under four governors: William P. Clements, Mark White, Ann Richards, and George W. Bush. In 1991, with Ms. Roberts leadership, the Committee hosted the largest meeting of the President s Committee on the Employment of People with Disabilities in Dallas. After retirement, Ms. Roberts continued to serve as a state appointee to the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners to further disability access. With that statement the Governor declared July 26, 2002 to be ADA Awareness Day in Texas. Representative Luna is a rare breed in our state legislature. She has demonstrated her concern not just for her immediate constituents, but for the entire state s citizens as she supports the concept of qualified design professional services to all citizens of Texas. This is a win-win deal for us all as the Texas Association for Interior Design recognizes both Virginia Roberts for her service and Representative Vilma Luna for her support of all design professionals in Texas. Chair Landreth s assured comments about Representative Luna were echoed by several of Representative Luna s peers including Representative Jim Pitts; Representative Ruth McClendon; and Speaker of the House Tom Craddick. The involvement, care, and understanding that Representative Luna has shown towards the people of Corpus Christi and all the citizens of Texas in her community activities and legislative efforts demonstrate her leadership. She is the embodiment of the principles that Virginia Roberts lived by. Her focus has unashamedly been children and every aspect that affect their lives. The biggest winners have been the endangered children of this state, whom she has fought tirelessly for, from the beginning of her career, with every aspect of her being. She fully understands that the environment we live in affects all of our faculties and the spirit of our lives. She brings the same pragmatism to issues and understands the field of interior design as well as Virginia Roberts did; thus, it was a pleasure to honor Representative Vilma Luna as the first recipient of the Virginia Roberts Award. Sept. 1, 2003) legislation was passed that said: The design of the seal must be the same as the design used by the board, except that the words "Registered Interior Designer, State of Texas" must be used instead of "Texas Board of Architectural Examiners." The TBAE Board has adopted the following design for use by all professionals. This rule is effective immediately, however the Board has voted to allow you to use your old seal until January 1, 2006, without penalty.
