After thoughtful consideration and the full support from elected board members of AIAS and FBD from the Manhattan Campus of NYIT, I am truly inspired to run for this position. I am excited to answer the call for candidacy. I would like to appear in front the general student body of the AIAS to convince them I am a worthy candidate. Based on my long-term commitment and affinity for my chapter I am ready to step up and make this organization outstanding on a national level. 3 November 22, 2015 To Whom It May Concern, This is a letter of reference and support for Lawrence Pascual who is applying for the position of Vice President of the National AIAS Board of Directors. I am the AIAS NYIT Manhattan Chapter Faculty Advisor and Chair of the Manhattan Architecture Department, and I have known Lawrence since he started at NYIT. He has been a very active member of AIAS since arriving at NYIT, rising through the ranks (senator to treasurer to director) of the AIAS-FBD. These positions have a lot of interaction with the overall NYIT Student Government, and this allows him a great overall understanding of the way the club system works and the affect it can have on student experience at NYIT. He is clearly committed to getting involved in AIAS National Leadership, attending Forum for the last 3 years. In addition, he has worked hard to keep the projects of FBD going; he is in the process of leading the realization of a small building on a Long Island farm this spring, which involves significant fund-raising and coordination of students. 4 1. I started the AIAS because it is a student lead organization base on architecture. As a student fresh out of high school I figured AIAS would a great resource to get involved with making new friends who all share the same interest in architecture. It was my sophomore year when I became actively involved with AIAS as senator, representing the club in front of NYIT s student government association. It was then when I realized that there are active students who want to get involve and improve the general student body. As a student leader there is a high responsibility to uphold by getting students active and involved with extracurricular activities. My best advice to share is teamwork makes the dream work. You are only as powerful as your team. Success is accomplished by working together. I know without my team I will never realize my true potential as a leader. There is no leadership if there is no team to lead and team stands for, Together Everyone Achieves More! 2. Studio Culture is the most important issue to raise. Student should be aware of how large of a role studio culture plays into formal education. All of us experience studio culture in one way or the other as architecture students. As an elected leader it will be one of my mandates to advocate a positive change in studio culture. I would spend most of my time in studio working tirelessly on my projects and other assignments. The studio should be the environment for students to learn, share, and engage with one another. 3. One of the greatest things about AIAS is the diverse range of chapters. The best way to restructure and strengthen local chapters is establishing strong communications. The best way to connect to these students is understanding their studio culture. Studio culture various from chapter to chapter but if we could use studio culture as a standard base line for students, then it should bridge the gap for common ground. A great resource to benefit chapter leaders seeking growth in their chapters is collaborating with the local student government association on campus. Based on my experience as a leader I would collaborate with other student based clubs to create a dynamic force of actively involved students. Collaboration with other local AIAS chapters is just as effective. As students we need to embrace globalization by all working together. 4. AIAS should get involved other design and engineering organizations such as Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. IEEE is another club organizations which often overlap similarities for the advocacy of design programs. From my experience as student leader from my school I was often interested in collaborating events with IEEE. We set up boot camp tutorials helping students learn the basics of programs such as AutoCAD. NYIT s IEEE and AIAS chapter are heavily involved with engaging students to learn the basics of computer programs and 3d printing.
