3 photo: Leonardo Noguez photo: Leonardo Noguez Heidi Weber Museum Höschgasse Zurich The Heidi Weber Museum reflects the harmonic unity of Le Corbusier's architecture, sculptures, paintings, furniture designs and his writings which is unique and possibly the only one such existing structure in the world: a total work of art Located on the wooded shores of Lake Zurich, the last building designed by Le Corbusier, synthesizes Corbusier's genius Yet it marks a radical change of his achievement of using concrete and stone so poetically He to put in practice the construction system based on cubic units of 226 meters each side, created according to the Modulor measures He framed his final masterpiece in steel and glass and thus created a signpost for the future Le Corbusier made great use of prefabricated steel elements together with multi-coloured enamelled plates fitted to the central core, and above the complex he designed a 'free-floating' roof to keep the house protected from both the rain and the sun (text by Arch Leonardo Noguez) photo: Liesa Siegelmann Client Le Corbusier Mrs Heidi Weber JMMM From July to September on Saturdays and Sundays from 2pm to 5 pm for updates take Tram 2 along Seefeld Strasse to Hoeschgasse Walk along Hoeschgasse towards the lake (that's to the right if you're coming from the town center) The pavilion is at the end of the road on the left, within the Zürichhorn park 3

5 photo: Maarten Helle photo: Maarten Helle Stadelhofen Station Stadelhoferstrasse 8001 Zurich Stadelhofen Train Station, built in the early 1980s, is a major transportation junction for the Zurich area The original design consisted of a 300 metres long terminal building, running along a curved railway line, which itself runs along a hillside in the town's centre In 1990, Santiago Calatrava received the assignment to add a new third track to the existing train station In order to accomplish this, his design envolved excavating part of the hillside to add the track, only to restore the hillside in part on top of the new structure This way the new track has an open, naturally lit platform, while above ground space was created for walkways photo: Maarten Helle 1984 Santiago Calatrava HelleBeelden Depending on departure times Swiss Railways operates regional train services through Stadelhofen However, the station is only for regional lines, and is not the main station in Zurich You can reach it from the main station in about minutes by tram (No 11, going south) 5

6 photo: David Baugh photo: David Baugh Forsterstrasse Apartments Forsterstrasse Zurich This project is spread over five levels The lowest is a column-free, underground car park, accessed directly off the street Above this is a partially buried entrance and service floor Finally there are three levels of apartments The lower two levels - 3 & 4 - are handed versions of each other and have two units each, whilst the smaller top floor has only one Internally, the planning is reminiscent of Mies' brick wall houses, with a series of orthogonal perpendicular walls defining individual spaces which flow from one to the next The perimeter of the building is column-free and totally glazed to maximise light and views The floor slabs cantilever out on the Forsterstrasse elevation to help combat solar gain Walls and floors are exposed reinforced concrete, and disguise very clever and subtle methods of load transference As with the Single Wall House, this initially simple building rewards study, and reveals itself to be both spatially and structurally sophisticated photo: David Baugh Project is not public! 2003 Project manager Landscape designer Structural engineer Christian Kerez Archobau Catherine Dumont d'ayot, Lucas Schweingruber, Christian Kerez Oberageri - Joseph Schwartz davidb Take the number 6 tram to Toblerplatz From here walk up the hill (north) and turn left into Freudenbergasse and then turn immediately right into Mittelbergsteig This is impassible to cars and motocycles At the top of Mittelbergsteig turn right onto Forsterstrasse and the project is approximately 40m along on the opposite side of the road 6

7 photo: Roderick Trompert photo: Roderick Trompert Leutschenbach School Saatlenfussweg Zurich The Leutschenbach School (Schulhaus Leutschenbach) is located in the north of Zurich Designed by architect Christian Kerez, aimed to offer a completely new dimension for learning, this building has brought all the function zones under one roof and one next to another: classrooms, meeting rooms, the cafeteria, the music room and even the gym hall To highlight the architectural creation, the gym hall is designed to be on the top floor instead of submerged under the earth The statics of the building is provided by a steel structure and an embedded slab which is supported on only six points These form the foundation for the large gym hall and ensure the building to be completely earthquakes resistant photo: Roderick Trompert Project is not public! 9 photo: Philipp Haefeli photo: Sandro Gaemperle Prime Tower Hardstrasse Zurich Prime Tower Zurich is situated in the heart of the city on the site of the former Maag cogwheel factory, where Zurich has been undergoing a transformation process for several years The octagon-shaped Prime Tower is the project unanimously chosen as the winner of an international competition involving top-ranking architects The decision that came out in favour of the Zurich architect team was influenced among other things by the crystalline exterior that stands apart from its neighbours, the fine movements and projections, the many uses of the large ground plan and the static design with the pre-stressed ceiling Project is not public! 12 KISS Apartment Badenerstrasse Zurich The architecture practice Camenzind Evolution, in close collaboration with the client Swiss Life, have created 46 individual room maisonettes and flats with a unique concept The aim was to develop flats which would go beyond the functionality and offer an ideal added value as well as have their own identity This approach responds to the increasing need of individuality and plurality in our current society Therefore the development of KISS?s design put the future tenant and his personal lifestyle at the centre of its thinking However, the prerequisite for this was an intensive market research study of the area, its infrastructure, its typical employers and their income class This knowledge, together with the Sinus-Milieu Model, helped gathering potential customers of similar lifestyles and perceptions into three specific target groups Evolution Design Nazar 12

13 Parkhaus Opera Schillerstrasse Zurich The parking garage Opéra has been opened as first partial project of an originally three-part plan The teams Zach + Zünd Architekten, Vetsch Nipkow Landschaftsarchitekten, Heyer Kaufmann Bauingenieure and Jurg Altherr Kunstler won the project competition successfully and built the base for the project In 2007, the Opernhaus rejected the other two parts of the project and therefore the parking is not connected to the Opernhaus and stands separately 2012 Zach + Zünd Architekten Nazar 13

14 Hohenbuhlstrasse House Hohenbühlstrasse Zurich Within the historic park of an 19th century villa above the Stadelhofen Train Station, two new residential buildings have been inserted, forming an ensemble with the existing villa Both are apartment blocks with each unit occupying an entire floor, designed with 'empty nesters' as the primary users The buildings are offset from one another for viewing privacy between units The entry courtyard is paved with native granite sheets inserted into sand, leading both to the garage and stair entry halls The apartments are organized as flexible spaces with views in all directions The living room can encompass one or two rooms; alternately a single room can be rented separately and used for guests or a nurse The continuous glazed facade offers an impressive view to the park landscape Residents can vary their degree of privacy with moveable internal wall panels and external metal shade curtains An exterior patio can be opened to the landscape or glass enclosed for use as a winter garden photo: AGPS 2004 AGPS Nazar 14

15 Sihlcity Büttenweg Zurich Sihlcity is a shopping mall located in Zurich which was built on the ground of a former paper mill near the Sihl river in the Wiedikon district and opened on March 22 in 2007 This shopping and entertainment center is the first of its kind in It comprises some 100,000 sq metres of rental space with a diverse range of facilities, such as restaurants, a shopping center, a multiplex cinema, entertainment, health and fitness/wellness area, nightclub, a Four Points hotel and even a chapel 2003 Theo Hotz Nazar 15

16 Residential building Hottingerplatz Hottingerstrasse Zurich The massing of the new Minergy-standard building on Hottingerplatz in Zürich is a precise response to the existing situation The envelope follows the existing building line while adopting the orientation of the neighbouring building at roof parapet level The ground floor is differentiated from the standard upper floors through the choice of materials and the uses it accommodates Generous glazing announces the presence of studio spaces inside The upper floors are more restrained in their relationship to the street, with each of the two-storey maisonettes marked by a single supersized window onto the square The red-stained, exposed concrete core provides visual continuity from floor to floor The levels are interlinked by dynamic, double-height spaces The bush-hammered concrete of the facade provides a lively surface, similar to cement rendering, and enters into a dialogue with other buildings in the neighbourhood 2007 Bob Gysin + Partner BGP Nazar 16

17 Kunsthalle Zurich Limmatstrasse Zurich A white concrete extension flows over the top of a former brewery in Zurich to give Swiss arts organisation the Kunsthalle Zürich its first permanent home Swiss studios Gigon/Guyer s and Atelier WW jointly refurbished the yellow and red brick building in the Löwenbräu arts district, where the Kunsthalle has been located on a temporary basis for the last 16 years alongside the Migros Museum of Contemporary Art and a few other galleries A large new entrance hall connects the existing building with the concrete extension, which contains three gallery floors and a first floor events space with a rooftop terrace 2012 Gigon Guyer Architekten Nazar 17

20 Moussonstrasse apartments Moussonstrasse Zurich The apartment building is located at the transition between the large-scale university district, a context of urban villas from residential area at Zurich The elevated hillside location with views over Zurich gave the idea for special outdoor spaces, which assume different shapes and positions and thus determine the image of the striking building with its concrete facade The facade is heavy and solid, but at the same time open and permeable 2009 Peter Felix Partner Nazar 20

21 Extension Bullingerstrasse Vocational School Bullingerstrasse Zurich Two neighbouring schools designed by Otto Glaus (and partners), Bullinger Vocational School from the 1960s and Hardau Primary School from the 1980s were to be extended The co-existence and interpenetration of essentially very different urban fragments makes the perimeter into an exciting but difficult part of the city that is characterised by strong contrasts The existing building fragments were augmented by employing specific tailor-made measures, their spatial presence is strengthened and they are connected to the new outdoor space The Vocational School, a listed building, is an exposed concrete ensemble somewhat like a monastery It is augmented with building volumes developed out of the logic of the existing fabric and is given a second entrance 2005 EM2N Nazar 21

24 photo: Stefan Müller Freischützgasse House Freischützgasse Zurich Freischützgasse House, the new eight-storey building designed by David Chipperfield s, occupies the north-east corner of the site The narrow front end opens onto the new Europaallee, while its long side extends along Freischützgasse The strict rationality of its floor plan, also reflected in its façade, is softened by the floor-height facade bands which meander in opposing directions The resulting bas-relief effect is further enhanced by printed synthetic mesh with different levels of perforation in the external glass panels The appearance of the building changes depending on the prevailing light and viewing angle In its perception it oscillates between heaviness and lightness, austerity and playfulness, enclosure and openness and in doing so enters into a lively dialogue with its surroundings Project is not public! 25 photo: Stefan Müller Eisgasse House Eisgasse 8004 Zurich Max Dudler's Eisgasse House, situated on the south-west corner of the ensemble, has been conceived as a stone building A cladding of massive cast stone sections conceals the window frames, thereby making only two materials visible in the façade: dark green cast stone and glass Through the addition of local alpine stone of variegated grain (white marble, black basalt, alpe verde), the dressed stone façade shows a diversity of detail and depth depending on the viewing distance This gives the impression that the regularly-spaced façade openings have been cut sharply from a monolithic mass, thereby lending the building an imposing gravitas photo: Stefan Müller Project is not public! 26 photo: Roger Frei Extension Herdern Railway Service Facility Industriequartier Hard Zurich The new maintenance facility being built at Zurich-Herdern will allow SBB (Swiss Federal Railways) to handle future trains of up to 400 metres in length with ease SBB will be able to clean and repair entire intercity train compositions without disassembling them, since the entire train can enter the facility Through its central position next to the rapidly developing new neighborhood of Zurich- West and by virtue of its sheer size, the new building aquires great urbanistic significance It shapes the edge of the city towards the great emptiness of the railway tracks and greets visitors entering the city by train, signaling that they have arrived close to the city center photo: Roger Frei Project is not public!
