1 Singapore Institute of Architects enewsletter 08/2014 RECENT EVENTS ACA-16 and 35th ARCASIA Council Meeting ARCASIA 16th Asian Congress of Architects and 35th Council Meeting was held from 23 to 29 June 2014 in Kuala Lumpur. President Theodore Chan, Honorary Secretary Chan Kok Way, Immediate Past President Ashvinkumar, Council Member Lim Choon Keang and Past President Rita Soh represented SIA at the event. Some of the highlights of the event include the handing over the ARCASIA Presidency to President Elect Ar. Sathirut Nui Tanndanard from Association of Siamese Architects and the announcement of ARCASIA Award winners. The next ARCASIA event will be the ARCASIA Forum 2015 in Ayutthaya, Thailand. ARCASIA Award for Architecture The ARCASIA Awards for Architecture, is aimed at acknowledging exemplary work done by architects working in Asia. In so doing, it encourages the sustenance of the Asia spirit, the development and improvement of the Asian built environment and enhancement of the awareness of the role of architecture and architects in the socio-economic and cultural life of Asian countries. The results for the ARCASIA Award for Architecture 2014 were announced at the Awards Presentation and Celebration Dinner on 26 June 2014 in conjunction with ARCASIA Asia Congress of Architects (ACA16). 2 enewsletter NUS Architecture City Exhibition 2014 Friday, 27 June NUS City Exhibition, annual showcase of engaging design schemes from NUS Architecture School, was officiated by Dr Cheong Koon Hean, CEO HDB on 27 June 2014 at the URA Centre. The exhibition was open to public from 28 June to 25 July SIA-CEFPI MOU SIGNING Tuesday 29 July SIA and CEFPI Singapore Chapter signed a memorandum of understanding at the SIA-CEFPI Seminar on Future Schools on 29 July 2014 at Singapore Polytechnic. With the signing of the MOU, the 2 organisations agree to: 1. Cooperate in events related to the design and development of educational facilities. 2. Recognize CEFPI as an Allied Professional Organisation with regard to CPD accreditation and the fee charged for attending each other s events that relate to the design and development of educational facilities. Have reciprocal arrangements in having representatives sit in the respective committees as Advisors or Observers in so far that the committees deal with matters that relate to the design and development of educational facilities. 4. Promote each other s events that relate to the design and development of educational facilities in appropriate media. SIA and CEFPI would like to express our appreciation to CEFPI Australasia President Mr Mark Trotter for delivering the keynote speech and Singapore Polytechnic School of Architecture & the Built Environment for sponsoring the venue for the event. HAPPENINGS Building An Institution: The SIA Premises SIA Premises Commemorative Book The SIA Premises at Neil Road will be expanding to better serve your needs. We are pleased to announce that renovation works for the premises will began in August 2014! To date, we have received S$270, in donations, and we thank you for your unwavering support for our Institute! In order to cover renovation costs, we still need to achieve S$2.3 million. SIA will be publishing a Commemorative Book on the SIA Premises, authored by our own SIA Member. This book will document the following items (non-exhaustive): 1. SIA where we ve come, where we ll go 2. history of our Premises at Neil Road 3. the milestones achieved within these Premises 4. the various ideas by our own Architects for the expansion competition 5. the winning competition entry 6. thoughts and ideas for the future of our SIA Premises 7. member firm profiles Page 3

Taking place at various venues across Singapore, this annual festival celebrates the urban environment and the communities that make it come alive. It is a platform for local and regional communities of creative individuals, thinkers and enthusiasts of the built environment to engage each other and the public in imagining a city of the future. The festival hopes to breed a vibrant design culture, and consequently a design conscious society, by encouraging and guiding the general public and professionals in various creative fields to engage in conversations about our city in a fun and free atmosphere. This year, the Institute takes on the role of the Festival Director and Co-curator, and appointed PLUS Collaboratives as the Co-curator and Event Producer for Archifest Archifest 2014 will be the 8th cycle of the festival and will be held from 26 September to 11 October Themed CROWD, it will build upon the six pillars of the festival: Pavilion (Archifest Opening Launch on 26 September evening, MBS Event Plaza), Conference (29 September, MBS Convention Centre), Architours (Saturdays and Sundays from 27 September to 11 October), ArchXpo (29 September to 1 October, MBS Convention Centre) Urban Lab, and Fringe events, and will see greater collaboration with various institutions and communities for an even more exciting programme lineup. 6 Theme CROWD Crowd will be a festival about people. It is also about process the process of bringing together great minds and resources to create better places for everyone. Crowd carries different meanings in different contexts. Collective Intelligence How individuals, connected or unconnected, can collaborate and make incremental changes, and how incremental changes can produce great impacts. Community Capital How people, connected by the place they shared, leverage on social capital to build better places for everybody. Archifest Pavilion 26 September 2014 (Opening Party, 6.30pm, Marina Bay Sands Event Plaza, by invitation only) 27 September to 11 October 2014, 10am to 6pm, Marina Bay Sands Event Plaza (Open to Public) The Archifest Pavilion Design Competition is in its third year, which is intended to not only be the key venue of the festival. Physically embodying the spirit of the festival, the Archifest Pavilion functions as the main base of operations where the various events start from or run within the space. It is a place where ideas can be discussed, shared and learnt during the festival. Opening up as a competition to architects, the Archifest Pavilion is to be an architectural experiment to explore different ideas to redefine and innovate the spatial experience of a public space within Singapore s context. Specific to this year s theme of Crowd, the pavilion centralises around the idea of people and their ability to empower change within the city. Emphasis of the design would be on the idea of an architectural experiment of how the pavilion is flexible enough to accommodate people and different activities both spatially and programmatically. 7 Studying and gaining a sense of understanding of architecture in Singapore are the key goals of Architours. One of the tour series will be specially curated for the delegates of the World Architecture Festival (WAF) which will be held during the Archifest period. ArchXpo September to 1 October 2014, Marina Bay Sands, Hall D & E Co-organised by SIA and Conference & Exhibition Management Services Pte Ltd (CEMS), ArchXpo 2014, the International Exhibition for Architecture & the Built Environment is the latest addition to the key pillars of the Archifest series. ArchXpo 2014 will be the key showcase of relevant technologies, products and related services in the architectural and built environment industries. It will also be a key gathering of industry experts and talents that makes for excellent architectural and built environment design, as well as an invaluable platform for the exchange of research and innovation in architectural design, practice and education. It will also be held in conjunction with the International Facility Management Expo 2014 and LED+Light Asia 2014, making it a comprehensive and integrated platform for all building needs under one roof! Through Archifest 2014, we aspire to bring forth a discourse on how people or crowd affect the way architecture and cities are designed; and how can we harness its potential to create a sustainable urban environment. SIA Architectural Design Awards 2012 Selected Works Organised by Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA), the SIA Architectural Design Awards is the most prestigious award conferred by SIA to promote and encourage excellence in architectural design in Singapore. 8 In its 12th cycle, SIA Architectural Design Awards 2012 received 112 competition entries from 53 architectural firms. A total of 10 Design Awards and 12 Honourable Mentions was awarded in 6 categories. Anonymous submissions for Stage One of the competition are due September 10, Read more: Upcoming Events Great Asian Street Symposium (GASS) Conference 2014 The Great Asian Street Symposium (GASS) was initiated in 2001 at the Department of Architecture, School of Design and Environment, National University of Singapore (NUS). In response to the long-standing and dire lack of truly Asian perspectives in the literature and research of Asian cities, GASS aimed to establish an Asian-rooted centre of excellence to foster, both regionally and internationally, exchange and communication of ideas and studies within this field. Over the past decade, GASS has successfully shared and integrated cutting-edge debates and discussions on many problems and challenges that confront Asian cities and their public spaces, such as traffic congestion, air pollution, social segregation, environmental degradation, and slum proliferation.
