3 The Fetherling History The Fetherling is rich in history. Built in the early 1900 s, by the Hurt family, it originally served as a farmhouse. Over the years, the property has been expanded and has seen many uses. Historically, Lake and McHenry counties were rife with mob activity. During the Prohibition years, the property was rumored to store illegal Canadian Whiskey, making its way down to the speakeasies and private clubs in Chicago. For a time in the early 1900 s the Lake Forest Armour family used it as a retreat and hunting lodge. As the years passed, it was also used as a school, but not for traditional teachings, but rather for schooling on tax evasion. It then changed hands to a Swedish company specializing in kidney dialysis and research and for the past 30 years it was used as the world headquarters for a printing press automation controls business. The Fetherling s stately presence and tudor architecture have been a cornerstone in the Lake Barrington landscape for nearly a century. With its four centered arch and split timber construction, it takes you back to years gone by. It is time for the next chapter in the Fetherling s history.
