1 Jseph Redfern ( Nv 1844 Belfast) Brther f surgen William Redfern N recrds f Jseph knwn befre It s assumed that Jseph lived in Prtugal between abut 1800 and His father was in Prt, Prtugal in 1803 and 1805, Jseph was nted as a fluent speaker f Prtuguese in an 1810 Dublin newspaper, Jseph s wife was Prtuguese, and his daughter Anna was brn in Prtugal abut Many free Irish sught refuge in Prtugal during the Irish Rebellin. The Belfast News-Letter reprted in very late 1808 that the last British had left Prtugal and had in arrived Belfast. The Peninsular War started N Redferns in 1800/1807/1808 Belfast business directries. AMELIA REDFERN was either brn r baptized (it's nt clear which) 14 Nvember 1809 at St Patrick's in Belfast. Similar ads cntinued weekly in varius Belfast newspapers up until JR s death. Bank Buildings at 1 Castle St extant in Saunders News-Letter (Dublin) 27 Aug 1810: "Thursday, August 22. This day the curt prceeded t the trial f Anthny Sylva, a Prtuguese, Jseph Mrris, and Jaquin Ferandere, Spaniards, accused f the murder f Rbert Mrrisn [stabbed with a dagger], in this twn n Easter Saturday last...mr. Jseph Redfern, f Belfast, saddler, was swrn was an interpreter...the jury returned a verdict acquitting Mrris and Ferandere, and finding Sylva Guilty. He was sentenced t be executed at Carrickfergus, n Saturday next. Dublin Evening Pst 30 Aug 1810: Antni de Silva was executed at Carrickfergus n Saturday. Silva was asked by Mr. Redfern, interpreter, did he kill Mrrisn, he answered "calling t Gd his witness, he did nt." He was 28 years f age, and left behind him in Prtugal a wife and tw children. The Irishman 17 Sep 1819: JR is selling gunpwder at his saddlery. Gunpwder is fr pistls, rifles and shtguns. This is the nly knwn ad specifically fr gunpwder. He frequently sld military supplies fr infantry and cavalry. 25 Apr 1820 Belfast Newsletter: Died. On the 3 rd f last mnth at Trwbridge, Wilts. Mr. Thmas Redfern, Surgen a very skillful intelligent yung man, nephew t Mr. Jseph Redfern f this twn. The Irishman 4 Jul 1823: JR is imprting medical trusses (fr hernia) and can supply surgens and druggists at the whlesale prices universally recmmended by Medical Gentlemen. This is the nly time JR specifically advertised medical prducts. March 1821 PRONI D3688/F/24: Letter frm William Brwn, Belfast, t his brther James, 73 Chesnut Street, Philadelphia. Thanks James fr telling him f the return t Belfast f their brther Samuel, but infrms him f Samuel's death during the jurney and family disagreements ver his pssessins. The letter then relates news abut the family in Belfast and refers t several business cncerns in the twn. Mentin is then made f family friends wh had emigrated t America. "I had a letter frm William Thmpsn. Archibald is ff t Clumbus t lk ut fr land. William and his sister remain in Washingtn all winter. The directin I have in care f Jseph Thmpsn, bricklayer, near the War Office, City [f] Washingtn. I think it strange they did nt write t yu accrding t prmise. They were all well and had a gd passage... Mr Redfern wuld be bliged t yu if yu culd find his brther. He is a saddler and frmerly lived 43 High Street. Rbert is his name. If yu culd find him I wuld thank yu t call n him and see what he is abut and send me wrd." Dr. Redfern here alluded t, is we understand, the brther f Mr. Redfern, saddler in Belfast. Dublin Mrning Register 20 Oct 1827: The agent f Dr Redfern, effected sales last week f that gentleman s sheep and cattle, t the amunt f 25,000l Dctr Redfern frmerly held the situatin f magistrate in NSW and was fficially cnnected with the medical department f that State. In resigning bth situatins, he received the strngest mark f the regard and esteem f Gvernr Macquarie, expressed in a prclamatin in the Gvernment Gazette. He is brther t Mr Js. Redfern, f Belfast. The general peace f the twn, hwever, was interrupted. Quebec Gazette 28 Sep 1843: "Jseph Redfern f Ireland" appinted Justice f the Peace fr the district f Quebec. Belfast News-Letter, 19 Nv 1844: Died n the 11 th inst. at his huse, Arthur-square, in this twn, Jseph Redfern Esq. aged 60 years. Vindicatr, 13 Nv 1844: At his huse, Arthur-square, in this twn, n Mnday mrning, Jseph Redfern Esq. aged 60 years. Mr. Redfern was a warm hearted and patritic Irishman, and in early life was frced t leave his cuntry fr sme time n accunt f his plitical pinins. During his absence he married a Prtuguese lady [daughter als brn Prtugal], and sn after returned t Belfast, where he cntinued t reside at the head f a lucrative branch f trade, until his death. Will was in Public Recrd Office f NI, but destryed in 1922 fire. Vindicatr 7 Dec 1844: late JR, saddle and harnesses being auctined n premises in Arthur-Square. Vindicatr 18 Dec 1844: Jseph Redfern, late f Belfast executrs Eliz. C. F. Redfern [wife] and Anna Green [eldest daughter].
