Follow the instructions to sign a housing contract. Your contract date determines the order in which you select your room in the spring. Once you ve signed a contract, you also may submit additional materials to apply for a scholarship hall. Scholarship halls involve a competitive selection based on academic merit, financial need, and commitment to the cooperative philosophy and diverse community. There is no fee to submit a contract, but cancellation fees will apply. November 1 Student Housing begins an early review of scholarship hall applications. The last week of each month, selected residents are offered a place in the scholarship hall system. Offers continue throughout spring. 3 February Returning residents select rooms in advance of incoming students. March Scholarship Halls Scholarship hall application initial deadline is March 1. If you don t receive a fall offer you can be considered in spring. March Residence Halls New residents begin selecting rooms and roommates online. You may choose roommates or go potluck. If you have preferred roommates, all must sign housing contracts before selecting the room. High School Juniors In August, before your senior year in high school, visit housing.ku.edu. Begin making decisions about room type and rate. Plan to sign your contract as soon as you re admitted. That puts you among the first to choose a room in the spring. 1

SUPPORTS FOR YOUR ACADEMIC SUCCESS Academic advisors, writing centers, and supplemental instruction are available where you live. Housing staff are among those who teach University 101. This two-credit seminar is an important foundation for academic success. Learning communities allow students to live and learn with others who share academic interests: firstyear.ku.edu/communities. 5 ACADEMIC SUCCESS GRADES On-campus residents get individual support and make better grades than other students What do students get? Help from staff with one-on-one academic planning and time management. RAs conduct check-ins with residents throughout the semester to help residents reach their goals. Roommate agreements establish expectations for living together. Activities that provide social connections and cultural competencies in a diverse, inclusive community. Research shows that students who live on campus at KU graduate in four years at a higher rate than students who live off campus. Support On-campus students participate in Student Housing s residential curriculum, which is directly linked to KU s academic mission. By living in the halls, students learn academic success skills and personal success strategies through a variety of passive and active opportunities. Topics include conflict management, good decision-making about drugs and alcohol, personal growth and self-advocacy. In addition, the residential curriculum provides information about living in a diverse community and engaged civility at KU. The curriculum uses personalized interventions to help residents succeed. For example: Housing staff contacts residents who regularly skip classes or fail to enroll for the next term. In surveys, residents say they feel cared for and have a social support network provided by student housing staff. Study areas are in every hall. Classrooms in which students receive supplemental instruction are featured in Daisy Hill Commons, Oliver, GSP and Templin residence halls. 3

This project will include renovation of the main lobby, all student rooms, restrooms, and other public spaces. Mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems will be replaced. 25 DINING SERVICES EAT Students tell us that many college memories are made during mealtimes in their dining centers Great food is never far away visit any of our 19 campus locations. Residence hall students live near three all-you-care-to-eat dining centers (Mrs. E s at Lewis Hall, North College Café in GSP Hall, and the new South Commons dining center) featuring a variety of choices. All dining locations offer a wide variety, including vegan and vegetarian options. NetNutrition, our online nutrition analysis tool, is available at kudining.com. KU dining also features The Studio, located in Hashinger Hall. Across campus, students will find: Four retail cafes. 27 12 SCHOLARSHIP HALLS SCHOL HALLS Live in the heart of the KU campus, and pay a lower housing rate in this academic community. You d be a great fit for a scholarship hall if: You re looking for creative ways to fund your college living expenses. You re a first-generation college student and diversity, collaboration, and a small community are important. You would welcome student success meetings to plan your academic program with graduate student mentors. An outside scholarship is not required to live here. The scholarship is two-fold: Admittance is scholastically competitive and the lower rate in exchange for cooking or cleaning duties is a means of reducing college costs. 31 ON-CAMPUS APARTMENTS INDEPENDENCE After your first year, stay on campus in an apartment for privacy, convenience and location As a returning resident, you ll have first choice of three apartment complexes operated by KU Student Housing the new 708-bed Stouffer Place, Jayhawker Towers near Daisy Hill, or McCarthy Hall. You could be among the first residents to choose the brand-new Stouffer Place Apartments available in The new apartments will have private bedrooms with private bathrooms, dishwasher and washer-dryer in each unit. The three apartment complexes all have on-site professional staff, wireless internet, utilities included in your rate, laundry facility and optional dining plans. Jayhawker Towers, in KU s Central District, is popular with returning residents, who are first in line to choose them. 29
