2 1. Housing Information This is a handbook to introduce housing opportunities for exchange students at AGU. Please read the following information carefully and decide where you wish to stay while you are at AGU as an exchange student Dormitories Below are dormitories operated by private companies, which International Exchange Center (IEC) introduces to exchange students. Male Dormitory on page 3 See 4.Female Dormitory on page 5 Application Instruction If you wish to apply for a dormitory, please fill out the Application and Contract form and send it to us with other application materials by the deadline. Please note that the number of available rooms is limited, and the submission of the application does not guarantee the room reservation. You will be notified whether you can be placed in the dormitory or not, within two months after the application deadline. If the dormitory room is not available, we might suggest other options (other dormitory or different types of accommodation). In addition, male students who apply for the dormitory should consult us if they have important food restriction for health or religious reasons. Food restrictions are difficult to be accommodated with the dormitory meals. We recommend students with such restrictions to consider accommodations where they can cook their own meals. Check-in Date Check-in is available between 9am and 5pm from the dorm opening date. You may not be able to check in except the opening hours or earlier than the opening date since dorm rooms will not be ready by then Guest Houses, Apartments and Homestay AGU does not make arrangements for any guest house, apartment / room share or homestay. If you prefer these types of accommodation, you may arrange it on your own. Please refer to 5. Guest House/ Apartment /Homestay on page 7-8 for useful websites. 1

Important information (Both Male and Female dormitory) Important Notice: There is a minimum length of stay at this dormitory and you are asked to stay more than 4 or 5 months depending on your study period in Japan. Please refer to the information below: Study period Minimum stay Spring semester Fall semester 1 semester 4 months April to July October to January 2 semesters (1year) 5 months April to August October to February *Please note that September is not included in the minimum contract period if you move into the dorm from Fall semester since September is not a full month contract. Cancellation Policy If you wish to cancel the reservation or leave the dormitory before the contract term ends, you must inform IEC office and submit a specific document 60 days before you wish to leave. You must inform IEC office by submitting a form before the date you wish to move in or out as shown below. If you cancel or leave the dormitory without prior notice, you will be required to pay for the 2 months dorm fees calculated from the day you have given the notice (daily rate applied). Because of regulation about the minimum length of stay, you have to pay the dorm fees for the minimum length of stay (4 months or 5 months) even if you wish to leave the dormitory within that period. *Please note that payment during summer or spring vacation period is required for those who wish to continue staying at the dorm for the following semester. 3. Male Dormitory Tokyo Student-House Tsutsujigaoka Tokyo Student-House Tsutsujigaoka is a private dormitory operated by Itochu Urban Community Co. Ltd.

4 3. Male Dormitory Tokyo Student-House Tsutsujigaoka Tokyo Student-House Tsutsujigaoka is a private dormitory operated by Itochu Urban Community Co. Ltd., but AGU has a special contract with the company in order to reserve rooms for AGU exchange students. This dormitory gives opportunities for exchange students and Japanese students from other schools to communicate each other. There is also a Resident Assistant (an AGU student) who lives in the dormitory to support the students. There are staffs of Itochu Urban Community to ensure the security and general maintenance at the front desk (Mon-Sat 10:00-18:00, Sun/National holidays 9:00-17:00). Dinner and Breakfast will be served except for Sundays and national holidays. Public bath 24 hours available, but not available during cleaning time(10:30-13:00). *1 st and 3 rd Monday are not available, but only shower is available. *There are no private shower rooms. It cannot be paid monthly, weekly or daily. * Although the room fee is usually calculated by month (not by the number of weeks or days), the following months can be calculated by weeks: -September fee for students from Fall semester -August fee for students leaving after Spring semester -February & March fee for students leaving after Fall semester 4

6 4. Female Dormitory Ikebukuro Female Dormitory Ikebukuro Female Dormitory is a private dormitory operated by Itochu Urban Community Co. Ltd., but AGU has a special contract with the company in order to reserve rooms for AGU exchange students. This dormitory gives opportunities for exchange students and Japanese students from other schools to live together and support each other. There is also two Resident Assistants (AGU students) who lives in the dormitory to support the students. Each single room has its own kitchen facility (the dormitory has no meal service) as well as Unit-type bathroom/toilet, ensuring complete privacy and safety for the residents. It is located at about 4 minutes walking distance from Ikebukuro station, which is very convenient for commuting to Aoyama campus, and is well known for a number of shopping and entertainment venues. Guest House/ Apartment/ Home Stay If you wish to arrange your own accommodation such as private apartment, guest house or home stay, you need to find it by yourself Guest House There are many guest houses for foreigners who stay in Japan for a long time. Contract You will have to pay following contract fee when you make a contract for a renting apartment etc. Key money (reikin ): this is for the landlord ( ōya ): one or two months rent Agent s fee (tesūryō): this is for the agent: one month rent Refundable deposit (shikikin) : two or three months rent One month rent in advance (yachin): Guarantor (Rentai-hoshonin) In order to sign a contract for an apartment in Japan, you will be requested to have a guarantor (rentai-hoshonin) who has the same liability for any losses or damage to the apartment as you do. If you do not know anyone in Japan or have no close Japanese friends who can assume this role, IEC at AGU can be the one for AGU exchange students. In order to apply for this, you should apply for International Student Housing General Compensation Plan (Ryugakusei Jutaku Sogo Hosho) via IEC and pay 4,000 yen a year to Japan Educational Exchanges and Services (JEES) as insurance. This is a comprehensive renter s insurance for foreign students in Japan and it protects both the tenant and guarantor against loss of apartment due to covered risk, such as fire.
