3 Westgarten Zanderstrasse Frankfurt The L-shaped, up to seven floors high apartment house connects the spectacular singular buildings of the former Westhafen (Western harbour) to the northern Gutleutviertel It also combines attractive housing at the river with the infrastructure for an entire developing city quarter The site that is completely built-up at groundfloor level houses, a supermarket as well as three smaller shops On the roof of the supermarket there is a green common space where the tenants of the first upper floor have private gardens Four well-lit and generous staircases that are accessible from the street lead to the all in all 70 apartments on the upper floors The high-quality, elaborately profiled clinker façade with generous window panes, wooden windows and deep loggias follows the tradition of classic upper middle class apartment- and commercial buildings 2005 Max Baum Immobilien GmbH AdrianEwig 3

4 photo: Rodney Cudmore photo: Rodney Cudmore MyZeil Shopping Mall Zeil Frankfurt The project's structure was inspired by a fluid form connecting the Zeil, an important shopping street, to the Thurn and Taxis palace (a building re-built in a historical style) People never stay on the ground floor of the structure: upon entering the building, they find a series of fluid paths easing circulation A sequence of voids lets the natural light into the interior spaces, making it pleasant to stop over The facade running along the Zeil embodies a sense of leisure time, entertainment and relaxation The other side is where the entrances to the hotel and offices are located The hotel lobby, reconstructed inside the Thurn und Taxis, is set near the art gallery and the most upmarket shops in the mall The rooms can be reached by lifts, while the conference centre and sports facilities are set on the third and fourth floors A glass-and-steel translucent skin envelops and deforms the entire building Project is public! 5 Campo Heidestrasse Frankfurt Following the example of Mediterranean urban spaces, on this inner-city brownfield, the former tramway depot Heidestrasse, evolved a new urban quarter Integrating two listed buildings and an apartment house from around 1900, high-quality multi-storey housing has been created It combines housing, shopping, and gastronomy The new buildings follow the typologies of the existing quarter They integrate into the urban context by their materiality (clinker-cladded base, light-coloured plaster-facade) and by their scale The buildings are separately readable While the balconies open towards the green and calm courtyard, the apartments open towards the urban space with their loggias The depot, converted into a supermarket, with its filigrane steel construction and the also listed frame house stand in enthralling contrast to the the cubic new buildings 2009 ABG Frankfurt Holding AdrianEwig 5

9 Hansaallee Westend Hansaallee Frankfurt The housing estate Hansaallee, located at the interface between Westend and the new university campus, replaces a residential area from the postwar period Along Hansaallee, four apartment blocks have been developed by different architects Three point blocks in the inner courtyard complete the ensemble All houses have the passive house-standard The six-floor U-shaped block faces Hansaallee with its long side The house reinterprets the typology of the tenement outside the city 2010 ABG Frankfurt Holding AdrianEwig 9

10 Town villas on the Mühlberg Auf dem Mühölberg 30a-f Frankfurt As a result of a procedure for calling in expert opinion, Stefan Forster s were selected to plan six exclusive villas on the Mühlberg in Frankfurt Sachsenhausen for the Hamburger house-building association Frank Heimbau Situated in a monumental protected park near to the city centre, it is one of Frankfurts most prestigious areas, offering fabulous panoramic views over the city skyline and the forest The projects consists of a staggered arrangement of two and three-storied cubes elevated in grey brick - reminiscent of Mies van der Rohes 'Lange house' and 'Esthers house' on the lower Rhein Generous windows with slim profiles and high ceiling along witch low balustrades and parquet flooring complete the high-quality interior of the spacious flats Associate architect APB: Architekten Hamburg Frank Heimbau Stefan_Forster_Architekten train station: Lockalbahnhof 10

11 photo: Marco De Trizio photo: Marco De Trizio Commerzbank Tower Kaiserstrasse Frankfurt The Commerzbank Tower in Frankfurt, designed by Sir Norman Foster and completed in May 1997, was the tallest building in Europe until it was surpassed by the Triumph-Palace in Moscow Unlike most high-rise office buildings, it receives natural daylight and ventilation, has an atrium reaching from the ground to the top floor, and each office enjoys an unobstructed view to the outside It therefore successfully reconciles seemingly inreconcilable requirements: optimal use of space, a humane working environment, environmental soundness, technological innovation, and architectural quality The building shows what possibilites there are for the high-rise in the dense inner-city (text from website Crowstep) Foster & Partners Marco_De_Trizio photo: Marco De Trizio 11

13 Voltastraße Housing Voltastraße Frankfurt This housing complex on the Voltastrasse in Frankfurt am Main is the result of a competition held in the autumn of 2001 It reminds of large Viennese residential yards The powerful clinker brick façade of the U-shaped block contrasts with its filigree railings The architecture deliberately makes associations to the factory architecture of the environment, dating from the beginning of the twentieth century and gradually disappearing in this area A few - but clearly defined - advances, regressions and deep roof cuts give a restrained plasticity to the housing block Not only regarding appearance, but also in user friendliness the structure tries to set an example The fifteen dwellings per staircase and three rental units per floor provide for clear size and flexibility Floor area/size m² ABG Holding Frankfurt Stefan_Forster_Architekten 13

15 residential tower Lyonerstraße Lyonerstraße Frankfurt The Lyoner Quarter in Frankfurt Niederrad is to be transformed The first plans for the restructuring of this existing office area shall provide a range of new attractive living spaces This pilot project for the restructuring of the Lyoner quarter sees the reorganisation of an existing derelict office tower into a block of flats by Dreyer Vierte Verwaltungsgesellschaft mbh proposed to redesign and modify an unused 14-storied office building at 19 Lyoner Street into a 17-storied residential tower The floors between 1 to 17 of the building are designated for living use, the ground floor is to commercial units, with a single-storey underground parking garage In June 2010 ninety-eight accommodation units and a commercial unit shall be offered onto the market with a combined floor area 6900 sqm The accommodation unit consists of two and three-room apartments which shall be partially furnished to a high standard Dreyer Vierte Verwaltungsgesellschaft mbh Stefan_Forster_Architekten 15

16 photo: RAU photo: RAU Hess Natur Marie-Curie-Str Butzbach Hess Natur is a German mail order company, specialized in healthy clothing made from environmentally responsible materials Their new shop in Butzbach, near Frankfurt fits this vision perfectly The interior is built up around a large clay wall, where the energy and climate control takes place The surrounding façade, with wooden lamellas and glazing is divided into several differently shaped squares They appear as stacked boxes, and from the inside out, the façade works like a cabinet By colouring the glass the façade is given a diverse and changing image, and at the same time these glass panels ward off the sun photo: RAU Project is public! 18 photo: Guilherme Lassance photo: Guilherme Lassance Haus Schminke Kirschallee 1b Löbau In 1930, Hans Scharoun designed the house for Fritz Schminke who was the owner of a noodles' factory in Loebau, Saxony, and who wished for " a modern house for two parents, four children and one or two occasional guests " The realization was both at the same time, fancy and functionally adequate A curved main body, terraces, outside stairs and numerous round, porthole shaped windows inspire the connotation to a steamship Rooms merge flowingly; generous grasslands involve the garden as an extension of living space as well Beside span and lucency, manifold design elements form the spatial experience Developed especially for the house, their colors and shapes set outstanding courses In contrast, utility rooms - including a Frankfurt kitchen - and the sleeping area remain sparse by intention and include easy to clean surfaces and space-saving built-in closets Herta Hammerbacher designed the garden as a dynamic connection between architecture and landscape photo: Guilherme Lassance Project is public!
