2 NYCxDESIGN IS NEW YORK CITY S OFFICIAL CELEBRATION OF DESIGN, FASHIONED BY SOME OF THE CITY S MOST RENOWNED DESIGNERS, ARTISTS, EDUCATORS, RETAILERS, MANUFACTURERS, ENTREPRENEURS, CURATORS, EDUCATORS, AND EDITORS. NYCxDESIGN incorporates over a dozen design disciplines and is recognized as one of the leading celebrations of global design. Every year, NYCxDESIGN brings together culture, education, commerce, and entertainment for a schedule that includes exhibitions, installations, trade shows, talks, launches, open studios, and more. 2 3 Managed by New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) and helped by a steering committee of leaders from New York City s design industries, schools, and museums, NYCxDESIGN was launched in 2013 in collaboration with the New York City Council to showcase the city s incredible design talent and the best of design from around the globe.

6 PRESS EVENT OPENING 10 NYCxDESIGN 2017 began on Wednesday, May 3 at Brooklyn Bridge Park with the unveiling of Anish Kapoor s installation, Descension. The piece was part of the Public Art Fund s fortieth anniversary season, and the opening attracted an array of design influencers and press. Event speakers included Anish Kapoor; Alicia Glen, Deputy Mayor for Housing and Economic Development; Cindy Allen, Editor-in-Chief, Interior Design magazine; Nicholas Baume, Public Art Fund Director and Chief Curator; Eric Landau, President of Brooklyn Bridge Park; and Edward Hogikyan, Chief Marketing Officer of NYCEDC. 11

7 DESIGN PAVILION TIMES SQUARE Building on the success of the 2016 installation at Astor Place, the significantly larger 2017 Design Pavilion took to the greatest stage of all: Times Square Working alongside the Times Square Alliance, the Design Pavilion engaged tens of thousands of visitors from May Installations took over three plazas across Times Square and featured a dedicated NYCxDESIGN information kiosk that assisted guests for the duration of the celebration. The Design Pavilion hosted interactive pieces from DuPont Corian, ergoergo, Herman Miller, Hub Culture, Kayn e, Brooklyn Solarworks, and many more. It even featured a design market with products from Kikkerland, American Design Club, and Pratt Institute.

8 NYCxDESIGN AWARDS For the second year in a row, Interior Design magazine and ICFF teamed up to produce the NYCxDESIGN Awards, a global design competition celebrating outstanding achievement across major areas of design. Award categories covered everything from architecture and interiors to furnishings, and included items that personify New York City. Thirty design luminaries from around the world reviewed the submissions, and the honorees were celebrated in a ceremony at MoMA in front of a crowd of over four hundred attendees. New to this year s awards was a student category, sponsored by NYCxDESIGN, which received over one hundred submissions. 9 RADO: OFFICIAL WATCH SPONSOR Rado, a design-oriented watch brand from Switzerland, returned as the Official Watch Sponsor of NYCxDESIGN for 2017 and hosted their second annual Rado Star Prize U.S. awards. Rado partnered with WantedDesign and created an installation that highlighted the Rado Star Prize U.S. finalists. The installation was located at WantedDesign Manhattan and drew thousands of attendees over the course of the competition Elisia Langdon, a student from Pratt Institute who submitted her Kera storage product to the contest, was announced the winner during a VIP reception at the WantedDesign Manhattan launch event. Both NYCxDESIGN and WantedDesign promoted Rado and the Rado Star Prize U.S. through digital and print advertising, marketing, and social media. Rado received dedicated bus shelters and newsstands to promote their brand and product line and was highlighted through outdoor advertising.

10 NYCxDESIGN GOES SHOPPING NYCxDESIGN has seen continuous growth in retailer engagement and participation every year Highlights from NYCxDESIGN 2017 include special events in SoHo, Tribeca, South Street Seaport, the NOMAD Design District, as well as shops on Howard Street that hosted block parties with over a thousand design enthusiasts in attendance. Museum shops also joined in with special offers and events while larger shopping centers including Brookfield Place featured special installations. At the end of the celebration, the NYCxDESIGN 2017 closing party took over the South Street Seaport in coordination with two new design shop openings by WantedDesign.

11 DESIGN SCHOOL SHOWCASES New York City is home to many of the top design schools in the world. Several of these schools including Pratt Institute, School of Visual Arts (SVA), The Cooper Union, FIT, NYU, Columbia University, and more participated in NYCxDESIGN 2017 by hosting events, lectures, and design showcases Schools also collaborated with larger design shows, such as BKLYN DESIGNS, WantedDesign, ICFF, and the Design Pavilion, to showcase the work of young, up-and-coming design talent for the world to see. For the first time at NYCxDESIGN, Pratt Institute, Parsons School of Design, SVA, and FIT collaborated on a best-of design showcase, which featured projects and presentations from graduating seniors.

12 MUSEUMS & CULTURAL INSTITUTIONS More museums and cultural institutions participated in NYCxDESIGN 2017 than ever before. Many hosted related programming, had special promotions, and sponsored design-focused exhibitions during the celebration Participating museums included MoMA; the Museum of Arts and Design; Museum at FIT; Museum of Jewish Heritage; Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum; Museum of the City of New York; Staten Island Museum; Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden; Brooklyn Historical Society; Socrates Sculpture Park; and National Jazz Museum in Harlem.

13 THE OFFICIAL GUIDE TO NYCxDESIGN Metropolis magazine published The Official Guide to NYCxDESIGN for the second year in a row. Over 77,000 were printed and distributed to seventythree locations across the five boroughs, including to universities, cultural institutions, design centers, hotels, trade shows, targeted bus routes, design showrooms, and retail outlets. The digital version of the guide was also available on the Metropolis magazine website, allowing everyone to access event information The guide was packaged with the May issue of Metropolis magazine and sent to their subscriber base of 50,000 a 13 percent increase in domestic and international distribution from The guide features 105 pages of editorial content and 240 percent more event coverage than the previous year.

14 COMMUNICATIONS & PRESS NYCxDESIGN 2017 generated the strongest global coverage to date. The NYCxDESIGN press plan focused on increasing engagement with the design press and public relations community, as well as establishing a steady drumbeat of messaging. October 5, 2016: NYCxDESIGN 2017 dates announced, putting the program on the global design calendar October 27, 2016: Leaders from the design public relations community were invited to the Museum of Arts and Design for an NYCxDESIGN 2017 press preview and a discussion on how they and their clients could get involved January 17, 2017: Over 150 people attended an NYCxDESIGN 2017 press event at MoMA for a presentation on highlights of the upcoming celebration May 3, 2017: NYCxDESIGN 2017 begins at a press event with Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen at Brooklyn Bridge Park, coinciding with the Public Art Fund s unveiling of Anish Kapoor s Descension

15 PRINT MEDIA NYCxDESIGN 2017 saw a much larger advertising campaign than previous years. Ads could be found in premier design publications, including T: The New York Times Style Magazine, IFDM, New York Magazine, Interior Design, and Metropolis. For the second straight year, NYCxDESIGN was featured in a four-page spread in New York magazine s annual Art & Design issue, as well as a postcard packaged with the early May 2017 issue. 17 NYCxDESIGN s social media presence continued to grow through Instagram, by far its most popular channel, grew by nearly 20,000 followers over the course of the celebration. Regular Instagram takeovers by design institutions, shows, schools, brands, and other design weeks allowed NYCxDESIGN to increase its audience engagement throughout the year.
