5 photo: Kris Leenders photo: Kris Leenders Cityscape Gulden-Vlieslaan Brussels Quartier Louise, once Brussels' luxury district, lost a lot of its reputation over the last decades An association was founded to revitalise the neighbourhood A 5000 sqm wasteland site was put at the disposal of Belgian artist Arne Quinze (aka art director, furniture designer, interior decorator, creator of atmospheres) to bring life to the disconsolate district It took him 33 wooden stilts, 60 km of beams and nails to perform his task The result is a giant wooden sculpture, 40 m long, 25 m wide, 18 m high, described by the artist himself as "the capture of one moment in a form that is in full development" It is meant as an invitation to contemplation in this otherwise hectic neighbourhood, with the heavy traffic on the adjacent ring way But above all it attracts local residents, passers-by, visitors and tourists, chatting, playing, lounging in the ever-changing patterns of light and shade In a year from now, all the used wood will be fully recycled photo: Kris Leenders Artist Arne Quinze Brussels Louise vzw Kris_Leenders open 24/7 for the duration of one year from September 2007 onwards from Brussels South Station (Brussel Zuid/Bruxelles Midi), take the metro line 2 (direction Simonis), get off at Louiza/Louise 5

6 photo: Marc Belderbos photo: Marc Belderbos Klavertjevier extension Groendreef Brussels The 'Klavertjevier' (four-leaf clover) Primary School was ready for extension s Marc Belderbos and Marc vande Perre of AAC architectes have added 12 new classrooms, a gymnasium, a room where the children rest and a caretaker's lodge, as well as providing a proper entrance hall and a canopy to partially cover the playground There is a break where the old and the new parts meet The architects have turned it into a fold and the resulting corner in turn determined the new floor plan in which the classrooms are arranged like alcoves No two are the same size and no corner between any two classroom walls forms a right angle The logic of the floor plan and the building has been enlarged into lines in concrete and brick For instance, the staircase on the west side of the building has been turned into a sculptural element The bricks and concrete form work slope upwards, while the rainwater on top of the glazed roof runs downwards, creating a small waterfall flowing into a pool photo: Marc Belderbos Public access unknown! 2005 AAC architectes City of Brussels Lars_Kwakkenbos 6

13 Concert Hall Het Zand Bruges Being the cultural capital of Europe in 2002 was an ideal opportunity for Bruges to proof that it evolves in time despite its historical, preserved character With this glorious year in sight, some architectural fireworks were realised in the centre Paul Robbrecht and Hilde Daem were commissioned for the construction of the hypermodern Concertgebouw (concerthall), after winning a design competition in 1999 The design criteria for the concert building related to openness and adventure, innovation and a modern image but also to safety and functionality The result is a sometimes surprising and creative ode to Bruges and the city's dreams The building has an overall size of 120 metres by 50 metres An eye-catching feature is the so-called 'Lantern Tower', which is slightly separate from the main volume and is 28 metres and eight storeys high and overlooks the Zand In this tower is a chamber music hall with seats for 300 photo: Adrian Law 2002 Robbrecht en Daem en City of Bruges MI_MOA Daily from 10 am to 6 pm and Thursdays to 8 pm In the evening, the box office opens one hour before the performance Closed on 25 December and 1 January The Concertgebouw is 10 minutes walking from the station Cross the station square and the main road and turn left onto the path through the Albert Park You can also take the bus from the station towards the city centre (bus numbers 1, 3, 4, 6, 9, 11, 13, 14, 16 and 23) and get off at the stop next to the Concertgebouw 13

14 photo: Serge Brison photo: Conix s Umicore Adolf Greinerstraat 2660 Hoboken The company plant of Umicore is a city in itself but lacks structural cohesion and coherence Conix s developed a strategy which creates a new and more accessible identity for the company The strengths and weaknesses of the terrain were determined Based on this, Conix s drew up a master plan Multiple spatial changes are made: adding a compact tower building with offices, screens, green areas, billboards, signage and route descriptions and the renovation of a number of important industrial buildings The new office building is the eye-catcher, encapsulating and generating the company s new identity It is unrestrained in design in contrast to the monotonous and randomly selected surroundings The design draws one s attention, in an emotional response, counter to the existing rational background The powerful look and feel creates an innovative image, thus modernizing the company Umicore is ready to face the 21st century as a dynamic and innovating company photo: Serge Brison Project is not public! 17 Square Stadsschouwburg Antwerpen Theaterplein Antwerp Studio Associato Secchi-Vigano (Milan, Italy) was invited to prepare a draft of the Theater Square and its surroundings The design runs from wall to wall and is characterized by three distinctive features: transparent canopy structure, eliminating the difference in street level between the building of the theatre and thirdly the square with the "modern garden" The canopy structure and the garden provide the uniqueness of the new Theater Square and bring the square back "to scale" and in relation to the built environment With these changes the square obtained it a better and more qualitative and aesthetic appearance The "modern garden" is a more green space, with enough trees and space to linger The lifting of the level between the theater and public space increases the convenience and accessibility photo: Tom Schiphorst 2008 Landscape architect Studio Associato Secchi-Viganò Stad Antwerpen tom 24/7 17

20 photo: Serge Brison photo: Serge Brison Hoopnatie Timmerwerfstraat 2000 Antwerp The area of this project looked chaotic because it lacked design unity Due to the existing relationship between a number of large buildings, the perspective had already been determined by and large Conix s felt compelled to put an end to this mish-mash of building styles Their final organization of the buildings lies between urban compacting and spatial perception The project comprises three buildings The triangular space between the three buildings is turned into a private courtyard Conix s used lines more or less everywhere to unite the designs of these buildings and thus create a unique and recognizable character for the entire complex Façades were interrupted in places to make incidences of light and air possible Because of this design choice, the surrounding streets has become more airy and spacious, in contrast to the enclosed and massive surrounded buildings photo: Serge Brison Project is not public! 21 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Kaan Ozdurak Liège-Guillemins Railway Station Rue Jonckeu 4000 Liège This railway station was opened in 2008 and replaced a post-war building from the 1950's One reviewer described the building as a railway cathedral - and it is true The building seems to be a modern interpretation of the classic stations built during the industrial revolution Calatrava's dome has equal grandeur and similar dimensions (200m long, 35m high) The extensive use of white makes the station look not only more chicque than its 19th century predecessors; it gives the structure an airy, light-weight and almost delicate appearance Apart from its structure, one of the most surprising aspects is the station's nearly-complete openness towards the city centre Where most other stations know a clear division between inside and outside, this station extends the public square right into its heart photo: Dirk Verwoerd Santiago Calatrava kaan 24/7 By train from Maastricht, Brussels or Aachen 21
