3 photo: stadsarchief Antwerpen / Tony Gonzalez photo: Robbrecht en Daem Sint-FelixPakhuis Oude Leeuwenrui Antwerp The Antwerp City Archives moved to the monumental 1859 warehouse Sint-FelixPakhuis, completely restored and renovated by Robbrecht en Daem (based in Gent, ) together with Grontmij Vlaanderen They renovated the whole interior in such a way the internal structure of the building hardly changed and every intervention can be undone On the ground floor are public functions like library and entrance The next 4 floors are occupied with archives, kept in 18 separate concrete containers to provide optimum atmosphere and fire-prevention The attic is completely refurbished and renewed to make fit for a new reading hall, meeting rooms and conference halls The whole roof had to be replaced by a new wooden roof, appended with 3 glass atriums for more daylight These glass boxes are seen from the nearby dock, the Willemdok The concept of wood was subsequently used throughout the interior, for walls, floors and furniture All furniture was custom made, designed by Robbrecht en Daem photo: stadsarchief Antwerpen / Tony Gonzalez Project is public! 4 photo: Hans Werlemann / 51N4E photo: 51N4E Groeningemuseum Dijver 12 B-8000 Bruges This museum offers a rich and fascinating array of (primarily) Belgian artworks The refurbishment is not merely focused on the creation of a new interior It is an in-depth inquiry on the museum s capacity as a public interior within the city layout The future of the Groeningemuseum could be two-fold: it could act as a museum and it could perform as a cocoon-like public domain Hence 51N4E space producers proposed maximizing these 2 aspects: creating an expo route and a public route The combination makes up the new Groeningemuseum -a unique chance to provide the exquisite collection (6 centuries of art, starting with Flemish Primitives) with a new spatial arrangement An array of different settings offers difference in experience, room after room Apart from the art, each room is designed with specific lighting, flooring (glass mosaic tiles/luscious carpets) and furniture (individual seats/massive tribunes) In N4E won the Dutch Maaskantprijs for young architects photo: Hans Werlemann / 51N4E Project is public! 7 Concert Hall Het Zand Bruges Being the cultural capital of Europe in 2002 was an ideal opportunity for Bruges to proof that it evolves in time despite its historical, preserved character With this glorious year in sight, some architectural fireworks were realised in the centre Paul Robbrecht and Hilde Daem were commissioned for the construction of the hypermodern Concertgebouw (concerthall), after winning a design competition in 1999 The design criteria for the concert building related to openness and adventure, innovation and a modern image but also to safety and functionality The result is a sometimes surprising and creative ode to Bruges and the city's dreams The building has an overall size of 120 metres by 50 metres An eye-catching feature is the so-called 'Lantern Tower', which is slightly separate from the main volume and is 28 metres and eight storeys high and overlooks the Zand In this tower is a chamber music hall with seats for 300 photo: Adrian Law Project is public! 2002 Robbrecht en Daem en City of Bruges MI_MOA Daily from 10 am to 6 pm and Thursdays to 8 pm In the evening, the box office opens one hour before the performance Closed on 25 December and 1 January The Concertgebouw is 10 minutes walking from the station Cross the station square and the main road and turn left onto the path through the Albert Park You can also take the bus from the station towards the city centre (bus numbers 1, 3, 4, 6, 9, 11, 13, 14, 16 and 23) and get off at the stop next to the Concertgebouw 7

8 photo: Jan Kempenaers photo: Jan Kempenaers Atlas Building Carnotstraat Antwerp The Atlas building accommodates several departments for the administration of the city of Antwerp such as cultural integration, language offices and a material rent-out There are open plan offices and individual offices, a large reception space and an exhibition space at the ground floor The renovated concrete structure and a new building form a courtyard that connects to the public exposition space The deep construction of the ground and first floor is compensated by a glazed atrium that connects the floors visually and physically The atrium allows natural light at the reception desk and also helps visitors orientate themselves after they enter the building A system of concrete columns and slabs, with a core containing circulation and sanitation, forms the structure of the building The generality of the open plan and the repetitive openings make it possible for the program to change in the future Project is not public! 9 photo: Toon Grobet photo: Toon Grobet De Natie Gijzelaarsstraat Antwerp This building's boundary lies within an historical inner courtyard The project attempts -through its façades and its connection with the inner courtyard- to fit effortlessly within this significant part of Antwerp The façade's structure, the system of openings, the use of limited materials and a sensitivity to its setting within the courtyard all integrate the project into its context At the same time every floor gets its own large sun terrace The shell construction was conceived in such a way that it could also function as a finished state This strategy saves material and time and results in a more economical building, at the same time enhancing flexibility and sustainability Whilst the building suites the current tenant's needs perfectly, it offers a wide range of possibilities for later generations photo: Toon Grobet Project is not public! 11 photo: João Sousa photo: João Sousa Toyo Ito Pavilion Burg 8000 Bruges The old city of Brugge was designated Cultural Capital of Europe 2002 As a symbol of the encounter between historical culture and contemporary culture in the context of town planning that strives for coexistence of history with the future, Toyo Ito's pavilion was constructed in the Brugge city center As though suspended above a shallow circle of water in the ruins of the Roman-influenced cathedral, this eloquent pavilion abundant in contemporary sensibility has over time blended into the history of Brugge and now exerts a presence as one face of that city The pavilion was originally conceived as a single-year project for Brugge's term as Cultural Capital of Europe during 2002, but as large numbers of its citizens called for it to last beyond this time, it was decided to preserve the pavilion into the future photo: João Sousa Project is public! 2002 Toyo Ito Joao_Sousa 11

12 photo: José Manuel Alorda photo: José Manuel Alorda MAS Nieuwpoortkaai 2000 Antwerp The MAS (Museum aan de Stroom) is located on an island (het Eilandje) in the heart of the old harbour close to the city centre It will house 3 different collections (the Volkskundemuseum, the National Maritime museum and partly Het Vleeshuis) The new museum was a winning design of an open architecture competition, a 60m high tower with stacked exhibition spaces, in total 10 storeys Each level is twisted 90 degrees to form a giant spiral This glazed space becomes a vertical galleria Elevators guide the visitors to the top of the building in a journey through the history of Antwerp and through the panoramas of the city On the upper floor a restaurant, a conference room and a sky deck are situated Square, docks and tower are designed to form one continuous space for exhibitions and events The stacked concept refers to the old warehouses where goods were packed and stacked Now Antwerp's history, traditions, artefacts, stories and objects are stacked in one new warehouse photo: Dirk Verwoerd Project is public! 13 Square Stadsschouwburg Antwerpen Theaterplein Antwerp Studio Associato Secchi-Vigano (Milan, Italy) was invited to prepare a draft of the Theater Square and its surroundings The design runs from wall to wall and is characterized by three distinctive features: transparent canopy structure, eliminating the difference in street level between the building of the theatre and thirdly the square with the "modern garden" The canopy structure and the garden provide the uniqueness of the new Theater Square and bring the square back "to scale" and in relation to the built environment With these changes the square obtained it a better and more qualitative and aesthetic appearance The "modern garden" is a more green space, with enough trees and space to linger The lifting of the level between the theater and public space increases the convenience and accessibility photo: Tom Schiphorst Project is public! 2008 Landscape architect Studio Associato Secchi-Viganò Stad Antwerpen tom 24/7 13

15 photo: Serge Brison photo: Serge Brison Hoopnatie Timmerwerfstraat 2000 Antwerp The area of this project looked chaotic because it lacked design unity Due to the existing relationship between a number of large buildings, the perspective had already been determined by and large Conix s felt compelled to put an end to this mish-mash of building styles Their final organization of the buildings lies between urban compacting and spatial perception The project comprises three buildings The triangular space between the three buildings is turned into a private courtyard Conix s used lines more or less everywhere to unite the designs of these buildings and thus create a unique and recognizable character for the entire complex Façades were interrupted in places to make incidences of light and air possible Because of this design choice, the surrounding streets has become more airy and spacious, in contrast to the enclosed and massive surrounded buildings photo: Serge Brison Project is not public! 16 photo: 4M - KV House Renovation Genthof Bruges An old abandoned house was transformed into a private house for a family, together with a Bed & Breakfast The symmetrical window is replaced by a strict facade composition The sobriety of materials and proportions announce a contemporary home The facade remains historically intertwined with the adjoining property The Corten steel cladding guide you along a wheelchair slope extrapolated from the footpath to the front Once inside, the light flows in from all sides and is further reinforced by the dominant white color The main building's ground floor furnished as a meeting between residents and visitors (s) The upper floor is completely dedicated to two children's rooms with a mezzanine The back house has two guest rooms with all modern comforts photo: 4M - KV Project is not public! 19 photo: Frankss photo: Frankss Europacollege Verversdijk Bruges ersdijk The College of Europe is a post doc university institute of European studies, located in two campuses: Bruges and Natolin (Poland) This expansion with two new buildings for the Faculty of economics and law has been added to an old school campus The architect designed a geometrical volume, finished with a stone grid In that building, two auditoriums, a foyer for the students and the IT department are located The white uniform grid of polished façade of prefabricated panels determines the image of the expansion and provides a sophisticated interplay between old and new The polished concrete panels were made from white cement and white marble Norwegian granules Public access unknown! 20 photo: Jeroen Meijer photo: Jeroen Meijer Maison Guiette Populierenlaan 32 Antwerp Guiette House designed by Le Corbusier's in 1926 is considered one of his most unknown works It's an early and classic example of the "International Style" and built in 1927 as the residence and studio of the painter René Guiette The building has a cellar, ground floor, first and second floor, and a roof terrace on the third floor (at the back) The large window on the top of the front facade is from the studio of the painter It was once inhabited by Belgian fashion designer Ann Demeulemeester who supposedly despised architecture tourists gazing at her house, although she had restored the house in 1985 by Georges Baines and built an extension next to it Project is not public! 1927 Le Corbusier Réné Guiette jpmm photo: José Manuel Alorda Pre-metro/tram: There is a stop nearby called "Antwerpen Olympiade" Just a small walk away Car: in the southern suburbs of the city, 100 metres from the motorway A

21 photo: Bram Goots photo: Bram Goots London Tower Londenstraat Antwerp The London Tower is the northern pendant of the south-gate formed by the new Law Court, it marks the beginning of the 'Leien' This landmark was created in a well-considered way The result is a building which volumetrically integrates itself on the 'Leien' and restores the original street line A raw dark-grey stone is the main material used for the façade and is brought to life by the carried pattern of window openings The structure and materials of these elements evoke the image of water drops and link the building to the nearby harbour The verticality of the tower is emphasized by the sculptural excision between the tower and the lower volume of the adjacent office building The London Tower is a contemporary example of a high-rise building and illustrates the qualities of urban density The project engages in a dialogue with the local urban landscape on an architectural and urban level and at the same time, it creates a new strong visual identity for the skyline of Antwerp photo: Bram Goots Project is not public! 22 photo: Allard de Goeij photo: Allard de Goeij Transformation WDT-hangar Damplein 1 B-2060 Antwerp Within the context of the 'Open Call' competition, the design for the re-allocation of the historically valuable WDT-trainhangar into event hall, offices, local sports hall and new sportshall, was elected laureate The building (12785 m2) is situated in the new park 'spoor noord', designed by Sechi & Vigano Thanks to the well-considered equilibrium between the historical covering of the existing buildings and a new transparent volume sliding into the existing walls, the building acquires the desired élan of a landmark At night, the building is transformed into an enormous lamp, a glowing element in the landscape photo: Allard de Goeij Project is public! 23 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Dirk Verwoerd Port Building Brouwersvliet Antwerp The Port Building was with his 8-storey tower a striking but not an attractive element in the Antwerp skyline Partly because of this and because of the special place on the new axis from the core city to the Island and the MAS, SD Worx and the designer opted for this drab office to form it into an interesting landmark The existing tower was renovated with a new double skin First, a high performance glazing applied over the entire height of the building, then horizontal blades, mounted in steel frames shelter the building from excessive heat or glare from the sun A second element, the addition of a new volume, completes the profile of the street This new section was given a striking new façade The pronounced copper cladding, contrasts with the industrial character of the tower It supports the idea of 'landmark' but at the same time fits into the cityscape Instead of large window openings narrow strips are cut, so the 'monolithic' nature of the new volume is preserved photo: Dirk Verwoerd Floor area/size m² Main designer, Interior architect Supplier Stramien Kris van de Poel Colt SD Worx dirkverwoerd 23

24 photo: CSM photo: CSM Antwerp Theatre Square Theaterplein 2000 Antwerp At one time or another, we all pay a visit to an open air market Since the redevelopment of Antwerp's theatre-square market, it has been possible to shop there even on a rainy day The square has been provided with a colossal free-standing steel canopy, more than 20m in height and with a surface area of ca 70 x 70m Despite the powerful overall visual impression it makes, a careful look at the canopy will reveal that it is comprised of relatively simple steel components Another immediately apparent element of the square are the fire escape stairs of the Municipal Theatre Following hot-dip galvanisation, the stairs were assembled on the ground floor, and the handrails in turn attached Then, the entire stairs 'measuring 12m in length) were hoisted and attached to the canopy construction Almost 1000 tonnes of steel were employed in realising the project photo: CSM Project is public! 25 photo: Karin Borghouts photo: KAAN en Royal Museum of Fine Arts Leopold de Waelplaats Antwerp wwwkmskabe The Royal Museum of Fine Arts is part of the 19th Century expansion of Antwerp's city center The first design of the building was embedding high ceilings and wide spaces, but during the following century the museum has undergone many uncoordinated changes: courtyards were covered, windows were closed, new walls added and the evident logic of routing was disrupted The new project aims to revert this condition via three main functional areas: a public block; the museum and its depot; staff and guests rooms The extension will restore the original routing and integrate the exhibition space with its six courtyards to generate a new "vertical museum" The interiors have a succession of colors, from the gray-yellow layer of the through the golden-brown (of the) characteristic colour of the Rubens and van Dyck rooms and all the way to the old Pompeian red of the staircase photo: Luuk Kramer Project is public!
