2 photo: Kris Leenders photo: Kris Leenders Cityscape Gulden-Vlieslaan Brussels Quartier Louise, once Brussels' luxury district, lost a lot of its reputation over the last decades An association was founded to revitalise the neighbourhood A 5000 sqm wasteland site was put at the disposal of Belgian artist Arne Quinze (aka art director, furniture designer, interior decorator, creator of atmospheres) to bring life to the disconsolate district It took him 33 wooden stilts, 60 km of beams and nails to perform his task The result is a giant wooden sculpture, 40 m long, 25 m wide, 18 m high, described by the artist himself as "the capture of one moment in a form that is in full development" It is meant as an invitation to contemplation in this otherwise hectic neighbourhood, with the heavy traffic on the adjacent ring way But above all it attracts local residents, passers-by, visitors and tourists, chatting, playing, lounging in the ever-changing patterns of light and shade In a year from now, all the used wood will be fully recycled photo: Kris Leenders Artist Arne Quinze Brussels Louise vzw Kris_Leenders open 24/7 for the duration of one year from September 2007 onwards from Brussels South Station (Brussel Zuid/Bruxelles Midi), take the metro line 2 (direction Simonis), get off at Louiza/Louise 2

3 photo: Marc Belderbos photo: Marc Belderbos Klavertjevier extension Groendreef Brussels The 'Klavertjevier' (four-leaf clover) Primary School was ready for extension s Marc Belderbos and Marc vande Perre of AAC have added 12 new classrooms, a gymnasium, a room where the children rest and a caretaker's lodge, as well as providing a proper entrance hall and a canopy to partially cover the playground There is a break where the old and the new parts meet The architects have turned it into a fold and the resulting corner in turn determined the new floor plan in which the classrooms are arranged like alcoves No two are the same size and no corner between any two classroom walls forms a right angle The logic of the floor plan and the building has been enlarged into lines in concrete and brick For instance, the staircase on the west side of the building has been turned into a sculptural element The bricks and concrete form work slope upwards, while the rainwater on top of the glazed roof runs downwards, creating a small waterfall flowing into a pool photo: Marc Belderbos Public access unknown! 2005 AAC City of Brussels Lars_Kwakkenbos 3

5 photo: Hans Brinker photo: Hans Brinker Lopez de Heredia Winery Avda Vizcaya Haro Spain This is a jewel-like pavilion sheltered by a canopy for a wine shop and tasting room It was first built as a stand at a food fair in Barcelona and afterwards relocated to the bodegas at Haro in Rioja (Basque country) This winery makes remarkable, unusually old-fashioned wines The pavilion, like a series of nested Russian dolls, in turn shelters the winery s elaborately carved mahogany and oak display stand that was made for the 1910 Brussels Worlds Fair This family-run business, now in its 4th generation, sticks to the winemaking methods for fermentation and aging established by Rafael López de Heredia, who founded it in 1877 No stainless-steel vats or computer-run temperature controls can be found here The pavilion is a surprising addition to the winery s already iconoclastic campus See their website for a virtual tour over the premises photo: Hans Brinker Floor area/size m² Zaha Hadid s R Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia, SA hansbrinker Call or to make an appointment to visit the winery: +39 (0) or bodega[at]lopezdeherediacom 5

6 photo: HJ Imhoff photo: Nazar Leskiw Atomium Atomium square 1 B-1020 Brussels The Atomium is a modern monument in the Heizelpark in Brussels Designed by the engineer André Waterkeyn for the International Exhibition of Brussels, that took place here in 1958, the Atomium is a steel structure that is half way between sculpture and architecture It exists out of nine large spheres, each with a diameter of 18 meters They are arranged in the configuration of a central cubic system and form an iron of cristal, magnified 165 billion times Made entirely of steel clad with aluminium, the structure, at a hight of 102 metres and standing on three enormous bipods, dominates the Heysel plateau The interior disposition of the spheres was being undertaken by architects André and Jean Polak The Atomium was not intended to survive the Exhibition of 1958 Its popularity and success, however, ensured its place as a major landmark on the Brussels skyline photo: Nazar Leskiw 1958 Main designer, Interior architect André Waterkeyn André and Jean Polak Belgische Metaalnijverheden HJI Daily open from 1000h till 1800h During summertime different opening hours From Bruxelles central station take metrolijn 1A "Koning Boudewijn", stop station "Heizel" 6

8 photo: Miguel Loos Sound Barrier Sittard Geleen Kammilestraat Sittard Netherlands This is a sound wall plus "belvedere"-pavilion along the train tracks We designed this sound protection wall as a smaller variant of the our design for Brussels We here also opted for a cheap, industrial prefabricated sound wall, with three landmark objects inserted into it These objects visually reconnect the housing neighbourhood with the agricultural fields behind the sound wall The elements are derived from one prototype, a love seat for two persons that would be rotated within the wall according to its specific surroundings This love seat is build up out of the same materials as the sound wall except for its inside, which ideally would be finished in wood A big glass screen opens up the view but retains the noise emitted by the passing trains The shape of the little belvederes are a distorted reference to the thousands of train compartments rushing along every day photo: Miguel Loos 2006 Loos s Municipality Sittard Geleen FML 8

9 European Commission headquarters Rue de la Loi Brussels Berlaymont building, situated in Brussels' European district at Rue de la Loi 200 / Wetstraat, is home to European Commission headquarters It was designed by architect Lucien De Vestel with the help of Jean Gilson, Jean and André Polaks It consists of a cross-shaped tower in the shape of a star with four wings radiating out from a central hub The floors of the wings are supported by a steel structure hanged to pretension beams placed on the top of a narrow reinforced concrete structure In 1991 a renovation was needed The Commission returned to the building in 2004 The remodeling of the building was carried out by concept-architect Pierre Lallemand, and others (Lucien De Vestel, Steven Beckers and Wilfried Van Campenhout) Besides the addition of several meeting rooms, a double façade placed around the tower with movable glass panes was done at the outside and large openings were added in the ground floor to allow natural light distribution in the basement Public access unknown! 10 Luxembourg Station Rue de Treves Brussels Brussels-Luxembourg Station is a station in the east of Brussels under the site of the European Parliament in Brussels The station was first inaugurated in as the Leopold Quarter station but was redesigned with the construction of the European Parliament It now covers 16,000 square meters and is owned and operated by National Railway Company of Previously above ground on Luxembourg Square, it was redesigned as a subterranean station with the construction of the European Parliament's Espace Léopold complex around it The same architect consortium responsible for the Parliament, Atelier Espace Léopold, were responsible for the station's redesign The historic entrance to the old station now forms a public hall for the Parliament Floor area/size m² Atelier Espace Léopold pkrajewski_pl 10

20 Restaurant Praha Expo 58 Letenské sady Prague Czech Republic The restaurant Expo 58 was built together with an exhibition pavilion, in order to represent former Czechoslovakia at the World Expo in Brussels in 1958 After the huge success at the exhibition, the building was dismantled and transfered back to Prague The building was then used for its original purpose The restaurant was sold in 1991 to a private owner and further changes of owners, problematic managment and vandalism almost led to its destruction In 2001, the building was restored On the one hand, the restaurant was saved, but its purpose was changed as well Also, the interior of the newly reconstructed building has nothing to do with the original one Currently, the Expo restaurant is the domicile of an advertising agency (text from Public access unknown! 1960 Main designer, Frantisek Cubr Josef Hruby Zdenek Pokorný pkrajewski_pl 20
