6 photo: Andre Staalenhoef photo: Luc Boegly Jussieu 16M Atrium Place Jussieu Paris photo: Luc Boegly Jussieu Campus consists out of a regular grid of 6-floor wings and is generally decried as an architectural failure The hollow space under the buildings enables wind to build up its force, the regular grid plan is confusing and polluted with asbestos It has increasingly degraded, leaving its facade covered in graffiti The new 16M building extends and completes the grid plan that architect Edouard Albert designed in the 60s; based on the existing system, but at the same time deforms it: where Albert laid out a single patio, Périphériques planned two The façades are glazed on the same pattern as Albert s existing building But the glass metal skin composed of ten types of panels perforated with circular holes of different sizes give the façades complex and variable depth At ground floor, the existing slab on which the university buildings are built folds up in an origami-like orange ramp to even up the levels in a fluid movement Floor area/size m² Périphériques es EPA Jussieu peripheriques The campus is served by the Paris Métro station Jussieu, as well as numerous bus lines 6

8 photo: João Pereira de Sousa photo: João Pereira de Sousa Le Grand Louvre Place du Palais Royal Paris The central courtyard of the museum, on the axis of the Champs-Élysées, is occupied by the Louvre Pyramid, which serves as the main entrance to the museum This leads into a new central circulation space for the main wings of the galleries and as a visual centre point for the vast sprawling exterior The challenge for celebrity architect IM Pei was to create a design that would accomplish its task while at the same time allow the Louvre Museum to remain the focus of attention The solution he came up with was a series of glass pyramids The structures jut into the sky to draw the gaze of tourists and let them know this is where they should be But at the same time it allows both them and the Parisians the ability to see through it and revel in the elder architectural masterpiece The project also included the construction of a shopping mall, cultural center, an auditorium, and parking garages photo: João Pereira de Sousa 1989 Contractor IM Pei Dumez François Mitterrand Lotje The museum is open every day except Tuesday Admission to the Louvre is free on the first Sunday of every month Take the Metro (Lines 1 or 7) to the station Palais Royale Musée du Louvre, and follow signs to the museum; The following bus lines stop in front of the Pyramid: 21, 24, 27, 39, 48, 68, 69, 72, 81, 95, and the Paris Open Tour bus; An underground parking garage is available for those coming by car The entrance is located on avenue du Général Lemonnier It is open daily from 7 am to 11 pm; If you come by Batobus, get off at the Louvre stop, quai François Mitterrand 8

10 photo: Georges Fessy photo: Georges Fessy Ministere de la Culture Rue Saint-Honoré Paris The aim of this project was to regroup on a single site all the services of the Ministry of Culture, previously dispersed over 17 different locations around the city Francis Soler resolved the major constraints -disparity in dates and indifferent architectural style of the two existing buildings- into elements of unity and identity This unity is omnipresent in the internal space planning: the two buildings have been remodelled in their substance to require the obtained density, optimize work spaces and interconnect the different floor levels The other unifying element is purely architectural In the manner of Christo, Soler has wrapped the old buildings, walls and roof included, in a continuous organic-weave mesh of steel lace Without entirely effacing underlying differences, this stainless steel veil imparts continuity to the disparate volumes It hangs like a loose net detached from the elevations, its appearance changing in phase with the sun, shadows, day and night photo: Georges Fessy Public access unknown! 2004 Main designer, Interior architect Landscape designer General consultant Francis Soler Frédéric Druot Michel Desvignes Patrick Blanc Ministry of Culture Xavier_Gonzalez 10

14 photo: Périphériques architectes photo: Périphériques architectes Pink Ghost Place Furstemberg Paris In the framework of the second edition of the Contemporary Art Exposition Saint-Germain-des-Près, Périphériques es were invited to participate with an installation on Place Furstemberg The Pink Ghost was a 'sculptural transformation' of the centre of the square with a 'preservation' stance Made of pink epoxy, the installation enveloped four trees and a streetlight to a height of 25 metres and covered the entire surface of the small central square While the covering work was being done, the architects cleverly 'slipped' about 20 chairs and five coffee tables under the resine, to turn this exterior urban space into an 'interior' lounge/salon situated outside, in a way that raises questions about the status of public space in the city After its removal from the square, Pink Ghost was rebuilt in the French pavilion at the Biennale of ure in Venice, as a memory of the plaza and its new use photo: Périphériques architectes Floor area/size m², Artist, Interior architect, Landscape architect, Urban planner Périphériques es peripheriques Comité Saint-Germain-des-Près The work has been deconstructed 14

19 photo: Nazar Leskiw photo: LISA RICCIOTTI Islam Arts Department Musée du Louvre Paris The idea of covering the Cour Visconti with a glass roof would hark back to a nineteenth-century concept for a space that, until today, has looked at the sky We proposed the creation of a sail-like glass and metal canopy set back from the historic facades on all sides, floating over the galleries like golden, iridescent cloud that filters daylight A two layered metallic mesh (gold outside, silver inside) envelopes a system of waterproof glass panels and the "cloud" structure, a free-form double lattice system of round steel tubes, thicker where it is fitted to the load-bearing columns and thinner at the edges The interior mesh, lined with a honeycomb panel, serves as the ceiling for the galleries The 3D geometry of this skin required extensive computer modelling, to determine the positions and inclination angle for each of the triangles panels Main designer, Rudy Ricciotti Mario Bellini s Nazar photo: Nazar Leskiw 19

20 photo: photo: Villiot-Rapée Apartments Rue Villiot Paris The project embraces new concepts of living together primarily based on generous outdoor spaces, both private (balconies) and communal (floor area), as well as on an extrapolation of the advantages of detached houses, which have now disappeared forever from Paris - having one's own floor space and thus being rooted in the soil The starting point of the project, the ground, accompanies and moulds itself to the natural level, twists and transforms itself, hosts different disciplines, guides and accompanies residents, visitors and passers-by - and makes it into a home Each level and each flat has a different floor lending itself to different practices and uses Rather than being like a balcony, a loggia (or a terrace), which can be seen and used on a daily basis, winds its way around the outside of the flats and gives residents the feeling that they live outdoors This 'poured garden' creates close ties to the building's external environment photo: Sergio Grazia 2011 Hamonic + Masson Nazar 20

21 photo: Ricardo Bofill photo: Ricardo Bofill Cartier Headquarters Boissy d'anglas Paris A complex of buildings in the heart of the 'golden triangle' (the arrondissement of paris), close to the church of la Madeleine and Place de la Concorde The project was conceived as spatial and technical innovation whose source of inspiration is the city's covered streets and promenades The exteriors of the buildings are combined in such a way that observers' perception of space changes each time, creating an interior block street with three accesses and their corresponding addresses: 30, rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré; 33-37, rue Boissy d'anglas; and 3, rue de Surène The façades are of clear glass and serigraphed glass, while the paving is of pietra serena programme: offices, shops, showroom, restaurant and bar, a multi-purpose hall, a gymnasium and parking space for 450 vehicles in the basement photo: Ricardo Bofill Public access unknown!
